Cardiff 3 Liverpool 6: Liverpool fight back to gain crucial win

Going into our fourth away league game in five and a third in a row Brendan Rodgers and he side knew that they were up for a hard time up against relegation threatened Cardiff City with ex-Liverpool favourite Craig Bellamy among their ranks.    Having seen Arsenal ruthlessly brushed aside by leaders Chelsea, only a victory would suffice.

We showed tremendous resilience to come back twice and eventually wind up convincing winners in a game that had pitfalls written all over it.
Brendan Rodgers on the crest of wave after rightly praised for his tactical nous saw his side struggle to adapt to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s formation based on three-centre-half’s  and two wing-backs stabilised by Medel and Bo-Kyung Kim in the midfield engine room.   Cardiff broke with lightning speed from the start and with Liverpool unable to retain possession with Coutinho and Henderson being the main miscreants, they looked dangerous with every foray led by the front three of Bellamy, Campbell and the excellent Mutch.

Cardiff went deservedly ahead on eight minutes after Joe Allen covering the under pressure Flanagan, inexplicably rolled the ball into the path of Campbell who pulled the ball back to Mutch to nonchalantly dispatch past Mignolet

Liverpool had not long to wait for parity and when it came, it was classic 2013-14 Liverpool.   Jordan Henderson whose improvement in his all-round game continuous to confound his critics, produced a sumptuously weighted through  ball, threaded through inside full-back Declan John for Johnson to run onto and he in turn picked out the unmarked Suarez to tap in.
Cardiff, not to be denied were still on the ascendency with Liverpool failing to stem the flow of attacks down the right targeting the erstwhile impressive Flanagan, who was in the midst of a torrid afternoon, his worst in a red shirt.   Campbell picking the ball in the inside right position found himself alone with Flanagan out of position, ruthlessly cut inside, stepping Agger to clinically shoot home in expert fashion.

Liverpool bags another hat-trick
The growth of this Liverpool side has seen others step up to the creative and goal scoring stakes and while Suarez and Sturridge are the two points of the attack, the second-half of the season has seen Sterling, Gerrard, Coutinho, Henderson and Skrtel step up to ease the burden.   Sturridge and Suarez give Liverpool the belief that this team has the X-Factor to take itself into the unknown, but the team is growing whereby others impacted on games. This time it was Skrtel and Coutinho.

Four minutes before half-time, Philippe Coutinho still out on the right following his corner, received Gerrard’s headed pass.  David Blaine as the magical Brazilian is called by his teammates, whipped over a low cross which was met on the volley at close range by Martin Skrtel leaving Marshall with no chance.  It was a body blow for a Cardiif side aiming to get into half-time ahead.

The turning point came eight minutes after the break when Cardiff with two players Theophile-Catherine and Mutch off the pitch receiving attention, were unable to defend Coutinho’s corner satisfactorily allowing Skrtel to head home unchallenged with the far post unguarded.
Liverpool sniffing an opening went for the jugular.  Johnson’s near post cross found its way to Sturridge with his back to goal and the England striker with his ESP (Extra Suarez Perception) on high alert, back-heeled to find his striking partner stealing in to finish.  It was exquisite from two footballers at the top of their game.

The deadly duo
With Kenwyne Jones and Wilfried Zaha now on Cardiff still looked threatening, but any thoughts of squaring the match was killed off when Liverpool struck a fifth.  Glen Johnson hit a left footed long-range diagonal cross-field ball which Suarez anticipated dropping over Caulker.   The league’s top marksman repaid the favour by rolling the ball to Sturridge .

Mutch deservedly scored a late header with the Liverpool defence failing to track Kenwyne Jones as he headed back to Mutch.   We scored a sixth when Suarez anticipated Juan Cala’s dithering to run in and score for his hat-trick and 28th League goal of the season (equalling Robbie Fowler’s 28 in the 1995-96 season).

Man of the Match:  Daniel Sturridge – the striker ran his heart out for the cause, running the flanks and in between the lines, and even when Liverpool were under the cosh in the first-half using what little ball he saw thoughtfully.    His back heel to set up Suarez second-goal was a thing of beauty and it is patently obvious that he is not just playing well, but enjoying himself too.
Martin Skrtel’s goals were critical coming as a time when we were stuttering and as with many a good team goal scoring defenders are worth their weight in goal and even with the return to fitness of Mamadou Sakho it would take a brave decision from Brendan Rodgers to usurp the Slovakian.

Luis Suarez has had better games for Liverpool and scored none, but today showed the value of having a world-class player in the ranks.  And for me what showed his determination and fight was with Cardiff one-nil up and Jordon Mutch on the edge of the area looking to position himself to shoot, he arrived from know where to dispossess the striker.

Critical eye:  Philippe Coutinho did what it said on the packet.  He produced two assist, both times for Skrtel, but once again he was guilty of frittering away possession which is criminal when Liverpool were struggling to hold on to the ball and he also failed to help provide cover defensively we know he has done and is capable of doing, especially with Jon Flanagan continually under threat.  It’s where Raheem Sterling has crept ahead of him as he seems more naturally aware of his defensive responsibilities.
Jon Flanagan today found out that football is not all about ups, but we know he has the character to step up again to the challenge.  Unfortunately, it took his colleagues far too long to provide the required defensive cover, but by the time he went off he seemed to have regained some of his equilibrium.

Once again, Liverpool showed then even when lapsing into defensive errors we have far too much offensively and it’s that and a willingness to work hard which is pulling us into the Champions League and hopefully much more.
Blast from the past:  Craig Bellamy showed with his pace, guile and touch that his still has plenty to offer and what would we give for him to be the third/experience striker in the Liverpool squad –received a well-deserved standing ovation upon being substituted.  Craig Bellamy, YNWA.

  1. With Chelsea winning 6-0 earlier in the day it was so important not to lose ground to the current leaders and despite conceding another three goals I am delighted that we did our job, won the game and move onto the next one.

    1. Impressive to win so comfortably after such a slow start and just need to keep the momentum going!

    2. I hope we all had a great weekend

David, How is the Mrs (Arsenal seems to be imploding faster than you can say A-R-S-E-N-A )

    3. It was a great weekend, just wish the Chelski game ended in a draw.

    4. It was a great result for us and as for the wife’s team losing (Never mind!! LOL ) It helps us all the same – we just need City to lose some points versus our old rivals Man Utd tomorrow and then we are seriously in business !!!

Bring on Sunderland on Wednesday and win that to keep the winning run going and maintain our positive momentum. We can win this but we just need to keep winning our games – taking it one game at a time !!!

    5. Its hard not to give the man of the match award when someone scores a hatrick, though Sturridge was outstanding. They did seem to target Flanagan. People keep talking about the so called approach of “if you score 2 then we’ll just have to score 3”. I don’t think that’s BR’s approach at all – he will want to ensure that we keep clean sheets and not concede unnecessary goals.

    6. I think Arsenal Manager spent the whole of last week praising himself for the 1000 games in charge instead of preparing his players for the game against Chelsea. I will be supporting MU for the first time tomorrow against Man City. We were really sloppy in the first half but boy how they step up the gear in the second half. The equalizing goal was taken from Barc archive. Long may this continue. Sunderland the next steop.

    7. Conceding silly goals against teams such as Cardiff is a major concern for me. They are an ok side but we should be giving them so many chances to score. For them to get three goals on Saturday was not what I expected from us.

I totally believe that Jose Mourinho will be working out a plan (even now!!!) on how to combat our offensive play when we meet them on 27th April. He will be thinking if they keep a clean sheet in that game they will win the title.

    8. Our work rate would need to be at 120% against City and Chelski.

    9. great win, we just need to keep going, Agree David, we should not have conceded three goals, which is a concern again. At this point now, we don't really want to be chasing goals if we are down, we should be in good position to win games like of Cardiff.

JM - is not an idiot, he be watching our videos until the game, he knows we are on the shoulder breathing down, title contender..

    10. Just had a look at Chelski remaining games. Apart from us the highest team that they would be playing is Stoke.

    11. Apparently those are the sort of games they come short.

Also, I do not care what tactic Jose come to Anfield, we will get back the 3 points they took from us.

    12. We won and that's all that matters. We have our faults defensively, but we know that any way and it's always going to be difficult with our attacking bent and not really have a midfield capable of stopping runners from midfield bearing down on our defence, that's something for next season.

Interestingly, should Stevie get a yellow card on Wednesday then he get's an automatic one game ban, so will he play Lucas or play his strongest side? I would lean towards playing Stevie against Sunderland.

    13. I know we won and that’s the main thing - gosh we scored 6 goals away from home so we should all be happy. But the problem is that leaking unnecessary goals could become a habit again, especially after keeping successive clean sheets. What if our strikers are unable to score? For me, we have gifted teams too many goals this season and too many of them have been through unforced errors.

Stevie’s been sailing close to the wind in recent games and could have been sent off. You can see he’s adrenalin is pumping. No longer can he stick to the standard line of “take one game at a time” – he’s going for the jugular and wants to win the league. Its inevitable that he’s get another yellow before the end of the season. We’ll just have to cope with whats thrown at us if we are to win the league. At some point, Lucas will probably need to feature in some of our games in the run in so we may need to give him some minutes. Had we scored 6 and not conceded on Saturday, maybe we could have given him some minutes to help with his match fitness.

    15. When we went five two up that was the time to bring on Lucas for Sturridge and completely shut the game down in midfield.

    16. Not sure whether BR was confident that he wouldn’t need Sturridge to score another goal.

    17. Given the fella's injury record he should be looking to spare him at every turn.

    18. I know but given that we have a very thin squad in that department, we have to use what we have. We have to keep our fingers crossed that nothing happens to Joe too.

    19. we won the game with Merit, and no doubt we will see few changes over the weeks coming, Lucas in particular, just to rest one or two...

    20. We now have 3 games in 8 days, which is probably why Sterling was rested on Saturday.

      Delete
    21. I'm talking about bringing the guy off with 15 minutes to go not missing a match.

      Delete
    22. Yeah but I think BR probably feels that he wants to keep his goal threat on the pitch in case we concede more goals. Judging by the appearance of Sturridge when being substituted, he might not leave the field of play if he gets the hook with more than 5 minutes remaining.

    23. Common sense says that we're being out numbered in midfield and are well up on the goal count there comes a time to close the hatches.

      Delete
    24. But this is not always about the obvious. Common sense to the masses may be very different to the man who matters, namely BR. He had an opportunity to bring on Lucas if he chose to but he brought on Sterling for Coutinho instead. He could just as well of put Henderson in that role but he chose Sterling, though he does have more defensive attributes than Coutinho.

      Delete
    25. As far I can see Rodgers is fully aware. Why does he replace Coutinho with Sterling? Because as you intermate he is now more of a physical presence and its probably the reason Coutinho didn't start against the Mancs. But, there is no point saying we have a thin squad when barring Enrique, we have all our players back inluding our most defensive midfielder. If Gerrard was to get a yellow card or God forbid get injured, Lucas is the only player who would fit the role.

      Delete
    26. Gerrard picked up his latest yellow card against Cardiff City on Saturday and must avoid getting one more before the second weekend of April to avoid sitting out any games,

      Delete
    27. Which supports the point that it makes sense to get some match time into Lucas, first when we are comfortably ahead and not end up as in the Fulham and Cardiff games bringing on a centre-half to stave off the pressure near the end of the game and second to increase his match fitness.

It means Gerrard has got to go four games without a yellow card to avoid a two game suspension which seems extremely difficult given the amount of covering he does. He's picked up 7 yellows in his last 10 games.

      Delete
    28. Absolutely - maybe he'll get some game time tomorrow.
