From the ensuing series of plays Mignolet was picking the ball out of his own net after striker Ulloa's shot from a tight angle hit the post before rebounding in off the back of Mignolet's head after Jamie Vardy's initial shot had been cleared off the line by Martin Skrtel.
The midfielder added: "I'm happy with the goal but even more pleased with the win. It has been well documented this season that we haven't been good enough.

The offer of a
new contract on the table for our captain – he returned to the side in place of
Joe Allen after being rested versus Stoke at the weekend. Rickie Lambert
started his fourth game in a row in the continued absence of Mario Balotelli and
Daniel Sturridge with Manquillo coming in for the injured Enrique (swollen
knee) and Lallana coming in for Coutinho (slight injury).
The first 20
minutes were uneventful, but again we made a major mistake in our defence conceding
the first goal of the game when our keeper initially kicked the ball from a
goal kick straight to experienced midfielder Cambiasso on his favoured left
boot inexplicably screwed his shot wide. From the ensuing series of plays Mignolet was picking the ball out of his own net after striker Ulloa's shot from a tight angle hit the post before rebounding in off the back of Mignolet's head after Jamie Vardy's initial shot had been cleared off the line by Martin Skrtel.
One down off the back of Mignolet's head |
The really important thing about going behind in a game is response in a
good manner and respond we did. Gerrard’s
free kick was cleared only as far as Lucas on the right-hand side, who
floated it back in the danger area where Morgan could only head into the path
of Lallana. The midfielder connected sweetly with a
lovely footed half volley past Schmeical. Illustrating why we paid big money for him.
Lallana celebrates his equaliser |
Back in the game at 1-1, Liverpool went close with a Skrtel header and
Sterling with a long range run and shot. The score remained 1-1 at the break.
Leicester came out with the serious intention to cause us the maximum
damage, but we have missed the experience of having Lucas in our side to
provide a shield for our weak defence. Despite
the pressure we were showing the capability to resist Leicester’s attempts.
Then the moment we all privately knew was going destined to happen in
this game happened. It was always
going to happen, wasn't it? Gerrard
found Sterling on the left, who squared the ball across the face of the box,
Leicester only half-cleared inviting Gerrard to latch on to the loose ball. Needing little invitation he side footed a
low, firm shot for his first goal from open play since last season.
|
How hard? Gerrard rolls back the years |
Being 2-1 up last season would have meant we went for a third goal to
kill off our opposition, but this is not last season and it means going back
into our shell and trying to hold the lead.
This is exactly what we decided to do until we had a slice of luck when
poor defending by defender Wes Morgan allowed Lambert through on goal until the
defender unceremoniously tussled back by Morgan leaving referee Lee Mason little
choice to issue the defender a straight red despite our striker lacking the
pace to get away from Premiership defences.
Clunsy Morgan sees red |
Leicester going down to ten men seemed to give them even more
confidence, driving us even further into our shell and it was the pattern for
the remainder of the game.
Gerrard was brought down for a blatant penalty by Schmeichel, but
referee Mason bottled the decision to send off two Leicester players in one
game. Leicester midfielder Cambiasso
went close before we finally put the game to bed with the third goal. Gerrard whipped in a superb cross causing consternation in the Leicester defence, allowing Sterling to deliver an impudent back heel for Henderson to dispatch from eight yards. Shades of Sturridge and Suarez at Cardiff last season. The Henderson roar! |
Very interesting stat is that when Henderson scores for us we have never
lost – this run now stands at 11 wins, 2 draws, no defeats.
Leicester continued to press creating one final chance with striker
Ulloa producing a headed effort which was saved by the under-fire Mignolet.
We finally saw the game out despite six minutes of injury time due to
Skrtel blocking a Leicester shot from outside the box with his face and being
slightly concussed.
Positives
The back to back wins which despite the scrappy way they have both come,
will no doubt begin to breed confidence in the squad.
The steady performance of Lucas is just what we required, nothing
spectacular, just doing his job effectively. Exactly what we needed.
Negatives
Our keeper continues to cost us goals and doesn’t provide the defence
with any confidence at all – he needs to be rested for his own benefit or he
will never ever get out of this current downturn in form. At this moment in time Brad Jones seems like a
better option.
Man of the match – Stevie G
Good to see that our manager finally listened to Kop Post and I after
our rant on moving Gerrard further forward.
As a team we benefit by using our best midfielder where he can have a
positive impact rather than playing him in the defensive half of the pitch
where his influence is more easily negated. The ex-England captain was heavily involved in
all three goals and was all over the pitch enjoying his free role and showing
that he still has a lot to offer us despite having a big decision to make on
whether to sign the new contract on offer.
It was especially nice to see him score a goal from open play – when you
see him striding forward to finish you know that he will put the chance away
with aplomb!!! How harrrd? Gerrarrrrrrd!!!

comments:-
Our
manager stated
""I think you saw the energy in his legs tonight and his influence in
the game, especially as [the match] wore on. It was an outstanding performance
from Steven and an excellent goal.
"At
this stage of his career, it's about the level of the game. He's a very
important player for us. Like you saw tonight, he's not 24 anymore.
"You
have to do that with players at this part of their career. So for me it's about
mapping out the rest of the season for him and looking at the games to play him
in. That's what you have to do as a manager - plan forward."
He
said: "People talk about being fair with every player. As a manager and
managing certain players, it's unfair to treat everyone the same, especially
someone of Steven Gerrard's stature.
"I
had a great respect for Steven watching him from the outside - and an even
greater one from the inside working with him.
"I've
shown in my time at Liverpool and anywhere else I've ever been, but
particularly here, the sentiment doesn't come into it for me, it really
doesn't. I pick Steven Gerrard because I still think he can really influence a
game of football for us.
"When
I first came in, people were talking about whether he was going to be able to
play with how I work, but last year he was absolutely magnificent - he scored
14 goals in all competitions.
"Irrespective
of the player or his status, for me it's what is best for the team. I know at
this moment in time, if I can manage Steven Gerrard, his training and his
games, he can still have a real impact for this team.
"Even
though he's approaching 35 at the end of this season, he's still got fantastic
qualities. Like every other player, no matter how good they are, there comes a
time in their career when the wheels are out and they're ready to land - but
he's not ready to land yet. You can see from tonight, he's still got lots of
energy there."
Stevie G stated “"We didn't get
off to the start we wanted, but over the last couple of weeks we have shown
great resilience and great character.
"We showed it again tonight. It could have been more than 3-1. I
think all of us deserve a lot of credit. The last three performances have been
superb and we need to keep trying to improve on that. It was a great team
performance and a great three points."The midfielder added: "I'm happy with the goal but even more pleased with the win. It has been well documented this season that we haven't been good enough.
"But we are on our way up; we're defending better, sticking
together and we're a lot harder to beat. We need to keep moving in that
direction."

Very welcome three points and a battling but very scrappy performance. Not enjoyable watching reds at the min as they struggle to string more than five passes together ( aside from angina inducing passing amongst the back five)
ReplyDeleteThought lambert did really well aside from the off-sides and his impact is a damning indictment of mario. Great to see Gerard having a influence further forward and can see him and Sturridge working well together.
Thought Lucas did decent job, though how he avoided a booking il never know. Thought Allen did well when he came on and is starting to prove himself and important squad player. Lallana took his goal well and always has some nice touch but for me he looks like he lacks that yard of pace, and a bit of strength, to be a world class player and on current form he wouldn't be getting in my first 11 but as with all new signings bit unfair to judge in a still struggling side.
Fingers crossed another three points on sat will send us in to Basel game and great atmosphere at anfield I'm good spirits, ahead of games against united and arsenal before Christmas.
Delighted for the back to back win - especially pleased to see Gerrard playing further forward and having more influence going forward rather than in the defensive half of the pitch.
DeleteOur keeper is just getting worse every game His kicking has always been woeful when he was at Sunderland but as he has now lost his confidence it has now got embarrassingly worse - he is not even making any effort to come out for crosses at the moment - I think our legendary keeper Grobbelaar's comment about him being Dracula - "afraid of crosses" has affected him even more than expected.
Skrtel was extremely poor yesterday - going to ground too early on several occasions.
Lallana was very tidy and took his goal well.
Lambert was watching the game too much and because he was not constantly moving it meant he was in an offside position too many times yesterday. He needs to really work on that side of his game as he is currently seen by our manager as our only option up front.
Henderson stat is interesting 13 goals for us in total and never been on the losing side when he scores - does that mean once we go behind he will not step up his game in case the record gets broken !!!
Roll on Sunderland on Saturday- would be good to make it three wins in a row.
Very welcome win, aided by our captain and vice captain. A clean sheet would have been the icing on the cake (and a decent performance)was at Selhurst Park watching one of our recent conquerors fall to Vill but was but didn't miss an incident in the game thanks to Dave "Motty" Douglas.
Deleteas they say a Win that counts..
DeleteAgreed. Now let keep it up.
DeleteI think Mignolet and Skrtel making too much mistakes at the back which will cost us, no communication, no concentration, no order, and no authority. Maybe in times for Jones to step in for a few games.
DeleteTouré had a good game, kept his composure and did not make mistakes, same with Johnson. Henderson played well, but I think his form had dipped slightly, and Lucas just gave unassay fouls away
Lallana had a good game, and got stuck in, nice foot work and great goal, worked hard for the team, like to see him play more in the first line up. Has always Sterling ran his socks off, but unfortunally he had not support from the other teams members and ended up cornered, I said this before we all need to attack together and provide opportunities for each other, keep the ball moving, no point go forward with two players, and the rest sit back, seen this to many times and it’s like if the rest of the team can’t be just don’t bothered
Glad Lambert got a call, I think we just need to keep him going, his got premiership player experience, but he looked a bit out of the game, and lost.
Finally Super Gerrard saves the day, for me his best position, further down the field, these are the moments when his energy comes in, and wins games. We need to play him in this position from now on, we get more out of him, not back up the filed, because he will struggle, with today’s midfield pace.
Our defence still looks panic-prone and basically because we tend to hold the ball too long at the back, thus making mistakes, you would have thought with Leicester down to ten men, we should of taking the advantage on this, but happy for the win.
Right now any win comes with a royal welcome more so that Ming early Xmas gift which was rejected would have spelt a disaster for us. He didn’t in my view recover from that mistake before his own goal. Reina please come back all is forgiven!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DeleteSad to note that even when Leicester was a man light, we were the one under severe pressure. Sterling has become the man every clubs single out for doubling marking!!
DeleteInteresting that BR response to Migs weakness at corners and set pieces is to afford the keeper even more protection, we basically built a fortress around our 6 yard box bringing every outfield player back. Its surely time BR takes MIgs out of the firing line for a few games, his confidence is shot, makes crucial mistakes in every game and spreads panic throughout the back four.
DeleteHe’ll probably stick with him until the Bournemouth game, then ease him out. I was listening to Neil Warnock recently and he was talking about Speroni and how good he’s been over the past 18 months. Basically, he said that Speroni’s performance went up a notch when he signed Magnus Henderson, the Welsh No 1 keeper. It put genuine competition up his backside and raised his level. I was keen that we kept Reina if we decided that we were not going to replace him. We missed out on our target – the young English keeper from Reading and didn’t bother to go for anyone else – that’s been a very costly mistake. We all know what a good shot stopper Migs is but unfortunately as Barry has pointed out in the past, its only about a 1/3rd of the requirements of a modern day goalkeeper.
DeleteI heard Ian Wright comment that complimenting Migs for being a good shot stopper is the equivalent of saying an outfield player is a good striker of the ball, have to agree stopping shots is the basic requirement of any goalkeeper.
DeleteLack of competition is a clear problem as it tends to lead to a lack of motivation, however I think Migs is also suffering from having his performances scrutinised after every game at a level he would not have experienced at Sunderland. If Sunderland concede sloppy goals its business as usual, if Liverpool do it creates a national inquiry until the next game.
Ulloa goal should have been stopped in the first instance, Migs should have got his body down quicker and pounced on the ball, and then you also get Skrtel, looking in disbelief, a bit lTom and Jerry for me.
DeleteThe route cause of the first goal was the GJ bursting forward and in the process left his position unmanned.
DeleteAs Luke says it’s difficult to watch, but a win is a win. We were disjointed and could easily have been two down.
DeleteIt’s hard to understand why Brendan keeps tampering with the defence. Moreno one week, Manquillo the next and not for the first time being substituted at half-time. No need for me to add to the Mignolet criticism, hence to say he was bloody awful. No surprise to hear rumours today that we’re about to offer Neto £125,000 a week. Mkhitaryan may soon be available with Dortmund languishing down near the bottom of the Bundesliga and if we have any sense we’ll go back in for him again and this time arm ourselves with a cheque book with more than one leaf in it. I was only thinking last week we should attempt to raid Dortmund giving their desperate situation.
Good to see three different goal scorers and Rickie making himself a handful on top.
I would not think we should be the one bailing out a player like Mkhitaryan given the way he treated us when you needed him most.
DeleteRather than MKhitaryan surely a mobile centre forward is required as part of the reason we look so disjointed is that play crawls to a standstill when the ball finally reaches Lambert on the odd occasion he’s not languishing in an offside position.
DeleteI know Sturridge has been out long term but our abandonment of the football principles that served us so well last season is in no small part down to the fact there’s no movement at the top end of the field.
Dead right Sterling make all the run, look up no LFC player anywhere up front. He ended up trying to get a free kick in the opposition area.
DeleteOne striker does not a summer make.
DeleteThere are others issues with the team which we’ve seen all season and he would help move the ball on and add to the goal tally because he is not one dimensional. Also, yes we once we have a striker(s) we can go back to the principals which served us well as you say, but when it came to the crunch last year there was no alternatives and we need to develop on that or you’ll have the Mourinho's of this world putting out teams where they drop deeper to negate the positive parts of our game. With Sturridge injured and Suarez gone, it’s shown up the deficiencies elsewhere in the team which needs to remedied.
I was off so didn’t get to stick in my two penneth worth. I was very glad to see us record back to back wins and get up the table, we played well in patches. For me Lucas was the best player on the pitch, he may have gave away fouls but at least he was getting into the right areas to break up attacks and going forward he made simple but effective passes, him and Kolo both continue to justify their selection and have undoubtedly made us harder to beat.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that there is still an obvious need for us to get a new keeper in as quickly as possible, after that pass to Cambiasso I’m convinced that Brendan will have finally have realised that Simon needs to go. Some of the nervy, freaked out football that we played in the dying minutes against a ten man Leicester side when we had a two goal advantage sums up the complete lack of confidence in this Liverpool side and was mildly embarrassing, this year we are a team convinced that we can lose a game from any position.
In regards to potential transfers I’m convinced that a capable, mobile, nippy striker and a competent pro active goal keeper would transform us into a pretty tidy outfit. We definitely don’t need any more attacking midfielders! However I don’t see FSG giving Rodgers any funds in January to address the problems areas.
The only striker we might be able to get near who fits the bill is Paulo Dybala and he'll cost over £40 mill.
DeleteFraser Forster is a brilliant shop stopper, but is another who has problems under the high ball... For me and I'm probably alone in thinking this, but a top class goalkeeper while he may instil some confidence and slow the amount of goals conceded, is not going make us into one of the best defences because the midfield is still not strong enough to do a total containment job. In saying all that the Sunderland game is key, as others have said, win that and it will put us in the right frame of mind for Basel, lose and we'll be languishing behind United and Arsenal.
We are playing better defensively, but Leicester showed why they are down there, they didn't take their chances.
All,
DeleteDavid and I were exchanging tests last night about Pool Keeper. He said that we should go for Fraser Forster but Pool are looking at Neto (Brazilian) of Fiorentina. We are also looking at Martin Odegaard.
Mo
We had our chance to go for Forster in the Summer but we didn’t take it. We tried for the young English keeper who I think ended up at West Brom. We just need some competition in that department or cluster!
DeleteIts not just about competition Mignolet now looks like a keeper that has been kept in the spotlight too long.
DeleteIf we stay in contention for a top four spot, I think FSG will stump up cash for a striker and keeper as continued CL qualification is a big part of their business model. Just not sure if our scouting system can be relied upon to deliver the players that meet our recruitment policy.
DeleteKeeper – I believe Fraser Forster should be get the job, problem is everyone knows how desperate we are …. So it is thoughts of money money money.
DeleteDoesn’t Migs play for Belgium?
DeleteNo Courtois (Chelsea) plays for Belgium – he is the poor back-up keeper!!!!
DeletePeters,
DeleteI am glad that you mentioned SCOUTS because this something that we touch on, ours must be awful which need addressing.
No chance of Migs becoming Belgium no1 with Chelsea keeper in charge who will not have the sniff.
DeleteUnfortunately Ming is not helping his case by continually making those school boy mistake. Keep him on the bench for two or 3 games then play him the Carling Cup to see how he perform against Bournemouth. Gradually he craw back the back the confidence.
ReplyDeleteHere’s a decent piece from F365 on the game in general and Lucas’s impact – Part 1
ReplyDeletePraising Liverpool's character has been the default setting for Brendan Rodgers in recent weeks. Defeat (Real Madrid), draw (Ludogorets) and victory (Stoke), all have been treated with a praising of his side's fight or resilience. These were attributes certainly present during the 3-1 victory at the King Power Stadium, as Liverpool took points after conceding the opening goal for the first time this season.
The recent suspicion surrounding Liverpool is that "We showed great character and spirit" is actually a euphemism for a lack of quality both in attack and defence, but it might be that the only way for them to address their poor start is to resort to mere determination. The attacking verve of last season just isn't available.
Liverpool were fortunate at times, Leicester offering their hosts a series of early festive gifts. Wes Morgan was sent off for bring down Rickie Lambert after an hour before Kasper Schmeichel sealed the fate of his own side, but Rodgers will care not a jot. This was only the second time his team have won consecutive league games this season and only their third away win of the campaign.
Leicester's Thai owners made the bizarre decision to fly in a group of Buddhist monks this week in order to try and solve a run of eight matches without victory, but there was to be no zen-like calm on the face of Nigel Pearson, who must be deeply concerned for his short-term future. What's the opposite of nirvana? Oh, I give up.
Pearson's side took the lead largely through the persistence of Leonardo Ulloa, who chose not to settle for a corner, cutting back onto his left foot and striking the ball against the near post. It then rebounded off the head of Simon Mignolet and into the goal. The Belgian may feel that the world is currently against him, but he should have been punished for another sorry mistake even before that misfortune. A casual clearance found Esteban Cambiasso thirty yards from goal, who somehow stroked the ball wide.
Rodgers had chosen to drop Joe Allen in favour of a return for Steven Gerrard, and it was the captain who gave Liverpool the lead in the second half following Adam Lallana's equaliser. Gerrard was operating as the most advanced central midfielder - has the experiment as 'quarterback' now been abandoned?
Gerrard's goal was met with an extraordinary reaction from the commentators. Michael Owen proclaimed that "this is why you write him off at your peril", as if Liverpool's captain had been tossed aside by Rodgers rather than on the bench for one home league game. Owen also gave Gerrard his man of the match award despite Raheem Sterling being easily more effective. Presumably you just can't write a script like that; Hollywood producers are tingling in anticipation.
Part 2
DeleteOne result of Gerrard's move back up the field is the re-introduction of Lucas Leiva into a holding role. One wouldn't have been surprised had Lucas showed signs of frostbite such has been the length of his spell out in the cold, but the Brazilian adds a bite that no other fit Liverpool player can. He is at least a round peg in round hole.
Lucas made three more tackles than any other player on the field, and no Liverpool player made more interceptions. He also won back possession on 12 occasions, again more than any other player on the pitch. Finally, he committed double the fouls of any of his team mates and yet was not booked. It may be an exercise in gamesmanship, but Liverpool have missed that kind of cynicism. Theirs is a defence that needs protecting, and Lucas does it better than anyone else at Anfield.
A fortnight ago, Lucas' agent was publicly discussing a January move to Napoli, but the midfielder's only likely move is a shift higher up in his manager's estimations. "Lucas is aggressive but can also attack," Rodgers said in the build up to Tuesday's match. "Ludogorets, Stoke - he's been excellent. It's been a great credit to him and his professionalism. I'm very happy with his performances. I think his contribution has been vital in the last two games."
If Liverpool are going to be gritty rather that glittery as they look to find their feet, Lucas will be a vital part of Rodgers' plans. Liverpool's record in matches this season in which he has played a part reads: P10, W7, D1, L2. They've won two of 11 games without him. The only wonder is that it has taken this long.
Proclaiming Liverpool's resurgence on the evidence of this victory would be both drastic and foolhardy - Leicester had more shots, shots on target and corners despite playing for a third of the match with ten men.
However, the ability to withstand meaningful second half pressure before punishing their opponents is a pleasant experience for supporters accustomed to defensive uncertainty. It should come as no coincidence that it was achieved by playing a specialist defensive midfielder in that position rather than shoehorning in your ageing captain. A lesson learned for Rodgers
Fantastic write up!!
DeleteIt shows how slow Brendan has been in reacting to his sides defiencies. Lucas is the only player in the Liverpool side capable of playing an out and out defensive role, so obviously he's numbers are going to be far more impressive than anyone else's and that's not decrying his performances. He is not Matic and neither is Lambert the new Sturridge, but it is a case of needs must and interesting that it was Joe Allen who was dropped.
DeleteI think competition is exactly what Migs needs to get himself together and eliminate the errors. Their goal wasn’t really his fault – that’s just how it is at times. However, the pass to their player where he missed an open goal says it all. Nervous and poor judgement. Jo Hart had a spell on the sidelines and the keeper who came in kept a few clean sheets and put in a great performance. Notice the difference in Joe Hart since then? Jones is rubbish, not really a decent alternative. Maybe you could slot him in for the Bournemouth game and if Migs is still off form maybe that’s a way of easing onto the sidelines.
DeleteLucas “Lazarus” Levia! I seriously thought the guy was dead after the roasting he got at Palace last season. I guess if you asked Jamie Carragher he’d probably pick Lucas in that role ahead of anyone else. Hopefully Lazarus can be effective on a consistent basis in that role because nobody else seems able to fill it. I wonder whether Henderson might be asked to change his game to anchor the midfield if Lucas is off form although we’d lose other aspects of our play.
Does Can not play defensive mid, I think it’s a decent shout for him to play understudy to Lucas in that position when required. Stevie’s time as the anchor is at an end.
DeleteYes he does and he's a better footballer to boot, but whether Brendan is going to give him the run of games to get him up to speed at this time is debatable.
DeleteCan-Can play either in the holding position or more advanced from what I’ve seen of him. He seems to be comfortable putting his foot in, passing, and running with the ball.
DeleteGood to hear that the club will begin the redevelopment construction on Monday.
ReplyDeleteAs we have all previously seen plans in the past, Yes it looks great in principle but until I see it finished and go to Anfield to see the improvement in place myself I will remain sceptical.
DeleteFSG's view that stadiums & clubs are separate entities was used as the explanation for the 120 million pounds of new stadium debt loaded onto LFC by FSG taking out loans with the corruption-riddled banks - RBS; Bank of America & Barclays.
Given that FSG have 30 billion dollars' wealth - they could easily have financed this themselves to assist us if they REALLY had the club's interests at heart.
Really like the picture from LFC website showing all the LFC legends sitting together would have been nice to see John Barnes invited to the photo shoot!
Nice to see Jordan Rossiter acknowledged as a potential major player in the not too distant future!
Long term we need to be looking to get our stadium up to 65-70,000 capacity to start making some serious revenue money!
We are so far behind Man Utd and even more worrying Arsenal on revenue - Arsenal took the calculated gamble on getting a brand new stadium and the monetary income figures now show the gamble paid off as they earn more than 2 and a half times per game what we do in matchday revenue.
The only ways we are going to be able to attract the best players to the club is to increase revenue via the stadium and commercially worldwide as just qualifying for the CL is just not enough!
Saw the “changing room” picture in the Metro this am and it made my day.
DeleteOpta,
DeleteIf you remember when we went up to see the Sunderland game a few seasons ago their Stadium was very impressive.
The capacity is 49,000 and it's built in way where they can stack layers on to increase the capacity should they so wish.
If it's anything like Sunderland’s it will be very, very impressive!!!!
Delete
