Torres, Would You Have Him Back?

In Chelsea's last five games, which included two loses against Liverpool, Fernando Torres played a role as extra, coming on in either the last quarter or last third of matches.  With AVB seemingly stuck on Drogba leading the line Torres seems to a bit part player at the moment suffering from a touch of stage fright in the playing theatre.

He is too good a player for this to persist for much longer, but if body language is anything to go by, he looks distinctly unhappy with the situation. And I guess as a World Class striker if Solomon Kalou being called up off the bench before you, something must be in the manager's mind.

If hyperthetically, the chance arises to re-sign him should we knowing that we don't have depth in that department?

  2. For me Torres has lost a yard of pace that made him really dangerous. Plus he’s a sulk and his attitude stinks so it’s a no from me. I think that we unloaded him at exactly the right time. It is a pity that we went straight out and blew all that cash on a Northern Ale Tank with the turning circle of a double decker bus but you live and learn.

King Kenny – you messed up big-time on that decision !!!!

  4. Neither seem to have much chance of playing in the Champions league this season!!

I didn’t think Carroll was that bad on Monday although what probably escaped the camera was the number of times when he seem to stand just a couple of yards away from Suarez, who didn’t seem to appreciate him being too close. What Carroll needs to start doing again, is what he used to do before he joined us – lead the line, be a goal threat, and difficult to manage.

  5. David I agree - more to the matter is the money we spent on the pony! In the first place he was never worth the £35 Mark, would likes of Manu, Chelsea, Arsenal gone out rushing to sign his signature, so why the hell we go out and get him, he was nothing special to raise eyebrows!

Its a Big mistake, and we paying for it.

  6. Once again totally agree with you Baz, think key issue is his attitude as he looks like he's unwilling to adapt his game to compensate for his lost yard of pace. He was showing signs at OT and when he scored in game after before getting sent off but think it would be a back-ward step to sign a player who made his desire to leave so apparent and confounded it with stupid comments about joining a big club....

I am sure there are much better options for striking reinforcements out there and hopefully we'll do a bit more due diligence than we did with Carroll!

  7. On free transfer with £100k per week drop in pay yes for me. Liverpool made him and Liverpool can equally reinvent him. But he would have to apologise big for the fan to forgive him for that youthful exuberant thing about Chelsea being a big club.

  9. I think Torres was a great loss to our club regardless he did not want to play for us.

Many Liverpool fans were upset and angry that Torres had left.

However, spending £35 million on a striker who is not even world class let alone class in the Premiership and at the time was available to sign, we seemed to jump for the Carroll.

Given it time, he still now has not produced and questions need to be asked on his quality, ability upfront.

We did not buy him to sit on the bench, and come on now and then. His big lad and his should be using his strength and ground to scare defenders, but his doing none of this.

How much time are we going to give him, should we sell early him and move to another striker?

It defiantly shows Torres is unsettled at Chelsea too. If you ask the question of bringing him back to Liverpool, taking away the maths, Liverpool can reinvent him, and motivate him.

The quality we need upfront, strikers who can create their own goals, something out of nothing.

  10. His heart had left the club - he no longer deserved our totally faith and his comments about the club were a bit too intense and hurtful to just bring him back like it never happened.

So my verdict on this matter is NO !!!

  11. I think whether we bring Torres back or indeed another striker King Dalglish seems to presenting a broad bat to any questions...

"We did miss some chances [during the weekend’s 1-0 win against QPR], yes, but the goalkeeper saved a lot of them too.

"Do I feel the need to go out and do something about that? Aye, whichever side comes along here next, we'll ask them to come without a keeper. That's the best way to do it, isn't it?

"Irrespective of what I say, it's not going to stop speculation we are going out in January to sign Joe Bloggs up front, or whoever. I don't need to say anything."

  12. You can't blame the man altogether for the goal drought because all the goal keepers visiting Anfield this season try everything within their pwer to become instant hero. I am sure if there is ststistics on the number of saves keepers have made, we will top that chart.

  13. David sent me the following link http://joescouse.blogspot.com/2011/12/hit-woodwork-league-table.html which highlights the fact that we have hit the woodwork fifteen times. This only focuses on the obvious that we haven’t hit the back of the net enough. Bolton are bottom of the league and yet we’ve scored two less goals and just proves how much we owe our position in the league to our defensive capabilities and robust midfield with Lucas at the forefront in which we have conceded only 13 goals. We also have also scored exactly the same number of goals as Stoke, but more importantly 16 less than third place Chelsea which equates to 10 less in the goal difference charts.

To delve slightly deeper we have scored our 18 Premiership goals from 203 attempts on goal and the less than clinical nature of our play in terms of goal taking is borne out from the fact we have only tucked away one of the three penalties awarded to us. Obviously, it’s not helping that Carroll is not firing on all cylinders, but the fact that even Suarez has only scored 5 goals in 59 attempts a shots to goal ratio of 8.5% you can see how profligate Liverpool have been in front of goal.

Whether Torres comes back or we bring in someone else we need options and we need to get Carroll firing. The other players also need to step up in the scoring stakes as right now we cannot imagine a Liverpool without Suarez and we need a different type of striker who can run of the shoulder of the last defender and change the style of our player or if needed play with Suarez or even lead the line. Every successful team needs goal scoring midfielders and Adam and hopefully the return of Gerrard in addition to Maxi, Bellamy and Kuyt returning score sheet will increase the scoring momentum.
