Missed chances cost Liverpool as United turntables in North West Clasico

It was day which saw any flickering hopes of Champions League qualification through the Premiership unceremoniously exposed and extinguished through top class finishing, Liverpool’s profligacy in front of goal and our embarrassingly hopeless defence.

The three-nil score-line may seem lopsided given the measure of Liverpool’s dominance, but chances were squandered with Sterling and Balotelli the main culprits.  The performance was immeasurably better attacking wise, but in basic terms it was no different to last season, but without the devastating finishing.   This was the type of game with a finisher of some description we may have won 6-3.
The decision to remove Adam Lallana at the break seemed incomprehensible with the England International one of the few creative outlets.  Glen Johnson also left the field before half-time with a groin injury to be replaced by Kolo Toure.   Liverpool’s high pressing game all but disappeared as soon as Wayne Rooney gave Man United the lead against the run of the play.
The goal said everything that is wrong about Liverpool.  Areas of quality negated by total ineptness around the pitch.  Lallana played a superb reverse ball to Sterling who on the turn shot meekly at De Gea with the goal at his mercy and within 25 seconds the ball was nestling in the back of the Liverpool net.
Valencia literally sauntered by after nutmegging Allen in the left back position with Moreno close by failing to cover.  The winger playing at wing-back pulled the ball back to the unchallenged Rooney, left by Coutinho to pass the ball into the net with Brad Jones, having come in for Mignolet, inexplicably diving the wrong way.
Millions spent and the defence is if anything less secure which is going some.  Lucas in front of the defence provided some assemblance of security which is why his absence from the starting line-up appeared a risky ploy with Brendan Rodgers aching to get back to the technical essence and brilliance of last season.
A clinical striker would have propelled Liverpool to victory, which only makes it difficult to work out why with Liverpool’s well documented problems in front of goal, Borini has fallen out of favour and why a youngster has yet to be promoted to the first team bench especially with Brendan looking to increase the tempo and fluidity into upfront.
The second goal was blatantly off-side, but Mata’s run was criminally untracked by Moreno.  The young Spaniard has been lax in his defensive duties and is more concerned with going forward rather being a left-back first and foremost.
De Gea was excellent and his man of the match award shows just how dominant Liverpool were, but it also highlighted the disappointing nature of our finishing.   The shots (9 on target) were all close or straight at De Gea lacking procession and Sterling’s lamentable tame finish one on one with the goalkeeper hints at a lack of confidence even having rounded the keeper.
Dejan Lovren’s season of mediocrity hit new heights.  The defender miscued his clearance into the path of Mata, who calmly found Van Persie to close out the game.
The difference between the sides was finishing.  One side can and one cannot.
Liverpool player ratings:

Jones 5 His diving the wrong way for the first goal seemed almost farcical
Johnson 5 Played in a back three, didn’t seem comfortable. Ricked a groin before half-time
Sktrel 4 Struggled to deal with the movement of Van Persie and Wilson
Lovren 3 It’s time he was taken out of the firing line.  The comical nature of his attempted clearance shows just how far he has fallen
Henderson 5 The wider role he is being asked to play has impacted on his effectiveness
Gerrard 5 A couple of excellent passes, otherwise the game bypassed him
Allen 3 Was lucky not to have been hooked at half-time having been asked to play a role which saw him up against Valencia
Moreno 3 Very little added value going forward or back
Coutinho 4 Started well and then disappeared after the first goal and his failure to track Rooney’s run is something he has to improve on
Sterling 7 Best player by a country mile and will be disappointed not to have at least bagged a brace
Lallana 6 Disappointingly substituted at the break after looking one of the most effective creative options
Toure 4 Was part of a very poor defensive unit in the second-half
Markovic 5 Unlucky not to start, but the game was lost by the time he entered the fray
Balotelli 5 Like Sterling could and should have had at least two goals

  1. Seems like the technical creativity required never materialised. Shocking result.

    1. Yes: The formula is simple – no keeper+no defence+no striker = a no win game.

    2. Result Not really a shock to me, display or the result. Man U believed in winning the game and hunger to win. just shows how far you can start to clime up the table by winning a few games on the trot, and than carry this on, we where never where going to win!

    8. I think Bala summed it up well. We were short in terms of the basic principles of football . We can neither score or defend!

    9. On my way to work met up with Karl to pick up a hot drink and share our depressing analysis of the poor result and saw a beggar outside asking for something to eat – I gave her a pound and Karl offered to buy her breakfast which shocked her – the cafĂ© refused to serve her as she had been begging all morning and so she asked for more money.

Sounded like the situation with Liverpool and Sterling contract talks where you don’t get what you want but still ask for more money !!!

    10. I think it should by now realise that it is ability to score that push the wage demand up not running like headless chicken and cannot take the chance. I am sorry the 3:0 may flattered MU, but if we have a mere decent striker in that game Man U would have been blown away without a doubt. We make David look invincible by kicking the ball at him!!!!!!!!!!

    11. In a bid to claw back some of the 20 million quid that Liverpool threw away on the worst defender in the league the club is bringing out a Football blooper DVD in time for Christmas –

“Desperately Dejan” is available from all good retailers for 19:99 and includes classics such as –

      • Taking out your own team mate
      • Where’s that Aguero fella gone?
      • Turning like an articulated Lorry
      • Sliced Clearances a-go-go
      • Heading while falling
      • How not to organise
      • One day I’ll be captain!

Give yourself a laugh this Christmas and pop “Desperately Dejan” under the tree.

    15. This exactly type of match we'd probably have won 5-3 or 6-3 last season. The first goal was woeful and the second well off-side, but these things happen, but he was allowed to just steal in.

Going forward we were at times very good between the boxes, but there is very little else in terms of defensive capabilities. Playing Jordan Henderson as a wing-back is killing his game stone dead at the moment. In terms of the defence there is very little else to say, accept they seemed to find a way of hitting new lows and as for Coutinho it's not the first time he hasn't tracked back. Allen for Lucas... damn! As Bala intimated there are problems in the box at both ends, but there are problems elsewhere. At times Carrrick was absolutely cantering through the game running back and back heeling the ball just kills.

Sterling should have scored, but that's the risk you take when you start without a striker and I still don't know what has happened to Borini... did he turn up to Brendan's house uninvited to ask his daughter out!?! I was saying to Karl yesterday, not one of those 9 strikes on goal was actually in the corner. Everyone recognises the problems we have with the goalkeepers, but it was a huge call to do so in that game, why not two games back?

As I said previously, like him to succeed, but sometimes it's the way you lose especially against a very beatable side - remember they had no problems dismissing the last two Liverpool managers and one was a club favourite. This could be a defining week. Bournemouth are taking the Championship by storm, scoring for fun and then there is Arsenal...

      Delete
    16. Borini, crying out loud, please get him on and let see what he can or can’t do. The guy is picking up his wages week after week, why can you get him one for once to earn it before off loading him.

      Delete
    17. And Lovren he's having a laugh at Liverpool's expense.

      Delete
    18. Its beginning to feel a bit like the end of Houlier’s reign, a complete lack of fight throughout the team. The lack of defending by Lallana and Allen for the first goal should have led to them both being charged with criminal negligence.

As someone pointed out before the game, Rodgers team sheet looked more like a suicide note than a purpose of intent.

      Delete
    19. Is BR very arrogant about Borini or is he injured?

      Delete
    20. Livingstone, it's very difficult to know what to say without sounding negative.

But, when the manager starts saying the team " has issues" and having to recapture the team ethos you know we are trouble. He also goes on to say we have a fractured dressing room. I suggest he starts earning his corn and restructuring/re vamping.

      Delete
    21. By fractured I guess he means that Migs, Johnson, Lovren, Skrtel, Moreno, Allen, Lucas, Coutinho, Mario, Lambert and Lucas can’t stand him and have all stopped playing for him.

      Delete
    22. That should have been kept internally rather than open to the public.

      Delete
    23. All three goals could and should have been avoided. I despair!

      Delete
    24. Can I also add Coutinho and Gerrard to the players to blame for the first goal as Coutinho did not track Rooney’s run and Gerrard as the defensive midfield cover did not anticipate the pull back for Rooney to score.

I was also not impressed by Gerrard having a go at the players when he was just as much at fault.

      Delete
    25. For the first time I watched J. Carragher analysis of our defence failing, and how best to fix it, I was more than impress. The guy got football sense.

      Delete
    26. Didn’t watch it – can you summarise what he said???

      Delete
    27. It was on MNF. The summary of what he said was the wrong positioning of Lovren and other defenders. For the example he showed the Kolo’s positioning and the Lovren. Kolo covered the space so when MU players noticed that they switch over to Lovren and found the space he left and exploited it big time. I was impress and I felt the guy can rescue us right now if he is made at least a temporary man in charge until a future manager is found.

      Delete
    28. As Livingstone said we can’t keep changing the manager everytime we have a bad season – we need to stick it out with him through thick and thin – when the good times come back they will be even sweeter !!!

      Delete
    29. For me he should get JC to back him up for the remaining period of this season!!!

      Delete
    30. Not going to happen -as him and Colin “Yes man” Pascoe go a long way back and he has always been his right hand man and despite there not being any European or trophy winning experience between the pair of them – Our manager is stubborn enough to believe he doesn’t need any help.

      Delete
    31. Well, why doesn’t he come in as training the back 4 how to defend, surely don’t they see after the match videos and learn, where and how they went wrong, spot the mistakes, make sure this does not happen again, example how to stop exploiting space at the back, then put this drillout on the training ground!!

      Delete
    32. That’s the biggest problem I have with our manager’s excuse “not enough time on the training pitch to coach the side”

If he identifies like the whole world that the defence needs constant training drills to get it right – I would ensure that they are working overtime as a defensive unit – working all the time to correct this.

  2. Was reading how after missing his recent penalty Origi was booed and jeered by his own fans. In his next match Lille won 3-0 and he was stilled being booed even though he got an assist and won an penalty (which he didn't take).

Of the 9 other loanees over the weekend:

Jordan Ibe came on at half-time not much to write home about in that game (although has done well this season)
Andrew Wisdom played the whole game and by all accounts impressed
Teixiera played well in a struggling side (Sami is very close to getting the bullet)
Ilori was dropped to the reserves
    Sebastian Coates unused sub
    Assaidi unused sub
Aspas didn't make the match day squad
    Rafa Paez unused sub

Seems our loanees are not covering themselves with glory.

    2. I think someone nicked the book because his whole philosophy seems to change from one game to the next !!!

    3. More importantly, hearing there will be little or no money for Brendan in the January transfer market. Will have to generate his own cash in January.

    4. Rumours circulating this morning that we are lining up Norwich’s keeper John Ruddy as Mignolet’s replacement! Sounds like the money man is dead.

      Delete
    5. When last season Mig made a double saves to give us the win over Stoke, we thought the goal keeper legend has arrived. Now is a falling guy walking absolutely and completely alone. Wow how thing change. It all go to say that it is only one thing that is constant in this life and that is change.

      Delete
    6. Baz, If true means we sell Mignolet... just wondering who too?

      Delete
    7. So Brendan Rodgers has taking the total blame for the transfer committee and his decision to buy those players in the summer.

I think the transfer committee should also be culpable for this disastrous season and that set up should be reviewed at the end of the season as well.

      Delete
    8. Even when he was at Sunderland he had a rep for being poor with his feet, It was a strange signing from a manager who wanted us to play out from the back and keep possession. Anyway, it’s been a total disaster so he has to go, I was just hoping for someone with more quality than John Ruddy, Norwich aren’t exactly flying high at the moment.

      Delete
    9. I guess we can use Deadly Doug' analogy from yesterday - I doubt BR will even be allowed to buy a sandwich during the window regardless of what we need.

      Delete
    10. Unless your number 1 keeper is truly exceptional, and some might say it's irrelevant, a number 2 keeper must push your main keeper to show why he should be 1st choice. I think It might be worth taking on Ruddy as a replacement for Jones. Maybe Migs just needs a spell on Strictly or with John Barnes to get his feet moving. And as for Jones, he could probably do with a spell with Tom Daley!

      Delete
    11. And what about the previous summer...

Remember he sold Jonjo Shelvey (because he thought Joe Allen was his Xavi) and brought in Luis Alberto for £6.8 million (made only 8 apperances for Malaga this term). Iago Aspas £7.2 million (6 appearances in the League this and zero goals), just shows they about as useful as an injection seat on a helicopter.

      RODGERS SIGNINGS BY NUMBERS
£214.4m - the amount Rodgers has spent in the transfer market.
72 - the percentage of signings that have been strikers or midfielders
£148.4m- the amount Rodgers has spent on strikers and midfielders
£66m- the amount Rodgers has spent on defenders and goalkeepers

I know statistics can be minipulated to show anything you want, but the players brought are failing.

He has to find his best XI and stick with it (or at least a core of around 8 players). Give more playing time to the players who look as though they have something to offer, namely Can, Markovic and Lallana (when he's fit).

What ever he does in January he has to get someone in the middle of the park. I don't know where our transfer commitee were when the likes of Alex Song became available, but if I was JW I'd be asking questions about the lack of success over the last two windows. Also, £148.4m spent on strikers and midfielders and only one player than who you can say is an authentic centre-midfielder. Poor very poor.

To spend that kind of money and start a game of that magnitude (Mancs) with no recognised striker is embarrassing. We have a much vaunted youth system is there not one young striker we can place on the bench for a few games at least?

      Delete
    12. Aspas – has 6 goals in the cup this season (2 hat-tricks) – don’t leave out that stat please !!! :-)

  5. So how much time do we give Liverpool managers now?

A seventh place finish followed by a 2nd doesn’t seem to warrant given BR anytime to sort out this mess.

In some ways we are in the same place when Rafa had a second place finish and rather than give him time to sort it out we ripped up the book and started again and we all know how that ended up.

    1. He bodged up a great opportunity this summer so he has (for me!!!) a season to fix this up.

If we are in the same spot in 12 months time – he will have to resign as he will have been given the benefit of the doubt this season.

      Delete
    2. David, I think so too, a season to fix this mess up, but say if likes of Jurgen Klopp comes in the running and wants the job, with more defaets from BR, then what?

      Delete
  6. I thought I'd give this article another airing given Lovren's pathetic performances this season and of course on Sunday. Should BR go to the Mountain that is Mohammed Sakho? I doubt he'd win Strictly but I do think he's a better defender than Lovren. He's also fit again and apologised for his hissy fit when he stormed off.

Interesting stuff about his so called clumsiness in possession.

    2. There’s a high risk factor as well in that partnership but I know what you mean we need a more physical presence throughout the team.
