I was absolutely stunned to see us start with a midfield which had
little chance of standing up to the physical presence of a three man Villa
midfield with Jordan Henderson alone in the middle and Gerrard sitting deep and
being curtailed by the more agile Weimann.
Gerrard looked every inch his almost 34 years in the first half
and Rodgers if he was brilliant with the Sturridge substitution against Stoke, was
too slow in changing a formation which was patently all at sea against an Aston
Villa side dominating in all quarters.
If we learnt anything in this game it’s that the squad needs
bolstering and soon. The message was
there loud and clear against Stoke, but we got out of jailed saved by our
brilliant strike force. This is a
Liverpool side with two outstanding forwards and in Henderson and Sterling,
midfielders who are playing the best football of their careers carrying the team.
There is no question Aly Cissokho is as poor a defender as seen at
Anfield for many a year. The French
International possesses very little positional sense, is flimsy in the tackle and
going forward adds very little threat.
Kolo Toure was exposed for the second game in succession. His lack of pace and indecision was shown up
by a revitalised Benteke, he looked slow and inept. I don’t expect to see neither he nor Cissokho
gracing Anfield’s hallowed turf next season.
Lambert and his Villa side with more lethal finishing should have had
the game wrapped up by half-time. In the
opening minute Benteke’s prodigious leap and flick header left Agbonlahor
bearing down on goal. The England
striker explicably shot wide with only Mignolet to beat.
Villa controlled possession and at times left us floundering
against a side who had only won one of their last seven league games. Westwood shooting straight at Mignolet and
Ciaran Clark’s header thudding against the post should put the game out of
sight.
Agbonlahor lay open Liverpool’s lethargy, brilliantly putting himself
up against Toure, slowing him up and then beating him to the by-line to cut the
ball across for Weimann, leaving Gerrard in his wake, to tap home.
Mignolet looking shot to pieces, flailed at the ball allowing
Benteke to nod home unopposed. Rodgers has
a choice to make on whether to keep faith in a goalkeeper whose mistakes have
proven costly this season.
It looked bleak especially with Suarez and Sturridge living on
scraps up front with Countinho having moved inside unable to provide the
quality service they require. But with
quality strikers one chance is usually all they require.
Excellent interchange on the edge of box between Coutinho, Suarez
and Henderson, resulted in deft flick by the latter through to Sturridge to
chip over the onrushing Guzan to give Liverpool a lifeline in the second minute
of injury time.
Lucas replaced the ineffective Coutinho at the break with Steven
Gerrard moving further forward which provided dividends almost immediately. He devastating through ball to Suarez sent the
Uruguayan surging in the penalty area before being brought down by Guzan as he
attempted to go past him.
Gerrard made no mistake from the spot.
Suarez showed his impudence and sharpness of mind with a quickly
taken free-kick from 40 yards which floated just over the bar with Gurzon back
peddling. Delph in turn, produced an exquisite
piece of skill leaving Lucas flat footed and then from 25 yards bending the
ball just beyond the post.
Once again we fail to win a game in which Suarez didn’t
score. In the last half-hour of the game
and with Gerrard prompting and probing we failed to cause Villa defence much
concern. An instinctive shot by Suarez
which was easily saved, a shot by Jordan Henderson well saved low down by Guzon
and a 30 yard Suarez free-kick which was just off-target was all Liverpool
could muster in the last half hour and must be a concern to the manager.
Man
of the Match: Luis Suarez – not on the
score sheet, but played a vital part in both goals with his link up and play
and his running off the last man to put himself in a position to get the
penalty.
Critical
eye: I have said before that
Coutinho’s final ball is a concern and today was no exception. There’s in no denying his ability on the
ball, but given his position and the amount of possession he has he is integral
in terms of his creative output which at the moment he is not delivering.
His ineffectiveness was shown with Suarez coming more into the
game once Gerrard moved further up field.
It also brings into question Gerrard’s own position. If he is to remain in the team for the
foreseeable whether playing deep or further forward he requires a more powerful
midfield to help him and Liverpool certainly need that if we are to start games
with a quartet of Suarez, Sturridge, Coutinho and Sterling.
Jordan Henderson before the change in formation looked as though
he was playing in the centre by himself with Gerrard sitting in front of the
back four.
The transfer policy has left Liverpool with players like Cissokho
and Toure who are either not good enough or have seen their best days and for
us to compete we need better quality.
Bertrand showed enough in 81 minutes to know that Liverpool have missed
out in the absence of Enrique.
Glen Johnson looks a shadow of the dynamic player of last season
and is not offering much in either direction.
Should Martin Kelly be given his chance?
We lost two points to a side we should’ve have buried and it’s
disappointing once again that apart from Lucas the manager didn’t see the need
to use either Alberto, Aspas and Moses in the last quarter which says it all
about the quality of the Liverpool bench and his lack of trust in the personnel
on it.

Well we have again thrown away the opportunity to show what we are made of – producing our worst home first half performance of the season vs Villa.
ReplyDeleteWe were extremely lucky to go in at half time only 1-2 down as Villa ripped us to shreds with their power and pace. They played like they were the side fighting for Champions League places.
I totally blame Rodgers for that performance as he had a totally attacking side with no safety valve of a defensive midfield player who has the experience of playing the role.
Gerrard in that role is just not going to work as he has a more attacking mindset and is not the best at anticipating play.
Two dropped points we really need a favour from WBA tonight but I doubt it will happen.
The performance all round was pathetic, especially from the manager and it's not just me speaking from a position of hindsight.
DeleteAnyone who knows me will tell you that Steven Gerrard is my all time favourite player which makes being critical all the more difficult, but as Livi will tell you I have been lately. Livi asked me last week would I still play Gerrard and said whether he plays in a deeper role or further forward we have to deploy midfielders to do his running for him and give him the time and space on the ball. On Saturday, he couldn't get way from Weimann because the guy was younger and faster and positioned there to pressure him. If you look at Alonso who operates like a quarter-back sitting deep in the 'pocket' his midfielders buy him time to control the game and until Liverpool buy those types of players it's going to be difficult for Stevie to have similar influence back there.
Before the game David asked whether I'd play Sturridge so soon after coming back and I said yes, but on the proviso that either Coutinho or Sterling didn't play because I couldn't for the life me see how that attacking formation could win for the ball consistently (I went for Coutinho on the bench). I was stunned when David sent his sms with the starting line-up. At times it appeared as if Jordan Henderson was ploughing a loan thorough on his own in the middle and I was disappointed that the manager waited until they scored to change the formation and that Steven Gerrard, who in playing so deep and with his vast experience could see what was happening, failed to instigate any change and that's one of the areas where we miss Jamie Carragher, his organisational abilities.
If Lucas is injured long-term I think it's criminal in terms of the board and the manager not coming together to provide cover early on. All our challengers and that includes Spurs and Everton have a
plethora of midfielders to choose from in central areas. We were relying on a veteran and midfieders in Allen and Lucas who have returned from long-term injuries and we don't possess one truly powerhouse player in that area. If Lucas is injured long-term it means we are down to Gerrard, Allen and Jordan Henderson at least two players short with not one reserve player designated to provide cover.
The amount of ball Cissokho is seeing down the left makes Enrique's absence seem like a chasm, even though he has his faults defensively. Players coming from the continent deserve time to settle, but the thing that worries me about him is how weak he is in the tackle and his positional sense. He always seems to drift over to the centre-half position. I was thinking why would Brendan buy all those centre-halfs and no cover in left-back? Then I remembered that when he bought Sakho he was also brought into cover left-back and we've already seen this season how successful that's been!
When Gerrard moved further upfield, while he didn't provide the drive he certainly provided some creativity and it's my bone of contention with Coutinho, that more than his finishing I would argue his importance is his supply lines to the strikers and lately that's been way off. In fact, his final ball has been dreadful.
By the close of this transfer window if we come out with nothing (as I write rumours are circulating that a bid for Saleh is imminent) I think a bid for a Champions League place will dissipate.
We set up all wrong, showed Villa a total lack of respect with our formation.
Delete· Stevie G cannot play in a two man midfield
· Stevie G cannot play as the deep lying holding midfielder
· I know we have injuries but our defence is absolutely shocking at the moment
· Mignolet is currently costing us a goal per game
· Brendan Rodgers should stop talking us up before games, pride comes before a fall and every time he gets carried away in his pre match pressers we end up dropping points
· Hopefully John and Tom saw enough on Saturday to persuade them to loosen the purse strings
Totally agree on all points Baz.
DeleteFew weeks ago we sitting top of the premiership, and we looked unbeatable.
Deletevery disappointing, and yet again we blew it...just shows what it really takes a team not only to compete, but show strength and character, and consistency in each game, getting the job done, tack tics right, and that is 3 points.
Villa - came on us like pack of wolfs, and we a week defence up, Kolo Toure was poor, SG treading back in defence? all over the place.
lucky to be a draw.
Kolo Toure was exceptionally poor – constantly out of position trying and failing to cover for crap Cissokho’s gallops down the left flank – We need Agger and Sakho to come back as better alternatives to Skrtel.
DeleteOur goalkeeper has completely lost his confidence and I am concerned that he will continue to let us down at least once every game from now until the end of the season – he looked like the answer but over the long term does not quite have the mental strength it takes to be a top level keeper. At Sunderland he had to make constant saves so was always in the game, at Liverpool the keeper needs to have excellent concentration levels as he will not always be in the game. That is where Mignolet has been found wanting for me.
Kolo Toure still thinks we can win the league – if he really meant that he would have shown more desire to cut out one of those crosses for one of the Villa goals. Clueless defender !!!
Kolo Toure needs to watch the game again, and look at his errors, mistakes than give himself a slap!
DeleteThe truth of the matter is that Rodgers dodged the big decision, Sturridge had to start as one of our main goal scorers, Sterling/Hendo recent performances earned them a start, Coutinho plays as the creative link between the strikers. So it comes down to Gerrard and Lucas for last spot, and in the week when Chelsea spend £20M bringing in a defensive midfield player they let go, proving the importance of the role in the modern game, we drop our only defensive midfielder to the bench and play the legend!
DeleteHow none of our players saw the guy racing like harbour shark into our box for first goal left me wondering how best they read the game. BR changed the formation at after time and Villa was kind of curtail and their keeper was the one working hardest. Tim Sherwood is already running his mouth of top 4 being the barest minimum for Spurs. Well WBA will only being themselves a favour if they turn up against Everton tonight.
DeleteI agree on one aspect of that Rodgers did dodge a massive call – but I also expect more from Coutinho when he is in the team – he has really gone totally off the boil this season and we need the old wizardry to come back or he will need to be dropped.
DeleteWhat is making me mad about our team is that we only play once a week so we should really be up for every game but on Saturday evening were just too lethargic and to me that is not acceptable – we wanted to stay in contention with the leaders but just let Villa dominate us when we should have been in control of our own destiny.
David - couldn't agree more, we should be open for glory each game as we are not tied playing Champions league for one, but we cant even do that.
Deleteit comes down to hunger and desire to play, Yes will will loose some, but Saturday performance we bad, no fight to take control of the game and turn it around.
hope was so high for me to win!
Where on earth was Ally Cissoko? He went missing so was Johnson.
DeleteCissokho has a really bad habit of losing the ball in the attacking half of the field and then not tracking back to defend which means the other defenders are having to cover for him.
DeleteHe is the worst defender we have at the club and the sooner he goes the better for me.
Okay we get back to 2-2 but I can tell you if City, Chelski or Arsenal had equalised with half an hour left, the desire to win would have clinched the 3 points for them, I do not see the same hunger and desire in our boys unfortunately. You see the character to fight back but not the desire to win.
