Chelsea and the Manchester clubs are not going to stand
still and it’s highly unlikely that UEFA’s fair plays rules will curtail their
spending to the extent that it will bring them back for us to challenge. So are the Liverpool board being naïve in
their thinking regarding buying older players?
They say you never win anything with youngsters and one
has to wonder whether the board actually understands what it takes to compete
for a Champions League place let alone win a Premiership title?
Steven Gerrard’s comments about our possible interest in
Wesley Sneijder says to me that he recognises what it takes and what is
currently missing.
He said, “He’ll do.
He’s a top player, I think we’ve seen it at every major tournament he
delivers; He went on to say, “He’s done it in the Champions League for
years. We’ll have to see on his wage
demands, he gets paid well and he’ll have all kinds of options I’m sure but I’d
love nothing better than to see him in a red shirt.”
Liverpool are at a crossroads. We’ve been there before with Torres. But with the young players in tow it more
resembles the Arsenal situation and Wenger’s steadfast belief that Fabregas and
moreover Van Persie would stay.
Listening to the last named in his televised interview before the Spurs
game, one could actually hear him purring about playing alongside Rooney and co
and we should not take it for granted that Suarez love for the club and
Merseyside will automatically preclude him from joining another club.
We all heard Torres eulogising about how the city of Liverpool
very much reminded him of the part of Madrid where he came from, yet he left to
join one of our mortal enemies.
Gerrard was also quoted in The Daily Mirror saying “In
general, I like the direction the club is going in, but the harsh reality is
that we still need two or three big players who can help.”
“We were short before the last deadline and I think we
struggled to find consistency because of that.
The gap between us and, say,
Manchester United is now severe, but I believe that – on our day – we can beat
any team in the league.”
“When we don’t play well, we don’t win. We need to find a way to win games when we’re
not really at out top level.”
While some may some may say this is a player thinking
about the final few years of his career, anyone who has followed his career
knows that he loves the club and what he says makes sense and is at odds with
comments emanating from the board.
Iain Ayre said after the signing of Daniel Sturridge,
“People may feel that they want to criticise the fact that we didn’t have an
additional striker,
“But at what price would you sacrifice spending for
something that is not in the long-term interests of the club versus what we
just did which was getting a great price on a great player in Daniel Sturridge?
“If we had spent that money in the summer, then we
wouldn’t have done that trade recently.
It may have left us short, but the pieces just did not come
together. We’ve come through that period
now and still feel it was right decision.”
From where I’m standing leaving the squad threadbare in
the striking department was a bad piece of decision making. As I look up hearing the roar from the
television, Spurs have just equalised with almost the last kick of the ball and
the goal scorer is… Clint Dempsey.
Should we fail to get 4th place by a few
points I know where I’d apportion blame if Luis Suarez leaves as a consequence.
As captain, I guess within certain parameters captains have to say what the club want to say in terms of the direction of the club. Maybe Gerrard is off message by saying that we need a couple more big players. I have never known a club to give such mixed messages. If we are determined to get into the champions league then we need at least a couple more big signings to come in. If we think, oh it would be nice to finish in the top ten then we could just carry on as we are. Genuinely, lets face it, we lack ambition.
ReplyDeleteSomthing KD used to say "we'll see where we are at the end of the season."
DeleteNot good enough, players also need to show hunger ambition to win games. Dempsey is not in our vision any more...
Livi, I would say Stevie sees it from the point of view that it’s just him and Suarez than can change a game consistently (until Sturridge) and for a club of our size its not good enough. When we were chasing shadows in the first-half at Old Trafford it must have really brought it home particularly as given all their fire power they still went out and beat off Man City for Van Persie.
DeleteAlso, hopefully he statement may carry some weight as he also repeated on Sky this morning saying he hoped that Sneijder deal comes off. What will be interesting is to see how the board, namely Messrs Werner and Ayre react to his pronouncements.
I think the board still seem to be licking their wounds from our previous misdameanours in the transfer market over the past couple of years, excluding Suarez and Sturridge. Maybe thats understandable but what they may feel is that they cant trust a manager to spend money on BIG players.
DeleteOf course Stevie is right to urge the club to get another couple of BIG players in - i'm sure he'd like to be back in the Champions league too. But as a squad, we lack quality in depth. The thing about youngsters like Sterling and Suso is that we shouldn't have to rely on them. By definition, young players often struggle with consistency which is one of the reasons why the squad needs depth, in quality.
That's part of the problem too many youngsters and not enough experinced player. Man U stepped up by buying RVP. Quality and experinced in every penny.... Somthing that we would never do
DeleteAs for FSG trusting the manager, they made a big play about making everyone know he was their choice, so it’s pretty churlish to give the impression that they’ve been stung.
DeleteI’ve said before that I believe it to be partly that, but if you know anything about baseball they did something similar with the Red Sox when they arrived and I think it’s something the organisation believes in. But, I think there are financial worries with the organisation because they sold $250 million worth of contracts to the Dodgers last September.
None of this adds up to me at all. Facts seem to be that the media machine at LFC seems to be running into overdrive with conflicting messages. One day someone in authority will say "gonna bring in a couple more", next minute we dont need anyone. I dont know about baseball but to me we just seem disfunctional on too many levels.
DeleteI saw this...
ReplyDeleteGalatasaray agree Sneijder deal
Last Updated: January 20 2013, 21:18 GMT
Galatasaray have agreed a deal to sign Holland midfielder Wesley Sneijder from Inter Milan, the Turkish club have confirmed.
The 28-year-old has been locked in contract talks with Galatasaray since Inter accepted a 10million euro bid for his services two weeks ago.
A statement on galatasaray.org read: "The transfer of Wesley Sneijder from Inter Milan has been agreed.
"The conditions of the deal will be made public and the player will sign the contract after health checks."
Were we actually interested in signing him or was he considered too old.
DeleteI am fed up with our defeatist mentality - we are going on a theory that we can't buy a player if he is over 23 - this theory will not work long term as the players brought through will get fed up not winning any trophies and then go to teams with more ambition.
DeleteFor 8 mil he would have been a bargain even if we had him for a phew years, no point considering players and not going for them, just makes us week in this market, first Demps now Sneijder, just imagine we brought them two in.....
DeleteIm not sure if we were genuinely intersted in Scneider. Really dont know what to think other than that we ste being led on a very merry dance!
DeleteIan Aire and a LFC delegation are flying to Italy tomorrow to trash out a deal to bring Coutinho to Anfield. LFC have offered 8million euros and Inter want 12million euros. The move is complicated by the recent emergence of interest in the player from Southampton who are willing to meet Inters asking price.
ReplyDeleteBeen reading all about Coutinho...seems that most journalists think he will be too small and frail for the EPL....
DeleteYou can never tell until they get here. Similar things were said about Modric before Spurs took a punt. I like the idea of taking him on loan for the next 6 months with an option to buy but it sounds like Milan want straight cash.
DeleteI remember being really impressed with him in first half when Inter went three nil up against spurs before bale's hat-trick a couple of years and he looks very fast and skillful and scored 5 in 16 or something on loan at espanyol which aint bad for a young attacking midfielder...my only concern would be that he may be quite similar in style to sterling and suso...
Deletethought southampton would prob come in for him as their new manager is the old espanyol manager i think which I suppose is encouraging as having worked at close quarters with him is prepared to make him his first major signing...
