The proof has finally been provided that our conversion of chances has not been good enough and is the main reason why we are currently in 7th position.
ReplyDeleteWe have played some very nice football at times so far this season but have not been clinical enough - there is really no excuse as there have been no distractions in the season as European football has not been at Anfield this season.
There are simply no excuses why Andy Carroll has had to wait for Stevie G to come back into the side before getting quality balls in the area - the players are training together on a daily basis so should know by now how and when to play the ball to Andy Carroll to get the best out of him.
So for me the chances taken percentage is not acceptable.
I think your stats are telling us that there are more problems than just converting chances. If we have created 292 chances but have converted less than 10% it also tells us that there is a problem with the way the team is playing. Creating chances you have little chance of scoring from and continuing to do so is poor tactics. Regardless of Carrolls incompetence we should be fashioning chances that our other attacking options should be able to take.
ReplyDeleteAs the season has progressed we’ve become more defensive which has resulted in the second best defensive record in the league and also contributed to our poor goal return. Although Man City have shown that a good defence doesn’t have to mean a poor attack.
I think up to the point that Suarez went on his sabatical it was basically an inability to finish. Henderson, Adam, Carroll, Kuyt and all missed opportunities and I mean goal chances in the box. Penalties misses have cost us dearly to boot. Twenty-two games in and we have a midfield, that barring Gerrard, Maxi and Bellamy whose games have been restricted by injury and age have managed just three goals. As I've said in a blog, Liverpool bought Downing to for his crossing, but partly because his scored 8 goals, but he hasn't looked like scoring. In essence, we have Henderson and Lucas who don't have a history of goal scoring, so no matter how well you play is hard load to carry when when most of your midfield doesn't score and it's very rare for our defence contributes to the goals column either.
ReplyDeleteAs you say "a good defence doesn't mean a poor attack", but they have goal scorers/threats in every area. Adam Johnson, for instance, 5 goals this season and not even a starter. top teams have match winners and we are woefully short in that department and it's why a less than fully fit Gerrard is already playing and why Bellamy is probably being included more than Dalglish would like.
