Liverpool overpowered, outclassed and dismissed by Man City in cruise control

Brendan Rodgers decided on two changes from the side victorious over Southampton with Moreno coming in for Janvier Manquillo and Joe Allen coming in for the lack lustre Lucas Leiva. Glen Johnson moved across to take over the right back position in a Liverpool team looking to prove that there was life without Suarez and that we belong among the elite. It left the question of could we cope with City's power especially in midfield.

City started well in the first few minutes controlling possession with Dzeko getting an early snap shot from a Cliché cross which was easily snaffled by Mignolet. Gerrard then unleashed a glorious pass from halfway finding Sterling in the box, who superbly chested and hooked a spectacular mistimed volley wide.

Moreno showed early signs of his exciting attacking prowess bombing on down the left and causing consternation with an excellent early cross which was sliced clear. Liverpool were now dominant in terms of possession with Sterling looking lively on the right and drifting in, but for all our possession we were struggling to create chances. Liverpool were finally able to manufacture a chance through the individual brilliance of Sturridge. He brilliantly collected a cross on the left of the area and from a standing start left Kompany for dead before shooting powerfully at Hart.

Has Suarez really left?

On the half hour city began to impose themselves on the game with Nasri and moreover Silva stepping up to dictate matters. Even so, City were not creating much, but in possession began to target the Liverpool left side and it was that which paid dividends just before the break as Gerrard failed to track Stevan Jovetic run into the area forcing Lovren to head to Moreno who on his heals failed to detect Jovetic creeping in behind to smash City in front. It was a disappointing end to a half which we'd control for half hour.

City started the second-half the on the ascendency with Yaya Toure beginning to get himself into the game alongside the controlling influence of Fernando adding power to the finesse of their creativity players. It was only a matter of the time before the second goal arrived and when he came it was a stunning. After a period of controlled possession City changed gear slipping the ball through the middle where Jovetic flicked the ball brilliantly on to Samir Nasri surging run. The French International returned the compliment by clipping the ball back in for Jovetic to superbly clip the ball in on the half-volley.

Liverpool needed to hit back and Moreno almost created a chance with a surging run down the left, only just failing to find Henderson when the easier pass would have been to roll the ball across in for Sturridge hovering in the six yard box.

The game was over in explosive fashion with Aguero scoring within 23 seconds of entering the fray (substituting Dzeko). The striker ran onto an inch perfect pass from Navas behind Lovren and coolly slotting home, although Mignolet will be disappointed to be beaten at the near post.

Liverpool managed to get on the score sheet through Sturridge industry regaining the ball and pulling off an excellent cross with the outside of his boot enticing Rickie Lambert to get first goal of his Liverpool career. Unfortunately, he headed straight at Hart with Zabaleta turning in the rebound. Minutes later Lambert had a great chance to score, but chose to square the ball across for Sturridge enabling Kompany to clear.

In a disappointing evening Glen Johnson looks to have picked a thigh injury which will keep him out for some time and we can only hope that Moreno's ankle injury is no more than a small jolt.

Rodgers needs to find a way to get more support to Daniel Sturridge because at times the striker looked isolated having to fashion out chances for himself. He also needs his midfielders to hit their straps in terms of shots on goal and creating clear cut chances.

The defence needs work.  The lack of cohesion particularly on the left side between the centre-halfs was there for all to see and Rodgers and his coaching team will have to earn their stripes before the Spurs game particularly with Javier Manquillo odds on to return after Johnson's injury.  His three defensive buys and Can in midfield were bought to sure up the leaky defensive side of the game, yet we've already let in four goals in two games.

It's disappointing, but this is a Liverpool team in transition and it's how we move on from here with Lallana and Balotelli yet to join in and Markovic, Moreno, Manquillo, Lovren and Can needing time to blend in and adopt the Rodgers philosophy.  Against Spurs we need to find a cutting edge and if we don't even as early as it is questions will begin to be ask.

  1. I’m in the office early so I’ll be the first to chime in on last night. I thought that we were the better side in the first half but then two well taken goals either side of half time really knocked the stuffing out of us, heads went down and when they got their third I really feared that it could be 5 or 6. City were ruthless where we were wasteful and deserved their victory.

Apart from taking a snooze on the first goal I think Moreno had a decent debut especially given how much City targeted that left flank, hopefully his ankle injury isn’t too serious. Lovren ‘the organiser’ needs to do a better job at marshalling the defence and the way that Aguero absolutely skinned him for the third goal was worrying, the boy is not blessed with pace so he needs to get better in his positioning.

Marcovic looked absolute dynamite for about 5 minutes after he came on and then he suddenly turned invisible, Lambo should have taken that shot on at 3-1. Glen Johnson is a waste of space, I understand Rodgers not wanting to start with 3 new faces in defence but Johnson offers absolutely nothing on that right side. Now we need a reaction against Spurs on Sunday to bounce back before the international break, it’ll be a tough game and Pochettino will have them organised but 3 points is vital now, we don’t want to fall away early in the campaign.

  2. I didn’t get to see the game, but a bit surprised by the goal score line, ruthless and clinical form from City, that’s why they are the champions.

We have let in 4 goals in two games, which I think shows that we have more pressing issues regarding defenders and strikers, the defence I hope will get stronger.

Never going to be easy ride, but it’s vital we win our next game, to bring some balance back.

  3. Not easy for a new back four to gel immediately but there's some basics that need to be sorted. If only Don Howe was available for hire! Whilst comfortable on the ball and good in aerial combat, Lovren seem to be trading water in pursuit of Augero. Glen was a waste of space going backwards and forwards, he looked more like the debutant to me.

Hope we've not spent all of our transfer kitty!

Look forward to Ballatelli to help provide a cutting edge in the last third.

  4. No point having possession with no cutting edge in the final third, have to support Sturridge (who looked sharp) once the ball gets up there.

Thought once City put down the pedal the midfield were overrun. Whoever's working/coaching the defence needs to address positional play quickly as it will stop Skrtel having to make these last ditch tackles if he's already in the correct position.

Most alarming to me is that is the same problem remains. In that we dominate the first half and then in the 20 minute period we lose our way specifically in midfield. Where as last season we scored more goals than the opposition to mask the problems, this season we have to start stabilising the midfield and obviously the defensive problems.

In saying that Moreno looked promising on a few surging runs and one excellent piece of defending when he covered on the other side of the defence showing a great deal of pace and perception shows he not all about offence.

    1. Just saw the game third goal shocking 3 touches from man city and back of our net, we need to be a rock at the back. Terrible defending and, we need to wake up!

  5. Was so disappointed with the defeat I have blanked it out for a few days but am now back to agree with the comments above about Johnson being a waste of space, Lovren needing to show more organisation and the midfield needing more power to handle the bigger games.
I need to also add I am not happy with our keeper Mignolet who seems to get away with not being criticised - to let in 3 of the 4 shots on target for me is poor keeping and his position needs to be questioned if he again has an average season where he is not commanding his area and not showing good levels of concentration. Gone are the days of Reina breaking records for clean sheets for us, it was a major gamble to pick Mignolet instead of Reina and it now looks like a costly one for Rodgers.

    1. Now the Cobwebs have been shaken off, we should crack on at Spurs with Super Mario ready as Brendan says…

Now just imagine the pace ….Sterling, Sturridge and Mario

    2. I reackon we’ll go back to the diamond to accommodate Balotelli and give Gerrard more support, really hoping that Moreno’s ankle clears up in time for Sunday. If so I’d like to see this team against Spurs –
      Ming
      Manquillo Skrtel Lovren Moreno
      Gerrard
      Hendo Allen
      Sterling
      Sturridge Balotelli

    3. You mean “SMS” to Spurs

    4. Lots of SMS, that the Spurs would be wondering what network we are on…

Baz, My thoughts are not far from this … but Moreno might be out with Flanno deputising

    5. I think Ming did not cover him self in glory having failed on two counts at Man City. It is like a short on target is a goal!!! Auguero’s goal was saveable if his positioning was right.

    6. it's what you do with the possession and like you said pace. Simple we need goals and winning theses games its what comes behind our front players.

    7. We need a quality defensive midfielder such as Pogba or someone of similar ilk as Lucas has been found wanting.

We also need a quality keeper as Migs is also been extremely poor both last season and so far this season – he is not a dominant, commanding keeper and you can always guarantee a goal with a shot on target against him.

    8. Flanagan's still injured as has been for most of the summer.

Been saying for ages we need at enforcer in midfield, gives us the option of changing things up should we need too. Imagine A N Other and Can in the middle against the City or Chelsea midfields.

    9. We’re apparently looking to take Alex Song on loan for the season with an option to buy next Summer. Would be a good addition I reckon.

    10. Hear hear, we need a bit of physical presence in the midfield …too much talent no grit

    11. Alex song + Can v Chelsea … combustion is the outcome, we need to lay down a marker soon … it just might be poor Spurs again…

  6. Spurs are looking a very different beast this season. Pochettino has them pressing and playing football, Sunday is going to be another tough test for us, I’d take a 0-1 victory. After that we have a decent run of winnable games through to the end of October – Villa, West Ham, Everton, West Brom, QPR, Hull.

    1. Been thinking about that game for a while - should we lose things start to look different in the scheme of things.

We are supposedly closing in on Eder Balanta, Columbian Defender (River Plate). If true, he's a replacement for Agger.

    2. I thought I'd heard that Song was available on a free transfer which if that's the case we should sign him up - though it would probably take much for him to leave his Barcelona penthouse. Funny how we've spent all this money on so many players and we're still short of a number 2 goalkeeper to challenge Migs, a central midfielder enforcer and a 3rd choice striker. Shows what a heck of an achievement last season was with a threadbare squad.

    3. Doesn’t make any sense to keep buying central defenders as Lovren was supposed to be the replacement for Agger !!!

The Ilori saga is another situation that has bazzled me – it does not make sense to buy a player and not utilise him for the good of the club sending him out on loan without ever playing for the club is just plain dumb.

    4. It's a tad strange what's going on. Kristoffer Peterson has a huge reputation, had an excellent pre-season and we sold him yesterday. What's the point of bringing back Suso if he's not even making the bench? Is it that we want to extend his contract (which is in the last year) and then sell him? He's at the point in his career when he should be kicking on not languishing in the reserves or playing the odd game here or there. If Agger is going to leave isn't there enough games for Illori...?

Agree with Jack Robinson being sold as he was not going to cut the mustard at Anfield.

    1. Watched Ludogorets penalty shoot out last night with their centre-half having to go in goal... the boy scored one and pulled off two saves to send them through!

  8. The thing that bothers me about Brendan is that I think his strengths are also his weaknesses in the sense that he always buy attacking players and defensive ones almost as an after though. By that I mean if you look at his transfers you could arguably ask why he doesn't see that should Joe Allen or Steven Gerrard get injured we'd be shorn of an integral part of the squad. Like I said when I read that he told Coutinho he wanted him to develop as a no 8 you know that the Song transfer was unlikely.

Also. I just believe that if we come against a strong midfield sometimes we may need to switch to a four and that could mean without Stevie. Right now if Liverpool played with a four the central two midfielders would have to be out of Can/Henderson/Allen. Brendan and Ayre keep saying that we've bought for the future, but the aim has to be at the minimum that we retain are Champions League position. Look at a club the size of Man United, struggling to buy players. Having to spend £60 mill for a very good player who in the normal scheme of things would probably have cost £15-20 mill cheaper.

At the moment we don't have that enforcer and we are hoping that Jordan Henderson develops into a leader. Just hope we take care of business against Spurs... In Brendan we trust.
