Brendan
Rodgers seeing the seventieth minute as the time to move Balotelli from extra
to lead actor in this enthralling drama failed to recognise that for better or
worse Super Mario writes his own scripts.
First, his casual ball forced Lucas into giving away a free-kick in a dangerous
position just outside the area. Second,
he wondered away from the designated player he was assigned to mark (Ivanovic)
which was unforgiveable, especially as the same player put Chelsea ahead. But then, that’s Mario.
Later in a
great position to cross back into the danger zone he selfishly chose to go for
glory and chipped the ball over from a very narrow angle.
That said,
Liverpool were excellent and more than matched Chelsea all over the pitch.
Like the
first leg the propensity to miss chances cost us dear. Gerrard’s sumptuous ball found the overlapping
Moreno who after controlling struck his shot high enough for Courtois to expertly
save and Coutinho’s dazzling run ended with a finish which was again to close
to the big Chelsea keeper.
Jordan
Henderson, who otherwise had an outstanding game will wonder how he managed to
miss his header after brilliant work from Sterling, but again it signifies the
problems we have at the top end of the pitch.
Daniel Sturridge cannot return soon enough, but even in his absence the
profligacy over these two legs has cost us a place in the final, hence it
seemed a strange decision not to use Lallana who has no problems sizing up the
goal.
Granted
Chelsea should have been awarded a penalty with Skrtel’s tackle on Costa, but
the Chelsea striker maliciously stamped on Can and Skrtel was lucky not to have
seen red.
Brendan
Rodgers and Liverpool will see this an opportunity missed if not thrown away
and he will go away from the game knowing that there are decisions to make if
not now, definitely at the seasons end.
Man of the Match: Simon Mignolet – Was simply
magnificent. Produced two saves of a differing nature, but brilliant all the
same. Pulled off a stunning save with
his legs when a deflection sent the ball in the opposite direction to his dive
and then tackled Costa as the Spanish International striker attempted to round
him. Courtois was voted the official man
of the match, but I would suggest the judges were watching a different game.
Critical eye: Starting again without an out an
out striker we failed to capitalised on some terrific football with the magician
Coutinho mesmerizingly brilliant and every inch as creative if not more so than
Hazard. The sides could only be split by
a lapse in concentration and over the two legs the chances missed.
Mario
Balotelli’s attitude after coming was poor to say the least and he may just
have made up the mind of his manager as to finally ridding himself of this wayward
soul.
Referee Michael Oliver and is colleagues
were truly woeful and proved the standard of officialdom in this country which
is under scrutiny more so than ever this season, needs be looked at. To
miss two stamps and the same player trying to tangle with Gerrard, penalty
decisions and to be a fair a possible sending off decision against us was
poor. The three officials fell way below the required standard in
fact I would go as strong as to say they were a disgrace.

Curse Chelsea.
ReplyDeleteFeel totally cheated by both legs where we did not get the rewards for our endeavours, missed chances have cost us a place at Wembley. Putting on Ballotelli instead of Lallana was a decision which mystifies me totally as Lallana offers s much more to our team, whereas Ballotelli is a maverick who is just interested in personal glory rather than working for team glory. Special mention for two players Migs, who has received deserved criticism throughout this season for below par performances but last night was outstanding. Lucas was immense for us last night and only made one mistake due to a poor pass from Ballotelli. We now need to regroup and push on to try and get back into the top 4 before the end of the season. Watched the match in a pub in London called The Ruse and must say for a first time the venue was very impressed by the warm, friendly welcome and loved the atmosphere during the game, was a pleasure to be there and will highly recommend it for all LFC fans. We may be out of the Capital One Cup but we go out with our head held high through our excellent performances in both legs where we showed our new formation was more than an even match for Chelsea. Proud of my LFC team!
ReplyDeleteI heard the game on the Radio, and to me Diego costa was at the centre of attention but for the wrong things, escaping punishment for a stamp on Can and other tangles.
ReplyDeleteWe seemed to have better chances and always looked dangerous on the attack, which was our strategy game play. Raheem and Coutinho doing the business, but seemed Lucas did not have the legs and, likes of Balo and Lambert, (they both need to go) had little effect upon us, against like of Hazard, Willian, Costa, doing it for Chelsea.
Totally agree on why Lallana was not put on rather than waste of space Ballotelli, he is not a team player.
We move on..
As a Liverpool Fan, I was stunned that we could raise our game to that quality, short of the necessary goals, and not as if we did not create chances (Moreno’s + Coutinho’s)
DeleteWe just need to part ways with Mario and get a decent striker in ( Gerrard’s frustration sums it up).
Marion coming on does not make sense at all, player has not played for a while and when you have Borini and Lalana who both played recently. DS, well that would have been a different kettle of fish.
DeleteI was a bit frustrated in extra time it was as if we have given up. There was no urgency.
Yes I agree, Mario coming on took the sting out of our attack, Borini would have been a more viable substitute or if we needed someone to come from midfield then Lalana was your man.
DeleteSaw BR on TV this am (this must have been after last night game) and talking crap – about getting something back. No, we need to win trophies.
DeleteCrap !! Was the nicest word, I could use to describe his interview.
DeleteIf he worked like that at my place, he be sacked!!
DeleteJust read the blog again and one think I pick up was the referee. I said to David last night are they afraid of Jose? Pool players were pushed or shoved off the ball nothing and a little nudge against a Chelsea player free kick. Well, I rest my case.
DeleteWith the amount of stamps Liverpool have got from Costa yesterday they’ll be drinking free coffee for life
ReplyDeleteSomething inside me has always wanted to see Mario succeed at Liverpool and when he came on yesterday I was thinking cometh for hour... after his lay-off you don't expect certain things, but the lackadaisical whimsical air round the pitch was hard to take.
ReplyDeleteYes, he lacks confidence, but the slack pass which caused the free-kick, going M.I.A. for the goal, his utter greed trying to chip when he had colleagues in the box (Rickieeeeee looked vexed) and messing about with the ball and when he should've passed it back to a colleague with time running out took the biscuit.
Lucas was a colossus and I like the way he is taking responsibility ordering players around him. Coutinho on the ball was sensational and put in some serious graft off the ball, Raheem ran himself in the ground (needed more support as Stevie's legs just couldn't get him there often enough and his magical shift of the ball to make room to cross for the Henderson was majestic - just a shame Henderson missed because he put in a huge shift.
Mignolet was brilliant, pure and simple.
All in all if you don't your take chances that's what you leave yourself open to. Great performance, but the old failings showed up again.
BR should keep our midfielders behind for some shooting practice.
Deleteunderstand players need to time, but no brainer Mario and Rickieeeeee both are not new to the game, I feel its really sad to see them come on in a Liverpool shirt and play with heartless, they did not make one impact on the game. Yes I would like both of them to be above good, but they have shown nothing to credit the team, again we have purchased players who don’t make the A –Garde!
DeleteIs it the committee or BR?
DeleteI think BR tells the committee, type of player/name he wants, and the committee go out with a limited checkbook...
DeleteAll just found a word to describe MB - 'lackadaisical'
DeleteGood to see the FA have upheld Costa's charge, thus the 3 match ban kicks in immediately. Shame they only looked at only the initial stamping!

ReplyDeleteI know that we are playing well at the moment but what I can’t understand why we are not buying players that will improve us.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree we have shown that we are a side that can compete with the best teams but we need to now show that we can beat these teams in the big games. The best way to do that is to ensure we purchase big game players rather than players that are similar level to what we already have in our squad.
DeleteIf we are not buying then could this mean that we have players in the reserve that can through and do an EXCELLENT job. We do not need to buy if we have the quality in reserve.
DeleteIn fairness Ings has scored 7 prem goals to Mario’s impressive zero so he’s probably a bit better than what we’ve got at the minute.
DeleteBarry,
DeleteWe need to compare like for like eg how many games has Ings played or minutes.
M
I agree with David on Ings, Berahino would have been a better fit although still a bit raw.
DeleteII am sure I read this am that Sterling has the same agent as Berahino.
DeleteMario’s had plenty of minutes, I’ve watched every laboured, ineffectual, head-bangingly frustrating one of them and I’m pretty confident that Danny Ings is a better striker than the Italian.
DeleteDanny Ings 5 mil or Berahinho 20 mil which one sounds like the FSG January Window outlay??? Anyway I don’t think we’ll go for either of them, we’ll wait til the Summer and throw about 15-20 million at it then.
Same agent as Sterling!!! What?! Get the guy on the phone quick!!! Can you imagine that speed and movement – SBS - Sturridge, Sterling, Berahino now that is scary, most defenders would be do sickies than play them.
DeleteWhen Origi comes in it will be SOS that doesn’t sound good.
DeleteOMG!!! I see why Brendan was thinking of having a go next season…shame it didn’t happen with Uncle G around,
DeleteApparently all the papers have it that we are going to pay 5 million for Ings and then loan him back to Burnley for the rest of the season!!!! Sack the transfer committee NOW!
DeleteHear ! Hear!!
DeleteHe’s on a free in the Summer, why on earth would you pay 5 million now and lend him back? If this happens it is total madness.
DeleteBerahino would be a more exciting signing as he is younger and has blistering pace and can finish. That’s why he is rated at a higher value than Ings.
DeleteSums up the committee – they make so many pointless decisions !!!
DeleteOne fact we have not touched is how to unlock the goal that is sealed by stubborn keepers like the one of Chelsea and Bolton.
DeleteThat is a vital point we have not scored for two games now and its all good and well having clean sheets but without scoring goals we can not win any games !!!
DeleteIngs is only 22, which is still very young for a striker. Also think he's pretty fast.
DeleteOn your point Baz, we'd have to pay 3 million compensation in the summer so suppose that are looking at paying a 2 mill premium to get it done. Does seem bit odd though!
Seas rise and claim us all! The committee has lost it’s mind, if other teams are interested in the Summer then good luck to them I was hoping that we might have slightly bigger fish to fry, but it’s okay because, remember!, next year we’ll be challenging for the league!!! Woop woop
DeleteWell guys call me anything you like, I can’t see any of the two businesses happening in this window.
DeleteDon’t think he has enough pace for Premiership defenders to be fearful
DeletePotential signing of Ings was all over the Echo with the obligatory article from James Pearce about why it makes sense. It’s actually happening isn’t it?
DeleteWas reading a article by Liverpool correspondent Max Munton in which he highlighted Ian Herbert's aricle in the Independent in which he states that if we wait until the summer we have to pay an obligatory £3-5 mill in training compensation. If we buy him now the real figure is closer to £10 mill.
DeleteHe's quicker than Ricky, but I don't understand the premise of buying yet another striker and loaning him out now (may as well had paid the extra and brought in Origi) - we need a striker right now. This is all based on the lottery of Daniel Sturridge remaining fit for the rest of the season. It all seems to fit with the commitee's cheap and chearful buying strategy. The positives are that he can score goals, but the question is does he have what it takes to take us to the next level? We all saw in the week we matched Chelsea stride for stride, but for one department and we need quality back-up!
Luke, watched Jordon Ibe against Man United in the under-21 game and his body language was screaming "what am I doing here?!?"
Alright then… welcome ings YNWA, now tell us what we don’t already know about you, you were a RED fan blah blah and Stevie G is your hero, May 25 2005 was the best day of your life etc etc
DeleteHa, J! Stevie G and instanbul sure to be mentioned!
DeleteYes, they say all the nice things and only to hear Anfield in fine voice and then Freeze for a season (called the bedding in period) …remember Lovren?? Yeah that one the £20 million defender that turned to jelly.
DeleteIn fact I move that players should NOT hold welcome press conference until after a season, so they can then tell us why they are pants or otherwise.
Apparently the Ings move cannot happen because it would contravene Prem League rule V7 which states that a player cannot be purchased and loaned back between Prem Clubs in the same window so if we get him it will be at the end of the season.
DeleteBarry,
DeleteHave you just made up that rule?
M
Cough cough…
DeleteNope apparently it’s the truth, Burnley Chairman came out and quoted it and ruled out the transfer and it’s also now being reported in the Echo.
DeleteSo we have West Ham on Sat and if we beat them we’ll leapfrog them in the table. Unfortunately Sakho has gone and done his back and won’t play this weekend according to the club so who would you stick in there? Glen Johnson auditioned for the role on Tuesday night and I thought he played the role too much like a full back but then again we were up against Chelsea so maybe he’d look better against weakened opposition, would anyone risk Dangerous Dejan? I’d probably start with Dejan although I can’t believe I’m saying that but he might look better now that Lucas is doing the midfield shielding.
ReplyDeleteMigs
Can Skertl Dangerous
Marko Hendo Lucas Moreno
Lallana Coutinho
Sterling
Gerrard and Sturridge both on the bench.
Baz Sakho said yesterday that he was going to be back in training today.
Delete" It’s been several days I felt a tension in the back, the pain has increased and it became very strong in the last game.
I am currently receiving treatment, but there’s nothing to worry about. I will resume training tomorrow with the team!"
Time for some prayers because the alternatives – Glenda Johnson or Dangerous Liability Lovren are just gonna be nightmares versus Carroll and co.
DeleteI’d stick Sakho in ahead of Lovren if his leg was hanging off but I can see the club resting him on Saturday so that he’s fighting fit for the Derby on the 7th.
DeleteFrom what I'm reading on twitter it looks like a good chance it will happen. I'm unsure, part of me thinks worth a gamble as he is still very young and seems to be very highly rated. Scored a peach of a goal a few weeks back that showcased touch and awareness that poor old fabio could only dream of. Think he could be good option as third or fourth choice but worry is we bring him in and can't shift the other three sub standard back ups...
DeleteBelatedly, on Saturdays team - think I'd go with Barry's selection but def going to have to start rotating a bit soon. Like to see Ibe feature soon...
Well that makes a little more sense but still it’s hard to take when we desperately need options for the here and now. Deadly Danny and Daniel next year ‘Double Ds’ in your face Premier League!
DeleteBrendan, sometimes it's just better left unsaid...
ReplyDelete"Stewart was one I did not want to let go," he said. "It was a difficult start for him but when we worked together at the beginning in the second part of the season he was one of the regular players so he wasn't someone who I wanted to move on.
"He has done very well at West Ham. He is a really gifted player technically, he has a wonderful technique, he plays games and trains every day and is a good guy, so it's not surprising to me how well he has done."
Striker Andy Carroll, who also left Anfield for Upton Park, was another to draw praise from Rodgers ahead of the match.
"Andy is a fantastic football player. He has quality and ability around the box," he said.
"I just felt in terms of how I play, and maybe how the team operates, that he might not have been a regular player because of the movement and the speed at which we try to work.
"But that doesn't mean he is a bad player. He is an outstanding player and when he is fit he has shown that at West Ham."
As for trying to avenge the result at Upton Park where Liverpool lost 3-1 last September, Rodgers said: "It's a different team now and we have a different mentality.
"I think at that point in time we were struggling. We were trying to play with the same flow and the same rhythm but we just couldn't find it at that time.
“I think you see now the confidence in the team. I think we've returned to the top level."
I think that tomorrow will be a really tough test, West Ham seem to be set up ideally to exploit our weaknesses, They defend well have pace on the flanks and through the middle and Carroll is a big lad (Skrtels kryptonite) who is banging them in at the minute. Expect lots and lots of crosses and a tough afternoon.
DeleteBig Sam will revert to type tomorrow, pack the midfield and lump balls up to the big man with the aim to frustrate and maybe nick a point. If we allow them to score first it could be a long afternoon of attack against defence and breaking down opponents is not our strong suit at the moment.
DeleteIt's going to be another tough one, Daniel Sturridge will most likely be on the bench, but let's not hey carried away if he comes on, 5 months out he will not be match fit fully, but if he can find his space it be back of the net. We seem to be playing better with our holding and attacking midfield but let's see who plays. We need to play like we did with Chelsea, but find the net, and not stop on 1,
Delete
