Players like Sterling and Silva must be blowing a sigh of relief with the movement out of the club – one often wonders if this negative transfer policy hindered the progress of Pacheco and stopped players such as Jay Spearing coming through earlier than they otherwise would have done.
The fallout from Aquilani’s transfer and the increased contracts handed out to fringe players El Zhar, Deggan, and Insua amongst others has moulded the transfer policy of John Henry and the Fenway Sports Group into buying players who will have a sell on value. Therefore, the recent strong rumour of Dalglish interests in Bellamy is not surprising as it seems more a strategic push by Liverpool to bring in a quality support striker who will hit the ground running and provide the team with experience, goals and at a push provide the option to play out wide with his pace (which we still lack in critical areas) and an ability to beat defenders in critical forward positions.
Craig Bellamy - rumours of a Liverpool return (Image: Daily Mail)
His potential signing maybe seen as a negative move by some, but the thinking is understandable and I for one advocated a move for Forlan before his recent move to Inter Milan for the knock down price of 5 million euros, especially with his understanding with Suarez and the fact that he has improved exponentially from his time at Man United. His understanding with Suarez and moves and the potential acquisition of Coates would have, I believe, placed Liverpool in a no lose situation.
Criticism that our transfer policy is misguided is unfounded. Liverpool like many clubs outside Champions League positions are and will find it difficult to pick up world class players. The simple fact is that top class players want to play in the Champions League and as such with the footballing world focusing on the annual tournament it makes complete sense to build for the future. Since January, Liverpool have spent over £100 million pounds (approximately £50 million net if we take into account the Torres and Babel transfers), but considering we finished three places behind Man City and they have spent a similar amount just in preseason with Man United spending over £50 million, we know that we cannot match the spending of the top three, thus it is incumbent on the club to spend wisely and to make sure that the club’s scouting system is unparalleled.
Andy Carroll is being pilloried as some supporter’s believe he doesn’t possess the prerequisite skills to fit into Liverpool’s free-flowing play which destroyed Bolton. His signing, alongside that of Suarez, was at a time when the club had only one recognised striker in Ngog, with Kuyt used more as a wideman. Carroll arrived injured and was patently unfit during the latter half of the season. His starring role against Man City shows just how dangerous he can be when given the right service and that he offer a different mode of attack to the pass and move which has been accentuated by the magnificent movement of Suarez. His still appears, disappointingly short of fitness and just as with most strikers short of goals, confidence is a considerable part of their make-up and is almost certainly why Dalglish appears to be going out of his why to publicly to be support the young striker.
If we do finish in the top four this to my mind would be ahead of schedule and no mean feat. It would have be done by re-introducing a sensible transfer structure and a move back to the ‘boot room’ values of Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley, Reuben Bennett, Ronnie Moran and Joe Fagan, which Kenny was schooled under as a player and intertwined with the economic common sense and values of the Fenway Sports Group.
So thats El Zhar, Poulsen, Ayala, Konchesky, Jovanovic, Insua, Pacheco, Aquaman, Kyrgiakos & hopefully J. Cole all either gone or rumored to be gone by tomorrow night. If true, then that's some good work from FSG (would be brilliant work if they could somehow add Degen's name to that list!)
ReplyDeleteCarroll will come good imo. Just seems hes trying too hard and not letting the game come to him (kinda like J Cole at the beginning of last yr) and us pelting long balls to his head at every chance we get cant be helping.
Don't know much about Coates but he looks a good prospect. Would be over the moon if the "Gyan to LFC' rumors come true although I always thought the door was shut on that move when a certain Uruguayan come into the squad last winter....and now we have 2! Still hoping though! Silly season is coming to an exciting end like usual. Here's to 1 eye on SSN and 1 eye on the job tomorrow!
Totally agree with your assessment. As you say, we have moved quite a few out and since your comment, also leaving are Phillip Degan (contract mutually terminated), Eccleston and Joe Cole on loan (see full list below). But, I guess more controversially for Liverpool supporters and fans alike will be the sudden departure of Raul Meireles literally minutes before the close of the window.
ReplyDeleteAnyone, as I was, at the game against Bolton on Saturday will realise the affection which Meireles is held at Anfield. He walked round the edge of the pitch to get to the changing room before the game and one felt the applause he was greeted was not just a recognition of his efforts last season to help bring the club back on an equilibrium, but with rumours abound that the club have been looking to offload him, the applause felt like a rendition of the James Brown song ‘Please, Please, Don’t Go!’
Reflecting on the speed of the transfer one almost felt it had already been pre-conceived. To my way of thinking, in the cold light of day I have no problem with the transfer, even if it is hard to reconcile oneself to the fact that Jordan Henderson started before Meireles in all Liverpool’s games, but yet it was Meireles undoubted quality in tandem with Suarez which unlocked the door in Arsenal game.
The fact that he was not given the improved deal he was promised when he first arrived is something only the club can answer if there are to be any recriminations.
The transfer fits with the club’s new transfer policy especially since King Kenny and Camolli began to work in tandem and for those who believe that Dalglish doesn’t have much say in transfers the Bellamy deal smacks definitely as one of his strategic decisions. Granted Liverpool have made 1.5 million on Meireles in little over a year, but the fact is we have sold to a top quality player to a rival. While the Torres deal is well documented and Benayoun was a fallout between manager and player, this is the third time we have sold to our rivals and we could quite easily have held on to him ‘Fergie Style’ as with Heinze than improve a rival team.
Selfishly, it is hard to see where he fits into Chelsea as the Lampard position seems a natural fit and it maybe a square pegs in round holes scenario, although Villas-Boas seems very capable of being ruthless.
As I said in the blog above I have no qualms about Dalglish wanting to bring an experience striker as woe betide Suarez should suffer an injury, but more likely he has been brought in for his attributes such his skill and pace, and being able to play down the middle and on the flanks and he adds to the depth upfront and the impact of the bench.

I am shocked about the transfer of Raul. Why? When did Liverpool become Chelsea shopping outlet? Torres, Yossi and now Raul.
ReplyDeleteIt is disappointing but I agree with King Kenny that we do not want players in the camp that are not totally committed to the LFC target, so he can go!
ReplyDeletededlfc
I agree with what my Dad said 'Shanks would turn in his grave if he new one of his players was covered in tattoos all over his body and sporting a silly Mohican haircut'.....
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a shocker him leaving, one minute all smiles in the Red shirt and playing like he wants to stay at LFC, then hands his transfer in...
ReplyDeleteSly bugger!

I agree with Kenny, but I think we should have got more than just £12 million!
ReplyDeleteLatest reports suggest that Gerrard won't be fit until November. All of a sudden we look a little light in the middle. Let's hope Shelvey comes along leaps and bounds.
ReplyDeleteBaz
Sorry everyone, am I wrong to believe that Insua had long been offloaded? What about Elzir?
ReplyDeleteI think Elzar has gone to Fulham.
ReplyDeleteBest bit of business from us was to release Degen from his contract – nothing but a park player getting a contract at a Premiership club.
ReplyDeletededlfc
Sounds like Gerrard's got a very serious infection!
ReplyDeleteWow, it's a long list of dead wood for one club to underwrite their wages week-in-week-out.
ReplyDeleteFew weeks ago we were all complaining about we have too much players....
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of sweeping and clearing out.

Well it is like Gideon in the Bible calling for the soldiers, 22,000 answered the call but only 300 were chosen to deliver the children of Isreal. I want to believe that the bodies we have are good enough to deliver the 4th spot!
ReplyDeleteEdet,
ReplyDeleteThe bible also says that many are called - but few are "chosen". So the ones that Kenny has chosen must deliver!
For the performances so far I believe we do!, but this is football, all teams are much stronger now and have strengthened, as long as we are competitive and going into games with a strong squad.
ReplyDeleteRedAlert
You're right even QPR went to Town and get them selves 10 players, Stoke, Sunderland and even Arsenal had to do a bit of Lidle and Aldi shopping with of course Tesco and Sainsbury basic brand.
ReplyDeleteGood one. Pity about Raul but then maybe its for the best.
ReplyDeleteAfter the Arsenal game supporters felt that with Suarez and Meireles coming on the bench, we had the strength in depth to hold our own against the top teams and even mount some type of sustainable challenge. Therefore, with the sudden transfer of Meireles before the end of the transfer window, it felt like a kick in the teeth. As I said above it may well be that Meireles felt unappreciated after his contract breakdown, but maybe that will all come out in the wash.
ReplyDeleteJan Molby said recently, he felt that Meireles fell between different types of midfield player and that he wasn’t as consistent as he should’ve been which I feel is a tad unfair. I’ve never seen a Latin player hit the ground running in the Premiership as it takes them a season or so to get used to the physicality of the league, so one could have assumed that in his second season he would have improved exponentially after a very promising first season and it’s another reason for the disappointment.
Whatever the motives of the transfer, both Spearing and Shelvey now have another route to playing more minutes on the pitch, especially with Gerrard still unavailable.
In addition, while we have spent somewhere in the region of £115-120 million since Janaury gross (Suarez and Carroll incl), the net spend is around 35-40 million (Torres and Babel sales incl) with the reduction in playing staff. Which goes someway to supporting the new financial structures implented by the Fenway Sports Group - the view is substantiated by Damian Cpmolli in the Daily Mail article http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2032620/Liverpool-chief-Damien-Comolli-hails-owners-financial-backing-transfer-window.html
ReplyDeleteThe main goal for Liverpool as a club this season is to get into a Champions League position because as we saw throughout the recent transfer window, top players do not want to move to teams who are not playing in the Champions League, this is why the package that we have put together as a club mattered so much in attaining players like Downing, Adam, Enrique and Coates and also Suarez and Carroll previously. Craig Bellamy has also taken a hit in terms of a reduce salary which says something for Kenny’s ability as a conveyor and guardian of LFC’s history and message.
Mr Andy Carroll secured a massive move to our club in January 2011 but hasn't shown the expected improvement so far.
ReplyDeleteHis excuse towards the end of the season was injury and lack of fitness which at the time was understandable and a fair reflection.
After recovering from injury and having completed a full pre-season programme we all thought Andy would start the season well but he again seems off the pace and not totally fit.
Stories now emanating out of the England camp is that he is boozing and not fully committed to training to get fully fit.
For me and for LFC fans that want him to succeed that is not acceptable behaviour from one of our players especially when we have paid £35m for him.
Andy Carroll will now have to re-focus and realise his football career is a wonderful but limited time of his life and so to get the best out of himself and to succeed for LFC and England he needs to cut out the bad habits and leave those for when his career has finished!
dedlfc
Never ever been impressed with Andy Carroll. Not a good investment for us.
ReplyDeleteNeeds to be sold asap and hopefully we will recover what we paid for him.
Valerie G
Sorry I beg to differ, we will get nothing near to what we paid for him given his present form.
ReplyDeleteSame here never been impressed with him, but lets give him a chance, if he carries on with the boozing and not fully committed to training more importantly to LFC, then KD must have a Word!
ReplyDeleteRedAlert
Billy, it seems as if the jury is out on Andy already. We need to give him a chance to assimilate - we all knew his strengths before hecame to the club and we need to wait to see how Kenny will use him.
ReplyDeleteBelieve me, given the styles and formations in the Premiership, he will be needed and as I've said above given the criticism and his lack of goals his confidence levels must be down some what as everyone is comparing his success levels, unfairly, to those of Suarez.
His success at Newscastle was down to the fact that the team was built to provide him with the supply, even moving Joey Barton who had played most of his career in the centre to provide pinpoint crosses from the right and from deadball situations for him to run on too.
