Dismal first half performance by LFC prompts another defeat - Man Utd 2 Liverpool 1

The pre-match talk was of the shootout between the top two strikers in the country Van Persie and our sorcerer Suarez and also the disrespectful statement by Alex Ferguson stating "Suarez is laden with controversy"

I would have used the latter as a further incentive for the team just before kickoff. when the team was announced I was very disappointed to hear that Sturridge had been left on the subs bench and also the out of form Joe Allen had again been picked ahead of Henderson.

The opening segment of the game we showed none of our usual energy and possession football, this was not a problem as long as we kept compact and limited any balls into Van Persie's feet from their midfield.

The surprising part of the first half as it went along was how easily the Utd midfield of Carrick and Cleverley dominated our three man midfield of Lucas/Gerrard and Allen.

The action was mainly in our half with Suarez isolated up front as if the rest of the players were not on the same planet!

With no attempts made by us on goal after the first 18 mins it was inevitable that Van Persie would get a chance. His excellent movement deceived Agger which he put away giving Reina no chance.

For the rest of the first half Utd easily controlled the game and we didn't look a threat at all, just before we got to half time United nearly doubled their lead when a disastrous wayward pass from Joe Allen gave Welbeck a chance of a shot but it was blocked brilliantly by Agger.

Shortly Cleverley volleyed just wide and not long after in a massive goalmouth scramble inside our six yard box which culminated in Skrtel hacking Van Persie's flick off the line to stop us from going in at the half time break two goals down.

My pre match concerns about the weakness of Joe Allen in big games had again come to fruition in a match situation which we now hoped that Rodgers would remedy at half time. We also prayed that Sturridge would be given a deserved run out after his impressive cameo versus Mansfield in the Cup last weekend.

Rodgers elected to bring on Sturridge to replace Lucas to give us more attacking thrust but surprisingly left on the ineffectual Allen for the start of the second half.

The substitution had an early effect when we saw the normally busy but today very subdued Suarez tee up Wisdom who shot well wide.

The very poor Allen then gave away the free kick from which Utd doubled their lead when poor defending by Glen Johnson enabled Vidic to inadvertently deflect in Evra's header from Van Persie's free kick.

We then delivered the perfect response to Utd's second goal when our new striker Sturridge reacted quickest to tap into the back of the net after Gerrard powered past a tackle like Gerrard of old before drilling a superb shot which De Gea was unable to hold.

After three months out of the side there was a welcome return to first team football for Borini in place of Sterling as we desperately searched for the equaliser.

The relentless pressure almost told with Sturridge twice coming close to getting us the draw our spirited second half performance deserved.

Utd held on for the points and are now an embarrassing 24 points ahead of us!
Kop-Post Man of the Match - Daniel Sturridge - come on for the second half and showed again the potential and skill in his game linking up very impressively with Suarez, following up well for his goal, tracking back when he lost the ball and generally being a nuisance to the opposition. He needs to develop his composure in front of goal as he needs to realise hitting a shot across a keeper has more benefits nine times out of ten with Suarez more than capable of feeding on the tap-ins from those types of shots.
Positives - Second half display forced Utd back and had worried them enough that Ferguson made two defensive subs towards the end of the game.
Negatives - Rodgers team selection in the big games has been found wanting and has cost us dear in all our big games so far.
Sterling and Downing were both ineffective when we needed both to be on top of their games today. Sterling's dip in form is down to playing so many games at such a young age without being given a rest,  for Downing there is no such excuse and his continued poor performances emanating in him being picked every game by Rodgers baffles me.
The central midfield struggles fall totally at Brendan Rodgers' feet, his decision to play Joe Allen in place of Jordan Henderson verges on criminal considering the form the two have been in, which couldn't be more opposite.
There will soon be cries of nepotism if this continues because barring illness or injury Allen plays ahead of Henderson. In this game Allen looked lost and frankly out of his depth and with Lucas off colour and Steven Gerrard less disciplined, our midfield was totally at sea.
That we looked better in the second half with only Gerrard and Allen is something I believe is more attributable to United sitting deeper and us showing more attacking intent than an indication that Lucas is the weak link.
Far from it, as moving forward from this Henderson or Shelvey should now be the first options in the team to play alongside Gerrard with Lucas being the defensive midfielder with Allen now the reluctant back up to Lucas because Allen does not having any attacking impetus to assist us in the attacking side of our game.
It will be interesting to see Rodgers next team selection for the home game vs Norwich.

LFC - Team vs Man Utd
Reina, Wisdom, Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Lucas Leiva, Allen, Gerrard, Downing, Suarez, Sterling

Subs:-Jones, Carragher, Robinson, Henderson, Shelvey, Borini, Sturridge

Attendance - 75,501

  1. I said to dedlfc the author of the piece above before the game that I felt that Sturridge should play as I felt it would be a statement of intent and there movement would worry the Man U backline. This was a game we should of being trying to win with Everton and Spurs drawing, West Brom and the betting that Arsenal may lose (which they did).

The midfield were woeful in the first-half. Raheem Sterling has been playing for the last few weeks as if he’s a bit leggy, he didn’t seem capable of going past his mind and to often his passes found the wrong man. Stewart Downing had opportunities through the match to get his final ball into the area, but his final ball was atrocious. Too often his final ball is along the ground and is easily cut out, when sometimes you want him to provide a quality ball in for the striker and midfield players to get on the end of. Too be honest it’s patently not good enough for an international football and one goal doesn’t maketh a class football.

Then we come to Joe Allen who once again was found wanting. He appears to lack confidence and where once he was king of the square ball even these weren’t getting to there destination. At the moment he looks behind Henderson who drives forward for a start and provides more robust defensive cover and Shelvey who offers a goal threat and also drive going forward. At times in the first-half we looked weak in the tackle and our passing was just not crisp and direct enough.

In the second half playing a four four two we looked more balance and Gerrard seemed to be off the leash. The goal was vintage Gerrard, walking through a tackle and getting a fearce shot on target. The link-up play between Suarez and Sturridge and poses questions for the future as to whether the manager may start on occasions with a 4-4-2.

On their first goal the huge chunk of space out on their left was disappointing and allowed them to get in a pinpoint cross and Agger who was otherwise excellent, will probably be disappointed in the way Van Persie easily disposed of him and for the second goal Glen Johnson who barring Suarez has been Liverpool’s best player this season will not need reminding about the way he let Evra run past him.

The match proved we are short of at least four top class players and the jury is out on some of starters. It’s hard to keep hearing we played well in chunks and there are loads of positives, because at the end of the day we are not buying enough and other teams are.

The saving grace at the moment is that of the clubs competing for fourth only Spurs look way ahead of us.

    1. I thought Joe Allen was a let down at Old Trafford, giving the ball away. I feel ashamed when he puts on a Red shirt. Why did Rodgers drag him with him from Swansea? Me no understand!!

I think we did far better in the 2nd half, notice the difference when Danny boy came on? Just as the commentator was about to sing the praises of Steven Gerrard, he uncharacteristically feebly gave the ball away OOPS.

Ahh well at least we got a ball in a net, more than what Arsenal did. Ha ha!

    6. Rodgers talked after the match about a lack of squad depth but he spent £26 million on Borini and Allen and so far they haven’t improved the squad at all, Borini is an £11 million bench warmer and Allen has the physical presence of a jockey and tackles like he’s on ice skates. We can’t afford to waste money like that. On the up side Sturridge looked like a handful yesterday.

    7. I personally think that this game would have suited Jonjo S.

    8. Being a bit harsh about Borini there mate as he’s just come back quite a serious injury. One game a season doesn’t make. Have faith in BR – the side’s young and got promise. One or two more quality signings (a CAM and solid centre half) and a solid pre-season this summer and who knows what can happen next season!

    10. Am fed up of saying we should have got something out of a game. We were p1sspoor in the first half, after a promising opening 10 minutes and Joe Allen and Stewart Downing have to take responsibility for this. Both kept losing the ball which broke up our fluency and meant the others were carrying them. This bred a lack of composure which meant we didn't offer a thing in the first half. We also didn't put a tackle in for an hour. How many times would one of our players stand off and let them pass around us? It was embarrasing, far too easy and its not good enough.

Good to see 3 strickers on the pitch and Borini looked good considering he's way off match fit. Begs the questions why we got rid of Maxi, however. Sturridge brilliant, well played that lad. No service up front until then, cause we only had 9 players and 2 liabilities so I don't think Sterling or Suarez played particularly badly.

Yet again, against one of the top sides, we had a good spell (last 25 mins) where we showed that we can dominate teams - they couldn't compete with us and I'd say we were the better side for most of the second half - which Fergie pretty much admitted. Why didn't we start like this? We need to make sure we extend this to whole games and start getting points on the board. Football is about confidence, the top teams have the self belief and determination to win week in week out. We don't, we're a million miles away which given Pepe, Danny Agger, Martin Skrtel, Glen, Stevie, Lucas and Suarez is completely beyond me. BR need to instill a winning mentality urgently. If we win pretty great. I don't care if we don't, we need to dig out results.

3 times Joe Allen was at fault in the first half and its a miracle all 3 didn't result in losing a goal. To his credit he was much better in the second half, after everyone's shock that Lucas and not Joe was taken off. He and Downing should have to play their way in to the team by showing how good they are, not being an automatic choice. Sadly Downing reverted to type after a handful of good games.

We need competition for the centre of the park and we need a complete left winger not someone who can't go past the opposition nor shoot, nor tackle.

      Rant over.

  2. Sorry to be the harbinger of doom but if we don’t get our act together this season and start climbing the table then Suarez will be off in the Summer and BR could come in for some serious stick from sections of the LFC support.

We are all happy to give him time as long as he’s making progress but six months in can anybody really say that we are playing better than we were under Dalglish? Another 8th place finish this season would suggest not.

  3. Luckily the club aint being run by harbingers of doom. BR has only had half a season to stamp his game philosophy on a young and inexperienced side. Most of the season has been spent with only one fit striker. And it’s taking time for some of the new signings to settle in (for example, Lucas was crap for ages until he suddenly found his form and started banging out performances). Time and patience is what is required. We simply aint got the squad depth to compete with the Mancs clubs, Chelsea, Spurs and the Gooners at the mo. Plus Everton and WBA are not doing too badly either. So 7th or 8th is realistically what LFC can hope for this season. After all, Ferguson wasn’t an instant success. Took him 25 years plus to put them at the top of the pile. LFC simply doesn’t need more instability and chaos. What BR needs is more time and space to get on with what would frankly be a difficult job for any good manager to take forward.

    1. I agree with you Barry, we need to see progress rather than rhetoric. You can never be sure with BR whether he would rather cash in on Suarez in the summer. We should be looking at bringing more players in to ensure that we climb up the table. The problem is that we spent £30 million in the Summer. Rather than pay the £11 million for Borini, we could have bought Sturridge + 1. I keep getting reminded that when Spurs spend £15 million, they get Moussa Dembele – a class act. We spend £15m and get Joe 90 Allen!

I was disappointed that Sturridge didn’t start but glad that he at least came on at half time and should now be a first choice starter in future, until we go back into the transfer market to pick up another striker. We’re still several players short – 24 points off the top is dreadful! As Barry says, we need to get our act together.

    2. With Henderson in the squad already the need to buy another average central midfielder namely Joe Allen was just not warranted – he hasn’t brought anything extra to the team and I feel we are just in the same spot as last season.

Jury is still out on Rodgers only because it is his first season – but next season will be the real barometer on where we are heading as a club.

    3. Livi, couldn't agree more.... why do we always end up paying silly money for players that don't perform, then we pretty much stuck with them.

In football you need to improve your team each season to compete and stay competitive ....... Sturridge should be first choice too for me...

Agree or disagree, this team is not ready, manager not ready, I am very upset that we as a team cannot bring the game to the top teams and step up the game, we should of gone all out at Man U and show them that we can put up a fight.
What do we have to do as supporters for the team to get their finger out and start playing football? The players are being paid if they play good or bad and all I can see is them playing in words I cannot put in this email. To make it matters worse my daughter came to me and asked me to buy her a Liverpool kit for Christmas I was well happy but team is playing for me to be happy.

    6. Before the game said to David and Karl that we should've started Sturridge and Iain will testify to that as I was sitting next to him at The Ruse, the LFC pub in Borough. An hour of Sturridge alongside Suarez would've given their centre-half pairing more than enough worry given the movement and pace in front of them they saw in the last half hour.

First half was dreadful, woeful call it what you will, it resembled men against boys the midfield was like powder puff. It was like we up against Petit and Vieira, sorry not good enough. I was at the WBA game first match of the season and technically Joe Allen looked a class act, but doubts have been creeping in for quite a while. Every time we come against a 'dogs of war' midfield he becomes a kitten, tossed aside like Bagpuss! And that's not the best pairing he'll face this season, they should let him train with Andre Wisdom at least he put a serious shift!

What is is with Downing that given time and space to deliver a cross the ball invariably comes in along the ground (should call him Sir Barnes Wallace) rather than delivered in a way where the strikers can attack the ball? If you can't go past a defender for pace, then you either have to drop a shoulder to wrong foot the defender or give yourself some time and space and whip it in like Beckham. Dracula would've flourish in goal in the first half... not one decent cross!

Sturridge's goal was Stevie of old, rampaging through the tackle, unleashing a shot. Didn't see the Man Utd centre-mids in the final 30 mins. But we still a need a midfield powerhouse in the engine room because too many of our players fit into BRs style of play without being able to drive the midfield forward, we need to be flexible and have different types of players. We struggle to defend sent pieces now because of the lack of height throughout the team.

I have to say we need quality to back up what's already there. There is no reason why we'll suddenly start getting top notch players in the transfer market when we've been struggling to acquire them in the last five years. Too many times over the last 5 years we've lost key players when they just moving into their peak years, Alonso, Mascherano, Torres.and I would just hate to see another one walk out.

If we really haven't got any money, which the more I see and hear seems a distinct possibility, Brendan should swallow his pride and get back Carroll if it's feasible. We shouldn't be in the business of strengthening someone else's squad. The boy could be doing a useful job for us in the last third of matches in both boxes!

  4. Freddy, I share your concern, but perhaps what we do need at the club, although previously rejected by BR, is a director of football proceedings to make up for the lack of understanding at board level. Some might be happy to wait indefinitely, in fact I don’t mind waiting a little while but I do want to see progress and appropriate interventions in the transfer market.

Even if we did get Clint Dempsey back in the Summer, as well as Sturridge, we still need to buy another striker in my opinion and I just don’t think BR gets it. I think we’re extremely lucky that Suarez has been so prolific following the number of blanks he drew last season.

    1. I think we all realise that the club needs stability and BR deserves time and the benefit of the doubt. Six months into the project and still I’m not at all sure what to make of our manager. He speaks really well and he clearly has a set of principles about how he wants to the team to play but then he’ll baffle everyone by starting Suzo against Stoke. Time will tell, but I think it’s definitely realistic to say that if green shoots aren’t evident by around the end of next season we’ll have the right to be critical. At the moment the fact remains that we are six months into the season and we haven’t beaten a team in the top 10 and that is a cause for concern. Patience is a virtue and it’s a big job for any manager but treading water in mid table while clubs like Everton overtake us and the top four continue to widen the gap year on year is not a good idea.
