AFC Wimbledon 1 Liverpool 2 - Gerrard saves LFC blushes again

By dedlfc

With all the talk of Gerrard's imminent departure at the end of the season capturing the headlines since our last game, it was written in the stars that Steven Gerrard’s long goodbye would begin with him saving our blushes.

AFC Wimbledon threatened an upset akin to the 1988 FA Cup final, but a home tie with Bolton now awaits after a difficult night at Kingsmeadow, where we missed the creative spark of Lallana out with a thigh injury for a month, but still had the silky skills of Coutinho pulling the strings just Rickie Lambert.

The Dons made their mark straight away when Javier Manquillo was left writhing around in pain in the first minute.

The impressive Sean Rigg was not even reprimanded for the challenge and was soon causing constant problems at the other end, latching on to a flick forwards to hit a bobbling effort across the face of goal.

It was a missed chance which was ruthlessly exposed as we scored with our first clear-cut chance of the match.

After neat team play, Gerrard played the ball out to the right and Manquillo’s cross was headed home by the Reds captain with a determined brave header.
Who else but Stevie G to break the deadlock
A Lazar Markovic cross-shot almost doubled Liverpool’s advantage, but while we were dominating possession, the Dons were growing into the tie.

Only a timely Martin Skrtel challenge prevented Matt Tubbs turning home a Francomb cross, with Rigg’s fizzing strike from the resulting corner heading in until Mignolet impressively clawed over.

Akinfenwa – widely considered the strongest player in world football – was, unsurprisingly, proving a handful with his presence seeing a James Shea goal kick through to Tubbs, who hooked an effort across the face of goal.

The 32-year-old was soon back at the heart of the action, heading wide before giving the home side a deserved leveller.

Francomb’s corner to the back post was bundled onto the crossbar by an under-pressure Mamadou Sakho, with Akinfenwa, whose bulk had hampered Mignolet’s pathetic attempt to catch the cross, stabbing home the rebound from close range.
The Beast strikes as promised pre-match
Things almost got even better for the Dons early in the second half, with a poor Gerrard pass allowing Sammy Moore a strike which deflected just wide.

That was a let-off for the Liverpool captain, who made amends from the resulting corner as he cleared Barrett’s header off the line, with Rigg firing wide as the visitors continued to wobble.

It was at this point, though, that the tide began to turn. Jordan Henderson saw a shot accidentally blocked by his own team-mate and Philippe Coutinho fired wide, before penalty appeals for handball against Barry Fuller were waved away.

However, the Wimbledon vice-captain could have no arguments with the free-kick award minutes later. Fuller was booked for his challenge on Coutinho and Gerrard made the home side pay, impressively curling the free-kick past Shea, who would be disappointed that he had got his fingertips to the ball but not quite enough to stop it nestling in the net.
Gerrard shows why he is still a Don
Dannie Bulman lashed one just over as Wimbledon attempted to equalise, while at the other end goalkeeper Shea impressively denied a placed Rickie Lambert shot with his feet.

Coutinho was also denied by the Arsenal academy graduate, who then thwarted Markovic on the break after Adebayo Azeez effort was blocked. The Wimbledon substitute again threatened in stoppage time but there was to be no dream leveller as Mignolet smothered, with Gerrard seeing a hat-trick denied by a goal-line clearance.

Man of the match - none other than our Captain Fantastic who else! Played so well should have walked away with the pink match ball and in all honesty should have had four goals.

Wimbledon: Shea, Fuller, Goodman, Barrett, Kennedy, Francomb (Sutherland 86), Moore (Pell 86), Bulman, Rigg (Azeez 79), Tubbs, Akinfenwa. Subs Not Used: Bennett, Oakley, McDonnell, Harrison.

Liverpool: Mignolet, Can, Skrtel, Sakho, Manquillo (Jose Enrique 71), Henderson, Lucas, Markovic (K Touré 86), Gerrard, Lambert (Balotelli 79), Coutinho. Subs Not Used: Moreno, Borini, Williams, Ward.

Referee: J Moss. Attendance: 4,784

Scorers: AFC Wimbledon - Akinfenwa (36); Liverpool - Gerrard (12, 62)

Positives
The determination of our captain to put all the talk behind him and let his football do the talking and he did so with great aplomb, apart from one misplaced pass which could have cost us dear, his game intelligence and passing and set piece skills are irreplaceable and we should enjoy all these qualities from this great player because once he has gone they are gone from our side.

The attacking drives of Markovic - he is starting to look like a constant threat down the left and has now settled into the LFC way of playing - just needs to work on his finishing as he missed a gilt edged chance which would have won us the game vs Leicester in the league and now also missed a great chance to finish off the Dons. It is hoped that with Lallana out for a month that Markovic will step up.

Sakho's distribution apart from one meaningless punt up field was outstanding and he looks a fixture on the left side of our three centre backs

Can looked so much more comfortable in centre midfield in the last ten minutes of the game rather than playing at centre back.

Negatives
Again our keeper's poor confidence at commanding his area has cost us a goal with him flapping at thin air for the Dons goal, our problem is that there is no other option to take him out of the firing line.

At 1-0 we took our foot off the pedal and let the Dons get back in the game and could have very easily lost the game due to poor defending at set pieces.

Lambert again looks totally out of his depth as our attacking option and has been a major disappointment which has surprised me as he has Premiership experience but just can't perform for us.

Our manager's comments after the game:-
“I think the FA Cup final is on his birthday, so there would be no better way, for him. It would be a wonderful send-off for him,” “There are a lot of games to play in between. If we could do it, it will be really special.

“He was outstanding in the game, a brilliant individual performance from him and the real catalyst for us. It was a tough game overall. In the second half we were much better, he scored two and probably if he was a really selfish player he would have stayed on the ball and got a hat-trick. He was outstanding but he’s still trying to create opportunities for other players.”

  1. We struggled all over the pitch with AFC Wimbledon's physicality. Markovic and Coutinho looked good on the ball, but once Wimbledon starting to get stuck in they struggled to impose themselves.

The same goes for the defence. Mignolet is pretty inept right now, being at fault for the goal, but the protection offered generally from the defence is not there. Shrtel struggled and the back three option for me is something Brendan has fallen on to hide the deficiencies in the defence and defensively in midfield.

As for Gerrard, I don't believe there is another player in the Liverpool squad who could've scored his first goal and the pressure that we were under I'm not sure that there are many who could have delivered the second.

In the absence of Lallana and Liverpool's and Brendan's reluctance to go into the transfer market will we recall Ibe or will Suso finally get a sniff or be sold on?

    1. Agree with you on all points. We are simply not bullying teams enough and the defence is simply shambles. We don't know how to defend, I'm sure there's more of a twist to SG final decision, like you've said poor management.

  2. Agree on points that Markovic can drive forward, and not scared of that but it the final ball, he missed a sitter….which would have finished the game off.

Sakho seemed comfortable, and pretty much clearing the ball out, with no nonce sense, good to see José Enrique back, once his fit, like him to burst down that left wing into danger zone.

And Can, defiantly more confortable in centre midfield, did not get to grips with playing at centre back, not his style

    5. Edet, so many things are a joke at this moment.

Problems between the sticks, problems in defence, problems in midfield and certainly problems in the striking department, but yet we are tyying to wangle a move for Shaqiri, whereby he goes to Inter on loan and then joins us in the summer. Don't like hammering Rickie, but he was poor yesterday - he looks a shadow of his Southampton self when the ball used to stick to him like glue... must be buying his glue in the pound shop!

Fully in need of a goalkeeper and it's Everton who are moving for Cardiff's keeper...

Thought Suso might just get a window of opportunity with Lallana injured, but it seems he will leave even if Milan are now saying they may bid in the summer.

    6. Really disappointed to see suso go, the hours I have wasted watching clips of him on YouTube for lfc reserves, various age Spanish teams and almeria. Torn between wanted him to do well at AC prove my scouting credentials and wanting him to be bang average to soft blow and not leave me with a major grievance with Rodgers!

Quite depressing how influential stevie was last night. Torn between thinking that he has become such a side show, and is so reluctant to have a reduced role, that it may be best for all for him to move on, and on the other hand really regretting that he couldn't of been convinced to stay on for another year to be used sparingly in an attacking role and as an impact sub...

Serious lack in experience in the squad now...would love to see xabi return to take on role of teams leader.

    7. Disappointed how SG has managed his “long goodbye” as a means to surreptitiously air his grievances at not being offered a contract soon enough, for long enough and having to handle a reduced role within the team which all seem to have come as a monumental blow to his 34 year old ego.

Of course all the pundits were stampeding over each other to inform the world that two goals against lower league opposition was proof positive of the gargantuan mistake LFC were making by letting him go (let’s ignore he was offered a contract) while also not mentioning the numerous games he’s been a passenger or has spent treading water, or that he couldn’t be given a coaching role because he’s yet to pass any of his coaching badges.

A great player in his prime absolutely but at the moment his continued presence at the club is more of a hindrance to the development of Henderson and Can. The real worry is that BR hasn’t adequately replaced Suarez or Carragher and now he has to replace one of the greatest Liverpool players ever, anyone else see a bid for Joey Barton coming!!

      Delete
    8. Very true, but the fact remains lower opposition or not I could not see any other LFC player scoring that type of goal. Once Stevie's gone just as in the Swansea game we may (hopefully) find others stepping into the breach in terms of leadership (Henderson) because someone has too.

Coutinho was running up blind allies until we went ahead again. A little bit of physicality and surprising how easy we crumble. Said, it time and time again - would like to see Henderson paired with Can in the middle over a run of games. Three at the back is basically trying to cover up the cracks in the centre-halfs, in midfield and with Migs.

With Suso I fervently believe he has a better end product than Coutinho. When Brendan suddenly starts talking up a player you know it's the end of tenure at the club and his trying to get a transfer fee... remember Downing!?!

    9. Joey what? What did he forget at Anfield??

    10. On the Stevie issue, I think that his leaving at the end of this season is the right move for all parties. Last nights performance suited the headline writers because now they get to wring their hands and shout what will Liverpool do without Stevie but in reality apart from the two goals (which admittedly is a very important contribution) I didn’t think that Stevie was really in the game, he certainly wasn’t running the show like he would have in years gone by and there is the trouble…..

Nobody can deny that Stevie’s powers are on the wane. He’s approaching an age where at some stage in the not too distant future his form is going to drop off a cliff, look at Gareth Barry at Everton, last year the press were praising Martinez for a masterstroke signing – fast forward 9 months and the journos are calling him past it and wondering why the bluenoses gave him a two year contract. Closer to home Ricky Lambert looks like he’d struggle in the conference after being one of the top scorers in the Premier League last term.

Stevie is undeniably still making a contribution to Liverpool at the moment but what will his fitness and form be like in August 2015 at the start of next season? Do we really want to watch as perhaps the greatest Liverpool player ever deteriorates into a bit part player before our eyes? Why not send him off to LA where him and his family can enjoy the sunshine, he can continue to earn a packet and he can be a big fish in the MLS for a couple of years and preserve our memories of the fella in his pomp.

This truth is that there will never be a good time to say cheerio to Gerrard, but with this season having already become yet another one of transition it’s the right time to just rip off the plaster get it over and done with and try to get the team sorted out and stable for next year. I agree with Rodgers though when he says that next Summer FSG need to ditch their policy of only buying youth and potential, we have enough of that now. Next year we need to get a few experienced players who can hit the ground running, inspire the younger players and add presence.

      Delete
    11. Everyone knows Stevie is my favourite player, but I remember something George Best said one about Bobby Charlton that he was "bloody institution". In a sense that you can't really criticise someone like that.

I said, the other day that when one is writing about him is difficult to say that his legs are going or the team needs to be built around Gerrard for him to be seen in full effect because you get responses like the one's we heard on the box and also you remember the guy in full effect mode. Even last night there were moments when he tried to flick the ball off and the move broken down and you know that that way back yonder he would've collected the ball and drove straight at the opposition. Time waits for no man...

      Delete
    12. Agree with many of points made by all. Definite danger of Gerrard staying holding likes of can and Henderson back but think its easy to understate his enduring quality by referencing quality of opposition. Think he could of continued to offer a great deal but suppose it's a complicated cost benefit analysis and club have decided at his age he would not be able to do enough to continue justifying being a massive, massive earner for two years. Just hope like Barry that there is a shift in transfer policy and some establish figures are recruited in the summer.

I thought coutihno was great the other night. The one who was always looking to make something happen. He's had a poor season by his standards and has been very inconsistent but I think he can become one of our really key players with a sustained run in the side. One of big things we will lack when stevie departs is his range of passing, another reason why someone in the xabi mould might be a good shout. Would like to see can have a few games in centre mid too...

      Delete
    13. In recent weeks I’ve seen improvement in Coutinho, Lallana, Can and Markovic which makes me feel positive for a future without Gerrard, however contrary to Brendan’s hope I wouldn’t imagine a shift in transfer policy this summer as it’s a crucial part of FSG’s long term planning that ties into the stadium redevelopment. In fact that’s why he was appointed to develop these guys into top class players.

    1. “there’s no finger pointing from me” he said as he pointed to the unsigned contract completely forgetting his original assertion that he was only announcing his decision to leave now as he didn’t want his departure to be a distraction in the season run-in.

We all know how fragile footballers egos can be after all (no birthday cake for Yaya!!) and it must be an emotional wrench when you realise you’re no longer the indispensable force you once were at your boyhood club but there’s no place for sentimentality in football or for the self importance of individuals no matter how great a career you’ve had. Just maybe the contract wasn’t offered during the summer because the club was slightly preoccupied with the contracted and complicated Suarez deal, while also trying to strengthen the squad for the new season.

Its about time SG stopped being the distraction he claimed he didn’t want to become and just shut up until the end of the season!!

      Delete
    2. Unfortunately, the time has decreed that SG must go, having another slip will seriously dent his legendary status.

      Delete
    3. So true, except his going and move on, most of us saying how more open we play with out him. But a bigger dent in our team....

      Delete
    4. I totally agree Peter, while he has been a great ambassador to the club, I believe the club has been fair to him and he must admit that he is no longer the player he was maybe 2 seasons ago. He must know deep down that the team has played better without him in the starting line up and this has been evident even in some games since last season. Henderson is more adventurous when SG is not in the team and everyone plays without having to think of relying on him as the main focus

    2. With the fantastic and magnificent scouts team that we have they have potentially identified at 3 possibility. In reality, none as there is no money.

      Delete
    3. Not sure if it’s a case of there being no money or no value for money in this transfer window, very few clubs will sell quality players in January with the season run-in to contend with, so the best we could hope for is a short-term loan deal which rarely works out.

Brendan will have to get Sturridge out of the treatment room and get more out of his squad; Mario and MIgs specifically.

      Delete
    4. I agree. I'm not too worried about us signing anyone to be honest. Think fourth is unlikely regardless and think its fair enough for fsg to expect br to work with what he has until the summer given outlay. Read yest that since they came in we are 6th highest net spenders in European football.

Having said that surely a goalkeeper can be found on loan and the origi deal can be brought forward to address the two glaring weaknesses.

      Delete
    5. I must say, I'm extremely concerned about not signing a goalkeeper - or anyone who can wear a pair of gloves and stand in the goal and dive in the direction of the opponents shot. Without a keeper to sharpen up competition or back up, I reckon we'll struggle to secure a top 6 finish. What's Brad Friedal doing nowadays?!

      Delete
    6. I don’t think BR handled the Migs situation well, after backing him through countless poor displays he drops him for an indefinite period just before the Manu game, for a keeper whose confidence was shot that public rebuke would have finished him. Then he regains his place not through any of his own endeavours but an unfortunate injury. Once a player believes the manager no longer has confidence in him you might as well write him off.

      Delete
    7. Brendan's comments at times, does surprise me which again suggests that he's still learning his trade. I know our media department is pretty poor but some things need to be rained in. Why did he feel the need so say that Migs would be out "indefinitely"? To make himself sound like he's the man in charge? I don't get it.

Going back to the article on where those young prospects are now, the list could go on and on even further. Lets hope Ibe is not added to the list!

      Delete
    8. Listening to Mignolet I don't actually believe be thinks there is a problem. Didn't he recently say that that he had nothing to prove to anyone...?

There are good keepers out there especially in the Championship that we could go after if we really wanted them. Said before and agree with Luke that if Brendan wants a goalkeeper or a striker he should be asked to sell a few to bring some money in having made such outlay last summer. For instance, he's brought in 3 cente-halfs, a right-back and a left-back, so should generate some cash in the credit column if he wants to bring in someone like Winston Reid.

One area he should be working at is midfield at the very least having someone ready to bring in during the summer recess.

      Delete
    9. Having a decent keeper will bring stability and confidence (hopefully) to the back four. We can then take it from there.

      Delete
    10. The point is can he sell a player bought in by the “committee”? as the club has never fully explained who has the final say on acquisitions and departures. I’m beginning to believe that Brendan selects the team and how they play and that’s basically where his responsibility ends.

As for Migs not sure he could say anything else when the manger has pulled the rug out from beneath you? I think it was Clough who said “the art of management is keeping the 5 players who hate you, away from the 6 who haven’t made up their mind” something BR should remember.

      Delete
    11. That maybe true of Balotelli. But as he said he'd watched Markovic for a couple of years and the Southampton players were all is judging by his quotes at the time and we all heard what he said about Moreno. Just a smokescreen because know can convince he didn't have the finally say over Biffa.

The board cocked up over the big signings he wanted and he is quite rightly smarting over that.

We'll say what Brendan has to say to in his press conference in a few minutes time.

      Delete
    12. I think the decisions we make over the next 9 months we'll shape the club over the next five years. What we need to do now is halt the decline. BR is the very same one that watched Borini from close quarters over a number of years and still signed him, ditto for Jo Allen. The very minimum I'd expect us to do in the transfer market is to buy a goalkeeper. I wonder how we'd fare if for any reason Migs lost control and got sent off, with Jones injured, milk cup semi and milk cup Euros round the corner? Let's just get a keeper that BR and his coaches can work with. I'm not sure whether BR is even on the Transfer committee!

      Delete
    3. Said many times we have too many players who play in the same areas.

      Delete
    4. Rodgers is as obsessed with attacking mids as Rafa was with defensive mids. There is no balance to this team at all, useless at the front, useless at the back and pourous through the middle, how did we spend all that money and still end up in this state?

      Delete
    5. Baz, you know I've been knocking on for sometime about a centre-midfield powerhouse and I was saying this last season. Still stunned that we don't have one and yet across the park they have McCarthy and Barkley.

How is that we have three right-backs. It's to easy to say it's the committee. I really want Brendan to succeed, but how can you buy all those players and only have only two (Coutinho and Sturridge) come good. People should remember that he bought Mignolet when Pepe still belong to us, so he knew what he was doing.

      Delete
    6. Yeah Migs is a significant downgrade on Pepe and the really thinkg is that at Swansea Rodgers praised the merits of Vorm’s qualities as a sweeper keeper, then he goes and buys Migs who was crap with his feet even when he was at Sunderland. If we do get another keeper in I think we should wait until a time until we can offer decent money and get a permanent solution. We don’t want a merry-go-round of rubbish between the sticks for the next three years. Also, I think that it takes a big character to be Liverpool keeper so we should be going for someone who has experience at the top level and can handle the pressure rather than some prospect.

I don’t think that Rodgers likes defensive mids, his idea of a spoiler is Joe Allen. He’s had 2 and a half years and this will be his 5th window and he hasn’t ever even been linked with a spoiler so I don’t expect to see one anytime soon. The nearest thing that we have in the Squad is Can. Now Stevie is off I’d like to See Can and Hendo as our regular midfield two and Stevie can get his game further forward. I actually though that Gerrard and Balotelli looked pretty effective up top against Wimbledon in the last 15 mins but whether it could work in the Prem remains to be seen.

Rodgers to me has the look of a dead man walking these days, I think he’ll be gone in the Summer. Fourth spot will save him but I can’t see us putting a run together, we are simply too much of a shambles defensively. We look like we can concede at least two goals every game regardless of the opposition.

      Delete
    7. That £15 mill for Joe Allen is looking like a lead weight around Brendan's neck. The fact is all we needed was a few top class players even with the exit of Suarez and we managed to balls that up. At Barcelona the Director of football has just been sacked because they are blaming him for the club's recent transfer policy and that includes Suarez. Now where's the accountability at Anfield. Almost 30 players in during his tenure and not one superstar... piss poor to say the least!

Everyone and their mother knew that Jones was shot as a keeper and yet he did nothing to bring an experience number two, it's unforgivable. If he could only learn that you need a spine to become successful he'd be more than half way there.

I also want him to succeed because I don't want a fifth manager in five years, this club needs stability.

    4. Was reading a rather depressing article the other day by a guy who had analysed the situation pretty thoroughly and he said that to get into the top four this year we would now have to average 2.2 points per game which is championship winning form. I can’t see it happening personally and I wonder if FSG will tolerate that failure given the levels of investment, of course they are at fault for a deeply flawed transfer policy since they arrived but it’ll be Brendan that will carry the can.

A much improved showing in the second half of the campaign might just save his job but I suspect he’ll be laminating more copies of the dossier around May. I can’t see FSG changing tack on management recruitment and I’d expect them to go for another up and comer as they have more of a tendency to do what they are told and not rock the boat. Rafa is exactly opposite to the kind of candidate our owners would be looking for.

My team for tomorrow would be

I'd play him off the front rather than holding up the midfield. I think Kolo may be be off to the African Nations so carry the can may need to stay there for another game. 18. I wonder what the buy out clause will be? If we do get a new manager in the Summer he’ll probably look at Raheem as the quickest way to get a kitty together.

  9. Interesting article:

Brendan Rodgers does not expect any players to leave Liverpool during the January transfer window.
Midfielder Suso has been linked with a possible transfer to AC Milan in recent weeks after finding it difficult to break into the Reds’ first-team.
Rodgers has largely played down the possibility of any players joining the Merseyside club this month, and the Northern Irishman maintained a similar stance when quizzed about potential exits.
Asked if he expects any players to leave this month, Rodgers said on Thursday: “Not at this point, no.
“The idea is to ensure that everyone stays.”
However, Rodgers did admit that some of the club’s fringe players could be sent out on loan for the rest of the 2014-15 campaign.
“There might be a few who need to go out on loan because the aren’t playing much,” he added.

    1. SG can't be replaced, like all technicians in the game, but we can get another quality player in that position and build on his football... For now I think we all agree a must goal keeper who had the quality to do the basics and more, we don't get a keeper in than we could end up sitting in mid table end of season.

    2. We need to have entered a £150m release clause or Real Madrid will jump all over this in the summer as £35m for Sterling would be taking liberties.

    3. I think we will be mid table if Migs is in goal for the rest of the season.

    4. Not really that much assurance though. Did Suarez not sign a 4 years contract in December and jump the ship in June? One may say this is slightly different is Liverpool made.
