New Season, Age Old Problems

No matter how good a squad, most teams, apart from Man City, have a first eleven and in the last few weeks Liverpool seemed to have found theirs whether by design or accident with Bellamy's pace and understanding with Suarez and the experience and movement of Kuyt and Maxi we seem to fallen on a winning formula.

So for King Kenny to leave out Maxi after he had bagged two in three and against opposition which he'd scored a hat-trick on our previous appearance at Craven Cottage was disappointing, especially when up against aside with only two victories all season.

Andy Carroll will come good with a side built around him to accentuate his attributes, but among this team and formation we are prone to play longer balls and the lack of width seemed to make no sense with the 'big man' in the box. With his back often to the goal the play seemed to grind to a holt once the ball was passed into his feet. Right now he is a not a first eleven player/starter and is beginning to hinder Liverpool’s progress as seems one step forward tow steps back when he starts.

To say this was a disappointing result, even after Jay Spearing's unlucky sending-off, is saying it mildly.  We had enough possession and chances to have won the game conclusively and I don't buy the fact that we've been unlucky with hitting the post more than any other team, we have just not good enough in front of goal. We now languish five points off a Champions League place and not to want to sound negative with only one defeat in fourteen, but it just shows the damage the home draws have caused.

The goal itself was disappointed to say the least.  If Glen Johnson had been left on the ground by Dembele then one can only say fair enough, because I am sure that he’ll do that to many better defenders in the future, but for Danny Murphy to cut inside and leave him stranded and get off a shot was not what you expect when he should be showing him the outside at the very least.  But in say that Pepe is a top class keeper and they all make mistakes and he saved us many an occasion, but he made a similar mistake against Spurs and last season against Arsenal which cost us a win.

The QPR game must be used a state of intention.  There is no point beating the Chelsea’s of this world and competing on an even keel with the Manchester clubs and then fallen back to our weaknesses of the past few seasons and losing or drawing against sides we should by all intents and purposes be beating if we have any intentions of a top four place.

  2. First of all I am fuming at the ref's poor decision to send off Spearing at such a vital time of that game last night.

Secondly, I don't care what the rest of you think about this player anymore I want him out - we have paid £35m for him and are not getting our money's worth - basic set-ups he is missing - when you pay £35m you expect pace, power and clinical finishing - not what we have paid for cumbersome, non-intelligent running and not busting a gut to get into the area to be on the end of crosses. I am totally fed up with waiting for the real Andy Carroll to show up when you see down the East Lancaster Road another player for a similar fee Aguero showing class, speed and finishing ability.

If any of you think you will get the best out of this limited lamp-post Carroll you are being very delusional - he is not good enough for this level of the game and if we have any aspirations for the top 4 this season we will need to go with players with speed and intelligence and movement like Suarez, Bellamy and the versatility and ability to arrive in the box late like Maxi. Mark my words Carroll will not get us 10 goals this season and as a £35m player its just extremely poor.

I am fuming with the defeat because again everyone else wins and we again drop points. We can beat any team on our day but we consistently fail to beat the average to lower level sides.

The Lucas factor has to be looked at in January we may have to look at getting the quality Newcastle defensive midfielder Cheik Tiote and they can have back their former number 9 Andy Carroll.

  3. David I can't agree less, from day one I said Andy never worth £10m less alone the £35m we wasted on him. He couldn't even scored penalty, how then can he scores from open play. Each time we started Andy, we ended up struggling and that is not a good thing. He had 10 times the number of games Maxi got this season, his goal scoring ratio is way behind that of Maxi. I stand to be corrected on this, I feel the King could have started the game with Maxi and Kuyt while Spearing and Andy should have started from the bench. Very very disappointing result. Our reliable Reina had a very bad day in the Office and he knew it. How the ref ruled out Suarez's wonder goal for offside that beat my imagination. I am equally surprise the King never mentioned anything about appealing against the red card, because in my opinion that was not a red card offend. I could not see how on a 50:50 challenge the guy got the ball and get red carded for it.

It was very obvious that Lucas has left a very big vacuum in our mid-field. Fulham players had a field day enjoying play, something Lucas could have cleared up all day long.

  4. Hi All

Obviously we're all gutted about the result last night. We were the better team but were undone by the sending off. We'll definitely appeal because it was almost a carbon copy of Jack Rodwells Red Card against us in the Mersey Derby where he won the ball but followed through to the man and Everton successfully appealed that card so the precedent is there.

Sometime it's just not your night and we made a bunch of chances but yet again the post and the bar and a few very good saves from the opposition keeper kept the ball out of the net. Pepe made a mistake but he's saved our bacon so many times that I can't hold last nights error against the fella.

We have a QPR at home at the weekend and all we can hope for is a good reaction by the players. I agree with David that defensive midfield is going to have to get looked at in December. Even before Jay got sent off last night Fulham with Dempsey and Dembele were having an absolute field day between our midfield and defence. I wouldn't mind seeing Jonjo given a shot in defensive midfield role on Sat.

On the bright side last night I thought Henderson was really good.

  5. I agree with pretty much all you say there Baz, hard not too feel a bit pessimistic when looking at the table and seeing spurs 8 points ahead with a game in hand but we were really unlucky (story of our season) last night and aside from allowing fulham too much space in front of our back four and again lacking clinical edge in front of goal there wasn't a great deal wrong with our performance...

Thought henderson, adam and enrique all had really good games and that is encouraging as Carroll is the only of our recent signings that I have major doubts about. I didnt think he had a particularly terrible game last night and don't think he can be faulted for his work rate but I just find myself in unusual position of agreeing with Gary Neville that we look a better team without him and that his style of play isn't suited to ours. With that in mind I think there could be an argument for taking a massive hit and off-loading him to bring in a more mobile partner for suarez....

Thought referee was an absolute joke last night, suarez got nothing all game and ferguson's smear after we played them is having the desired effect. Think the red was extremely harsh but can't see FA overturning it as unlike rodwell both his feet were off the ground after he played the ball. Not a red for me but agree with Kenny's comment that main problem is lack of consistency...

  6. A agree with the above, very good points.

I am fed up with Andy Carroll. He is just not good enough to be picked for the first team.
He is not new to the Premiership, so no excuses for not playing well in each game.

He’s movement is not sharp, and he really is no threat up front. I understand this is something you learn but his had plenty of games under his boot to get him going.

Like David said when we brought him in for increadable £35, he needs to bag 20 goals a season or more…to show his worth.

We had enough possetion and chances to win the game, but killing the game off upfront is very poor, and we really need to start controlling this NOW!

With out a consistency run getting into top four may be fading.

  7. Having being bigged up by King Kenny in the week before the game, I don't see why he wasn't selected.

  8. Yeah, I was surprised he didn't get the nod too - especially as I had a few quid with paddypower at 100/1 on him scoring another hat-trick at Fulham :(

  9. I was at the game on Monday, I haven't watched it on tv yet (need more time to recover) but we just looked comfortable but without the
penetration around the box. I think the central midfielders and strikers need to make themselves a bit more available as an option to the players on the flanks. Quite often Bellamy had the ball but nobody to pass to.

Maxi must be absolutely fuming! I read an interview with Charlie Adam who said that since Maxi's last goal, he has been in good spirits,
demonstrating how he scored an hatrick against Fulham last season - step by step. I think the players will also be shocked that he didn't get
    the nod.

  10. Good to see Livi has finally started to change his views on Maxi!!! LOL

Maxi is a very under-rated player but he is a midfield player that knows how to find space stealthily in the opposition penalty area which is a very fine art.

  11. Absolutely right David. All of the players I rubbished, and some of you
guys may have jumped on my bandwagon, have proved me wrong. Lucas (LFC
player of the season), Kuyt (fantastic 2nd half of season), Maxi (had
    previously been missing in action).

Let me say now - Andy Carroll is rubbish - so no doubt he will prove me
    wrong!
