Brendan’s pulled in some creative elements in this transfer window with Lallana, Markovic, Lambert and Can arriving. Defensively we’ve brought in Lovren and as I write Alberto Moreno and Javier Manquillo are on the verge of signing.
So why does it seem as if there is something missing? Sturridge and Lambert are quality players, but are we really expecting to go into battle with two strikers hoping that Sterling, Coutinho and Henderson morph into prolific goal scorers?
Before the end of the transfer window another striker or a world-class second striker is a pre-requisite and with Rodgers deciding that Fabio Borini is to be moved on it is now a matter of urgency. Reus or Bony or a player of that ilk would fit the bill nicely.
Another strong midfielder aside Emre Can wouldn’t go amidst either, as I’ve been wittering on about in the last couple of blogs, to present more of a physical threat/option in the central areas. Brendan seems to be throwing in his lot with Allen and Lucas and one can only hope that Conor Coady and Jordan Rossiter make their breakthroughs this season as to my mind they have the attributes we are missing with our plethora of attacking midfielders.
I believe Conor Coady has benefitte rom spending last season on loan and will now be ready and able to do a job for the first team if required and I now believe Rossiter should now go on loan to gain the same benefits that regular games gives you, a team such as Swansea or Southampton would be excellent for him to gain more experience and playing time.
ReplyDeleteWe've done pretty well in the transfer market, but it's worrying that we haven't bagged that marquee or potent striker not just because it's what we expect, but because it's a statement of intent.
DeleteWe've lost one of the top three players in the world and were unable to entice Sanchez losing out to a club which finished two positions below us in the league is not sending out the right messages, especially when one hears that Lavezzi's prefers Juventus to us. I think Rodgers knows this which is why he is said in the last few days that Liverpool is still a club which can entice the top players. We now no longer have the excuse of not being in the Champions League and the minimum aim this season has to be to finish again in the Champions League and reinforce our position as one Europe's top teams.
As for Rossiter, I believe he already has the capability to a job in the first team squad possessing an eye for a pass, stamina in a abundance (at a good pace, something which Lucas lacks) and is strong in the tackle. My problem is that we have to have the option to sure up the midfield should we need to against physically strong opposing midfields and part of our problem last season was not just defending at the back, but in midfield which we obviously sacrificed for our attacking policy and as we don't hav Suarez now we have to adapt.
As for striking options it shouldn't depend on whether Borini goes to Sunderland as one could argue that given the amount of matches we could have this season, four strikers should be par for the course.
We needed as marquee signing early in the piece to draw the other top players to us. Lambert and Lallana can't really do that. Had We got Sanchez, perhaps it would have been different and we'd get the very best on offer. We got away with it last season by having 2 1/2 strikers. Next season will be a different challenge.
DeleteHope you are not including Biffa as the 1/2 striker because he had no effect on any of our play last season except for proving that he was a poor signing!
DeleteSavilla have agreed to buy him at the end of the season.
DeleteNice one! Off he goes from the touch line to landfill.
DeleteEven if they don't pay us, just take him. Problem with players like that is that just block the corridor and prevent others from getting thru!
DeleteAs for strikers this all depends on Borini finally leaving for Sunderland with the loss of Remy through failed medical and the lack of an additional striker so far means that if our main strikers get injured we will put ourselves under serious pressure to keep up with our rivals.
