Liverpool 0 Sunderland 0: Gerrard fails to ignite mediocre Reds

Workmanlike is a good description of Liverpool right now.  Without Gerrard, rested for the club’s most important game of the season against Basle next Tuesday, Sterling and to a lesser degree Lallana and Coutinho provided patches of quality without the killer touch in the final third.

Liverpool now laid out not to concede with Lucas studiously protecting Toure and Skrtel shorn of the explosive front line of last season.   Lambert, manfully holding the frontline together, was starved of any decent supply, but for one cross his ex-Southampton team mate which he headed wide.
The lack of intensity which has so marked Liverpool season was again there from the start as Sunderland settled down to a comfortable rhythm, looking easy on the eye and dominating possession to such a level that they swallowed up 62 per cent of the ball in the first 20 minutes dominating the midfield with some slick interchange and movement and may have felt hard done by with a penalty claim as Wickham clashed with the ungainly Skrtel.

Sunderland’s game plan was to get amongst Liverpool doubling up on Sterling leading to a battle royal between the youngster and Virgini.  Liverpool struggled to break through the two banks of a well organised Sunderland defence.
If anything, the away team should have gone into the break one up with Liverpool once again ill at ease defending corners.  Brown stole in unchallenged to header over with the goal at his mercy.

If the Anfield faithful thought the second period would be a different story, Gus Poyet’s team had other ideas and had Conor Wickham not sliced his volley from Skrtel’s miscued headed clearance Sunderland would have taken a well-deserved lead.
Liverpool looked like a team devoid of confidence, belief and more importantly passion and it was no surprise to see Steven Gerrard warming up on the hour.   Sterling, cutting in from the left fed Lucas with an inviting chance from 20 yards, but the Brazilian’s shot was gathered far too easily low down by Pantilimon.  Given the time and space it was the type of chance which should been arrowing into the corner, but unfortunately Gerrard had yet to enter the fray.

Gerrard’s introduction saw a sudden induced level of performance which has been lacking throughout from the home team.   He stunning volleyed passed with check side spun inside the defender and into the path of Coutinho was from the Gerrard school of genius and no other player of the pitch could have thought let alone played the pass.
Sterling winning the ball in the left back position ran to the edge of the area taking on all comers before finding Coutinho whose shot was well saved by Pantilimon.

Sunderland were not finished with Gomez letting loose on a severe drive which Mignolet palmed away at full stretch.
Gerrard controlling the tempo mounted one last chance, spraying an inimitable cross field ball out to Sterling on the left, who in turn found Lambert on the far post to nod back to Markovic who saw his shot blocked, but unfortunately for Liverpool Gerrard just failed to connect with the loose ball to sweep it home.

Man of the Match:  Steven Gerrard – Quite simply Liverpool didn’t turn up until the skipper replaced Lallana and while another clean sheet cannot be sniffed at the lack of players in the home team capable of taking the game by the scruff of the neck is worrying.  Gerrard in his 23 minutes on the pitch played with guile, intensity and it seemed to me anger looking to run and take on defenders down the flanks.  Let’s hope that intensity runs into Tuesday.
The positive is another clean sheet, but under close scrutiny there is still a huge problem at corners and we were lucky not to concede.

The creative element leaves a lot to be desired with Lambert seeing very little quality providing him with scoring opportunities.  We failed to get a shot on target until Lucas shot in the 62 minute which says a lot about our cutting edge and to be fair Sunderland’s defensive resilience.
Brendan Rodgers post-match comments: "I thought the players gave everything and in the second half. They needed a wee bit of luck and it didn't come.

"If you can't win it's important you don't lose. We've taken seven points from nine this week which is a good return for us.
"Stevie coming on gave everyone a lift.  I thought him and Raheem were outstanding."

  1. Clean sheet is great but can't hide the attacking deprivation. An opportunity to push on was missed but it's not too long since we were losing 4 games on the trot. We now seem to be focussed on the champions league which we didn't seem too bothered about against Madrid.

    1. My train got delayed at Crewe for an eternity so late into Liverpool. Arrived Anfield 3.25 pm. Bore fest! Better up our game Tuesday or else.

No urgency. Passing endlessly only to lose the ball. Groans from the fans. Complacency from Johnson at times. All seemed scared to shoot on goal.

    2. We have a problem in our team and philosophy if you keep relying on SG. It can't be up to him every single game to come in a win it for us, etc. Of course he is world class, but we now need to utilise, him differently.

We missed out on three wins in a row, which would have been perfect, in a short burst, but we cannot put the weight on our captain to clinch games.

    3. Totally agree we now need to have other players stepping up it would be fantastic for someone else to step up as the hero vs Basel like Hendo!

  2. Apparently Andre Villas Boas has been asked to outline his coaching philosophy to FSG as they consider replacing Brendan Rodgers –

    LIVERPOOL LINE UP AVB
There is only one place to start with the gossip this morning, and that is the bold claims in The Times that Liverpool are considering an approach for Zenit St Petersburg coach Andre Villas-Boas. You may remember him from such things as Chelsea and Tottenham.

Despite Chelsea's defeat this weekend, Liverpool still sit 15 points from the top, and whatever happens in Southampton v Manchester United, they will be six points off the top four after tonight. It really hasn't gone well.

The paper report that Fenway Sports Group are shocked at the lack of title challenge from Brendan Rodgers' team this season. The even bigger surprise is The Times' claim that 'Villas-Boas has been asked to outline his coaching philosophy and methods as FSG consider their options'.

Villas-Boas has enjoyed good success at Zenit, where he is likely to win the league title in his first full season at the club. Quite whether that has redeemed his reputation enough to be considered for his third Premier League top-six job in three years is unclear.

    1. AVP, Sorry, he does not wash for me!!!!

    2. The pertinent word in that article is “gossip”, its inconceivable that any board will consider replacing a coach just 6 points off the top four and still in the CL (at least for a few more days) with a coach who has crashed and burned twice in the PL in recent times.

      Delete
    3. Yeah it’s gossip but the times are generally pretty well informed, I think that Rodgers will get this season but it looks like FSG are accepting CVs and looking at the possibility of giving Brendan the bullet next Summer.

    4. Or it could well be to put a bit of pressure on BR. I think that if he gets funding for new players next month then they may keep him. No funding then he …………………..

      Delete
    5. Hopefully this is pure speculation. AVB had the opportunity to come to us but didn't he turn us down?! BR has to be given longer whilst a top four finish is still possible and realistic.

    6. After tonight’s game between the Scum and Southampton we’ll be 6 points off fourth. Then the league fixtures for LFC up to the January sales look like this –

      Man U - away
      Arsenal – home
      Swansea – home

So chances are that we’ll probably be 9 to 12 points off top four after that little lot. At what point do FSG decide to just write this season off? I’d say 12 points adrift in January might not be the most prudent time for them to go out and splash 40 million on Edison Cavani.

    7. I possibly can understand where they are coming from. AVP was to be the next big thing among Europe coach and when Jose get a sack Chelsea was brought in as he had just won the Europa with Porto having taken over from Jose there. He lack man management skill as I understand it. He has so far failed to live to the hype of the “next special one”.

    8. If this paper trash talk was true it would show again that our owners have no clue about football – Bodgers needs to be given time to fix his mess up but if we do not qualify for CL football I believe he will struggle to keep his job mainly because last season we were ahead of schedule with a title challenge.

Bodgers transfer dealings so far have been shocking to say the least but he will need to be given time to turn this disastrous spell around.

      Delete
    9. Deserves to be given time.

    10. I would have young striker Jerome Sinclair on the bench tomorrow to throw on with 10 mins to go if we need a goal desperately.

Borini needs to be thrown on with 30 mins to go if we are drawing (if our stubborn manager decides to at least put him on the bench for such a vital game)

      Delete
    11. If, as it seems, he is now taking the champions league seriously, BR needs to have a big game tomorrow too. Must have the option to bring a striker on although they could have blooded someone before now.

    12. Give him the season but as time goes bye I’m coming round to the idea that Rodgers might not be the man for the job long term. If you think of what he has done with the squad while spending over 200 million quid –

Lucas is still the best defensive mid at the club, We are still overly reliant on an aging Gerrard, How on earth is Martin Skrtel still a regular fixture in the back four and he’s downgraded the goal keeper considerably.

Rodgers is lauded for his ability to get a tune out of players but Jordan Henderson aside who has he really brought along? Sturridge and Coutinho were both clearly excellent players from day one and Sterling I would suggest has the natural ability to thrive in practically any environment. What about the players that Rodgers has brought in who didn’t hit the heights required and have been unceremoniously binned by the manager – Borini, Sahin, Sakho, Ilori, Alberto, Aspas and by the looks of things at least two of Markovic, Can, Balotelli and Moreno will soon be added to that list, that’s not exactly a glowing record at improving players.

Every season we leak goals like a sieve but last year we had a football genius (who Rodgers inherited) up front who distracted from some glaring inadequacies, Gus Poyet said last year that shorn of Suarez Liverpool would be a mid-table side and it looks like he was right. 120 million has been thrown at the wall and not one area of the team has improved, Rodgers is increasingly looking like an Emperor without any clothes.

    13. Good points Barry but the so-called Transfer Committee is equally to blame as every player bought in under Rodgers is approved by group decision where financial viability and sell-on profitability seem to have equal standing with talent but when a purchase struggles its only the manager’s head on the chopping block.

In all honesty our recruitment policy has been poor for years, Rafa had it just about right before the Yanks pulled the financial rug.

      Delete
    14. It does seem to be a joint decision about bringing in players - with the Balo deal, rumour has it that BR was informed of his arrival rather than instigating it.

      Delete
    15. He talked up Markovic as a player he'd been watching for at least two seasons and Lallana, Moreno and Lovren are definitely his players. The fact that so many of his buys have failed so spectacularly is a huge deal and is down to both him and the transfer committee.

He definitely deserves praise with Sturridge and Coutinho as know one else wanted to take the risk with Sturridge who was obviously a good player, but had an unfounded reputation as being difficult because he wanted to play as a central striker. Coutinho was called back to Inter and was never going to break trough.

Since these two not one buy has hit the ground running.

    16. Bodgers will be fired before the transfer committee but they should be equally to blame.

    17. I'm going to be patient and hope that St least a couple of them come through.

    18. I think we can give him tell end of season and what is the out come. January we should use if we can get some quality powerhouse in to score goals in creep up the table, getting champions league spot then I think most of is would be happy. Then build on this and then think about keeping BR or getting a new manager in.

  3. Baz, I wouldn't even bother looking that far ahead. It's all Basle and Man Utd. Win those games and Brendan's back in everyone's good books, lose and he and we are in the mire.

    1. With what squad or tactic or defence are you going to win those two games? Man U 5 weeks ago, we will possibly be talking about a draw or win but right now they are in the up side. Not that they are any better. Beating Arsenal away was their biggest lottery because but for their keeper they would have been about 3 or 4 goals down in the first 20 mins.

  4. Lets have a new hero tonight because we always have to rely on Gerrard and the time has now come for other players to step up to the plate as Gerrard as we all know will not always be there to save the day !!!!

The result is everything but it would be great to finally have a performance with the result.

    1. Tonight is going to be a rough watch, Basel are flying and we are currently very average, if we do manage to win it will be by a slim margin. Rumour has it that young Sinclair will get a place on the bench in case we need attacking options late on. This the squad I would pick in full

      Starting 11 –

      Ming
      Manquillo Skrtel Toure Moreno
      Lucas
      Hendo Gerrard
      Sterling Borini Coutinho

Subs – Jones, Lambert, Markovic, Allen, Johnson, Can, Lovren

Rodgers will not play Borini though so I expect Lambert (who looked knackered on Saturday) to start with Sinclair on the bench. If Lambert starts I expect Lallana to get start at the expense of Coutinho too.

    2. Man U won a lottery at Southampton last night. I hope we can have such luck. Garry declared that Man U went away with murder, implying they played so poorly and went home with the whole 3 points. The Dutch Manager fails to see the point by asking Garry to learn how to chose his words carefully. Southampton unfortunately have put on two decent performances and ended up with no point.

For tonight, I am not sure what to expect!! I think the love affair of BR and GJ will continue, he will play Johnson, through thick and thin. That is the way it is.

      Delete
    3. As I said to Karl, David and Luke last night "Got to say with United winning tonight things are getting bleaker by the minute. If United beat us Sunday it's as good as all over because they'd be 10 points clear and with us struggling to put anything in the onion bag the signs are not great.

Lose tomorrow and it's Thursday night football which could be devastating League wise. Not positive I know, but the situation calls for a reality check.

Baz, I'd play Stevie further forward because he is the one player who can operate like a surgeon general with that killer pass in the final third and Coutinho's still operating like a junior doctor - plenty of promise, but subject to the odd mistake. And we know that Johnson will play.

Been saying to David for a while now that we should have young striker on the bench because it's obvious BR doesn't trust Borini and for that matter a young midfielder - not every game obviously, but we need something different like pace. We have one player with extreme pace in the attacking areas which is another reason why we are struggling because we can't stretch teams.

      Delete
    4. “Coutinho's still operating like a junior doctor - plenty of promise, but subject to the odd mistake.”

      Classic line!!!

As Karl knows we call Coutinho the carpenter as he is always hitting the woodwork !!!!

    5. What happen if we win tonight? Where to next? I know that D Sturidge will be back but ……………………

      Delete
    6. Yeah I agree Vic although I have Gerrard down as part of a midfield three I’d make sure he operates number 10 as much as possible for the goal threat and also to keep him and lucas out of each others way.

      Delete
    7. Well if we win tonight then the champ league has a break until February by which time we would hopefully have Sturridge back and possibly even another new striker. Rodgers is quoted in the times today as saying that by February we’ll be a much better team, nice one Brendan it’s great to hear that we can look forward to not being utter poop in February, Merry Christmas!!!

    8. Barry,

My point is that we need some new blood in the team if we qualify to the next stage in the CL.

      Delete
    9. Yeah I agree Mo, I’d say we need new blood in the team full stop, qualify or no, but if we do qualify I reckon that FSG will be more inclined to get their big wallet out again.

    10. No 1 priority, a new keeper.

    11. No keeper+No defence+no striker = defeat with a capital D. When in summer we were shopping at Lidl, Aldi , 99P, Poundland, we forgot to get occasion Tesco, Sainsbury and M&S in order to use their carry bag to package stuff from Lidl, Aldi , 99P and Poundland.

      Delete
    12. When you're playing with the big boys, you shop at Waitrose and M&S. You might look at Sainsburys for back-up or Tesco for a Rickie Lambert and Lidl and Aldi should you need a new net or a Brad Jones.

      Delete
    13. I personally think that there is only one shop to buy from and it is Harrods. This is where City and Chelski go shopping.

    14. It’s alright buying Lambert as an option but for him to end up as your only Striker is ridiculous, Rodgers was trying to defend the Balotelli transfer at the weekend saying that it was late in the window and we had to buy someone just to get the number up…. Luis Suarez bit Chellini on the 24th June, that’s over 2 months to sort out a suitable striker and it’s not like Suarez had made noises that he might fancy a move previously, talk about negligence????

      Delete
    15. We should have insisted that Sanchez was part of the Suarez deal once we allowed Barca the opportunity of a straight cash deal we were then left scrabbling around for a replacement in the few short weeks between the end of the world cup and the start of the new season.

      Delete
    16. I think he/they got caught up in the "we've got to have a big name replacement and Wilfried Bony isn't big enough or good enough for this club and there is no way we are spending over £40 mill on anyone who doesn't have the viability of being sold on later".

Bar Lambert every player brought in was bought under the premise that should they play well we'd at least get our money back in the future. Even Lallana is young enough and that to me is the reason why they spent £23 million on him, Lovren too.

We need proven at the top level, not possible future champions. Not saying Markovic or Lallana won't graduate, but we were sitting at the top table ready to eat foie gras and now maybe banished to eat fried chicken and not even at the KFC, but the local Dixy Fried.

We should have been thinking like a Champions League club, instead we speculated to accumulate. Maybe, those rumours about AVM were true, but probably more about revising some of the chapters in Brendan's 180 pages!

      Delete
    17. I really like to see Lallana come out to be an even better player for us and really become a top player for us, I like he’s style of play, just needs to build on this and become a proper squad player, like Hendo has improved. I think we really need to go out and attack tonight, nothing to lose, really go for it, I hope we don’t play the pass back game in our half. I think Coutinho is an excellent player and plenty of talent, but when he starts to play and build play, no one is going forward or providing option, I hope we don’t see that tonight. We just seem to stop and slow down our game...

      Delete
  5. On a different note one AFC Wimbledon support yesterday morning said Liverpool may be draw against them. So it was, last night when the came he got his wish. However, I am not going to ask him what the score will be for tonight. Get a win first David and think about performance later.
