In a massive game in our hunt for a Champions League place Rodgers named an unchanged starting eleven which to all concerned wasn't a major surprise, and as most expected heading in, Rodgers kept Coutinho inside to help Gerrard and Henderson in midfield while Suarez started on the left. Formations and tactics, though, don't much seem to matter in the face of colossal individual errors which cost us goals.
With the adverse weather conditions causing the postponement of a couple of Premiership games it would have been understandable if either team had conceded a goal because of it.
Not when you have Kolo Toure in your defence, he is a master of creating his own colossal individual errors, with him inexplicably passing to the invisible red shirt in our last away game vs WBA, he has even surpassed that incredible achievement this evening with an amazing slice into his own goal without any pressure on his clearance after 8 mins.
Not surprisingly the goal energised Fulham's overall performance and they looked like a side with something to fight for for much of the first half. The shock of conceding that poor goal made our whole team look disjointed and dishevelled.
All this was until one of the passes of the season after 41 minutes with our Captain Fantastic Gerrard's outside of his right foot landed like an Exocet missile perfectly through the Fulham defence onto Sturridges's left foot for a cool calm finish for his 8th goal in 8 games since returning from injury and his 16th goal this season.
Liverpool were much improved in the second, with Suarez being the main catalyst for the upturn in our tempo but there were still concerns—along with Sturridge drifting out of the game again following his goal, Sterling and Coutinho repeatedly missed simple passes, and Flanagan had probably his worst game since breaking into the lineup. But, on the whole, things were beginning to look up.
After Suarez hit the post, though with a brilliant piece of individual brilliance. We were again punished for failing to turn that improved play into goals when Skrtel and Flanagan conspired to turn the ball over to Kieran Richardson in front of goal. The Fulham player hammered it past Mignolet to put the hosts back in front.
The goal seemed to finally wake us up from our deep sleep and soon after Coutinho pulled us level again. A scary moment followed when Maarten Stekelenburg dived to smother a ball just as Suarez looked to kick it, knocking the Fulham keeper out and forcing a change between the sticks with reserve keeper David Stockdale coming on to replace him.
In the end it was far, far more difficult than it should have been, but the stoppage time penalty earned by good play from Daniel Sturridge and converted calmly by Steven Gerrard gave us the vital three points we so desperately needed in a match where to earn anything less would have gone down as failure.
Man of the match - Steven Gerrard
Our wonderful captain lead from the front and his celebration of the winning penalty showed what that goal means to our campaign and that pass ooooh that pass, just simply world class!
Critical eye
Kolo Toure is playing too many games many due to injuries to other defenders in the squad namely Agger and Sakho. The only thing that he did of any note was the comical moment when he knocked over fat ref Phil Dowd when running back to defend!
As a team we need to defend better as we are having to score three goals to win games which we are very capable of doing but should be wary that to have a say in this title race we need to cut out the silly mistakes.

Absolutely massive win for us – it was all going so badly wrong but our character brought us through which could be vital as we continue to close in on the leaders.
DeleteI think it is also fantastic that we are winning without Suarez having to score the goals to get us to where we want to be.
I am hoping with Agger now fit that Toure can watch the rest of our games from the comfort of the stands because he is a complete liability in our defence.
We are now inching our way towards having a major say in this title race, all I ask is that we win our league games focusing on them one at a time.
You guys may want us to put a full strength side out against Arsenal in the FA Cup match but I want to protect Suarez, Sturridge and Gerrard for the league so would rest all three bringing in Aspas, Teixeira and Allen respectively on Sunday.
Great resistance for a game that looked dead lock. I did not get to see the game, but heard it on the radio. At the same time watching Man U v Arsenal, hoping for a nil nil draw, which worked to perfection and and SG put the icing on the cake.
DeleteDavid - I understand what you are saying, but I think we have to bag in all our options of winning something this season, plus that vital 4th spot or above.
I im sure, Aspas, and Allen can do a good job.
Our defence was shocking last night but Mignolet should have came and collected that cross which led to Fulam’s second, the guy can stop a shot undoubtedly but for a Premier League first choice keeper he has a shockingly poor command of his penalty area. Great to hear that we’ll be getting some defensive players back from injury soon, we need to get our act together at the back if we’re going to finish strong.
DeleteGlen and Agger back, may sound like the January signing we did not have. Boy little boy –Teixeira for his first senior game is looking a real deal! Wow what a night and what a result. I am sure we would have learnt our lesson. 11 points clear of MU and 8 clear of our noisy neighbour 3 clear of 5th place Spurs, the statistic reading good. All forgiven Kolo because the calamity did result in lost of 2 points.
DeleteDid not see the own gaol, but heard it was comical!,
DeleteAs David says, this was massive win for us. Job done! Always love going to the Cottage when Liverpool are in town, scousers from near and far bubbling around trying to get tickets and also creating a really good atmosphere. This is a new Fulham side – about 6 changes to the team in the last 2 weeks that have been put together and they have a lot of commitment and desire. What was pleasing is that we showed the fight and determination to stay in the game, unlike at West Brom where you felt the longer the game went on the more likely it was for them to score.
DeleteQuite right to nominate the Stevie “Still Got It” Gerrard as man of the match because he showed all faces of his game and worked very intelligently in partnership with Henderson, often switching positions to offer a more attacking option. His pass to Sturridge for the goal was the best pass I’ve seen live since Couthino’s pass to Sturridge at Craven Cottage in the fixture last season. Our attacking players are really amazing with the ball – they hold it really well in some very tight situations.
Now onto the Kolo – the Fulham fans loved him so his goal was certainly comical to him. They mocked him from after the goal onwards and it seemed to affect him even more. He was under constant pressure, whether there was any player near him or not. If the ground could have swallowed him up, he’d have been more than happy. He didn’t want the ball at all, pointing to players to pass it to someone else. His performance was unacceptable and he played a part in both goals. I took the opportunity to look at the pitch at half time and to be fair, it wasn’t in the best of conditions. However, I really didn’t understand why Torre felt couldn’t stay on his feet to make a simple clearance instead of poking it into his own net. For the second goal, though it didn’t show it on MOTD, Torre lost possession by somehow heading the ball backwards and turning over possession to them, followed by the catastrophe with Skrtel. He seems to have totally lost his confidence. Interesting to note Aggers’ return.
Job done.
Very good report from our Liverpool spy in the Fulham crowd last night.
DeleteWe just need to continue with the momentum in our league games as best as we can and you never know at the end of the season Gerrard can retire with the league trophy as his swansong !!! LOL
Livi, very good read thanks
DeleteLivi Good job on Reconnaisance.
DeleteThe return of Agger and Johnson would add another dimension to our game, Time to give Toure a seat on the bench, the mistakes are beginning to cost us.
Kudos to Brendan and the team
Tasty result last night! Bit dramatic! Saw it on MOTD! and on LFC.
DeleteJan Thomson
Jawad, Toure needs to watch from the stands for the rest of the season.
DeleteDavid, Toure might just be sitting next to Livi at the Reds game.LOL!!
DeleteKarl wouldn’t sit next to him after the amount of abusive names he has called him in the past few games – Kolo so clumsy he would fall off his chair with the abuse Karl would give him !!! LOL
DeleteI think its fair to say, he's clumsy!!
Deletehe can watch the rest of the season on BT Sport!
Careful, he might kick the TV.
Deleteor blame the remote LOL!!!
DeleteHe'll kick the remote but miss it and instead kick the tv.
DeleteMo
And then say it was the TV’s fault – never his fault !!!
DeleteAll this is now in the past. Lets now focus on Sunday's game.

I can’t recall SG ever seeing SG taken off shirt for scoring a goal. That action spoke volume of what that goal meant to the guy.
ReplyDeleteI think this may be because the Fulham goal scorer took his shirt off and SG thought "I can do better".
