The disappointment etched of the faces of the Liverpool fans
was there for all to see and it was even more marked on our faces huddled
together among a sea of delirious West Brom fans. It was hard to take knowing that a win would
have taken us onto the coattails of Chelsea before their meeting with Man City
and building momentum before next Sunday’s game with Arsenal.
In a game of relatively few chances, Liverpool through
Suarez, had a chance early in the second-half to put the game to bed when the
maestro having extricated himself from Lugano’s challenge only to see shot expertly
saved by the feet of Ben Foster.
Liverpool never got close to the intensity of the Merseyside
Derby and coasted through the first-half never going through the gears
and were still in front after 25 minutes. Sterling,
who had a fine game, strode forward on
the right and somehow the ball broke to Suarez, who with very little space manufactured
a chipped cross to find his partner Sturridge to tap home for his 14th Premiership
goal of the season.
Liverpool were looking to close the game out and Sterling’s
darting run and shot earned a corner from which Toure almost dug out a second
from close range.
Foster's point blank save from Suarez galvanised a West Brom side streering down the
barrel of relegation. Pressing
further up the pitch West Brom began to build pressure
and it was only a stunning reaction save from
Mignolet that denied Gareth McAuley from a header and the Liverpool keeper was seen in action again to hold onto a Chris
Brunt free-kick, which from where we were seated looked as if it was angling
towards the corner of the net.
Kolo Toure's jesture says it all |
Then came the moment which which could cost Liverpool dear. Mignolet inadvisidly, played the ball to
Toure, but even so the experienced International defender had the option of
passing back to his goalkeeper or Cissokho or clearing his lines, but inexplicably he rolled the ball into the path of Victor
Anichebe and the ex-Everton defender needed no invitation slot the ball past
Mignolet’s dispearing dive.
Apart from Sturridge seeing an opportunity blocked off by Foster Liverpool had run dry and there
seemed very little left in the tank.
The opportunity to leave a statement of intent by pulling
four points clear of Everton and nine of Man United was lost and should we lose
out on a Champions League place by two or four points the games against Aston Villa
and West Brom will be a painful reminder of failure.
Man of Match: Raheem
Sterling – The effervescent youngster is growing in stature with each game. His searing pace, awareness (especially
covering for Jon Flanagan), close control and his ability to hold the ball up in
tight situations belies his inexperience.
He was instrumental in the goal, his tenacious vigour creating the
fortune to which the ball found its way through to Suarez.
Critical eye: If
Brendan Rodgers didn’t know how hard the run is going to be, he does now.
The game highlighted just how one dimensional Liverpool can
be as our game, based around the front four and a counter-attacking style, was not for the first time this season found wanting once the West
Brom fight back started.
There was very little on the bench to change things in the
last half-hour with the manager seemingly holding out very little trust in Moses, Aspas
and Alberto which doesn’t all go well for the future. The fact that we don’t possess a goal-scoring
midfielder is worrying and hopefully in the final third of the season Henderson, Allen and Gerrard can bridge the gap.
Philippe Coutinho struggled with the attentions of the West
Brom midfield. It could’ve been interesting to
bring on Victor Moses and play him in a similar role with his physicality and
try to break open the defence through his power running as Rodgers often
suggested the player has the capability to play in different position across
the midfield.
Cissokho’s final ball was poor in the extreme. He did well on a few occasions to cut through
down the left only for his final ball to fail to bypass the first defender and once
again positional play was sadly lacking and he owes a debt of gratitude to
colleagues for covering.
If we are to secure a Champions League place Daniel
Sturridge and Luis Suarez must stay fit throughout because they are the
difference between us and Everton, Spurs and Man United at the moment.

All,
ReplyDeleteNo comments about yesterday's game. Very disappointed.
Arsenal on Sunday.
Very disappointed with the result and the overall performance of the side. I am still trying to work out what Toure was thinking with the disastrous back pass! With Chelsea beating Man City we are now even further adrift of the top three teams and now have to beat Arsenal just to maintain our fourth place before Everton travel to Spurs on Sunday. We just love to put more pressure on ourselves!
ReplyDeleteAny news on Sakho return anyone please?
ReplyDeleteThe problem is with a hamstring it has to be rested properly or it will just go again – so Sakho has to be fully ready before he can return to the side.
DeleteBefore the Everton game Brendan stated he was 2-3 weeks away from full fitness.
DeleteConclusion
DeleteAnother defensive error for the Reds has led to more points dropped. A relatively solid first half gave the impression that Liverpool would manage to stutter to victory, before a horrendous mistake from Kolo Toure. The Ivorian is likely to receive a lot of stick now, however he has marshalled the defence well when called upon so far. Fans should not forget he was massively responsible for the string of clean sheets at the start of the season alongside Daniel Agger.
I would count myself in the number of Liverpool fans that do not see him as anything but 4th/5th choice defender and just would have liked to have seen him figure in fewer games – why purchase Ilori and then send him out on loan when we need another central defender to play alongside Skrtel?
So why all the defensive errors? Is it the standard of the defenders or the system of play, or both?
Since Rodgers took the reigns at Anfield, his risky style of play has had a significant effect on the amount of defensive errors the team are making each game, often leading to shots and goals conceded.
In Rodgers 62 games in charge, Liverpool have only got through without a defensive error on 27 occasions. When the Reds manage this they average 1.93 points per game (PPG). However in 15 games Liverpool have made 1 defensive error and on these occasions they manage 1.8 PPG. Finally when they make more than 1 error (which has happened 20 times, nearly a third of Rodgers games!) they only average 1.4 PPG. A massive decrease in points picked up.
League table-wise, this can be the difference between 3rd/4th and 7th.
To put this into perspective a little bit, a look at Mourinho’s Chelsea shows that this season they have made a total of 4 errors which have led to a shot, and 4 errors which have led to a goal. A total of 8.
Liverpool have now made 23 errors which have led to a shot, and 6 errors which have led to a goal. Perhaps the worrying factor for Liverpool fans should mainly be that these numbers do not look like dropping any time soon. A clear area for Rodgers to try to improve in, which could lead to greater success in the league.
Can you all rise and give Livingston a standing ovation for correctly predicting right from the 1st of January that Liverpool would sign any player? I just pity BR, his body language said it all, more so that he left Anfield very early in that evening, spoke volume.
ReplyDeleteWhat FSG have also forgot to be told is that once the various leagues have finished all the players will be focused on the World Cup and will not want to be sorting out transfers until after the World Cup which will mean that prices will again be extortionate.
DeleteWhereas buying players you want now would have meant that you would not have to worry as much about getting in all the players you feel will improve the side/squad.
Edet, I would have liked to be proved wrong but the club is in the hands of a business group that still can’t get their heads around the workings of the transfer system and seem to think you negotiate teams down to accept your valuation of their players even when they’re under no obligation to sell. Roll on the summer and another long list of LFC targets signing for other clubs!!
DeleteLivingstone – I recalled at the very least 3 times you maintained that you will be exceedingly shock and surprised if LFC brought in any player during the January window. Why did Ian have travelled to those two places and returned empty handed. Basel he scored zero and Ukraine zero. I think he is due on a course for “basic negotiation skill”
DeleteI see that Rodgers has tried to explain away Ayers most recent debacle after the executive director blamed Liverpool's time keeping!
DeleteTaken from the Irish Independent
“The club did everything possible to get the player in,” Rodgers claimed.
“We had our chief scout and managing director and doctor out there to conclude the deal - and from our point of view, categorically Ian Ayre did a brilliant job trying to negotiate.
“I've heard it mentioned the problem was about the money, but that was not a problem. It just wasn't to be.
“I feel really sorry for the player because he was obviously desperate to come but it's gone now and we will review it in the summer.”
Rodgers was responding to claims from Ukraine that the fault lay not at their door, but with Liverpool after executive director Andriy Rusol blamed Ayre for failing to transfer the money in time to sign off the deal.
“The president could not keep the midfielder because his contract spelled out the specific amount of compensation,” admitted Rusol, when acknowledging a £15m release clause in his contract.
“In fact, the British did not have time to complete the transaction. Our club could not sign the documents until our account received the money. And they did not receive anything before the deadline.
“Igor Kolomoisky gave the go-ahead immediately. It is not our fault, Liverpool representatives could have arrived a day or two earlier.
“Up to the deadline we were waiting for the transfer of money from Liverpool. But this did not happen.”
Rusol did give the Reds hope that a move could go through in summer though, as he conceded that Konoplyanka will eventually move on sooner or later.
“Yevhen is a very strong person and a true professional. He knows that his move to a big club is only a matter of time,” said Rusol.
Come the Summer, Spurs will be all over it. It’s ridiculous to say that a player can’t be transferred until the money is in the bank, did they think that LFC was trying to rip them off?! That isn’t a logical reason for not signing the transfer papers.
Deletemay be that's the Rule book, money in the Account before signing. but Barry your right, the thing is we always leave it the last seconds. This deal should have bee done and dusted at least 48 hours before the cut off date, and the player flow into Anfiled.
Deletemay be other clubs in other countries work differently, and want to see the money in the la Bank before signing the paper work.
you would think you cant do two things at once, sign the paper work and transfer of money, any way the amount/sum would be legal drawn up in the contract any way.
its just load of CRAP!
Baz, there is nothing logical about anything involving our recent transfer dealings.
DeleteIt comes to something when you have 34 year old Seydou Keita, once an excellent player, saying in the final throes of negotiating a transfer to us in January he pulled out and joined Valencia.... 34 year old midfielder... haven't we got one of those already....!?!
After being unveiled at the Mestalla on Monday, the Mali international told reporters: "When we received the call from Valencia, talks with Liverpool were at a very advanced stage.
"But then I told my agent we were going to Valencia. I did not doubt for a second.
"When I came to play at Mestalla with Sevilla or Barcelona I suffered a lot to win, because this is a really big club with fantastic fans. That is why I opted to come here."
Keita, who also had offers to consider from Dubai, Qatar and Turkey, has signed a six-month deal with Valencia which includes the option for a 12-month extension in the summer.
He added: "It is important that this is clear. I am coming here from China. To sign for a year-and-a-half is a difficult thing for the club.
"I told them to relax, that I would sign for six months and if I have the right level we will all have time to continue. That is better for the club and for everyone."
Yeah the policy actually seems to be non-existent, we buy players that we don’t need in well stocked positions just because they are available while leaving glaring holes in areas where the squad is paper thin. I’ll say it again, the committee isn’t working.
DeleteFSG have shown that they can be ruthless when sacking Camolli and Dalglish but the difference is that those two were failing while spending hefty sums of money, this committee is failing while spending the net equivalent of sod all, I wonder if FSG will be quite so trigger happy? If not it gives a insight into where there priorities really lie.
Ian Ayre is a yes man so he will always retain his job as long as he secures commercial deals along the way because he is incapable of negotiating transfer deals to help push the team forward to where we all want to be.
DeleteHe should revert to the role of Commercial director –In the summer there should be a new Chief Executive appointed such as David Dein or someone of that ilk and reputation who instantly earns respect and knows how to broker a deal and close a deal for the best of our club.
Just fed up with the excuses of a transfer committee not being able to agree on targets, money to be spent – it should be a simple case of the manager identifying the player and the Chief executive brokering the deal with the owners backing on the amount of money. Simple.
Joe Kinnear fell on his sword at Newcastle and although I’m not sure what the details are but he failed to make one permanent signing in two transfer windows. Its not an overnight failure of Liverpool in the transfer market, we’ve not been very good at this for years, apart from a few good pickings such as Suarez and Sturridge. Common sense should override any transfer committee. A club of our stature should have, if we are serious about being in the Champions League, we should have been going for at least a central midfielder and left back. Watching Cissokho live was actually quite scary!
DeleteThis business about a 34 is absolutely ridiculous to say the least and runs the risk of creating a dads army midfield.
You mention being trigger happy. It is not beyond the realms of possibility that we could end up outside of the top six, what then? Will FSG past the blame onto Brendan or just say in the bigger scheme of things we are on schedule?
DeleteEven with one of the best players in the world we couldn't encourage top players to come to us so why should it be any different with mega bucks from a Suarez sale?!?
DeleteThey will say we are on schedule but not realise that this is a massive missed opportunity as I suspect that Man Utd will not be as bad next season and the other contenders will all improve including Spurs & Everton.
Thee question is whether they really wanted to sign someone and I agree it could be too late next season.
DeleteMo
DeleteI suspect like many of us that they just wanted to be seen to be interested in a player but were not prepared to go the whole way to sign the player – even though flying to Ukraine to not sign a player is a bit drastic to appease fans !!! LOL
The whole lie about the stadium and awaiting the purchase of the 4 remaining houses that is holding up the process on redevelopment of the stadium and planning permission is getting to me big time.
If they really want to get this done the same houses that were holding things up in 2012 would have been resolved by now – it is highly embarrassing that a massive organisation like ours struggles to get things done.
You recalled I mentioned the pen. Well, it has gone so far up his XXXX that it may take a while to get it out.
DeleteMo
As we know, there is a clear different between stock piling players and buying the players that will impact the object of the club. I have a good look at the two players –the one that went to Chelsea that will end up warming the bench as he may not features in JM bigger picture or evolution as he called it. I am not sure the one with long name would have made it at LFC as he was already doomed to fail before LFC started the talk to buy him. All that said, I think on the balance of probability I can’t say with certainty whether we are worse off not signing any body. I am sure if there is another defensive catastrophe against Arsenal come Saturday, the story may change.
DeleteFellow Reds
DeleteCome on lets be optimistic, we are currently 4th.
I was musing to a fellow Red recently, that if I were Rodgers, I would drop the reserves and a few promising academy players in it, to sink or swim.
Before you all probably slate me, or table the excuse of a high expectations, well when they sign the dotted line at Kirby, they knew what they were letting themselves in for, so go on son, show us what you can do.
And if you bottle it, there is a place waiting for you with Blackpool or Swansea.
Now that would destroy at least half of our youth players careers on the spot !!! LOL
DeleteNow David.
DeleteWe are carrying so many "players for the future" on some solid wages.
All I am proposing is that this players show us why they are thought to have promise
Hear hear Jawad, a welcome bit of positivity ;-)
DeleteI'm fairly flabergasted we didn't strengthen the midfield area, and perhaps more worringly didn't try to (unless you believe keita that we were in serious negotiations)...but we are fourth and are 13 points up on last season from corresponding fixtures so perhaps worth seeing how season pans out before throwing baby out with bath water...
We'll hopefully have agger and sakho returning soon and then johnson and enrique to follow and give us a boost as home straight approaches!
Thank you mate! As our motto says it aptly YNWA
DeleteI think eyebrows have been raised, mainly because of the week-end disappointment, a game simply should have won, and probably could of got away with the 1 nil win.
Deletewe are stable, but have injuries, hopefully some names below can give us the boost we need, when they back. Saturday will be a CRUNCH!!
Jawad/Luke,
DeleteI don't think just putting in youngsters that haven't kicked a ball in anger in the first team will do us any favours, but it does show up a lack of insight in the games when we 3 or 4 nil ahead when Brendan could've given some of the youngsters valuable experience.
It's not that everyone is being pessimistic, I think that fans realise that this is an opportunity that we shouldn't let slip through our fingers. One quality centre-midfield player would've made a huge difference and whether we are 13 points better than last season at this stage won't make the blindest bit of difference if don't make the Champions League next season, with no Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard a year older.
The Villa and WBA matches could've seen as well clear and the Arsenal match wouln't be so much of a definitive statement yet again., but as you say we are fourth, so it isn't all bad.
Keeping on missing out on transfers is makes the club look ridiculous, but the commercial arm are eating up deals like they are going out of fashion. We are just about to buy a stake in Aussie club Melbourne Victory (Man City just bought 80% of Melbourne Heart), if we showed just half the skill in transfers we'd be laughing.
Frustrated, at the start WBA certainly looked a bit more lively than us. We should have got this game by the neck. If we came back with a 1 nil win, we still would have proved we had something in the game, but may maybe Kolo view was blocked to be fair but still a risky pass, and the lack of concentration and no awareness, just not good enough in today’s game and in such a vital game. This pretty much costs us the game and slip of points.
ReplyDeleteAt times we counter attacked at some pace, but nothing to give the final touch of class. Second half we should have come out to get the second goal, but this was not the case, it was poor for a side who wants to play in the Champion league.
In my option Kolo should not be playing in every game, just too risky at the back.

DeleteAt last he's come out with a bit of truth!!
ReplyDeleteRodgers rules Liverpool out of title race
Wed, Feb 05 17:23 PM GMT
(Reuters) - Brendan Rodgers has ruled Liverpool out of the Premier League title race this season, although he believes his side will play a part in deciding where the trophy ends up.
Liverpool sit fourth in the league, eight points behind leaders Arsenal with 14 matches of the season remaining.
"I think for us, as a team, it's too early for that," Rodgers said in an interview with Sky Sports on Wednesday.
"I was at the Manchester City-Chelsea game the other night and I look at the squads they have, which they have built up over the last few years, and it's very difficult for us, even though we have competed right the way through the season.
I will only rule us out if we lose to Arsenal on Saturday – If we win we are only 5 points off the top – please remember that !!!
DeleteSo for all my fellow LFC members on here that think some of us are negative – there is a bit of positive talk – do not rule us out if we win on Saturday !!!!
Ha, good man David that's the spirit!
DeleteA day early, and i'm usurping Barry's usual role, but what are people's thoughts on team selection?
Think i'd go the same but with allen in for coutinho to give us a bit more ball retention and harrying in middle of the park. Difficult one to call as coutinho was brilliant against bluenoses in counter attacking system but think we'd maybe be a bit exposed against arsenal's superior quality and would be nice to have a strong option to come off the bench....
Totally agree with Luke – Joe Allen has to play in this game – Coutinho to come off the bench if required.
DeleteDavid – If Jose ruled Chelsea out, I think it is a very wise mind game for BR to say what he said. At the back of his mind like Jose he would have thought about as well. Remember the 11th commandment, “blessed are those who did not expect for they shall not be disappointed.”
DeleteI repeat again “win on Saturday and we are very much in the title race, draw or lose and we are out completely!!”
DeleteRemember the Great Bill Shankly.
DeleteMo
David Agree on that, I know we say every game is a crunch game to pick up points, but we did not loose our last game, so we still in this. We just need to work harder than ever to win on Saturday, and I just hope who ever is lined up does that.
DeleteI wonder if BR will play Toure?
Unfortunately we have no choice but to play Toure as Sakho and Agger will continue to be out through injury.
DeleteRodgers told the Liverpool Echo: “Daniel and Mamadou are not far off but I’m not expecting to have either of them back for the weekend.
Delete“They are not back in full training yet. Daniel will be back at some stage next week so he’s progressing really well, but Sakho is still a bit away from coming back training.”
Good article on some of our top loanees:
ReplyDeletehttp://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11096/9151803/liverpools-loan-stars
Thank you for the link ...and reiterating my optimism YNWA.
DeleteSuso and Assaidi for me would be the two I would bring back – I would try and get money for Borini
DeleteOff load Borini to Sanderland for more money.
DeleteAgreed
DeleteMo
Suso definitely the one I'm most hopeful of...his assist record is brilliant in a struggling team - he's been up there with like ron, messi, bale, fabregas and co all season in assist charts with the highly rated Koke the only other non household name....
DeleteI'd be happy for other two to either come back as squad players or move on for decent money. Also, got wisdom and robinson to come back and hopefully offer a bit more cover/competition in full-back positions after promising loans in the champ...
http://www.thisisanfield.com/2014/02/brendan-rodgers-discusses-top-four-objective-injuries-arsenal/
I think we have about 13 players out on loan, I'm sure we need to bring some back to the club, and develop them into the first team, this does effect our transfer market.
DeleteI think if there were one player that we would want to recall from loan immediately of the names below, it would be Suso. Having said that I think most players have done quite well out on loan.
DeleteNot too worried about Andre Wisdom – the last update I received about him was an article that Koppost sent through – given that Valerie is on the mailing list, I don’t think it appropriate to circulate. However, needless to say he seems to be really enjoying himself on and off the pitch!

ReplyDeleteIf Fulham call off the game tomorrow night because of the tube strike it will be an absolute disgrace. Arsenal are managing to go ahead with their match against the Scum so why should Fulham be allowed to let down thousands of travelling LFC fans who have already shelled out for train tickets down to London? If they can’t make arrangements to get the necessary staff to the ground it is an absolute joke!
ReplyDeleteOn the other cynical side Fulham could be wanting to call the game off for their players to recover from the Utd game at the weekend.
DeleteThe feeble excuse they are using is that Fulham have concerns over the potential impact that the strike may have on the ability of its safety staff to attend the ground in sufficient time and numbers to ensure that it is able to open the ground and effectively operate it, from the time that the gates are open to the public until the departure of all supporters.
Not having enough staff available to attend the ground in sufficient time and numbers would mean that the club would not be able to comply with the terms of its safety certificate and the fixture would be postponed and rescheduled for a later date.
This feeble excuse doesn’t wash with a lot of people as Fulham’s stadium is 25,700 and Arsenal’s is 60,361 so the game should go ahead as the Arsenal one will no doubt go ahead.
Fulham is trying to abide with provisions in its safety certificate which request that the necessary atmosphere must be created -
Delete•Public transport fully operational to ensure segregation of fans
•Police on hand to stem any outbreak of trouble
•Paramedics.
Arsenal have the luxury of location which Fulham does not.
Come on, Lets all look on the positive side, it means an extra day of rest before we do the Gooners again, I am already rubbing my palms.
Totally disagree – momentum is key to winning titles and trophies not playing for a whole week will have a negative effect in my opinion.
DeleteIt also gives those around us a chance to close the gap on 4th which psychologically won’t do us any favours, I’d rather keep our 3 point cushion and I personally hate having a “game in hand” and much prefer points on the board.
DeleteI'll be very annoyed as I'll plan to watch us do what Man Utd failed to do. I agree that points in the bag does it more than a game in hand. With Everton lacking a striker, it would be good if we could stretch the gap.
Delete
