A Tale Of Two Halves

By Kop-Post

The instinctive reaction having sat through the game was to denigrate the performance as inept. Having bought in £45 million of new talent in the close season the expectations levels increased on the back of King Kenny’s Midas touch.  But, stone cold realism and analytic reasoning lends one to see the performance for what is was that of a team with four new starters showing enough potential to recognise that the first-half performance was encouraging

If ever there was a game of two halves then this was it.  With Downing, Adam and Suarez prompting and probing, Liverpool were dominant almost from the kick-off.  Surprisingly, with the ink barely dry on his contract Dalglish started with Enrique left-back and with Henderson out of position on the right of midfield.  Funnily enough, talking to a Sunderland fan post match, he felt Henderson is a quality player who will been seen at his best in centre-midfield and one felt for the lad who seemed like a fish out of water.

Downing looked dangerous, with one mazy run from left to right leaving defenders flailing in his wake and ending with a scorching drive against the bar. He supplied Carroll the ammunition he and all Liverpool fans had been craving for – Carroll had 6 attempts on goal, failing to find the target, but essentially he was in the position where a No 9 should be.  He held the ball well showing some depth touches and the ability to bringing others into play.  Adam, given room to play by the tenacious Lucas, had his range finder spectacles on linking up nicely with Suarez.

The Jekyll and Hyde performance was difficult to understand, especially as it was a complete transformation from the very first minute after the break.  The balance of the side was compromised once the tired Suarez went off with Kuyt joining Carroll and Downing coming off the flanks in a more central position.  We lost the midfield in the second-half, hence our defence looked decidedly uncomfortable and the team as a whole faded dramatically.

What is did show as Livi (blog follower), keeps reminding me is we need different types of players, rather than a plethora of  central midfielders and it’s hard to disagree with his assertion when a quality midfield player like Meireles who does most of his damage through the centre ends up playing on the left.

All in all an encouraging performance (let’s not mention the penalty) with a lot to work on.  A dominant centre-half, and another wide man to provide stimulus, creativity and especially pace which we lacked is hopefully be in Kenny’s agenda.

  1. After bringing in 5 new players and giving four of them debuts in the first game of the season the start of the game we were all optimistic that our season would start with victory.

The surprise inclusion of our star striker Luis Suarez added to our bright hopes and when he was brought down by Richardson in the 7th minute we thought that it was the start of a special day.

Suarez's penalty would have got conversion points in a Rugby International - it had more chance of hitting the River Mersey than the back of the net.

Luckily he picked his confidence up and then delightfully flicked a header from a Charlie Adam free-kick after 12 mins - this led to a dominate period of play where we also had a goal disallowed by Carroll and a mazy run by Downing culminating in a great shot hitting the bar and going over.

The first 35 mins was totally Liverpool and then we lost the midfield and Sunderland came back into the game and got a deserved equaliser midway through the second half through Larsson.

Very disappointed that we were unable to take advantage of the good start and felt that King Kenny should have played Martin Kelly at right back if he was fit because he has shown the greater potential and has more experience.

I was also surprised that King Kenny left Dirk Kuyt out of the starting line up for Henderson to play out of position - I also found out today that Enrique was forced to play because Aurelio was injured again !!!

Disappointed with the draw at home but saw glimpses of great promise for the season.

  2. Cheers KP, spot on with your report there mate.

Having been slightly concerned that it will take us a while to settle this season I was absolutely buzzing after first half performance, loads to be encouraged about, with adam looking almost alonso-esque with his controlling the tempo of the game, Lucas continuing his ball winning from last season, Suarez looking amazing as usual and big Andy Carroll showing some great touches and link up play.

Just have to hope that second half performance was down to fitness issues although the tendency to lump it long to carroll continues to be a concern.

Overall thought Downing, Adam and Enrique all looked they will definitely improve us over the course of the season main concern for me is getting Carroll scoring regularly and still got slight concerns about adam's defensive qualities....

A victory next week would be a great boost!

  3. I was excited about our first opening game and seeing Liverpool play four of our new buys, and making their debut.

I found first half was full of encouragement; Adam looked extremely comfortable in midifiled, controlling the centre with quality range of passing, and vision. We continued our play on the ground, quick accurate passing, but with seven attempts on target, we could have done much more.

Second half Sunderland worked harder and broke our defence with a deserved goal. The goal was a bad error of unmarked man and we were punished. We cannot afford errors like this anymore, we need to bring back leadership in defence.

Next game Must be 3 points.

  4. Well I think we’ll all be disappointed to have let 2 points slip but on another day with another ref we would have won it comfortably (why didn’t Charlie Adam take the penalty???). Sunderland are a decent outfit and will be looking to press for top 7 and a European place this year so a draw is no disgrace and we’ve got our first point on the board. Chelsea and Arsenal drawing also softens the blow and United’s £20 mil keeper looks like a numpty.

I saw the extended highlights and we looked good in the first half and were moving the ball around well. Once they got level due to a schoolboy error from young Flanno our confidence subsided and they got back into the game. I think Kenny made an error in starting Henderson instead of Kuyt. What did you’s all make of it?

  5. I said last week 1-1. The game proved no real difference in the team from last season. In fact, considering it's a new team, managing to run out of ideas by half time is dreadful. A couple of flashes from Adam and Downing were encouraging, hopefully they can only get better and our front two look sharp and give them proper service (a decent winger Kenny) and they will bag a lot of goals this season! But you have to win home games against opposition like that if you have ideas about getting in Champions Lge, based on that performance it's UEFA next season. As for Henderson, Christ knows why we signed him and to leave out last seasons top scorer is completely ridiculous, manager to blame for that. Although Chelsea drew they looked pretty good and again Utd pulled out an unlikely win, same mentality even with new players.

  6. Very disappointed as well – agree with your views as regards not starting Kuyt – made my full comments on the blog site.

Chelsea and Arsenal drawing helped us a little but we need to win our home games if we have any aspirations to succeed this season.

Also we do not have the distraction of European footie so the players really need to give 150% to get the wins we need.

  7. Leon I agree.

very disappointing! We should have won our first opening game with power and volume in all areas. We should have killed them off at home ground!

Man U will pull all stops to win
    Chelsea look all attacking side
Arsenal with out the Nastri and Fab, still looked pretty good.

If we blow the next two games, a realistic 4th place be 7 place!, you could say its early to say that, but we need to bag in points from the start.

  8. Very worrying that so many of our players faded so badly during the second half, begs the question about how successful conditioning was during pre-season. The lack of energy of our players let Sunderland back into the game.

Kenny needs to address the deficiency on the right side of midfield only time we offered anything is when Downing moved across. Overall though the game should have been won on the first half performance, a draw isn’t the worst result although puts a bit more pressure on getting a result against a disintegrating Arsenal next week.

  9. So very true LP. I had the displeasure of sitting next to KopPost during the match, opposite him on the way home and he also rang me on yesterday continue to tell me the same thing. And if that wasn’t enough, he also wrote it on the blog. ;))) He also rang me on my office line, I thought he was going to repeat himself again but it was to tell me that he’s just got a new job. Phew! :-)

KopPost said exactly what you said above, but he’s said it to me at least 20 times even though I agree! :-)

  10. Well our over rated £35m man goal disallowed should have stood. Adam should have taken the pen. I am not sure why KD started the Jordan and Jon in place of season player like Aurelio and Kurt. We should not 1.1 draw with Sunderland eventhough they 10 or eleven players. Wes Brown cleaning up everything for them that is sad.

I am certain the best we can get out from Emirates come Saturday is a draw. It is just not looking good!!!!!!!!

  11. Why can't we go for Adam Johnson seeing he will be surplus to Man City requirement when they sign Nasari?

  12. I agree but they won’t sell any of their players.

  13. The fact that we were sitting there watching made it all the more galling, It was like a lethargy had set in during half-time.and it was so bad Liverpool fans were leaving 10 minutes before the end!

We lost all balance with Meireles being brought on to play on the left, Downing in a central role and literally know one on the right, which left Flanagan exposed. By the end, they were by-passing our midfield and running at our defence at will. One body swerve from Sessegnon past Agger nearly caused the old guy in front us with the Shankly top on to join Bill and Bob Paisley up in heaven with involuntary convulsions!

Let's hope it was an aberration.

  15. Agreed our boys get tired in the second half but I believe the ref gave Sunderland a helping hand. Think of what it would have been if Richardson was sent off in the first 5 minutes and Sunderland had to play with 10 men for 85 minutes. Think of what Downing cross bar shaking shot would have done had it went in. Andy's disallowed goal would have done a world of good, all these event took place in the first half.

With our £20m for their toothless Jordan, Sunderland went and get themselves 10 players. Wes Brown for £1m, I think O'Shea was something like £2.5m or £3m at the most and of course the rest of buy one get one free.

  16. Have to agree with Barry, whilst there was obviously some worrying aspects to the second half display the fact that so many players visibly tired suggests we can hope for more of the very encouraging first half type performance as the season wears on.

Downing, Enrique and Adam all showed enough positive signs for me to suggest that we will be a lot stronger than last year. It's also important to remember that despite signing in jan that was prob only carroll's 10th start for us and it is going to take time for the team to get used to playing to his strenghts which they did in first half and resist the urge to hit it long to him when the opposition apply pressure....

I'm sure kenny and steve clarke will have learned a lot from that second half and hopefully, the next time we find ourselves under a bit of pressure they will have a better response than we saw on saturday....

  17. lets move on

  18. Arsenal at Emirates always seems to be a tough game for us. even though they will be w/o up to 6-7 of their regular starters, I still think it'll be tough to walk out of there with 3pts. Really impressed with Enrique, cant wait till Johnson gets fit to see us attacking both flanks. Kuyt & Kelly in for Hendo & Flanno, and if we're going to keep Aquaman & give him a squad #...at least get him on the bench, he's class.
