Man Utd 0 Liverpool 3: Gerrard spot kick double inspires comfortable win

Written by dedlfc

The build up to this game surrounded the fact that we were now favourites to beat our old Lancashire rivals at their ground for the first time in almost twenty years.

We again started the game with Allen playing to provide midfield support to Henderson and Gerrard with the three Ss interchanging further up front.

The first early chance fell to Sturridges's weaker right foot again as Henderson slipped a ball into his path, but as in previous games instead of shooting across the keeper who fires wide at the near post. He should have done much better with that so it's a big escape for United.

The promising start continues with Suarez seemingly clipped as he raced into the area by Fellaini, with Suarez showing honesty by remaining on his feet he should be given credit but we all know that this will not happen.

The tackles came flying in with proper challenges flying in first between Gerrard and Jones which leaves the latter winded, before Van Persie slides in hard but fairly on Flanagan.

With us dominating possession and creating chances it was already looking like we were in for a comfortable afternoon.

Man Utd then have their first sight of goal as Fellaini crosses from the left towards the back post for Van Persie. The ball is a little too high for the Dutchman, but he brings it down nonetheless. His first effort is blocked by Skrtel, who then charges down the second attempt, which rolls through to Mignolet. Then, up the other end, Sturridge scuffs another really good opportunity this time with his left foot from eight yards out.

Celebrations at the Ruse pub in Borough, London
Joe Allen then spurns a very good chance when a deflected pass drops to him from about 12 yards but his shot bounces into the ground, which takes a lot of the pace off the strike and makes it easy for Utd keeper De Gea to collect. That's made it three really good chances that we had thrown away it was starting to look like one of those days!

In a booking fest both Flanagan for a push on Januzaj and Utd's Rafael for a reckless late challenge on Gerrard got deserved cautions.

A massive decision by referee Clatterburg gave us a penalty with Utd defender Rafael handling the ball to stop Suarez advancing toward goal but inexplicably not being sent off for his second offence in a matter of minutes.

There is no one else that we want taking penalties for us than our captain fantastic Stevie G and he placed the ball with aplomb high into the top right of the Utd goal to give us a deserved lead.

Shortly after putting us ahead Gerrard went into the referee's book for a late challenge on Fellaini.

The first half ended with Utd trying to get to grips with our midfield but apart from Rooney have a well struck half volley palmed away by Mignolet they were unable to influence the game, we had full control and looked to extend our lead in the second half.

A halftime statistic that highlighted our control was that only Mignolet out of the Liverpool players with 17 touches had less touches than Van Persie with 18 touches.

With the second half just starting we all thought that Utd would come out firing but we shocked them with our fantastic quick start. From the whistle we raid forward and when Henderson flicks the ball into the path of Allen, he's pushed to the ground by Phil Jones.

Up steps Gerrard again and although De Gea guesses correctly, the ball skids beneath and beyond him. It's a long way back for United now.

Shortly afterwards, Rooney is adamant that he should have had a penalty after he's upended by Skrtel right on the edge of the area. Some referees may have given it, but Clattenburg stands firm. Moments later Skrtel is then booked for a foul on Mata.

Moyes continues to avoid making changes to the momentum of us controlling the game, we in fact make the first substitution of the game with a break in play due to Vidic going in the book for a challenge on Suarez, Sterling comes off for Coutinho.

Gerrard then gets a couple of chances to complete his hat-trick with the first one deflecting wide off defender Jones, while the second shot goes over the bar.

Moyes finally decides to make a substitution England internationals Welbeck and Tom Cleverley enter the action. They have replaced Fellaini and Januzaj.

We then win an unheard of 3rd penalty awarded to us to give Stevie G a great chance to secure the first spot kicks hat-trick since Jan Molby in November 1985 and the first Premiership spot kick hat-trick,  the penalty was given as Sturridge threw himself to the floor following a sliding challenge by Vidic, who received his second yellow card in the process. The spot kick collides with the post and Gerrard misses out on Premiership history.

Then follows a great stop from De Gea, who throws himself to his right to deny Suarez's powerful effort from close range. Suarez was not to be denied though and he shortly added to Utd's woes.

A mis-hit strike from Sturridge rolls into his path and having controlled it with a deft touch, he bends the ball beyond the reach of a helpless De Gea. Our fantastic away support are jubilant and celebrating!

Late change for Liverpool and it's two-goal hero Gerrard that leaves the field to be replaced by Lucas to a standing ovation.  There is also a swap for United, with Mata off and Rio Ferdinand on.

The game then concludes with us celebrating a great win.

Positives
If there was any doubt as to whether we were title contenders, there isn't now. We were in cruise control for so much of the match that it was so relaxing and we all will love the fact that we have battered United at Old Trafford as well.

To get three penalties at Old Trafford is testimony to our attacking and midfield units working so well to get between the lines of the defence and midfield of Utd.

Another clean sheet only breeds further confidence.

Critical Eye

We dominated Utd so much that we should really have had six or seven goals.

It was an emphatic win and a comfortable one at that- we are now officially in the race!

  1. Getting ready for work with a feeling of great confidence and our captain’s interview fills me with great pride – whereas everyone else is saying that other teams are favourites – Stevie G is saying we are in this title race, this game was a massive test and we passed it with flying colours, I just want us to keep ticking over game by game by just winning – we are going to go very close to winning this and I truly believe that we have a fantastic chance.

Roll on Cardiff next week Saturday!!!

    1. David – you sure you didn't help with the wording of the banner that was raised close to the end of the game. Sarcasm of the first order “David Moyes is a football genius”

    2. 11 best players does not make the best team but we need a few quality/good/international reinforcement players for C/L next season.

    4. we defiantly need to buy some quality players now we will be stepping into Champion arena

apparently when DM came into Manu, all the back staff got sacked and he brought in he's own regiment lol.

      please keep him on....,

Cant believe I read a article in the Metro about Rooney, and his worth of three hundred grand a week, cos of hes talent, TWAT

    5. The best shots from Man U was that of Moyes and Fergie. Still can't tell which one looks older. Moyes should be given six years, as per contract - he's doing a great job. We were immense with a clean sheet too. Gerrard and his two sidekicks were brilliant getting stuck in. Dare to dream - sure thing. Win all our games and away we go. Regardless of what Rogers says, the players have taken the decision that they're going for the title regardless.

    6. Well by my calculation the top 4 may be secured on or before the 20th of April if we keep the fire power going. I believe strongly that Chelsea and Man City will relinquish the 3 points respectively we were robbed on their ground by the officials.

    7. Would be nice and if the League comes it comes.

The key thing at the moment is being able to watch a Champions League game and thus putting ourselves in the shop window to buy top class players.

    8. Brendan needs to be given credit for the turnaround in fortunes for the careers of Jordan Henderson and Daniel Sturridge.

Very pleased to also see Joe Allen get a little bit of credit for a very good performance.

    9. I think this email group tend to give, with the exception of earlier in the season when people were cremating Stevie G, credit where its due – Jo certainly deserves it. BR has been tatically sharp in recent weeks – even his substitutions seem well judged. If we carry on in the same vein in the run in till the end, BR is without question the manager of the season, even if we don’t take the Premiership crown. The improvement in points between last season and this season is remarkable, especially given the size of the squad. Not sure about crediting BR with the turnaround in the careers of Jordan Henderson – perhaps Fergie should be given the credit there. I think BR has given the lads the confidence and opportunity to believe in themselves and the way to play the game. I think Suarez and Stevie have had a lot to do with the progress of some of the players too as their desire is infectious. It’s a lovely day.

    10. Wouldn’t it be wonderful for Stevie G to go out on a high and win the last trophy missing from his trophy cabinet and then just say “I have done my bit lets now leave it to the younger guys!!”

I want the greatest LFC player in this era to go out winning something major, if he stays on I don’t want his career to end with no trophies and then retire – if he continues he needs to win another Champions League next season !!!! LOL

    11. 100% agreement with your statement.

    12. You have to say, Rodgers, has done a great job, and now we have destiny in our own hands, must over come Chelsea and Manchester City at Anfield. Having beaten big games like Arsenal and Everton washed out. Some thought United was going to be the toughest running, anything is possible. It can be done, lets make the dream real .

lets not mess up now, still one game at a time.

      Delete
    13. City can afford to lose to us and they’d still have a 1 point lead but they have Kompany banned for their next 3 games (Fulham, United and Arsenal) so it’s not inconceivable that they could drop a couple of points before we play them in April.

      Delete
    14. Before City even get to us they have to play Man United away (without Aguero probably) and then Arsenal away and Southampton - if they they come out of that with 9 points then fair play to them.

      Delete
    15. If we win our next two games against Cardiff and Sunderland we’ll go top next Wednesday night. Why does that make me feel a little bit queasy?

      Delete
    16. BR gets the credit for me. Because his baseline assessment is spot on. He walked into Anfield and promised to make Jordan Henderson a better so it turn out right. Sounness is evening labelling him unsung hero for his work rate, hassling people on the ball and causing unforced errors.

      Delete
    17. Ok lets win them first then – then we can see how we feel!!!!

      Delete
    18. Sorry, my mistake, the Chavs would still be top by one point if they beat Arsenal this weekend.

    19. Remember folks no one expect us to be where we are at right now given the level of investment in the Summer and with no signing at the January transfer window. So as David rightly put it, let us get to the top of the Submit and we can take it from there.

    20. No sure MU will be as bad against MCity.

    21. Totally agree with Vic if they beat Man Utd away, Arsenal away and Southampton at home, they will deserve to be top. But if they do not ………..

The title race is really on !!!!

      Delete
    22. If we win all of our games, we will be champions, simple as that, isn’t it?

      Delete
    23. No we need Man City to drop points in one other game.

      Delete
    24. Arse and City for a draw, please.

      Delete
    25. That is just the key. If the probable happens and we win all our games, it does not matter what Man City or Chelsea or Arsenal are cooking, they all will only be smelling what Liverpool is cooking at Anfield.

Every United fan in work looks like they’ve had their toys taken away, cheer up mate it could have been 6 or 7. David Moyes is indeed a football genius, please, please, give him plenty of money to spend in the Summer. 5 more years! 5 more years!.....Oh what a beautiful day.

  5. A really good point that I read the other day is that apart from Sakho who’s influence you would have to say has been limited by injury no sigining from last Summer has made any material contribution to Liverpool’s immense improvement this season. In other words Brendan Rodgers has achieved all this progress with essentially same squad that he had last year (minus Jamie Carragher) which is a real testament to his ability to improve players through coaching. The man deserves massive credit and I for one really hopes that he signs a new contract pronto.

    1. For me if we take care of business everything will take care of itself. We can't worry about the others because they have equally as much pressure if not more. Arsenal because they haven't won anything, City because they're expected to win the Premiership and much as Mourinho would like to deny it Chelsea as Mourinho would like to deny it there is an expectation.

As others have alluded two we've gone away to Southampton and Man Utd, both games we could've tripped up on and won convincingly and in our last away game preceeding that played terribly at Fulham and showed resilience in eeking out a win in a match last season we'd probably have lost.

It's easy to overlook the fact we moved from 7th to a top four position and we know only to well that if you don't qualify as Man U won't it's 18 months until the possibility of playing in the Champions League again. I was surprised given the way he's been playing lately at Van Persie's comments pre-match. Eighteeen months and he'll be 32 going and Rooney will be almost 30. That's why is difficult to buy top players who are on 26 + if you're not playing in the Champions League as they are reaching their peak and Suarez said the otherday everytime he watches the Champions League he has pangs of envy.

    2. Read this last night - if true sounds like the owner may still be smarting from the fact that he almost went to Liverpool and he felt his hand was being forced at the time. He said something akin to London should is the player's favourable destination over Liverpool - so it's all about the monies! If we were talking Arsenal or Chelsea, but Spurs...

We need a winger eventually, but if it's not be him, there are others to be bought and hopefully Jordan Ibe et al will step up to the plate.

      Delete
    3. Good luck to him and his President. Last summer Spurs stock piles players, I am yet to see the outcome. When a Manager identify a player he would have identified where he needs to strengthen in the squad. At the point we are, with destiny in our hands, it is imperative that players from now on will be queuing up for yeses for Liverpool.

Jordan Henderson very rightly asked Liverpool to move on from MU victory and concentrate on Cardiff this weekend. Diego Maradona, is publicly saying that Liverpool is on the pole to winning the league. Good to be flattered by the great legend of the game but we should know that there is still a lot of hard work to be done before we can celebrate that illusive 19th titles. Hopefully once we secured the Champion League spot, we can start dreaming for the winning of the League. That is my take, one game at the time. I do not think Chelsea and Man City relish the idea of coming to Afield at this stage of the Season.
