Liverpool failed to contain the movement of Man United’s freewheeling midfield which at every turn allowed them to spread the ball wide, especially to Valencia, who almost put the away side ahead with a rasping drive which smacked against the post. Liverpool also enjoyed some early joy with Maxi’s own long range-drive palmed away.
Liverpool targeted De Gea’s perceived weakness in the air and while Carroll kept him busy Agger sauntered in to header relatively unchallenged sending the crowd into hoops of ecstasy against the run of play.
The holding player’s job is not only to make tackles and intercept, but to keep the side moving for that has never been Carragher’s forte and sadly for such a great servant of the club, he resembled a fish out of water. He invariably sat back reverting to type as a defender losing key possession rather than holding on to the ball and with Enrique having one of his poorest games of the season possession was thrown away. Liverpool seemed happy have Man United come on to them parodying the first leg of the Carling Cup game with Man City, but with over 60 per cent possession in the first-half, Man United eventually equalised when Enrique was half committed in the tackle allowing De Silva to get beyond him and cross and with Carragher failing to track Park there was only ever going to be one result.
Liverpool continued to look disjointed in the second period with no real support for the ‘big man’ up front and the midfield unable to get a grip on Scholes and Giggs. It came as no surprise to see Maxi and Carragher who had struggled respectively with the pace of the game substituted with Adam and Kuyt coming on. Steve Gerrard, seemingly feeling the affects of multiple games was not at his most effervescent and was unsurprisingly hooked with Craig Bellamy replacing him.
The change in personnel changed the course of the match with an increase in urgency giving Man United less time to move the ball at their wont and cut of the supply chain to Giggs and Valencia which had been their main mode of attack.
Andy Carroll worked tirelessly throughout, ploughing a lone furrow upfront with very little support and it was to his credit that it was his was his superb flick on which Kuyt ran on to volley the ball unmercilessly past De Gea to give Liverpool the upper hand and send the Anfield faithful, as it had been three days earlier, into delirium. His fine performance was almost deservedly capped when his header from Downing’s looped cross smashed against the bar from an acute angle with Kuyt missing the follow-up. Kuyt, the club’s ‘Duracell Bunny’ seems to have found his recharger in the last two games and begun to resemble his old super charged self.

Liverpool showed heart in abundance and while the manager’s hand may have been forced with three games on top of each other and a trip to Wolves on the horizon in three days time, we handed Man United the initiative to easily. But to the team’s credit they thought hard and restricted Man United to long rang efforts after their equaliser and kept them searching for their first win at Anfield since 2007.
As an aside, although not unexpected, it was disappointing to hear the Anfield crowd continued booing of Evra right through the match. It showed our fans in a bad light and also highlights a lack of understanding about the situation when understanding and appreciation has always been their watchword.
Kop Post Man of The Match: Daniel Agger: Put his body on the line time and again with last ditch tackles and ran the ball out of defence and into midfield in inimitable fashion.
I like it when we don't play too well but we still manage to get a result. I say give us the Manchester teams any day :-)
ReplyDeleteHope we can beat Wolves in our next game.
We didnt play particularly well but we got the result. I would love to have seen us dominate Man U, but it wasn't to be. At the start of last week, in all honesty, i didnt think we would beat the Mancs twice in the cups - great feeling.
DeleteWhat I felt uncomfortable and embarrassed about was the crowd booing Evra. Also I hope that the guy who made those monkey chants was reported by the crowd rather than relying on tv cameras. I really hope we're a club that kicks it out wherever we see it. When i looked at the pictures, I was pleased that the facial expressions of the true fans suggested that they were less than impressed!

I agree it is particularly gratifying for us to win when we are not playing well, but its important to transfer that mentality to the games where we are expected to win because it's can be the difference between drawing and winning. Also, if we replicate the atmosphere which is such apart of Anfield folklore into all our home games rather than just Carling Cup Semi-Finals and matches against Man United it may just help to pull us over the line in tight matches as it has so done on so many previous occasions.
DeleteIn terms of the man arrested after an picture suggested racist taunted, it's good that this was done on the back of complaints from members of the public and their is a strong indication this morning eminating from the club, that if founc guilty the appropriate measures will be taken by the club and he will be banned from life.
This is obviously not good for our public perception, both here and abroad as has been seen from articles on CNN http://edition.cnn.com/2012/01/29/world/europe/england-soccer-racism/index.html?hpt=ieu_c1 and in India http://www.newkerala.com/news/2011/worldnews-151121.html.
It really be good if Liverpool's Diversity Office or if we don't have one I'd assume the Community Officer would be a more public face to answer some of the more specific questions alongside one of the senior officials as the club is under increasing scrutinity. Being under the microscope is what a club of our magnitude will expect, but if from Crystal Palace's Youth Team player Dan Pringle's allegation from January 2011 http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/jan/10/liverpool-crystal-palace-racism-row to the lastest incident we have to deal appropriately with these incidents and make sure that Liverpool as club implements measures with make us a Diversity inclusive club both policy wise and on a daily basis from the people who sell our programmes and hot dogs to the players, manager and board.
Thanks for the blog. This is really good and a excellent description of the match. I thought the Reds played particularly well although I was getting anxious in the first 20 mins of the 2nd half, but a really good performance as they got stronger near the end and Dalglish made some excellent substitutions.
DeleteI watched the game in the pub with my son who is (unfortunately) a Man U fan. He was understandably, gutted.
I also thought the booing of Evra was totally out of order and they should have risen above that. At least they have arrested that idiot in the crowd.

Delighted with the win and the fact that we can win occasionally when we haven't played well.
ReplyDeleteMy two main gripes today are:-
1)Carragher was played in midfield when in my opinion his legs have gone and he never really had the type of game to be a midfield general or the technical skill to do a job as a defensive midfielder - for some reason Dalglish saw something in him which meant that he spent part of his 34th birthday on the pitch today.
2)Our captain is being expected to do everything in the team because we have passengers in the team who do not take any responsibility. The perfect example of that is Henderson who will make a two yard pass to Stevie G rather than try anything creative himself - his whole purpose in the side at the moment is to play it simple - he has joined one of the biggest clubs in World Football and at this moment in time is playing like he doesn't belong on this stage.
Stevie G is expected to hold back and play the quarter-back role because Charlie Adam can't defend or tackle - Stevie G is also expected to play in every position in midfield as he can't rely on the respective player playing in that position and then also expected to play the marauding attacking midfielder who has to link to our main striker and set up or provide goals.
At this moment in time it is totally not fair on him as others are not helping us get the best out of our world class midfielder and it is only a matter of time before he will get injured again through trying to play too many positions in one game.
In the game today the midfielders of Man Utd did the running for the likes of their best midfielders Giggs and Scholes who are both over 35. Whereas Stevie had to be substituted through exhaustion from trying to do everything on the pitch without any support from our midfielders.
Henderson, Adam and co need to step up and help get the best out of Gerrard towards the last 3-4 years hopefully of his career by taking more initiative and not expecting our Captain Marvel to do it all or it will cost us our captain long-term. I hope they heed the warning.
I agree we didn’t play particularly well but we got the result in a fighting spirit way,
DeleteAt one point they had 70% possession and the figures just showed we were chasing he ball.
I texted Vic at half time saying if we don’t tighten up at the back we will break, and we decently need to make a few tactical manoeuvres, example to bring in some throttle going forward. Answer Bellamy, Kyte.
But at times it’s about getting the result rather then playing well, and we kept fighting, character and determination and the belief which is what got us through.
Done both Man City and ManU, well Happy
Let’s win the Dam thing now!

As Merv rightly predicted last week we have now progressed to the next round after playing both Manchester clubs in two cup games - what the aim is now is to transfer that form into a long run of wins in the league - we need to start showing the capability to beat the lower teams which will push us into a position to try and nick that 4th place.
DeleteWell done to the lads for passing the test of character and showing that we have finally remembered how to win when we haven't performed well - also credit to Andy Carroll for the vital flick for the winning goal.
Sorry David, did he flick the ball or it was a straight kick from Reina. The vital flick was missed by Kirt, the "Duracel".
DeleteWithout Carroll's flick on - the ball wouldn't have fell for Dirk to finish the game.
DeleteJust before the flick, Carroll's looked aside and saw Dirk run into open space.... awareness and timing was the key, he up beat his appointment to flick the ball on.... well done to Andy Carroll and Dirk to blast the ball back of the net. Terrific Win.

Thanks David, but that wouldn't still stop us from swapping him for T of Man City should that become an option.
DeleteDelighted with the win on Saturday, we didn’t play brilliant but we got a result and Kenny made good substitutions to put them under pressure in the last 20 mins. Again Bellamy deserves a special mention for his industry and dragging defenders all over the place creating space for his team mates. Andy had a decent game and showed some decent link up play with the midfield. It would have been perfect for him to have scored a third with that late header but it wasn’t to be.
DeleteI’m not sure what to make of the claims in yesterday’s Observer that we tried to engineer a swap deal for Tevez. LFC have come out and rubbished the story and to be honest I don’t think that we could pay his 200k pw wages in the long term but if we can get him in on a loan just to the end of the season I think he could make a real difference for us in our hunt for silverware and Champions League qualification.
Its not gonna happen - he is gonna have to rot in the reserves for City because they can't get rid of him.
DeleteHis whole attitude as a footballer stinks and would disrupt the camp too much to be accepted in the group for me.
He has also said he doesn't want to go to LFC so not interested in him.
Tomorrow I am hoping we can pick up a player/striker or winger on loan but doubt we will do any business now until the summer.
the guys an idiot!
DeleteYeah he is an idiot but he scores goals for fun. The only reason we aren’t in the top 4 at the moment is that we don’t have a player that can put the ball in the net. If Tevez can fire us into the Champs league nobody will care about his personality. Worth a punt til the end of the season I reckon.
Deletebe amazed if it happens but I'd definitely take a gamble on him because as Barry says he gaurantees you goals and think we'd definitely nick the fourth spot if we could organise a loan deal where city subsidise his wages (like they're doing with adebayor) in the hope that a loan spell will reinflate his value.....
DeleteCan't see anything happening but as david says would definitely be nice to pull a good loan out of the hat....
Fantastic result on saturday and a bout time we played below-par and won...also long overdue was a late winner against the mancs - goes someway to healing the wounds of ole gunnar solskaers 89 and 92nd minute goals against us in 99!
Yes his ability so score is out the world, but don't understand how players get paid millions, but sulk, and give attitude, so that's why his a idiot lol.
Deletejust bumped into a Mau U fan, shouting "off-side, doggy goal" ? ya ya
Off Side?????
DeleteEven for a Manc that's embarrassing!!
