Will Liverpool live to regret pulling the plug after striker's failed medical

In the overall scheme of things we may lose 20 goals with the loss of Luis Suarez, but if we can tightened up defensively in the midfield and more importantly at the back, ultimately it make us not just harder to beat, but able to close out games rather than going hell for leather for 90 minutes as against Stoke (3-5) and Man City (3-2) because we didn’t have the wherewithal to shut up shop.

The transfer of Emre Can has given the midfield the sturdy athletic ball player  we’ve been looking for, but  another robust midfielder would certainly not go amidst to compete with the Man City’s and Chelsea’s of this world who have improved the depth and certainly the physical nature of their midfield’s.

In saying that, Suarez moving on presents Rodgers with the chance of making Daniel Rodgers his premier striker by playing him as a lone striker and adopting an extra man in the midfield, thus making Coutinho the pivotal component in the team in behind the England striker.

Suarez will be missed, but there are positives in the sense that Rodgers has players who are improving year on year and can thrive with the extra responsibility.

Sturridge improvement has been exponentially of prodigious proportions, but just as impressive has been the rise of Coutinho, Sterling and to a lesser extent Flanagan.  I say to a lesser Flanagan where the Liverpool native is concerned only because because his explosion on the scene was in his first real season and one always wants to see whether youngsters can push on again over a second season or like many his form tapers off before pushing again.

Rodgers commented recently that Coutinho was now 'brain of Liverpool's team'.  While the comment may have be designed as a shot in the arm for the little Brazilian, there is no doubt that this is an extremely important season for him in taking on the mantle of one of the team’s leaders and with the Brazilian teams total failure at the World Cup and one of its few pure footballing talents he now has the the footballing world at his feet for club and country.  Sterling will almost certainly share the burden interchanging from out wide to in behind Sturridge and looks assured in either position for club and country.

Twenty four hours day ago we looked odds on to tie up the bargain of the season with Loic Remy, who suited the Brendan Rodgers philosophy of being able to play in more than one position and blessed with pace.  The non-transfer smacks of a decision taken by committee and is one which Liverpool could live to regret.  The player’s heart problem is a long standing one well known in the game having been revealed by Marseille during his 2010 transfer to them from Nice, so if he has failed over that complaint then I feel that it’s shoddy work by Rodgers and the transfer committee.

Although, the Lallana injury (out for 6 weeks with a knee injury) is disappointing, we have plenty of midfielders to cope in absence, but there are very few players with Remy’s attributes, let alone available strikers to fill the void.  If we look to Romelu Lukaku, a different type of striker, given the trouble we are having signing Ryan Bertrand which smacks of desperation I hasten to add, Chelsea are unlikely to sell, still bearing a grudge after what they perceive as our shoddy handling of Victor Moses.

Which leaves Wilfried Bony as the only available striker on Liverpool’s radar.

One hopes that Liverpool do not reaction rashly, buying a front man who doesn’t fit into the team ethos and lacks the class to help us compete for the Premier and Champions Leagues respectively.

  1. So, how do you’s all feel about the Remy deal collapsing? I have to say I was starting to feel like he was the right signing and I’m a little bit gutted that it hasn’t come off.

    1. He's what we needed in terms of a goal scorer and flexible forward. Watching Sturridge lead the line last night, he looks as if he could do with some help.

    2. Didn’t watch the match last night but I’ve read quotes from Rodgers saying that Dan Sturridge is “ready to assume the mantle”. If we do now go ahead and bring in another Striker it sounds like he will be playing second fiddle.

    3. I think the deal would have been a good one, but Liverpool pulled out related to a problem with his medical, may be it was too risky. Lallana could miss the start of the new season after injuring a knee in training, hopfully no more than one or two games. We need every one to be fresh and ready to go.

    4. I think uncle Rikie will turn up.

I still feel we could have taken that risk!!

    5. I must admit, I was a bit sceptical about the deal in the first place, because why would arsenal pass on him and QPR needing to stay in the premiership allow a 14 goal striker to go…

Remy deal collapsed to due to his dodgy knees – his cruciate can’t take the strain of week in week out punishment of our busy schedule and with LLalana out on the same problem, it is not financially wise to have two players with the same problem early in the season.

So I would not consent to such a deal.

    6. Tad gutted myself, quite simply because we put ourselves in this position. When he joined Marseille from Nice about four years ago, that was when the problem with his heart first showed itself and was well known. Could have had the medical, like Lovren's over here.

Why not negoatiate a pay as you play or different type of transfer. Feel gutted for the player as no insurance compnay is going to be a bit of a problem going forward and as I understand that he is a big part of the problem. I note QPR are still hoping to work something out.

Too be completely fair to LFC, given what happened to Fabrice Muamba no team if they can help It wants that to happen to one of their players and if the player already has a problem...

    7. Yeah absolutely, it’s probably the right thing to do from the clubs point of view, so it’s back to the drawing board. Hopefully we have somebody a bit more exciting that Huntelaar on the list.

    8. What is the situation with this guy – Bony? It could fill the gap some how.

    9. Yeah gutted too, think he would of been a great signing, ready made back-up/alternative to sturridge and also option to play on the flanks. Have a mate who is a geordie season ticket holder and he was convinced remy is good enough for top four (although he also thought carrol would do well for us!!). really not sure who I want us to go for now, bit of talk about lacazette from lyon, looks like a player but would probably take a bit of time to settle in and that was one of the great things about remy. Can see remy going to everton or somebody now and tearing it up....

    10. I heard that LFC enquired with Bony’s people and they were lead to believe that it would be difficult to get the deal done so they went for Remy instead given QPR’s willingness to sell. It might be possible that we resurrect interest in Bony but expect Swansea to be very awkward.

    11. Listening to Brendan it seems he is happy to wait until January, if so that brings Borini back into the equation and ultimately leaves us a bit short in the striking department in terms of numbers and praying that Sturridge shows a bit more reslience re injuries. Bony seems the only viable option as Chelsea are not about to sell Lakaku to us given the way they are behaving over Bertrand.

Striking wise there is just not that much out there and I'd be loathed for us to buy a striker just for the sake of buying someone. As I've said previously, I'd rather go out and buy a world-class powerhouse centre-midfield moving the dynamic elsewhere i.e. losing twenty goals upfront and making sure we let in 20 less goals is something I could live with.

      Delete
    12. Nah, sod that I want goals, goals, goals again this season. I’ll be absolutely flabbergasted if we don’t sign another striker before the window shuts. Harry Redknapp has of course been flapping his lips to the media today and says that he doesn’t believe that Remy could have failed his medical and suspects that LFC have used that as an excuse because they have simply went off the transfer or have identified another preferred target.

      Delete
    13. If we can find the right striker I'd be only to happy, but I don't want to go through another season watching us letting in some of the most ridiculous and pathetic goals.

Seems they've changed their stance. Last night QPR were briefing that the transfer had broken down because we couldn't rid ourselves of Borini!

      Delete
    14. The Collapsed deal has nothing to do with Borini.

Borini is still going as Brendan has suggested that his injury is just bruising.

I have an inkling that Raheem Sterling is the new Suarez with Jordan Ibe set to burst onto the scene…watch this space.

      Delete
    15. I highly doubt that LFC would be so underhand and irresponsible as to cast aspersions over a players fitness if there wasn’t serious grounds for them to do so.

      Delete
    16. I think Sturridge will be the main man regardless as we struggle to replace Suarez. He probably needs to stay a bit further up top rather than dropping too deep. I don't really have Borini will no doubt be happy that Remy failed his medical.

      Delete
    17. I agree with Barry… I can see Liverpool descend so low.

      Delete
    18. Well Harry should be happy to keep Remy. Can't believe Borini turned down the £14m move. So who will be leaving us then? as suggested, Kelly? Lucas happy to settle for being a bit part player? Coates? Jack Robinson good enough?

We apparently didn't give a reason for the deal collapsing.

      Delete
    19. Brendan Rodgers in his press conference last night said that the deal was off due to “a problem that had happened before”. The player has failed medicals before so the inference was that it was a problem with the medical. The player had already agreed personal terms and had even picked out a squad number so I doubt that finance was the issue, what else could it be apart from the medical?

      Delete
    20. Surprised at the level of disappointment of the Remy deal collapsing, a decent player at his best but too inconsistent to provide a substantial improvement on the attacking options already at the club, if he came would he have been anything but another bit part player? The main reason we seemed interested in him was the price.

      Delete
    21. No matter which way, I was wondering why we hadn't told Borini there was no future for him before now!?!

whether we did or we didn't we flew Remi out there and then appeared to deliver the news sneakily. Just didn't look great as a fan.

      Delete
    22. Vic - I can’t see any problem with the way things have gone at all, guy flies out for a medical things don’t work out and the club announces that the deal is off. How else was it meant to be handled?

Some have said that we shouldn’t have flown him out to America but the player was expected to sign and join the tour. Lovren only got his medical in Liverpool because the Boston training camp had ended and the team was moving around a lot, he’ll now fly out and finish the tour with the rest of the squad. I don’t think that the club could have handled it any different.

      Delete
    23. I hear you Baz. I've probably become very cynical over the years and I can sniff a leak a mile off - Liverpool have said nothing yet the reason still gets out. Better to just come and say the reason in a press conference.

This happened 40 years ago with Asa Hartford potentially moving to Leeds and the move broke down because he had a whole in his heart. Was said there and then. Didn't stop him going on to have a very good career for Man City.

      Delete
    24. Agreed Baz, not having gone through the trouble of flying him to USA for medical.

Livi, On the balance of probability none of the above. Kelly did well when he came the other night.

      Delete
    25. Kelly looked quite strong and seemed to have a point to prove, but I don't think we're short of right backs. Even Kolo and Coates got a run outs too. Some of these players are probably being put on parade for future sale.

  2. Interesting comment by Steve Nicol:

Liverpool can forget about finishing in the top four if they fail to sign another striker, according to the club's former defender Steve Nicol.
The much-publicised collapse of Loic Remy's move to Anfield has posed a dilemma for manager Brendan Rodgers.

"You can't expect Daniel Sturridge to do it all on his own, says Nicol, 52. "Without another striker though, in case he gets injured, they are up the creek without a paddle.

"There isn't another striker currently at the club that is going to take them into the top four, never mind challenge for the Premier League title. Liverpool are in trouble. They have to find somebody and I'm not sure where they're going to find them."

    1. Also, on the back of that Swansea’s chairman has said today that Bony is available at the right price (whatever that is?) and Marco Reus has refused a contract extension which means that should Dortmond choose to keep him beyond this forthcoming season he will be available at £27 million rather than the £45 million he’s available at now.

      Delete
    2. I am not sure I buy his idea. Yes, LS was very valuable for us last season but the achievement of last season was all not about him. There were few matches he did not score nor assist. In a very plain language, it is no use building the club future on LS departing stop. After all the first 5 games he did play last season we only lost narrowly to Man City and Chelsea.

Trust me we will be fine.

      Delete
    3. I think he’s commenting more about relying on Sturridge with no direct replacement as such. I don’t think Rickie was bought with that in mind and we’d have to hope that DS bucks the trend and stays fit for the whole season. Having another striker with a record of banging in goals presents us with other options.

Edet, I hear what you’ve said previously about Raheem, but others need to step up and fill the breach re goals post Suarez, especially if he plays the 4-1-2-3 formation which he says he’s potentially looking at starting with. Lightning pace up front with Sterling and Markovic either side of Sturridge with Can and Henderson in front of Gerrard.

  3. light read:

Luis Suarez departure will be huge for Liverpool:

With the controversial World Cup star Luis Suarez leaving Anfield for the Camp Nou, the Merseyside club will now be looking to replace their star man.

Last season Suarez hit 31 goals in an impressive 33 games and almost enabled Liverpool to claim their first Premier League trophy; it makes sense to claim that the free scoring striker is irreplaceable.

    Can he be replaced?

During this summer's transfer window Brendan Rodgers has already bought two strikers in Rickie Lambert and Divok Origi but these two players simply cannot repeat the type of class and skill Suarez brought to the club.

It's debatable that after the biting incident at the World Cup Suarez is too much of a risk as he has missed over 16 matches due to bans, but nevertheless his pure talent is shown so frequently that he is up their with the best players in the world.

    Liverpool's test
But for Liverpool the coming season really is a test with regards to what they can do without being dependant on Suarez.

It looked at one point that Liverpool were going to sign Loic Remy for a reasonable £8.5million but that deal fell through due to a failed medical, according to reports.

With just over a month left of the transfer window the Reds will have to move quickly and assure themselves the capture of a top class striker. The only reassuring thing is that the money that Liverpool received from the Suarez deal is able to fund that of a world class striker.

    1. And on the back of that Gus Poyet has just announced that he has been back in talks with Liverpool and Borini.

Baz, not a chance of Chelsea selling to us even if we wanted him.

      Delete
    2. Alas mate you are probably spot on there, we need to get our second striker issue sort out pronto though. The longer it drags on the more desperate we’ll become and the selling clubs will hold us to ransom. It was interesting to hear that the Swansea chairman has come out and said that Bony could be for sale. I reckon we’ll be going back in there.

I know that people have been mentioning Lacazette but he’d cost £20 million and is untested outside of France. Ezequiel Lavezzi has also been linked, which is exciting on the face of it, but he’s nearly 30 and would cost £18 mil not to mention hefty wages so I doubt FSG would be too keen.

I’ll be delighted if we get rid of Fabio for £14 mil. The guy can’t play as a lead striker and we have much better wide options, heck even the likes of Ibe, Suso and Texteira will be ahead of him from wide attacking positions, so the guy doesn’t have a role to play even as a squad player. I’ve nothing against the guy but if he wants to play football it’s time to part ways.

      Delete
    3. Well if Borini leaves there is no way (agreeing with Stevie Nicol) we should be going into the season with two strikers. And as regards Bony, I don’t think Swansea will respond to a £20 million bid the way their chairman is reacting to our initial perceived tapping up and knowing as you say our desperation.

I agree he’d better get a move on whether he wants Bony, Reus or whomever. Quite surprising that he hasn’t got a young striker coming through as he has in the midfield and defensive areas.

  8. Back to Loic Remy see article below:

Liverpool Transfers: Three Reasons Why The Failed Medical Is A Blessing In Disguise For The Reds
By Dyutiman Banerjee on July 31, 2014

They say everything happens for a reason. Apparently the worst things in life can also have some good effects and in the longer run the person with whom disaster happens thanks his fortune because it happened. French striker Loic Remy failing the medical can have the same effect on the Liverpool management down the line.

What is seeming a catastrophe at the moment can turn out to be a blessing in disguise for the club. After Luis Suarez left Liverpool for Barcelona in the summer, the management have been looking at options from different sources and the club was poised to sign Remy from QPR until he failed the medical. But we feel that as much as the management feels it as a glitch, in the end it will be a positive thing and we give three reasons as to why we feel that.

    Surplus requirement
Liverpool wanted to invest the Suarez money in their squad and build a team for the future. They wanted to have players who would be able to take the workload of the Premier League as well as the Champions League. And instead of a like to like replacement for the Uruguayan they went for the experience for Rickie Lambert, the youthfulness and raw talent of Divock Origi and the wing wizard Lazar Marković.

While it is yet to be cleared as to who will start alongside Sturridge next season, having Remy would have been surplus to the backup needs. As good a player Remy is, he is not first team material at a club like Liverpool and he is too good to sit on the bench waiting for his chances. Hence the problem.

    The marquee signing
Luis Suarez has left the club amid all the efforts of Liverpool and there is a big hole in the team right now. He was the heart and soul of the club and the creator of innumerable goals. Loic Remy is definitely not the answer to that. What Liverpool should really do is to have a big name player to calm the supporters down and also maintain the overall strength of the team. The ideal player would be someone like Marco Reus and there was a sense that if Remy would have joined the club, then he would have been projected as that marquee player, which he clearly is not. Perhaps the failed medical can do the trick now and the management will soon look to sign a true replacement of Suarez.

    The wage burden
Loic Remy was supposed to join Newcastle when he first arrived in England, but he chose to be a QPR player for an astronomical wage supposedly in the region of £75,000. It is true that there were talks about his wage cut on joining Liverpool, but still it cannot be guaranteed that the wage cut would have been that much to really make a difference. It would have been difficult for the club to meet his demands and not start a war in the team. Remy’s failed medical has saved Liverpool of that embarrassment and tons of money.

    1. Well I always belive things happen for a good reason and this is one of them.... He was not to be a blessing in disguise as they say. If we are still looking for a striker he has got to cabable at least to bang 25 goals a season....

      Delete
    2. Mate, it’s one of the most ridiculous articles I’ve read in a long time. Fact of the matter is that we desperately need back up for Sturridge this season so he wouldn’t have been surplus to requirements (Origi doesn’t show up until next Summer). Remy was never ever touted as a direct replacement for Suarez and any decent striker with any sort of profile is always going to ask for about 60 or 70 thousand per week plus Remy’s relatively small transfer fee would have amply compensated for having to give him a few grand a week extra. I’m all for us not signing a Striker who failed his medical but the reasons to be cheerful as outlined in the article are simply utter, utter nonsense.

      Delete
    3. More like a little child hiding the chocolate behind his/her back and telling the mummy it is not me. If we paid £9m or so for Iagos Aspsa who did not score one single goal for a whole season, come on we could have taken the risk with a proven goal getter and use him sparingly notwithstanding his fat wage.

I can just see Remy scoring against us playing for Newcastle or QPR. Sorry I do not really but into this big name signing thing. I do not think LS was such a big hit when we got him seeing that we were not in CL.

    1. No problem with it either, to me he’s a no.2 left-back. Not heard Aston Villa knocking down the door to get him back and Chelsea put a right-back in that position last season which says all we need to know.

Well at least we won’t waste time trying to get Chelsea players in the future. Chelsea have being throwing out this misnomer that Liverpool treated Victor Moses badly in not giving him enough game time and for that reason they would send/sell any more players to us.

Back in January BR suggested that the player’s attitude in training wasn’t all it should be and that’s why he wasn’t in the team and at the World Cup the Nigerian coach said the same thing which suggest that Chelsea’s claim was a smokescreen. Tend to believe that suddenly they saw us as a threat, especially as it’s well known that Mourinho felt Chelsea should’ve have either kept Sturridge or sold him for more dosh. They had no problem selling Mata to a struggling Man U… would he have gone there had Man U had been in the top three at the time?
