Liverpool add steely resolve to stunning attacking play

Two games in and back to the tried and trusted diamond formation.  Balotelli joined the fray one of three changes to the starting line-up from the team which lost to Manchester City at the Etihad.

Javi Manquillo and Mamadou Sakho came in for the injured Glen Johnson and Martin Skrtel and Coutinho losing out to the battling qualities of Joe Allen would provide in the central areas.  Adam Lallana missed out again deemed not fit enough to make the match day squad.  Emre Can and Lazar Markovic again saw bench patrol.

Brendan Rodgers make-over on his 100th match as Liverpool manager was taken to another level with three of his four defenders having just arrived in this transfer window and Sakho having not secured a regular starting place since his arrival last summer.

Balotelli’s return to the English game almost had a perfect start in the second minute after Sturridge picked him out with sumptuous cross for the Italian striker to head straight at Lloris with the goal at his mercy.   Even so, with one touch Balotelli had shown Liverpool now possessed an aerial threat to go with their pace and subtlety up front.

As in so many games last season Liverpool fast start bore fruit.  Jordan Henderson won the ball on half way before feeding Sturridge on the right.  The forward showed sublime touch and ingenuity to bring the ball under control before finding Henderson again with a lovely weighted pass at the top his run who in turn played a delicious ball for the marauding Sterling tap in on the angle.  The goal said everything about Brendan Rodgers Liverpool.

Liverpool were know in our formidable stride moving up the gears, but unlike against Man City there was a cutting edge to the play with Balotelli offering another outlet to keep the defence busy.  Balotelli found space again from Gerrard’s free-kick heading wide from close range.

Balotelli combined well with his strike partner finding him with a neat back heel which Sturridge curled, with very little back lift, towards the corner of the goal which Lloris caught without trouble.

Balotelli could’ve a claimed a hat-trick in the first-half having. He held the ball up on half-way spun away from the defender before clipping through pass to Sterling which Lloris fly-hacked out straight back to the forward who shanked his long range shot wide.

The only way an outclassed Spurs were going to get back in the game was through a mistake and we almost provided them the opportunities.

First, uncertainty between the centre-halfs allowed Adebayor to gallop through uncontested onto a long ball to lob over and then Sakho losing possession and was saved by Lovren’s superb last ditch tackle to block the disappointing Lamela’s shot.

Concentration levels were still wavering when  Lovren and Sakho challenged for the same ball leaving Chadli to saunter in unmarked before Mignolet saved smartly from his international team mate.

Spurs momentum was halted early in the second-half by Eric Dier tugging back Joe Allen after some fine work again from Sturridge out wide.  Steven Gerrard clinically dispatched the penalty for his first goal of the season.

Any chance of Spurs mounting a comeback was summarily dismissed by the impressive Moreno who whipped the ball away from Townsend, just inside before Liverpool half, before setting off on charging run taking him inside the area before unleashing an angled drive to end the game as a spectacle.

It was no more than Liverpool deserved having looked incisive on almost every attack with Sterling dynamic at every turn and Sturridge as creative as he was threatening.

Liverpool coasted through the final half hour without Spurs posing any questions a part from one sensational piece of skill form Sterling.

Emre Can powered clear before feeding Sterling on the right of the area.  He showed fantastic balance and dancing feet to twinkle in between three Spurs defenders before hesitating with the ball on his left and prodding a tame shot in the grateful arms of Lloris with his right.

Man of the Match:  Raheem Sterling quite simply different class.  Provided the edge to Liverpool’s game with his incisive running and his ability to link the midfield to the forward line.  He is adding a goal threat to his game as well as being able to see a pass.

Critical eye:  Balotelli was excellent proving that he can put in a shift when required.  Held the ball up well and linked up well with Sturridge providing an aerial threat up front and in defence.  Sturridge showed sublime touches and intricate passing which led to two of the goals.

Moreno exhibited great mental strength to come back from his mistake against City, defending well and was explosive with his forays up field one of which ended with his stunning strike.

Moreno was steady and Lovren showed excellent leadership at the back, but requires time with either Sakho or Skrtel to build a string relationship over time.  Sakho started nervously, but improved after some rash defending.

Rodgers showed he learnt a from last season in bringing on Can and Markovic for Allen and Balotelli to shut down the game as soon as Liverpool went three-up.

He equalled the great Bill Shankly’s record of 56 victories in his first 100 games.

    2. We were very good yesterday, controlled the game well from the back despite the odd bout of dodgy defending from both Sakho and Lovren, I suppose they will need some more playing time together to build up an understanding. Moreno was class all game and his goal was an absolute peach, it’s early days but that looks like 12 million well spent.

Balotelli had a solid debut exhibiting some nice touches and approach play. Raheem Sterling was once again the star of the show, he’s fast becoming our most important player and I really hope we do everything we can to tie him down to a new contract.

As far as any new business today is concerned I expect us to bring in a back up keeper with Victor Valdes being hotly tipped, outgoings I expect will be from Lucas, Coates, Borini, Suso and Assaidi if we can convince them to move on.

    4. No appear to say anything about Remy factor. Why did LFC fix a u turn and Chelsea push on with the deal?

    5. Good performance yesterday. - job well done. Balo and the other two musketeers were too hot to handle.

Hope we can get a back up keeper and make sure the exit door is wide enough to let the dead wood go. If we're not going to get another striker in, rather than have Borini go out on loan, I'd suggest that it might be useful to keep him for the milk cup squad. Sounds bad, but it would be good if our medical team are proved right over the Remi deal. Hope our midfield can sustain the workload of the season given that we're unlikely to add.

Usually on transfer deadline day, we'd have received no less than 25 emails from the anxious David by now.

Just want to add that Daniel Agger gave a very gracious farewell moving back to his initial club. Said he had many offers over the years but chose to remain at his beloved club. Also remarked that he was unable to keep up with the strenuous demands of the Premiership - YNWA.

    8. David is quiet not for lack of words, just that he is slightly happy LFC did business in advance and do not believe in last minute.com. On the down side, he is very much not happy with Mr Ming at the moment, as he believed that every shot on target is a goal against LFC. However, yesterday Ming did keep one out.

    9. He kept two out, both of which he could have caught.

    10. Now hearing the figure is closer to £13m for Borini to QPR.

    11. At least we got back our outlay … now for Lucas and Joe allen

    12. Lucas, possibly Joe Allen will likely be there.

    13. Joe Allen seems to be struggling … I would be inclined to give Adam LLalana a run out.

      Delete
    14. Why do you say Jo is struggling, is it because of him throwing himself Suarez style on the floor? Or because Lamella gave him the elbow.

    15. Dave,

Just got home and switched on… low and behold at 22:10 Borini is still a Liverpool player. 50 minutes to go… Anymore reporting like that and you’ll be on the recorded highlights of the BBC rather than primetime on Sky… :-)

    16. I think that Joe Allen has been one of our best players so far this season, He’s pressed really well, been tidy in possession and linked up well with the attack and defence, I must be watching a different player.

    17. The chump decided to ask for ridiculous wages which he knew that QPR would not agree to – to force a stay at Liverpool – I am really fuming about this one!!!

    18. Calm down dude, he’ll sit on the bench til Christmas then he’ll be off. You never know a couple of Injuries and we might even be glad he hung around.

    19. Do not crucify him let him be. It might turn out to be a blessing in disguise, he may score pen against Chelsea, Man U or Man City. Since he forced him self on Liverpool we may be watching him on LFC Live for the Reserve or under 21.

    20. Honestly not that bothered he is still at the club, put him and Lambert in for the Capital One games, just may see a couple of fired up forwards.

Trying to fathom out why Lucas is still here!?! Something tells me a may just me needed in the long run. What the transfer market is now showing anyone who is earning upwards of £50k is hard to get off the payroll.

    21. I think Lucas could still be a good squad player for when Stevie needs a rest. When Lucas plays with Gerrard the two of them slow the team down and are essentially getting in each others way doing the same job but I think as an occasional replacement for Gerrard with two of Henderson, Allen, Can or Lallana providing the energy in front of him he could actually still be useful in that deep lying role.

    22. Not the for me. Unless he recaptures some of the vitality in his play then I'd rather he wasn't on the paddock. Get's caught on the ball now. Before the injuries he has the endurance levels for two now he seems to shuffle round the pitch...

      Delete
    23. I won't forget watching him live last season - Lucas seems to be a well spent force. he's finished! Hope I'm wrong. Might be able to give Stevie a rest if we're 3-0 up with less than 12 minutes to go (like the Palace game).

    24. Last season he was often being asked to play further up the field or out on the right of the diamond which obviously isn’t his best position, like I said if he goes back in front of the defence where he can rely more on his sense of positioning and has others in front of him doing the leg work then I think he can still have the odd decent game.

      Delete
    25. He was in front of the back four in the second half against Palace and wasn't up to it. A couple of times I almost let out an expletive amongst the Palace fans... would've blown mine and Karl's anonymity! Also, the lack of tracking back against Southampton when he seemed to give up as if he was expecting a transfer to Napoli was criminal!

      Delete
    26. I couldn't believe what I saw at Palace. I've still got the game on Skyplus but haven't watched it yet!

    27. With two front men again we can't afford to carry passengers!

  3. Comeback after the city defeat, what a vital result we needed and got it. We looked strong, and I think we can only and get better. Would have liked to see Mario play the whole game, but no point risky players if we had the game in the bag.

We look now more dimensional, than having LS doing everything upfront.
I thought Henderson was just brilliant, and Sterling was immense too. A bit rusty Ballotelii, need a few more games and match fitness, need to be more clinical, he will get better the more he plays. What I liked about him was he was calm and celebrated the goals with his team mates which was a good sign.

Still think we lack leadership at the back which will cost us goals. Sakho and Lovren going for the same ball, and not one of them covering the back, lack of communication, no talking.

    Otherwise, very good all round.

  4. If You Can't Beat 'Em, Join 'Em
Said Alex Ferguson in May 2012: "We invest in young players. That is what we are good at - we're not like other clubs who can spend fortunes on proven goods. We know that Manchester City are going to pay stupid money, pay silly salaries and all that. We can't do anything about it."
