Sorcerer Suarez back scoring again Southampton 0 Liverpool 3

Written by dedlfc

This was the game which was the litmus test on our title and top four credentials, a win away to Southampton lets everyone around us know we are not going anywhere and are fighting for our place, but a loss shows that we are more of a side scraping for fourth place instead without the fight to get more.

In an extremely high paced start both sides looked to impose their wills with pretty one touch triangles early on.

The first major chance falls to us when Sturridge races clear of Lovren down the right, and makes it into the box. He’s within his rights to shoot, but opts to square it for Suarez instead. Suarez would have an empty net to sidefoot into had the ball reached him, keeper Boruc having raced out to meet Sturridge, but the low pass is poked out of play by Saints defender Fonte, sliding in brilliantly for an early corner.

Several minutes later a very hefty shoulder charge challenge by Flanagan on Lalana in our own area which on another day could have resulted in a penalty being given away but luckily for us we got away with it.

We seemed to struggle to handle the roaming role of Lalana who seemed to have a serious impact on the game especially in the first half.

Totally against the run of play we took an unexpected lead, It’s Suarez’s 100th appearance in the league for us and he’s celebrated it by ending his goal drought with his 24th league goal this season and his 62nd league goal for us. A pair of heavy touches by Lallana and Lovren on the edge of the Saints area, with Sturridge causing bother. The ball breaks to the lurking Suarez, who passes the ball first time into the bottom right from 12 yards out for 1-0.

It was the first costly mistake by Lalana of the day as he had been the best player on the pitch until then.

We then looked to double our lead with Suarez just hitting over a free kick after winning the set piece opportunity himself.

For the remainder of the first half we rarely strung any passes together with the Saints totally dominating us with our team desperately hanging onto our lead, with very good chances falling to Lambert, Lalana hitting the post and Rodriguez respectively.

With a sigh of relief we got to halftime versus our bogey team still 1-0 up even though we had only had 30% of the possession. Things had to improve in the second half as the way it was heading it was only a matter of time before we would concede a goal.

Coutinho had been anonymous throughout the first half and needs to help the team get better possession in his role as a central threat from midfield.

With Southampton continuing to control the game in the second half Rodgers makes an inspirational substitution with Sterling (unluckily left out of the team) coming on for the ineffective Coutinho.

And with his first touch, Sterling puts a bit of daylight between the two teams. A ball rolled down the inside-right channel for Suarez, who spins and leaves a flat-footed Lovren behind. He zips into the box and whips a low pass into the centre, where Sterling - who has been on the field for 80 seconds - sidefoots into the bottom right for 2-0.

This was a massive moment in the game and was celebrated by Sterling like a player who knew what a brilliant impact he had made on the game.

Our confidence now resumed we preceded to dominate the majority of the second half with us missing several chances (through Sturridge - rounding  the keeper and hitting wide with his right foot,  Suarez direct from a corner , Henderson hitting over from ten yards and Gerrard, with a daisy cutter from long range respectively) to finally put the game to bed.

The game was finally put to bed in stoppage time when Suarez totally bamboozled the last Saints defender Fonte to be tripped up. Our captain marvel Steven Gerrard slams home his 6th league penalty goal and 8th league goal of the season.

Fantastic result for us and with Arsenal losing away at Stoke pushes us up to 2nd place in the league with a superior 14+ goal difference.

Man of the match - Luis Suarez

The return to the goal scoring charts of El Pistelero was a welcome boost with Sturridge not scoring for the first time in 8 league games, his all round play was again fantastic and he continues to cause havoc against every team he faces

Positives
Despite being under the cosh for the vast majority of the match our defence held firm with Mignolet and co claiming our first clean sheet since beating Everton 4-0 six league games ago.

We are slowly and surely starting to get close to something massive for the whole club, only four points off Chelsea, in second place and with Chelsea still to come to our ground, we just need to continue winning our league games and hoping for the Chelsea slip up.

Critical eye
Glen Johnson continues to look out of sorts and gave the ball away a lot of times when not under immense pressure.

Coutinho needs to perform away from home or he will only be picked for home games as his level of performance was very much under par.

  1. A great victory on Saturday but I don't think that Allen played that great?

    1. Absolutely delighted with the win at the weekend – did not expect that victory but it has really pushed us further in our title ambitions, we have had a brilliant season in general and to cap it all we need to secure a top 4 spot as quickly as we can and then aim to finish as high as we can.

Saints hoodoo over bring on Utd !!!! We go there with very high confidence.

    2. The point about Glen begs the question when is our left back back. I understand that he went to the US recently to see a specialist.

    3. I doubt he will play again this season – we have 10 games left – it will take him 3 or 4 games to get upto speed and he is not due to play versus Utd so that takes it down to 9 games left !!!

Can we afford risking him and making his injury worse for next season???

    4. I think BR had a great game too – seems that he had worked hard on the technical aspects of Southampton’s style of play to good effect. The Coutinho will always be a difficult choice because at his best he’s a genius but he flitters in and out of games. We were getting hammered in the first half – mainly through the creativity of Lulana. Maybe if we get Champions League football we will be able to bid for players like this to come and ply their trade with us.

Not sure whats going on with Glen – he may still be injured but he certainly looked out of sorts. We get the best out of Glen when he plays right back so because we didn’t buy a leftie, then I guess he’ll play there. I think he is out of contract at the end of the season.

    5. If and when we qualify for the Champions League I expect a player such as Micah Richards to be brought in as further competition for Glen Johnson’s spot at right back if Glen stays.

Just can’t hide my delight at that fantastic win away to Southampton !!!

    6. The unselfish play by the forward line is worthy of celebration....

    7. Fair play to Mignolet, he was much better at St Mary’s, he even came off his line for a few crosses and that save from Rodriguez was an absolute worldy. Keep it up young Simon.

    9. I genuinely think Shaw is gonna cost £20m, but would be worth it over the next 10-15 years – remember he is only 18 and already one of the top three left backs in the Premiership.

    10. Lallana and Shaw would both cost the earth, I think we’d get better value looking abroad and we all know that FSG have been stung paying premiums on English talent before. As for Richards he’s got talent but the guy has a bad, bad attitude, I’d steer clear.

      Delete
    11. Lalana is a good player but I believe that Suso and Coutinho both have massive futures at the club and would be undermined if a similar player was brought in.

    12. Chelsea are interested so add another 10 million. £25 - £30 mil easy. The lad is the real deal and like you say he’ll hold down the Left back position at a top club for the next 10 years at least.

    13. I think you’re right to add some caution if concerned about costs although we must have saved some dosh by not spending that much in the last two windows.

If we want to compete for the Premiership in future seasons and in the Champions league, we need to have a squad with depth and it will mean that some players will not play more than 30 games in a season.

      Delete
    14. That contradicts your earlier statement on Richards as having him as an additional option at right back constitutes depth and Kelly, Flanagan and Richards are all versatile to provide cover for several positions.

      Delete
    15. It doesn’t really contradict my previous statement – at least not in my mind anyway. We know that we can’t have a squad of 50 players. We know we need more options in midfield – that constitutes four positions. But at right back, putting aside the cover at left back etc. Do we need four high quality right backs?

    16. Great result against Southampton. Stylish and I love the way Gerrard scored right at the end. We are riding high mate!

  2. Baz, don’t understand the bad attitude comment – he just needs to find the right club and get away from the Manchester club scene and focus on his game as he is potentially a fantastic player when he has his football head on.

    1. I say he’s got a bad attitude because it’s well documented that he’s lazy, insubordinate and generally thinks that he’s the proper big ‘un. And again for the money you’d pay you’d be better off casting your net farther than a surly git who’s been bench warming in Manchester for the last 3 seasons. Damien Comolli would probably throw £20 million at him though J

    2. Same could have been said for Sturridge before he joined us but given the chance he has proved that all it takes is for the player to be managed properly and you will get the best out of him.

  3. Can you imagine sitting alongside a son who wanted Southampton to beat us so that Everton can catch up. I need a draw in the game Chelsea vs Spurs come this week Saturday. We do not have any game this weekend, I hope that will help us to prepare properly for Man U game in a forthnight. Long may this winning habit continue. One Chelsea fan predicted that Southampton will be beat 3:0. After the match I phoned to thank him and let him know that I am looking forward to his prediction for the match.

Now who got the liver to predict how many points Liverpool will gain out of 30 remaining?

    1. The club, currently just four points off top spot in the Barclays Premier League, also revealed external debt decreased by 29 per cent to £45.1m.

The increase in revenue continues a steady upward trend since Fenway Sports Group took over the club in October 2010 while, during the same period, external debt has fallen by almost £200m.

In a statement on the club's official website, managing director Ian Ayre said: "These results demonstrate the financial health of the club continues to make good progress as we continue our journey to transform the club on and off the pitch.

"Over the past four or five years, revenue has been consistently increasing from around £170million in 2009 to over £200m today, and external debt has decreased significantly to less than £50m.

"With a hugely supportive ownership group, we have taken a measured approach to bring back financial stability to this great club by ensuring it is properly structured on and off the pitch.

"During the period, we signed six new players including Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho and Joe Allen, and we extended seven players' contracts which included Daniel Agger, Martin Skrtel, Martin Kelly, Lucas Leiva and Raheem Sterling.

"We have added depth and strength to the squad while continuing to develop young talent. In addition, nine players were transferred out and eight players were loaned out.

"These financial results are now up to 18 months old and we have continued to make further progress since this reporting period.

"Our strong links remain with our existing partners, signing new deals with Standard Chartered, Garuda and Carlsberg, and we have recently announced five new partnerships which endorses the global appeal of the LFC brand.

"We continue to invest in our digital and TV platforms and recently announced nine new television partnerships, allowing millions of fans across the world to watch Liverpool games and receive exclusive content.

"We have also seen good progress being made regarding a proposed stadium expansion at Anfield. Any final decision continues to be based on certainty; however, since the partnership was established between Liverpool City Council, Your Housing Group and LFC only 16 months ago, we regard the progress as extremely positive.

"Given where Liverpool Football Club was only a few years ago, the progress that has been made since FSG acquired the club has brought back much-needed stability with an ambitious vision which everyone is focused on.

"I'd like to thank everyone involved in running the club - our owners, fans, partners, players and staff - for all the hard work and dedication."

    2. Just steaming through a few emails having just returned from my break.

Baz, The pad publicity re Micah Richards was a while back and I tend to think that Zableta has made that position his own. My disappointment with Micah Richards is that like a lot of English players they don't seem to realise that just there to tick of City's quota of English players and also he seems to pick up more than his fare share of injuries.

Jack Rodwell should be vying for a World Cup place, yet he can't even usurp Demechelis when he plays in midfield.

The recent accounts say a lot. Answers the question as to why so many players who we could use are out on loan - Connor Coady by all accounts is doing pretty well at Sheffield United and given our shortage of midfield players I was surpised that we didn't call him back when his loan period ran a few weeks ago, instead we gave him a further 6 months - knowing the way Brendan works, be surprised to see him return. As for Fair Play if they do pull us up we may be able to side step any issues simply because we didn't qualify for Europe.

One big rumour. Suso knocked back a contract extension in January because he thinks he won't get enough playing time next season and could be on his way to Sevilla.

  5. Also saw the piece below...

Mkhitaryan opted to sign for Borussia Dortmund, saying: "Liverpool have a great past, but Borussia Dortmund has a great present."

But the Reds have surprised a lot of people this season, giving them a realistic chance to claim the Premier League while Dortmund are 20 points behind Bayern.
The 25-year-old, who has set up seven and scored nine so far this term, says he is happy in Germany but refused to rule out a switch to Liverpool.
Mkhitaryan said: "Of course I know how much Liverpool wanted me, but what happened, happened.
"I'm now in Dortmund and very happy and proud about it.
"Can I see myself at Liverpool in the future? You know that it doesn't depend entirely on me. But this is life and everything is possible."

    1. A bigger stadium would help but ............

      Stadium

One thing that will be at the forefront of the minds of the owners is the cost of stadium redevelopment. It is likely that the club will need a loan in the region of £100-150m as a bank loan to fund redevelopment. Before the club takes on that commitment, they will want a clean balance sheet so that the debt doesn’t act as a barrier to progress on the pitch.

    2. I think it’s the fact that he wants to be a good role model and father to his kids. When they grow up they will want to hear the positives of him helping lift Liverpool from the doldrums of 7th and 8th place to the promised land of the Champions League.

    3. There can’t be anything more demoralising than a top player doing the business week in week out for an inferior team and even worse if it’s at a big club which is underachieving. We are winning games and he’s playing alongside a crop of young talented players who are playing without fear and don’t seem hindered by the club’s history.

The article was interesting as well in what he had to say about Daniel Sturridge in that he gets on well with him off the pitch and he [Sturridge] is always trying to make Lucas, Coutinho and Suarez laugh as he speaks Portuguese quite well, says he must of learnt it at Chelsea because of the abundance of Portuguese speakers they had there at the time. He went on to say tongue in cheek, that Sturridge should have a great World Cup because he speaks the language... :-)
