Bellamy Leads Liverpool To Wembley

It’s taken us five years, but we are back we are back in a final and at the new Wembley for the first time.  This was a victory that was deserved, with chances created a plenty and Craig Bellamy showing just what a world class talent is.  He ran his heart and gave the Man City central defenders a torrid time, giving a lesson to all and sundry just how to lead the line.

The atmosphere was back to what one would  expect of the Anfield faithful.  They were proactive and reactive and helped raise the fervour to a level which pushed the team to match our expectation levels.

This is not the time to complain about missed chances, because Joe Hart was truly magnificent, he pulled off six wonderful saves that on another day the game would have been over before half-time.  The manager’s criticism post Bolton in the media and in the programme notes, seemed to have the desired effect and fire up the players, so much so that Liverpool were on top from the very first minute.  Stevie Gerrard playing in a deeper lying role endeavouring to counter the threat of the sublimely talented David Silva showed his versatility by playing a holding role and controlling the tempo of Liverpool’s play.

Liverpool will be disappointed with the time and space given to De Jong allowing him to put City ahead from 25 yards.  But, we were never fighting a fully fledged rear guard action as such and while Man City had plenty of possession, we fully deserved to equalise having piled on the pressure.  Gerrard’s penalty as it had been in the first leg was decisive and to the same side to boot.

Man City showed their class, working an opportunity to fashion a chance for Dzeko to tap home from inside the box.  Dirk Kuyt, having his most influential game of the season, supported Bellamy manfully, and the two combined and in turned Bellamy with the galloping Glen Johnson who returned the favour Bellamy.  His first touch was out of the Dalglish book of creativity and allowed Bellamy to make space to slide the ball exquisitely into the far post.

Dalglish's management of Craig Bellamy should be applauded. With the mileage stored in his legs over the season, he was able to dip in the well twice within the space of the week for Bellamy to give a top performance against Bolton and a stunning performance tonight to take us through to Wembley for the first time in sixteen years.

  1. This was truly a great night to be at Anfield. The place was rocking - for me this was my greatest experience at Anfield - last time I went for the Stoke game I was still suffering from post Suarez stress.

We didnt get everything right, a couple of our players had nightmares but Skyrtel and Agger looked solid.

Fully understand Kenny shedding a few tears and what a swansong for Craigy Bellamy - absolutely outstanding!

    1. So jealous of you two being there last night! Sounded like one of the great old european nights and performance mirrored them too with Liverpool first to evry loose ball and hunting down city players in packs. There was a point in second half when agger disposed dzeko with ease and I thought to myself there is no way we're losing this...admittedly when they scored for a second time against the run of play my certainty wavered a little....

Bellamy and Agger were unbelievable for me while everything gerrard did had authority and class marked all over it. Adam showed had a few great moments and showed glimpses of a return to form before lucas got injured, although his status as a total liability increased with that ridiculous swipe at the corner....

31,000 tickets for both clubs should make for an incredible an atmosphere....

    3. I bet it was awesome. I could just imagine it from seeing it on the TV. I bet it was a late night though? Good blog. Bellamy and Kuyt played really well together, the 2nd goal was excellent, and there were a few times we nearly pulled off a similar great one touch move. Roll on Wembley. The last time we were there was the year I applied for a season ticket.....

    4. I count myself extremely lucky to have been there. You hear the old-timers talking about St Etienne '77 and you just want to experience one of those nights for yourself!.

    5. I've been lucky enough to of been at some classics myself during the houllier era - prob best being the uefa cup semi-final against barca ten years ago when gary mac scored and we defended for entire second half. I was in main stand by the barca fans and after you'll never walk alone at the end they started doing the not worthy bowing thing - absolutely amazing!

I imagine you's two should be able to get yourself a ticket for the final given the games you've clocked this season and fact you were at semi? My contact for tickets can't make the final cause he's on a stag do that weekend so I'm praying I can take his tickets! Went to england friendly at wembley a couple of years ago and couldn't help spending the whole time thinking how class it would be to watch liverpool in a final there....

    6. Blessed is the way I'd describe it. Makes that morning where I was totally stressed out trying to get tickets, really worthwhile.

    3. 1 man down and 1 man to go. I have always like bells as a player no matter how many times he gets in trouble, he was the right playerto score the winner.

Glad he was given the chance to come back to Liverpool.

  3. What would we do without him - we bought him on free but he has forced himself through consistent performances to now be a vital cog of our team.

Bellamy has definitely been the best summer signing we have made so far under King Kenny - value for money in every game he has performed whenever he has been asked to do so.

Long may it continue - my concern is that no other players apart from our talisman Gerrard and the effervescent Bellamy look like being able to score in any game.

    1. Ben, I think these are the nights that as supporters we all cherish. It's great to watch it on television, but to be there live and be apart of the atmosphere is unreal and sensational. The ovation which Craig Bellamy received we live long in the memory and I just hope we can go on and win the trophy.
