LFC News 29 November 2011
Newcastle
Crunch game tomorrow with Andy Carroll, even more under the spotlight following King Kenny's attack on the press in which is basically accused them of causing problems for the young Liverpool striker through their vilification of his alleged out of control private life. Let's home the 'Big Man' can ram the words down the critics throats. It would be nice if Stewart Downing et al could also come to the party because as understandable as is to blame the £35 million striker, we need match winners starting with from the frontmen, but going right back to the defence. Tony Evans of the Times provided much needed support from the media ranks stating that Liverpool were going along the right light since the return of King Kenny. Good luck to the lads!
Rafa Benitez
Rafa Benitez showed his love for the city knows no bounds as he gave a further £2,800 to add to the £96,000 he initially donated to the Hillsborough Family Support Group (HFSG) through the Montse Benitez Foundation which helped pay for the administration of the group. To see the full quotes from Rafa and from HFSG see the story on Rafa's own website.
January sales
With the January transfer window about to be thrown open, Liverpool have been linked with a plethora of players such as the following: Darren Bent, Porto's Jorge Fucile (a full-back I hasten to add) and their midfield duo Fernando Reges and Beram Kayal, and strikers Athletico Bilbao's Fernando Llorente and Edinson Cavani.
Most of these links are just pie in the sky, but if push came to shove, for me it would be either Llorente or Cavani because the need is greater for a quality striker and possibly a holding midfield player to bolster the squad.
In the future we can address the need for another winger and a creative midfielder, but right now creating chances is not the problem.
LFC - Creativity and Chances
dedlfc sent through the following on the problems behind our lack of goals taken from anfieldindex.com and at times makes facinating reading.

All I would like to add is that I feel the need for another name Roberto Soldado left out by Kop-post is even more stronger with a record of 58 goals in the last 110 games for 2 different clubs- I think it is crazy to overlook his credentials.
ReplyDeleteI take your point that Saldado is an undoubted talent, but the reason why I picked out Llorente and Cavani is because firstly Llorente is in discussions with Bilbao over a new contract and although they sound fairly bullish he has been at the club for 11 years and as such there is always the possibility and second, Cavani's agent is trying to drum up a possible move away - which is why I said I felt certain other moves were pie in the sky for us and I include Soldado in that because it would take a prodigious bid to overtake pontential suitors.
ReplyDeleteThe only way I see Cavani coming to us is if Suarez and Coates can use their persuasive powers to convince him that we are going to be a force under Dalglish. If they can that would be a great addition to the strikeforce.
ReplyDeleteThe stats are comprehensive and well analysed. Some of this is just common sense, for example, if you keep kicking the ball to the centre of the goal, you are less likely to score because thats where the keeper is! But on the other hand, it goes into some of the stats that I like - other than Suarez, Enrique is the player that beats players and puts the ball in the box. As highlighted, the search might be for a winger that can beat players, create chances as well as score their fair share of goals, maybe 10 a season. Had Downing scored 4 goals to date, I think we would probably look at him differently but whilst he hasn't and people are not converting the chances he has created, there will continue to be doubters.
ReplyDeleteHopefully, Stevie will start to have an impact on our creativity and conversion rates. When I talk about the pace of the game, he did just that when he came on the pitch against Blackburn. I know he gave the ball away on a couple of occasions, but he gave a truly outstanding perfomance in other areas. When I saw him playing I just thought "that pass I just delivered was good, but the fact that I was available for the return pass, was even better - you may have heard of it - a simple one-two." "I'm going to take a free kick now - look, its cleared the front post and in fact I've just placed it on the head of the smallest player in our team today". Welcome back!
Now LFC will no doubt be looking at stats like this in their search to fill the gaps - Suarez is our attacking creative player not our out and out goalscorer or striker who was bought to play alongside Torres, perhaps in a similar way to what Stevie did.
I think for now, we need to address up front, more, with a more ruthless striker, to partner or not with Sureze.
ReplyDeleteSaldado at age 26, scored 32 goals in 47 has plenty to give to us, and stats show what a world class player he just is.
Llorente plays in a bigger league, and for a bigger National team, but may have stronger, so probably a better option, though links with likes of Real Madrid.
Florentino has a £36 million Euros release fee, and Real Madrid are also the most likely to pay that, don’t see us doing that.
Both will rise but lorente will be wasted with Madrid, behind ronaldo, higuain and benzema, and may not get regular appearances, unless they sell.
Don’t forget we have already blown £35milliion on a striker, so we really need to work on him too.
Pies in the sky do the talking…..
