We were
hoping for one of those nights, but from the off Rodgers gave the impression of
wanting to nick a victory by sending out an experience eleven with Allen and
Lucas on guard patrol in front of a defence containing the returning Lovren, back
for the injured Kolo Toure and surprisingly Jose Enrique ahead of Moreno.
Rodgers seems
to have lost, for the moment at least, that boldness which made his coaching so
exciting. Knowing his side needed to win
he erred on the side of caution leaving Coutinho and Lallana on the bench and
may have decided our fate before kick-off leaving so much invention and skill
languishing on the bench.
The lack of
pace clearly evident in his chosen formation, meant Liverpool would need to be
precise in their play. Basle, though
started well, technical and quick, spurred on by two thousand Swiss fans
audible above the nervous home masses.
They were crisp, concise and potent often yards ahead in thought and
play with the Liverpool midfield and defence struggling to get a handle on the
invention in front, beside and often beyond them.
When Basle
struck they struck in glorious fashion.
Pinching the ball with great movement and interplay between Frei and Zuffi
at the edge of the area before Frei’s stunning shot left Mignolet flailing. Paulo Sauso, a truly gifted player himself,
must have been purring. Brendan Rodgers,
must have looked at Marco Strellar with envy.
So in need of a striker, Strellar led the line adroitly, aided by Gashi
who had he timed his run more succinctly would have sent Basle in two-nil
having been adjudged off-side.
Liverpool
was struggling to get Gerrard into the game and Rickie Lambert fought hard, but
with the lack of service even his pugnacious running upfront without the pace
and movement which Liverpool’s game so heavily relies on, he like the besieged
Enrique would not to see beyond half-time.
It is a mystery
how Moreno is not a permanent fixture and seeing Jose Enrique struggled one
wonders how Brendan Rodgers can keep getting it so wrong. Moreno entered the fray replacing Enrique
with Markovic coming on for workhorse Lambert.
Markovic
introduction saw Sterling move into a central role. The Serbian appeared desperate to make up
for lost time driving at the heart of the Basle defence committing tacklers, so
much so that he looked as if give Liverpool the edge we craved. Unfortunately, 15 minutes into the
second-half it was all to end as he impetuously flicked his arm back as much as
to brush off the attentions of Safari.
Whether he grazed Safari or not, the red card was brandished, although
one wondered if there was a sniper posted somewhere in the ground given the
dramatic nature of Safari’s slump to the ground.
Bolstered by
the injustice, Gerrard pushed further forward with the body language of “lead,
follow or get the hell out of the way”.
The Liverpool captain, like the Gerrard of old, stormed into the penalty
area after being put through by Sterling, getting there a fraction after the
goalkeeper Vaclik, leading to desperate penalty cries from the faithful.
These are
now desperate times for Liverpool. Ten
years on from the magical night at Anfield which saw Gerrard writing his name
into Liverpool folklore against Olympiakos, to say Liverpool still depend on
thirty-four year old would be an understatement. The team sheet yesterday showed Liverpool
without a back-up striker on the bench and the finger points directly at a
manager who seemingly has lost confidence in parts of his squad.
Sterling who
looks to be coming back to form was tripped on the edge of the area. Cometh of the hour, up steps Stevie
Gerrard. Captain fantastic placed a curling
free-kick into the top corner of the net with all the precision of the diamond
cutter.
Two minutes
later Henderson saw his header deflect of a defender wrong footing Vaclik only
to see the goalkeeper change direction and save on the line.
The ten men
of Liverpool desperately strode forward in remaining four minutes of injury and
the last chance fell to Skrtel, now playing upfront. The defender displayed excellent movement to
beat his defender to a near post cross, but saw his flick fall the wrong side
of the post. It was Liverpool’s last
hoorah and with it, possible Steven Gerrard’s in the Champions League.
Man of the Match: Steven Gerrard – with Sterling, the
only starting Liverpool player capable of inflicting damage on a more than
capable Basel side, but unfortunately surrounded by average colleagues. In the dying embers of Liverpool’s Champions
League journey, he picked himself up for one last drive.
It’s a
damning indictment that with almost £120 million spent in the close season,
Liverpool cannot produce good enough support for their captain.
Critical eye:
Brendan Rodgers disappeared down the tunnel as soon as the whistle
blew. He had thrown away any initiative
by leaving Lallana and Coutinho on the bench, sending out a team which lacked
pace and creativity. He has gone from
being a manager full of boldness and invention to one who looks as if he is set
in panic mode.
He waited
until half-time to make changes when it was patently obvious we in trouble after
10 minutes. Enrique looked woefully off
the pace and you wondered how Rodgers could miscalculate his readiness to such
a degree. Moreno looked a threat from
the minute he stepped on the pitch and Rodgers has got to settle on a core of
players of eight or nine players to get us out of the mess we are now in.
Top teams do
rotate, but generally they have a core of players who start top matches and
right now players like Lallana, Markovic and Can cannot build any continuity
with his stop start philosophy.
Sadly and I think
we all knew this, Liverpool are currently just not good enough.
Steven Gerrard’s comments: ‘We haven't gone
out of the competition because of our performance tonight, we've gone out
because away at Basle we weren't good enough, in our last game we conceded a
stupid goal towards injury time.
‘You always qualify over the six games and unfortunately
we haven't been good enough. We need to get our main striker Daniel Sturridge back
and get some more goals in the side. We need to get Mario Balotelli back and
firing.
‘That is not to take away anything from the lads who have
played tonight and have slogged their guts out. Rickie Lambert has ran himself
into the ground tonight, but it has just been a game too far tonight and that
has been because of a lack of numbers.’
Player ratings:
Mignolet 5 – He is as poor a goalkeeper as we’ve seen at
Anfield. With time running out and
Skrtel upfront he didn’t possess the brain-power to launch the ball upfront
Glen Johnson 6 – Flattered to deceive coming forward. Competent defensively, especially with one
coverage interception and a block tackle in front of goal
Lovren 4 –
Offered very little in terms of leadership and his confidence is obviously at a
low ebb
Skrtel 5 – The
biggest indictment on his play is he looked more at home playing upfront
Enrique 3 –
Abysmal. A liability and one doubts whether he has a future
Sterling 6 –
The free-kick came from his driving run and had Markovic stayed on the pitch we
may just have seen more from him playing centrally
Allen 4 –
Seemed overawed, offered very little in both directions and is another whose
future must be in doubt
Lucas 5 –
Got around the pitch and did what Lucas does making tackles and putting out
fires
Henderson 5 –
Huffed and puffed without exhibiting any real quality
Gerrard 7 –
The first half past him by, but came to life after the sending-off and almost
brought Anfield to a crescendo
Rickie
Lambert 5 – Looked a journeyman with no service and a lack of pace
Subs:
Markovic 6 –
Lively, just a shame that a moment of daftness was so harshly penalised
Moreno 6 –
Got forward offering himself as an outlet and delivered the ball in dangerous
areas. Deserves a chance to make the position his own
Coutinho NA –
Couldn’t get into the game in the time available
Our manager again lets us down by selecting the completely wrong starting line up bringing in Enrique instead of Moreno which means wasting a sub by having to eventually bring on Moreno instead of having an opportunity to bring on Lallana.
ReplyDeleteHaving Skrtel up front late on sums up the fact that our manager refused to have either Borini (through stubbornness) or young striker Jerome Sinclair (lack of forward thinking) available on the bench.
Fed up with the fact that our team didn't grasp the opportunity to make a statement in the first half by putting more pressure on Basel and only performed with less than 10 mins left in the game.
That for me sums up our season we have been poor in nearly every single game in the first half and have not been much better in the majority of second halves either.
Absolutely gutted but need to accept we are just not good enough our manager has again created a false dawn by having a world class striker to take us with him up to the upper echelons of football and now he is no longer with us we are just an average mid table side with no goal scoring threat.
If we lose to the Scum on Sunday we can kiss goodbye to CL next season. This has now become a terrible season.
No more CL for potentially two more years, the owners are not going to accept these extremely poor performances and results for much longer and it will serve our manager right if the inevitable happens- not having a striking option alone on the bench for me every game is not positive football - he has a lot of answers to provide.
David,
DeleteI agree, I don’t think he is that good and he has to take responsibility. What would managers like JM or SAF would have done in this type of game. Attack, attack and with subs on the bench that would like to change the game should the worst happen but not Bodgers. He went defensively.
I can’t wait for him to go and I’m really fed up as I can’t see us achieving anything this season.
Mo
That group was a gift and we could only manage one win out of six. Total and utter failure. What a disappointment after waiting 5 years to get back in and it looks like we’re in for another long wait for our next shot. Gutted.
DeleteWe crashed out long before last night. Away game against Basel were for a taken, we could not. I will not blame the red card that was not as Shakespeare put it, if you failed first and find excuses, after the 3rd third time blame your self. BR admit that we are not good enough after squaring £117m, who should we blame???????????
DeleteBest form of defence is ………………….
DeleteI said to Edet before I left yesterday we’ll draw the game because the issue is not so much the personnel but the way we are playing, and the first half performance summed it up.
DeleteOnly after going down to 10 men and going out of the tournament did we finally take the game to Basel as if we needed the expectation of qualifying for the knock-out phase to be lifted before we could play without pressure.
The only issue I had with the team selection was not having a second striker on the bench in a game you had to win as that just smacks of negligence!
Grim times, and sign of times that only positive I can take from it is a 15 minute cameo by our twenty million signing (who has done nothing in three months) before his straight red...looked like a different player and worth a start on Sunday for me
DeleteLuke,
DeleteI agree but BR will drop him as he can’t make his mind about our best players and will prefer players that he likes .
Mo
In this team, if you play well it seems to guarantee you a place on the bench. I agree that BR's team selection seemed naive by not having a striker on the bench but also his team selection and strategy in my view was equally naive. Where did Enrique suddenly spring from?
DeleteI said in earlier messages that it was equally important for BR to have a good game - he didn't. Like some of our players, BR has the potential to be good at his job but he's still learning his trade! To some extent talented but at the moment seems limited.
I can’t wait but the question who will take over? King KD in the meantime.
DeletePlease do not mention that name. King KD to me is like a recycle paper and the colour is far from being white!!
DeleteI'm glad Stevie made those comments after the match because there could be no bullshit in terms of "we started slow... but were unlucky in the end..." type nonsense.
DeleteWhen they scored it couldn't have been a surprise to any of us and Brendan didn't have to wait until half-time to make his substitutions. Yes, we raised our game when Markovic was sent off, but you felt they were sitting back and were excellent on the counter attack. What we'd give for a Strellar..
Baz was saying the otherday he'd give BR until the end of the year as would I. But, when we constantly get these sub-standard performances, he can't just keep saying the players need time because hardly any of them are getting a game. The way he rushed off yesterday after the final whistle said a thousand words!
DeleteToo many lack lustre performances = the sack
Tell me about it. Faffing about for over an hour. Makes you mad. All too timid to try a shot on goal. Not one of them had the balls! Going out off the most important competition with a whimper. I do despair. This is NOT the team I know and love.
DeleteNo bullshit talk like SG said after the game at that performance we don't deserve to win let alone be in the competition. I still give BR end of season so we can all look back and see what he has or not achieved. Other then that Basel deserved victory,
DeleteAside from causing you the heartache/headache and pushing up your blood pressure and sugar level when they lost a match, your bank balance do not change. Those guys and the manager are the same one who win or loose will still have their already fat bank balance enrich by some more pounds. Assuming we managed to hedged off Basel, it would still mean delaying the obvious inevitable. It is a fact that the owner would have made extra money in CL which Europa League may not give them, on a bright side we are still in Europa and that means playing in Europe too. Can we go on a win it, NO not with the team and the way we are playing at the moment.
DeleteAs poor as Manchester United is playing at the moment, they are picking up wins from the jaw of defeat. Can we beat them or get a draw on Sunday, very unlikely.
Th more I think about it the more I think that if things get worse between now and Christmas FSG might fancy getting a new manager in before January, they could give him the January kitty and then he has 6 months to get the team used to his methods a full Summer window and could have the squad ready to hit their Straps next September. Lose to United, Arsenal and Swansea which is far from unfeasible and Brendan will be out the door I reckon.
DeleteI believe that as well because the poor performances keep coming no matter how big the game – as I keep saying this season has become a total disaster.
Delete• To lose your best striker through transfer
• 2nd best striker through recurring injuries
• Buying more players than were actually needed
• Buying too many attacking midfielders and not any defensive midfielders
• Not deciding on a back four and sticking with them to create stability and breed confidence in the team
• Not getting a quality replacement for Migs or back up to make him step up his game
We need something to kick start our season before we are out of every competition and looking for a new manager to start all over again.
Is there a new Bill Shankly out there somewhere?
DeleteSimple answer is NO.
DeleteI thought Bodgers would be a guy to try and gradually build our side to a level where we can sustain our position near the top every year but unfortunately he is now not looking like he is ready for this level yet.
I think BR used to believe he was the new Shankly!
DeleteI agree hope BR can do that, turn things around, do you all think if DS was fit and scoring goals, we be in this mess, bringing KD back temp is not the answer.
DeleteI do not think so. Because the one and only game Balo partnered DS, Spurs was at the receiving end. After that game we lost all self belief and any team can just easily come and turn us over.
DeleteThanks, Bill Shankly. There are only 2 teams in Liverpool and they are Liverpool and Liverpool reserves.
DeleteBREAKING NEWS – Mr Brendan Rogers has left Liverpool FC by mutual consent.
ReplyDeleteNot confirmed !!!!
DeleteGuys,
DeleteI do apologise but forgot to mentioned that this is the headline I am wishing for.
Mo
Came out of a meeting to see your breaking news email... good thing I had the good sense to check!
DeleteHow would you have felt had it been true?
DeleteIt would have meant we were again back to square one with another new manager having to rip up the side again and start all over again – the owners need to be very careful how they handle this situation or they will be faced with another crisis where a new manager will want to rebuild and spend another £200m to fix the problem.
DeleteIt's difficult because we are playing as if we are rudderless right now. I keep hoping he'll re-assert himself and come out with something constructive, but so far it's like a rabbit in the headlights, which is difficult because we all like the fella, but like I said previously, he's gone from being as smooth as James Bond in his press conferences to looking like the Brooke Bond monkey.
DeleteForget Suarez and Sturridge, we've gone from ultra-offensive to ultra-defensive in 6 months. The is no in between. Changes are made from game to game for the sake of it without any real rhyme or reason. You begin to ask yourself why did we buy Markovic or Lallana or Manquillo? Why do we have three right-backs? Why didn’t we buy an experience goalkeeper as cover? Just who are all those guys Brendan keeps talking on the bench and what is their added value!?! We had eight centre-halfs before the start of the season how the hell do we find ourselves in the position where the remaining ones are pi*s poor?
Why is Glen Johnson still a Liverpool player? Why did Liverpool ask Suso to return? Why no midfield general? Why no striker cover yesterday on the bench? Is the manager convinced by Lallana? Why send Wisdom out on loan again? Why no world class players? And if so against Borini why didn't he sell him?
I broke of from my food in a restaurant to send this...!
Enjoy your food because Bodgers is putting me off mine at the moment!
DeletePerhaps he's still an apprentice, on probation. Funny you're asking a lot of the questions that have crossed my mind, especially when I was at the Bernabau. What da? Why did....? Who da...?
DeleteI remember a Man U supporter last season saying how glad he was that they were not in the Europa as it was a significant drain on resources. I hope we can use it in a positive way to win the thing, maybe that will be the only way back in the champions league, if thats what we aspire to.
Don't understand the purpose of getting into these competitions if we do not try our very best to show our A game in every game!
DeleteThroughout the six games we did not represent our club with the prestige and pride of a 5 time winner of the damn thing!
Piss poor attempt and if we are not careful we could now be out of the competition for a very long time and this will impact on the money we have to spend whilst the stands are being upgraded.
David tottaly, its not like we got choices, or a squad big and good enough to compete in all competition, let alone each game. This moment in time every game every game is vital so why not play the best squad you have. Our champion league was just a joke, like you say whats the purpose.
DeleteAll,
DeleteCome on guys/ladies, you must have been watching the wrong match. According to Bodgers we did fine, he had the best players on the pitch including all his strikers that he had none left for the bench. Please, please give time, may be 2 weeks.
Was reading the Metro on the train this morning and basically it was mentioned that he does not know his best 11 players and also you play in a match you can guarantee to be dropped the next. Play badly eh Migs and Lovren and you keep your place.
Chances are now I may not even watch the game on Sunday, my excuse I have to go out. Can’t take it anymore.
Mo
Was just listening to Andy Gray talking about our current plight. He basically said, that pure and simple we haven’t got the quality of players and to leave Coutinho and Lallana on the bench was baffling. He went on to say that last year was built on four players (the obvious) and the rest of the players aren’t top quality which is what we are seeing now.
ReplyDeleteLike I said for me, for the distant future he has to find the right mixture of attack and defence and the players to augment that and stand by his decisions. He’s got to use Borini more than he is doing now over the next month at least.
A friend¸ sent me a link to an article by Tony Barratt of the Times which is an interesting read. Here’s the link https://twitter.com/DamianLFCpl/status/542810348022411265?s=07 I have attached the article in case you can’t open the link.
We were asking who take could take over and Mo suggested King Kenny, if Brendan was to get the sack before the seasons end, given most top managers are tied-up, Rafa must be looming large in Brendan’s
I only mentioned KD as a stop gap until Benitez (which I would not mind) is available as we played very exciting football and of course Istanbul.
DeleteAnd I also remember some pretty horrific football towards the end of both their tenures.
DeleteWhen you start to pay attention to Andy Gray you are in trouble mate! But the article by Barrett is spot on, Rodgers has been negligent, he arrogantly believed that he could turn Mario into the answer up front and was wilfully blind to the fact that Mignolet has been dreadful ever since he fumbles that Negredo chip at Christmas 2013. As a result that mythical dossier has gone up in smoke and now we play like we’re the worst team in the league (we aren’t far off it) with makeshift hotch-potch formations and tactics that suit neither the players nor the manager.
DeleteOn a more positive note, because I’ve been a right moan recently, get a good striker and a goal keeper and we’re back in business, trouble with that is that your probably talking about 35 million plus, Is Rodgers going to be trusted to spend that?
With a good keeper, this will allow us to push forward because you know you have someone you can trust.
DeleteBaz and we are in trouble. He's not saying anything new, he's stating the obvious which is we are not good enough in many areas.
DeleteAs I keep saying I'd like him (Brendan) to make it, because I don't want yet another new manager and through all the criticism he had the foresight to play Sterling, Sturridge and Suarez and everyone now doesn't want to give him any credit for doing so. If at the start of January we've won barely a game from this point then that's a different matter and of course the pressure will be ramped up. If Sturridge was playing we'd have scored more. The underlying problems in defence and the midfield are still there and are highlighted as we don't have last seasons fire power.
And we have more worries with Sterling agent playing a wait and see game after knocking back contract talks.
Thanks for sharing that article Mohammed - and hope you're well. The article highlights quite rightly that we're in a serious bit of bother although BR has some credit left in the bank. As Jan commented "unrecognisable from the team last season. What it also does well is to highlight the what ifs. If we do not win our next 3 games, the spotlight will fall on BR again and I think he will be looking at an overdraft. I think anything in excess of 9 points off the top 4 come January will get him the chop. Really hope he can turn things around quickly - he's more out of form than our players!
DeleteYeah but we also badly need a striker who can move about and stick the ball in the net, Hindsight is a great thing but if we’d bought Bony we’d be at least 12 points better off this season.
DeleteWe need to build the spine of the team because we failed to do so in the Summer. There's lots of decent goalkeepers out there. We need to seriously address the engine room which unfortunately means that players like Jo who is simply not consistently good enough at this level, will need to be released. Even Lucas "Lazarus" should be looking over his shoulder, though at the moment he's probably and justifiably the first name on the team sheet.
DeleteI can't blame BR or the Committee for taking a punt at that price on Balo but clearly it's not all his fault? Why always him?
I can blame them, I said it at the time. Regardless of price the guy clearly didn’t suit our style of play, we never should have signed him.
DeleteIt seems as everyone is in agreement that Rodgers has to go and we should start looking for a new manager because a CL exit and performances this season conclusively prove he’s not up to the job. The only reason we qualified for the CL was down to Suarez and Sturridge and had nothing to do with Rodgers management of his squad. In the same way Barca dominated under Pep was all down to Messi?!!
DeleteAnd in even though Man City have struggled the past few seasons in the CL after spending £300m on players we as 5 time winners should have strolled into the latter stages no matter that we’ve been absent for years.
At least with Rodgers gone we could finally get Klopp and overlook the fact his team is bottom of the German league.
It hasn’t been good this season but to start talking about replacing the manager just seems to be a knee jerk reaction (although if we get thumped by Manure on Sunday all bets are off!!!!)
Hello everyone and thank you Vic for adding me to this group. I do not believe we are that bad a team any worse than Swansea, West Ham or Newcastle who are doing better that us right now. Its a mental thing, there is just no belief and it amazes me how this turnaround happened so quickly after a stellar season in 2014. Our defence leaking goals has made BR less adventurous and rather than continue with his attacking philosophy he has succumbed to his fears..
DeleteNot sure if I want KD to be a stop gap though if BR gets shown the door. I actually feel that BR might just be able to turn this around..
DeleteWe all may have the answer by Sunday.... If he does go, who can be lined up to take over, it can be months before some comes in, and not having a manager at a crucial time may not go down well, saying that Right now BR is not a winner any way, apart from last season we never seem to have consistency in out game, problems on problems, comes down to money spend on average players, or good players but don't perform seriously man!
DeleteWelcome Bala, I agree that there is no way Swansea, west ham, Newcastle, Southampton have as good a squad as are but we're just suffering a massive crisis of confidence and br is trying to steady the ship by prioritising solidity...
DeleteDifficult to know what is best as we don't look like creating anything at the min so can understand fear of conceding but then we ain't going look anymore like scoring with hendo playing left wing ahead of Lucas and allen...
The Europa league is understandably much maligned but at least it will offer us more games to try and get new players properly integrated.
Like seriously!! We dropped the point against M.City through the lapses of Mig BR did nothing about fixing it even when that cost us the league SG became the scapegoat. Reina come back please all is forgiven. I am not a serious fan of Rafa, I would not mind him right now!!!
DeleteI'm not calling for the head of Rogers - I want him to fix up. I think he currently has enough credit in the bank. We'll see where we are in February because I do think he'll be in trouble with the owners if we're say 9 points adrift of 4th spot and not in the milk and Europa cups.
DeleteOn a positive note, we're unbeaten in the last 3/4 or for games following a string of successive defeats. Another clean sheet on Sunday would also go some way in giving our guys some much needed confidence.
Remind me again how is BR a winner – because coming 2nd place to me is not winning !!!! I am an old school Liverpool fan where winning trophies and being first is everything – second is nothing !!!!
DeleteI thought us old school fans supported the team and the manager, no matter what?!!!
DeleteBR is our manager and until that has been changed otherwise I will support him as I support the club wholeheartedly – just need him to stop the stubborn nature – if we have Borini fit and available to play why not at least have him on the bench??
DeletePassionately want him to succeed but his almost half season report would say F- no flexibility in his management style – either ultra defensive or too attacking - no mid-point/ stubborn with players and will not play a player if they have upset him even if its for the good of the team i.e. Sakho/Borini.
Can some one remind me please, when Suarez was banned last season who among those players that held fort that are no longer in the Club but for DS?
DeleteEdet, my thoughts exactly, we have not suddenly lost all our old players, it was just Suarez that left. When he was suspended, DS was there to hold the fort and even then we kept winning. What is so different now?
DeleteAll,
DeleteI hate to say this but it is Christmas and Liverpool is the turkey.
Mo
Last night Hart literally delivered the knock out stage of CL for City! Our could not even dive toward where the goal was score on Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteNot just that. Without Aguero, Toure and Kompany and Silva starting on the bench they delivered.
DeleteWith a decent keeper normal programme will resume.
DeleteAs was proven last night with Joe Hart for Man City – once you have a quality keeper you can rely on them in vital games such as must win games such as the one that Man City also had away to Roma.
DeleteAlso, Winning the Euro League this season guarantees CL football – need to win this !!!!
Saw this article
ReplyDeleteAnd ahead of Liverpool'ss trip to Old Trafford to face their bitter rivals on Super Sunday, he says the summer outlay of over £100million is small fry when you take into account the money they received for the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona.
He said: They obviously sold Luis Suarez for £65m and spent (around) £100m on five or six players, so they spent £40m. That's not even touching the sides of what the big European teams do, and are spending when they're really going for it.
When you're talking about a big club and Liverpool winning European Cups over the last 30 years, building a new 65,000-seater stadium; £40m net is not going for it.
Brendan Rodgers paid large fees for Adam Lallana, Emre Can, Alberto Moreno, Lazar Markovic, and the injured Mario Balotelli over the summer, but none of those players started against Basel.
And while Neville says the manager must take responsibility for the signings, he says Rodgers hasn't been given the budget that many of his rivals, including Louis van Gaal, have enjoyed.
He added: Man United have done it, City have done it, Chelsea have done it, Real Madrid will do it.
If you want to go big, go big, and that's not big! So the idea that he's spent a lot of money in great club terms, he's not. He's spent £40m.
They took a star off Brendan Rodgers and he's got five in return and he's obviously picked them so he has to take responsibility for that. And he'll accept that I'm sure.
Big is going to sign a player for £80m. He hasn't gone big; he's touched the sides a little bit. The net spend is £40m, and I don't see that as big net spend for Liverpool Football Club.
â€Å“If they measure themselves in terms of a club winning the Champions League, then they need to spend like one. Then they've got to enter that level and that level is not £40m net spend.
It is not all about the spender winning the day. I am sure Southampton had net income, yet they are doing pretty well. It is all about tactics, strategy on how to win crucial games with the same set of players. Jose is not my kind of person nor manager but give it to him, but I can assure you he would have not be at 9th position if he is given the same players in BR stock to manage.
DeleteDavid is that the new rule? Then all hope is not lost.

DeleteLiverpool unseeded in Europa draw! (Evening Standard)
ReplyDeleteLiverpool's poor displays in the Champions League have resulted in the Reds being unseeded in Monday's Europa League draw.
Brendan Rodgers' side won just one game in their group leaving them classified as one of the four worst performing third place teams.
Uefa confirmed today that the 2005 European Cup winners will be ranked alonsgside Ajax, Anderlecht and Roma for the draw in Nyon.
It means the underperforming Reds could face a host of top sides including Inter Milan, Fiorentina and Zenit St Petersburg.
Napoli, coached by former Reds boss Rafael Benitez will also be seeded if they can seal top spot in Group I with a home win against Slovan Bratislava tonight.
Spanish sides Sevilla and Villarreal could also be potential opponents in the last 32 if they top their groups.
Seeded: Olympiacos, Zenit St Petersburg, Sporting Lisbon, Athletic Bilbao, Red Bull Salzburg, Dinamo Moscow, Everton, Inter Milan, Fiorentina
Unseeded: Anderlecht, Ajax, Liverpool, Roma, Celtic, PSV
I’d rather we play the good teams than the dross. Hopefully we can use the comp to bring on the new guys and give some of the kids a bit of a run out.
DeleteSeeded or unseeded, do not wash for me. Group B was a gift of group for Liverpool to progress to the last 16 in CL, we failed to achieve that, what different will it make now Seeding us?
DeleteI am sure other Countries clubs will be praying to have Basel, not English clubs though.
Totally agree we are a side that struggles to score goals at the moment so therefore are unable to win games !!!
DeleteAgreed. Maybe we start again and treat this competition with respect, whilst also bringing on the younger and newer players at the club who would benefit from some games under their belt.
DeleteI dislike the Vauxhall Van League or whatever Uefa is calling its Thursday night kick-about now, but it does offer the younger players in our squad a bit more European experience before Karl and David have Brendan handed over to the CIA for disrespecting another European tournament when he plays the kids against Red Bull Salzburg.
DeleteAnd while we're at it we might just try winning the Capital One as we are only two games from Wembley.
DeleteMeanwhile, speculation today also suggests Rafa Benitez will leave Napoli to rejoin his family on Merseyside.
ReplyDeleteAnd that has added fuel to the speculation he would love a return to former club Liverpool, after being made a 6-1 favourite to replace current Reds boss Brendan Rodgers.
Despite almost winning the title last season and leading his club into the Champions League for the first time in five years, bookies Paddy Power have mischievously quoted odds on the next Liverpool manager, with Spaniard Benitez favourite at 6-1, ahead of Frank de Boer, Laurent Blanc and Ronald Koeman.
“My wife and two daughters live in Liverpool. It’s the first time I haven’t had them with me, it’s not easy. [Napoli owner Aurelio] De Laurentiis knows how important my family values are to me,” he explained.
Speculation will always be heightened with Rafa. A lot of people think he’s making a concerted effort behind the scenes to get in at Anfield.
DeleteMore interesting and important at the moment is hearing that Adam Lallana has been playing or should I say not playing because he has two broken ribs. The medical staff have been trying to manage the injury with his playing time.
No interest to me, but I see Fernando Torres will be available on a free come January. One goal in ten league matches out in Italy…
Torres is of no interest to me either. Rafa considers Merseyside his home. Perhaps when Wigan kick out their current incumbent or the spineless FA does it for them
DeleteRumours has it that Liverpool are look out for BR replacement.
DeleteWe seem to be collecting strikers who can’t score so Torres would be a welcome addition.
DeleteSituation given more heat by Stan Collymore's article. He said that JW tried to sack Brendan twice recently and was only talked out of it by Iain Ayre and a couple of the club legends who were asked for their opinions.
DeleteBasically, JW is not happy with the quality of the signings brought in and the fact that they are not delivering on the pitch and today Diego Simeone is the name floating around to replace BR.
Pressure is mounting on Brendan Rodgers after the Reds were knocked out the Champions League despite spending £110m in the summer.
DeleteHe splashed out £16m on Mario Balotelli but the gamble hasn't paid off and the Italian bad boy has been more trouble than he's worth.
Balotelli has netted just two goals and has upset senior players at Anfield with his poor attitude.
Atletico Madrid boss Simeone has recently shelved talks over a new contract with the La Liga champions.

He is taking extra English lessons with a private tutor and is understood to be keen on a move to the Premier League.
Sooooo does anybody think we have a snowballs chance in hell on Sunday? As F365 put it this morning it’s a team that can’t defend against a team that can’t score or defend. I’ll let you work out which one we are. A draw will be a good result.
ReplyDeleteApparently, saints be praised, Mario Hopelesso Disastero is back in contention and given that Lambo looked like he was about to expire on Tuesday night it’s a probably going to be the Italians turn to make sure that everything slows down in the final third this weekend. If I was picking a team to get a result, I’d go 4-3-3 with Borini, Sterling and Coutinho up top but given that Brendan has decreed that Borini must not kick a competitive ball for the club ever, ever again I expect us to labour to the inevitable dour, dull, demeaning defeat. Woop woop.
Barry,
DeleteI must confess that I agree with your front 3 but as you say BR will do something else.
Mo
Beginning to think we must have an agreement to offload Borini in January and we don’t want to risk him picking up an injury before we get shot.
DeleteIf United score the best we can hope for is a draw because there’s no way we’re going to score 2 goals in any game at the moment.
As I was saying to David last night given the fact that he is not picking him he may as let him go in January - hopefully Sunderland are still wishing to pay £14 mill.
DeleteMario is in contention for Sunday.
Brendan must be wondering where to turn - Origi missed a penalty last night and now hasn't scored for 923 minutes! Only 3 League goals this season.
I see Origi more as a creator who might chip in with a few goals rather than an out an out goal scorer; to salvage the season we need to put down a large wedge of cash for a proven goal scorer (I’ve written off Sturridge for this season).
DeleteDon’t understand how you can write off Sturridge totally – he is our best striker and once fit will show why !!!
DeleteI think what he was saying is more that he’s not relying on him being fit any time soon given his recovery record so far this season. No doubt he’s a brilliant striker and sorely missed.
DeleteThat’s my point exactly and as he keeps breaking down he might end up with long term damage, seems better to give him a long rehabilitation period followed by a full pre-season. Doesn’t help us this season I know but never too early to start forward planning.
DeleteAnd that's why I was saying to David yesterday move Borini on and buy a striker. Although, the Inter Milan striker Icardi who Brendan been looking at wants Chelsea or London.
DeleteAs soon as Sturridge is ready for action he goes straight back in the team.
DeleteSwiftly followed by you blaming Bodgers (your words not mine) for throwing him in the deep end after a long term injury.
DeleteOh my dayz finally something I agree with if Utd score we can not score twice !!!
DeleteEverybody that BR touch turn to ………………………
Delete…………………..deadwood !!!!
DeleteDROSS….
DeleteWe're still on an unbeaten run, albeit 5 minutes. Hopefully the occasion will, encourage a strong performance.
DeleteWell hopefully BR sets the side up to create and score goals.
DeleteOh my dayz just saw your comment – Sturridge will play this season and score goals to get us out of this rut !!!!
DeleteWhen he does I expect a written email apology from Mr Peters !!!!
I'm hoping we go in with an attacking flavour to the game, not all out, but with an intent to win. Also, with a striker back up on the bench and that Markovic starts given his positive cameo and Lallana's injury.
