Liverpool welcomed back Daniel Sturridge and Glen Johnson back to
the squad, with having lost Sakho and Brad Jones to injury with Joe Ward making
the bench.
Liverpool hit their straps early taking the lead within five
minutes as Cissokho long range drive took a massive deflection off Shawcross
leaving Butland wrong footed.
With Lucas playing further up field and Gerrard in the holding
role Liverpool were trying to get a grips with Stoke’s robust style sacrificing
Gerrard’s creative attacking output for he’s assured nature in front of the
back four and using Lucas younger legs in the engine room.
The match seemed well within out control when a piece of Suárez
opportunism doubled the lead. A long
punt up field from Skrtel caused panic in the retreating Stoke defence when
Wilson headed back with little conviction, Shawcross trying to tidy up only
ended up nudging the ball way from Butland.
Suárez instinctively sniffing the chance nipped in to tuck the ball as
only a true poacher can.
Cissokho and Henderson celebrate Liverpool's opener |
In cruise control and with no apparent threat Liverpool proceeded
to throw away a two goal advantage to two ex-Liverpool players. First, with Suárez doubling back to help
Johnson they stood off and watched Marko Arnautovic measure his cross to Crouch
and the big man, having lost Toure, dispatched a wonderful header into the
corner of the net.
Liverpool in state of flux lost the ball from a loose Henderson
pass and then stood off as Adams trundled forward and hit a spectacular shot
which whistled past the diving Mignolet into the corner of the net. It was a disappointing end to half and the season
at that juncture seemed about to unravel.
As Stoke looked to build on their momentum, Liverpool through the impressive
Raheem Sterling earned themselves a penalty.
The winger blocked Wilson’s attempted pass with his arm, raced into the
area only to be brought down by the unlucky defender.
Steve Gerrard, embarking on in his 650th appearance for
the club, dispatched his fifth penalty of the season sending Butland the wrong way.
Philippe Coutinho looking a little leggy and not enjoying one of
his best games, although working hard, was surprising replaced by the returning
Daniel Sturridge with Liverpool in need of some stability in the midfield. The substitute proved a masterstroke.
Five minutes later the SAS frontline linked up once again to put
Liverpool two goals clear. Sturridge
driving on from halfway to the edge of the area, before darting one way and
then sending a superb reverse flick the other too Suarez, who opened up his
body and curled the ball inside the far past to send the Liverpool fans into euphoric
exaltation.
A two goal lead and 19 minutes remaining should have seen Liverpool
cantering to the winning post, but with the midfield unable to get any real control
and protect the back four with any certainty Stoke were still in the match.
Five minutes from time Stoke were again within one goal when Walters
shot inexplicably escape the grasp off Mignolet.
Any nervousness which Liverpool may have felt was wiped away
within two minutes. Sterling who with every
passing game is showing different facets of his game, held the ball up superbly
before passing to Suárez, who in turn crossed to his striking partner. Liverpool fans jumped up thinking Sturridge
right foot shot had crept in only to realise that Butland had pulled off a
stunning reaction save, but he gathered himself chested the ball upwards and
then headed the ball to gain control before volleying in on the turn and running
away to celebrate in front of the away fans in his own inimitable style.
Man of the match: Luis Suárez – Another fantastic display by the
brilliant talismanic striker. The great
thing about Suarez is that he gives everything to the cause week on week. His goals were from different ends of the
spectrum, one a poacher’s goal from the Ian Rush school of instinct and the
other from the Thierry Henry school of artistry.
As soon as Daniel Sturridge entered the fray, he moved on to
another level seemingly enjoying playing with another player of extreme skill
and his celebration with Sturridge after the latter’s flick to set it up was a
recognition of its ingenuity. He
returned the favour with a glorious ball to set up Sturridge for his goal.
Critical
eye: Quality players got us
out of a bind and if Gerrard is to play in the holding role, we really need a
top-class midfield to strengthen the spine of the team and it may mean that Lucas
takes on a peripheral role.
The ease which Charlie Adam went past Cissokho time and again shows
that Cissokho has no long-term future and highlights the need for a new
left-back.
In just 25 minutes on the pitch, Sturridge reminded us of his
excellent partnership with Suarez, but also how Coutinho’s final ball is not
yet top grade as he invariably over or under hits his passes. He gets into some excellent positions, but often
fails to hit the target or shoots straight at the keeper as he did with his
volley in the first half.
Mignolet looks to have lost confidence in coming to claim the
ball, resorting to punching the ball when a catch would suffice and it’s
manifesting itself in his shot-stopping.
The sooner Sakho returns to the fray with his pace and aerial
ability the better.

Vital win by the lads with all the other contenders for the top 4 winning this weekend except for Arsenal who play Monday night.
ReplyDeleteExcellent news that the SAS is now back in tandem and they clicked back into action with a couple of fantastic pieces of strike partnership play.
Nice to finally put to bed the Britannia stadium jinx so we now move on to another home game vs Villa next week to maintain the pressure on the rest.
Personally, I think that the was our best result of the season. To go to Stoke at the Brittania where Stoke had conceeded just 10 goals this season and put five past them takes some doing.
DeleteAdmittedly, the penalty stopped Stoke's momentum, but we had our fair share of bad decisions over the festive period and you just have to ride your luck. Suarez was different class and is now developed in a truly all round player capable of creating and doing his share of defending from the front. Daniel Sturridge's return has given us an extra dimension going forward and his goal, just as Suarez first goal was all instinct and the way he sucked in the defence to buy Suarez room for his second was classic centre-forward play.
Again, if we could only get in some physicality in the engine room and a goal scoring midfielder then we would really be talking challenging at the business end of the league.
Toure was poor yesterday, he didn't have a clue where Crouch was for his goal and both the goals stemmed from misplaced passes from midfielders. Mignolet's loss of form is worrying because he has cost us point(s) at Man City and increased the pressure in the final throes of the match.
If Suarez and Sturridge stay fit we'll have a chance against anyone, but as I say a stronger midfield would help defensively as we are still leaking too many goals with teams running straight through the middle to attack the defence and as well as Lucas played he is not the answer in a more attacking midfield role and the fact he had to play there shows how short we are. As such, it is surprising that we didn't have a centre-midfielder from the reserves on the bench.
With a couple of quality additions we could make ourselves more combative and harder to score against.
Any way, an excllent win against a team who going into the match, I'm sure many of us felt trepidation which wasn't helped by the half-time score.
Considering that we have not won at Stoke for a number of years, I must say that it was a good win and we needed some luck, which came our way - penalty.BTE, we need to start winning game without conceding goal(s).
DeleteGreat at last to do a double on Stoke for a change. I think the first goal with solid defence could have been prevented. Even the second one too and the 3rd one was definitely the goal keeper fault. He should be saving such all the day long. Glen John is certainly not looking the player we come to admire. Is it not 100% fit?
DeleteYes I know the pen we got should not have been, ball to hand and of course the “Spanaird’s pen” as BR label it, back track to Man City and Chelsea games we were at the receiving end of the officials poor decisions which cost us 6 straights points. Isn’t time we gain from such bad decision for a change? As nervy as watching that game was, there was no way we were going to loose that match judging from the determination on the faces of those players. Long may our luck continue.
Fantastic result – winning at Stoke is brilliant – major concerns about the defence but the SAS are back in full effect!!!
DeleteStoke Stoke Stoke Stoke Stoke ....wow!!
DeleteI am still catching my breathe, the game was played at such a frenetic pace that my friends were moaning that the time added on should have been more than 4 minutes ( I was praying for the final whistle with Crouch seeming to derail the Liverpool train)
Reinforcement Reinforcement are now urgently required for the title challenge no one seem willing to admit to.
Welcome back SAS - fourth goal was a sweet peach of what to come.
What a game! That was exciting stuff, a bit too exciting in places. Credit to Stoke they gave us a really good game and actually played some decent football at times. Our ex players came back to haunt us, I was just waiting for Pennant to come off the bench and bang in a hat trick but thankfully that didn’t happen. We were great up front but rubbish at the back which is the story of our season.
DeleteMignolet needs to cut out the mistakes and start taking command of that penalty area a bit more, there were times when he should have rushed out to collect or clear but he stayed rooted to the goal line and when he did come out for a ball he went for really weak punches instead of catching the bloody thing!! Skrtel and Toure are far from convincing as a defensive partnership but with our injury list we had no choice, hopefully Sakho will be fully fit for the Derby next weekend because Lukaku will have a birthday against Martin and Kolo.
Stevie G needs to d a bit more to earn his place as well, there were times when Stoke were dandering through our midfield a bit too easy and the Lucas Gerrard Axis still looks ponderous. On the plus side Suarez and Sturridge were irresistible and Sterling continued his fine run of form (that was never a penalty though, we’ll take it all the same). Just glad to get back up to forth ahead of Everton and Spurs, it looks like it’s going to be a really tough fight for that last Champions league spot, next weekend’s Mersey Derby should be an absolute cracker.
Oh yeah, and speaking of crackers. B-Rod outdid himself with the “Spanish Penalty” comment - really special, special guff from our manager, Bravo!
It's an excellent win as before yesterday they'd only let in 10 all season at home, so to puty in five takes some doing.
DeletePure and simple the difference between the sides was our strikers and Sterling. Thought Sterling's hold-up play for Sturridge's goal was superb.
I think there are just as many concerns about the midfield as the defence, how we can lose a ball near the half way line, the ball goes down the line and across the edge of the area without one tackle going in takes doing and the least said about 'careless hands' in goal the better. The Charlie Adams goal was like a dagger to the heart, with Skrtel backing off as if he was faced with tackling Lionel Messi... the only thing they have in common is they are left-footed! We need an enforcer in there pretty quickly and if Lucas is not going to be the holding player...?
Well, I am not sure Mark H. covered him self in glory with his unrealistic press conference, over selling the pen that was not as something that could have cancelled out two well constructive goals by world class players. They had 4 shots on target compared to Liverpool 9 not really sure his point. If PC had taken his chance, we would have been 3:0 up by half time. Sad he did not even have the decency to acknowledge the fact that his team was up against the most prolific striker on the planet in the minute.
DeleteYes, there are 17 games to go with a total of 51 points at stake. If we go pass Villa come Saturday, we need to make sure that we pick the whole 3 points from Everton and that will help open up a 4 points gap for a starter. Let us for planning purposes aim realistically at achieving additional 42 points. A provision of loosing 3 games, Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City and further draw say in 3, against Spurs, Everton and Man U. That will take us to a total of 84 points, hopefully that should be enough to give us a the necessary top 4 finish.
If we get 84 points or above this season I think we will be lifting a more significant trophy rather than just a cheque for 4th place.
Delete84 points gets us 2nd place at least I think.
I think Lucas will be carrying the energy drinks on injury breaks once Joe Allen comes back fully fit.
DeleteLucas came to us with the reputation of being an attacking midfielder but his mindset over the years has been totally changed to now be a defensive midfielder that is unable to influence games.
All,
DeleteIn defence of Lucas, I think he had a pretty good game but thought SG need more game as some of his passes were well off target. Also, we need to bear in mind what the gaffer has told him to do.
Give me Lucas anytime rather than JA because he will play a more positive ball than JA.
Do not understand your thinking on Joe 90 – he is a very talented player who has shown in glimpses that he is definitely an upgrade on Lucas as he does intelligent runs even though work has to be done on his shooting like Coutinho !!!
DeleteI did admit a while back that Lucas was not playing at that time. He has improved and I think defensively he is better and he needs to do a bit more upfront like getting the odd goals and also some killer passes.
DeleteMo
What do you guy think about D.Haman comments – he tips Spurs to claim the 4th spot. That hurt coming from him though. Unless is doing some kind of reverse psychology.
ReplyDeleteRe Hamann's comments
DeleteI think it is reverse psychology on the ex red's part to spur (excuse the pun) the Red Hot Reds to more than the 4th place. which I feel they are capable of achieving .
On the question of midfielders, I feel we need more than just functional midfielders which is what the present crop is,
Long may the RED LUCK continue...
