White hot Reds destroy Arsenal in 20 minutes of devastation

Arsenal’s players looked shell-shocked after experiencing an explosive opening which had the game won and Arsene Wenger’s team counting their blessings that four was all they had conceded in a ferocious 20 minute burst.

Liverpool were mesmerising against an Arsenal team returning to Anfield brimming with confidence having returned to the top and with only one loss at the ground in 7 years.

The mayhem started inside a minute after Per Mertesacker pulled back Suarez and Gerrard wickedly delivered free-kick left Skrtel to stab home from close range.  The impressive Jon Flanagan nearly added to the score, from a subtle Sturridge through pass saw his shot well saved by Szczesny.

Arsenal’s peace was short lived as Skrtel moving away from the goal met Gerrard’s corner showing great dexterity to head over Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to equal his best ever goal scoring season for the Reds.

Liverpool were now an irresistible force moving into overdrive with Arsenal powerless to resist wave after wave of Liverpool attacks and when Suarez sent Sturridge through Anfield was stunned in amazement to see his shot screw wide of the far post.

It seemed only a matter time before Suarez would get his name on the score sheet and it almost happened with a spectacular volley which smacked flush against the post with Kolo Toure prodding the rebound wide of a gaping net.

With Liverpool not possessing a midfielder destroyer, Rodgers employees a pressing game which involves pressuring opponents in all areas and it was this which instigated the next goal.  Jordan Henderson harried the disappointing Mesut Ozil, finding Suarez who in turn played an inch perfect cross for Sterling to score ahead of Sturridge.  It was no more than Liverpool deserved as they were playing football from a dimension which Arsenal were not familiar.

Coutinho and Sturridge repeated their double-act from the Everton game when the young Brazilian’s beautifully weighted pass sending Sturridge through to decisively clip in past the goalkeeper for a goal which had class written all over it and Wenger wishing that Flamini was not serving a three-match ban.

It was an unbelievable and stunning 20 minutes against the Premiership leaders.

Liverpool with the game all but won, settled down into a rhythm with less intensity which allowed Arsenal back in the game.

The only way in the second-half Arsenal were going to get into the game was for Liverpool to fall back into the bad habits of earlier in the season and drop intensity levels.

It was not be for Arsene Wenger’s men.

Ten minutes in and Toure found Sterling scampering through.  His shot was saved by Szczesny who was powerless to stop him from knocking home the rebound to make it 5-0.
All for one
Luis Suarez shaped as if to cross from a free-kick from 35 yards, but produced an exquisite curling shot which looked preordained for the top corner only for a scrabbling Szczesny to claw the ball out at the last.

Disappointingly, Arsenal scored from a penalty after Gerrard rashly brought down Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Sterling had the opportunity to close out the game with a hat-trick after leaving the pacey Gibbs for dead with a blistering run, only to fluff his lines at the last and seeing his shot squirm past the post.

It was a win which sent out a marker, but which Liverpool need to profit by at winning at Fulham on Wednesday.

Man of the Match:  Raheem Sterling – Another imperious performance from the Liverpool winger.  His game now offers so much more in a season where he has begun to find himself on the score sheet.  He has an uncanny knack of finding himself in the right position at the right time whether in support of Sturridge and Suarez or covering the full-backs, proof positive that he is coming out from under the shadows of his more celebrated colleagues.

Critical eye:  Liverpool squeezed Arsenal from the first minute to the last not allowing them to settle into their formidable passing game often pushing them back and out of their comfort zone.  The third goal was a great example with Ozil hassled and left in a heap from the pressure exerted by Jordan Henderson and Liverpool’s incisive play was rewarded with a goal which demoralised Arsenal.

With very little in terms of  a powerhouse midfielder every Liverpool player displayed a commitment to the cause with even Philippe Coutinho showing commitment and fierce determination to get the job done.

Good to see the manager taking the opportunity to rest his key players and giving some playing time to Aspas and Ibe.

Teams:

Liverpool: 22  Mignolet, 38 Flanagan, 20 Cissokho, 8 Gerrard (Ibe – 76 mins), 37 Skrtel, 4 Kolo Toure, 10 Coutinho, 14 Henderson, 7 Suarez (Iago Aspas- 86 – mins), 31 Sterling, 15 Sturridge (Allen – 66 mins)

Substitutes: 1 Jones, 6 Luis Alberto, 9 Iago Aspas, 12 Moses, 24 Allen, 33 Ibe, 34, Kelly

Arsenal: 1 Szczesney, 3 Sagna, 17 Monreal (Gibbs – 61 mins), 10 Wilshere, 4 Mertesacker, 6 Koscielny, 15 Oxlade-Chamberlain, 8 Arteta, 12 Giroud (Podolski – 60 min), 11 Ozil (Rosicky – 61 min), 19 Cazorla

  1. The intensity and determination to win back the ball was a joy to behold and the way we were determined to start the game fast was also brilliant to watch.

Coutinho, Suarez, Sterling and Suarez all had excellent games and if they do that for the next 13 games of the season we will have a great chance of not just getting top 4 but ending up even higher.

We need to now beat Fulham on Wednesday or the 5-1 win vs Arsenal will mean nothing.

    16. How is the missus David ? Has she sufficiently recovered from the shell shock. I had one Arsenal Supporter tell me they were definitely going to beat us at home on Saturday as they haven’t lost at Anfield for 7 years. The cocky one’s deserve all the ribbing they get, the rest can be treated with kids gloves for a while until they recover. Brilliant performance from the team, which shows they have it in them to beat most teams as long as they don’t let them settle into a comfortable passing game. GREAT RESULT!

    21. Guys, I did not have to say anything to Arsenal fan who has been taunting several months now with the message “who is at the top” I always response by saying Arsenal. This morning I just carried my “This is Liverpool Football Club Anfield” plaque and walk pass him. Kolo almost atoned for his mistake by scoring against Arsenal from a volley rebounded. That was the volley of the highest order by Suarez. Wow!!! We were two goals short of given them 7 and 1 for each year.

    2. It was a fantastic day out, I was down the local bar surrounded by Gooners, by the end I was practically alone, they’d all left!!! During the first half they were all just shaking their heads saying things like “Flamini wouldn’t let this happen”. It was just awesome stuff from the reds all over the park, a highlight for me was Michael Owen channelling Gandalf on the commentary, he was talking about a tackle that Cissoko put in on the Ox “Thou shall not pass!” I nearly spat out my Guinness.

    3. LOL

KP had a similar experience with Gooners being very quiet in a pub he was watching the game in – he will no doubt tell you about it later. LOL

    4. Myself and Boydy went to the Ruse in Borough, where the London LFC Supporters Club Branch congregate, the place was packed, with a flock of Arsenal supporters near by the entrance, I guess positioning themselves for egress as if they knew what was coming! Not that I knew that at the time, as I only knew they were Arsenal fans once the first goal went in a we were all hugging big time and there was stillness over there as if all posing for Rodin’s The Thinker… like what the …. I haven’t even sipped my first pint!

After the second goal went in, it was delirium… Me, Boydy and his mate went into the stratosphere! I’d already moved my drink preparing for any further celebrations. Asked the fella behind me if he was a Gooner because he wasn’t cheering either way, no emotion at all! Claimed he was a football fan… either a Gooner of a Manc or a plank (same difference!).

End of the game the manager, puts on YNWA and we all burst into song, look across for the Arsenal massive and it seems egress works very well in that pub!

    7. Hasn’t that always been the way... with a lot more pressure? Remember Oscar’s penalty against WBA in the 96th minute when he took a dive and they ended up drawing the match. Mike Riley apologised... but it cost WBA a win. They could certainly do with those points now!

In the history of the Premiership we’ve been awarded more penalties than any other team, followed by Arsenal, Man U Newcastle and Chelsea in that order. You could argue that those teams are in the danger zone more often, but Aston Villa and Spurs who have spent 21 seasons in the Premiership have been awarded almost 30 less penalties.

  5. Likewise Barry, was bit concerned when I saw the team but he got it spot on again...my fears about coutinho in middle were laughable with him making more tackles (12) than any other player in red...that bit in second half where he left three arsenal players running into each other before playing henderson in was poetry in motion!

Incredible performance and rodgers deserves a lot of credit for how he has turned the team around. Performances like that make you think that perhaps the lack of going after a midfield destroyer was tactical and that is how he intends to play going forward....

Also, great to see suarez put a shift in on the right, totally selflessly. He is ten goals away from breaking prem scoring record and get the impression he couldn't care less if he is scoring as long as the team are winning....

    2. Well now that the RMT Strike is Off - Here come the Reds Machine....

I want any team that plays Liverpool to feel that they have been in a game - Brendan Rodgers.

Arsenal certainly felt the Red wrath.

    3. Really glad the game is on – judging by experience it would have been chaotic if they were unable to arrange sufficient security to be at the game on time. Perhaps its not just a simple matter of being able to hire a coach – I’m no expert – maybe David or Valerie know more about how these things work.

      Delete
    4. All I will say on the matter is that Arsenal expect their staff to make their way into the ground by any means necessary. They do not provide any alternative arrangements for their employees even though they are one of the top ten richest clubs in world football !!!

    5. we just need to put another high tempo performance in, probably not on the same level of goals, but pressing on them quicker than they blink!!

A must win to keep the pressure on!

    6. Hard not to think their was ulterior motive of wanting to avoid match at this point, allow players chance to enjoy massive point at ot recover, allow more time for 12 million striker to get fit. The strike has been scheduled for weeks and they hostsed a game last week during the strikes!

See below on henderson - another examply of a player growing into his role when allowed a bit of time despite being completely written off by many. He was alwasy going to grown into a great player with his incredible stamina just needed the confidence to assume more of a leadership role within the team...

    7. See below:

Liverpool defenders Daniel Agger and Glen Johnson both returned to training this week but Wednesday's trip to Fulham may come too soon for a return.

Agger (calf) has missed the last six matches while Johnson has been out since mid-January with ankle and groin problems.

Portugal Under-21 midfielder Joao Carlos Teixeira could be included in the travelling party to freshen up the Reds' squad after training with the first team recently.

Nonetheless, it's expected that manager Brendan Rodgers will name the same starting lineup that smashed Arsenal 5-1 on Saturday lunchtime.

Therefore, expect Jon Flanagan to continue at right-back, with Raheem Sterling, Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez continuing as a front trio, with Philippe Coutinho floating behind.

Provisional squad: Mignolet, Flanagan, Skrtel, Toure, Cissokho, Gerrard, Henderson, Sterling, Coutinho, Sturridge, Suarez, Jones, Kelly, Allen, Alberto, Aspas, Moses, Ibe, Teixeira.

    8. Teixeira is a fantastic prospect.

    9. I’m sure David “Opta” Douglas will want to crawl over these stats.

“Henderson’s ability to link play can go overlooked but it should register that he has contributed six assists, while 86 per cent of his 1,314 passes to date have fond the target.”

I think a lot of us would have to eat humble pie given some of the statements we’ve made about our players over the past couple of years – e.g. “Taxi for Maxi!” “The Hen” as well as the footballing death of Steven Gerrard which was grossly exaggerated. We’ll all repent about Cissokho soon.

    10. Fantastic figures which agree with the “Moneyball” philosophy on players which FSG base their sporting targets on.

    11. Luke, I remember conversing with you just before the Everton game and I said I was worried about Coutinho because of his propensity to lose the ball and not add much in the way of a defensive game to our play.

The last two home games everyone has pitched in. Suarez's goal against Everton started from a block tackle from Sturridge which is why Henderson congratulated him during the celebrations. It's going to be difficult to keep up that intensity during the run-in, but it appears the only way, but it does mean that Allen and even Lucas late-on will have some part to play.

The intensity has got to be there from the off against Fulham, rather than the tepid display we saw against WBA and the last thing we want is a boisterous Fulham crowd behind a team that's fighting to stay in the Premiership.

  7. Does anyone know if Fulham’s new Greek striker will make his debut tomorrow? He looks quite a big lump, just the type of player that gives Marty Skrtel kittens. I’m going to predict a thumping loss for us just because it seemed to work when I said that Le Arse would give us a good spanking!!!! Doooooom…..doom and gloom…… I’m not going to predict the line up because there’s no chance that Rodgers will change the line up from Sunday, unless someone’s leg is hanging off and we haven’t heard.

  8. Please can some one tell BR that the current trend of winning matches against top clubs and dropping points against Club like the one we are facing tonight is no good. We should treat Fulham with all the respect. He should not change the winning team, yes Glen Johnson and Agger are all back but they should start on the bench if need be.
