In a dramatic week which saw the dismissal of Damien Comolli, Kenny Dalglish, as he has been throughout his footballing career was the key figure in the build-up to the FA Cup Semi-Final. The turmoil the club found itself in could be gaged by the fact that Doni and not Brad Jones was listed as the no.2 goalkeeper to Reina in the ‘Meet the team’ page section of the programme and Doni was listed as no 2 to Jones on match day lists.
We were stunned when the news filtered through that Jordan Henderson, despite some questionable form would start ahead of the likes of Maxi, Kuyt and Bellamy. Agger returned to the fold not for Carragher as had been expected, but for Enrique.
The atmosphere was terrific with the both sets of fans coming together to produce magnificent atmospheric conditions and I should add a minutes silence to remember the 23 anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster which as you would expect was perfectly observed.
As if stung by the obvious criticism from the owners, Liverpool started on the front foot and Jay Spearing may feel he should have hit the target inside the area from Andy Carroll’s pull back.
The sides appeared to be feeling each other out with Everton leaving Jelavic to plough a loan furrow upfront and it was he who broke the deadlock, when following indecision on the edge of the area between Agger and Carragher, the later slashed his clearance against Tim Cahill which rebounded into the path of Jelavic who calmly dispatched to give Everton the lead.
Liverpool upped the tempo without looking cohesive or convincing. The imbalanced nature of the attack with Henderson disciplined in defence, but overly underwhelming in attack increased the need for Downing to provide ammunition for our underused strikers. In two instances he attacked veteran Neville with two crosses in the box, one just out of reach of the flailing Carroll.
Continuing in the same vain and switching wings Downing brilliantly ghosted past Bianes early in second-half, before standing up a fantastic cross to the far post for Andy Carroll. On Grand National day, it looked a racing certainty that the ‘big man’ would score as we peeled away to celebrate. There was total amazement with the realisation that he had managed to head wide and we hoped it wasn’t a sign that we weren’t going to experience one of those days.
Everton began to drop off with decreasing intensity allowing Liverpool to take full control with Suarez and Carroll becoming increasingly threatening. It was no surprise that is was Suarez who brought his side back on level terms when he pre-empted Distin’s under hit back pass to drive in on goal, where angling his body he brilliantly bent the ball past Tim Howard with the outside of his mercurial right boot setting the Liverpool end of Wembley alight to set off an unimaginable roar.
Even with almost half hour to go Everton’s best chance of winning the game was either from a set piece or from Jelavic making something out of nothing - he came close shooting into the side netting. Almost immediately, from a melee Carroll screwed the ball disappointingly wide when a touch of composure was all that was needed to get the shot on target.
Dalglish sensing a chance to win the game in normal time, brought on both Maxi and Bellamy, replacing Henderson and Downing respectively. And it was the inimitable Bellamy who provided a sumptuous whipped cross from a free-kick, for Carroll to back-header into the corner of the net leaving Howard stranded. It was nothing more than Liverpool deserved.
Kop Post Man of The Match: Andy Carroll - Suarez was the undoubted instigator, but Carroll was unbowed from his glaring miss and shot past the post and seemed to get stronger as they game went on. Carroll said, " I believe in myself every day. I've had some criticism but I just keep on going.
"I had a few chances and should have scored earlier, but I kept working at it. It's the best feeling ever."
Critical eye: Liverpool won despite, the manager going in with three centre-half’s and Jordan Henderson - the class of Suarez and the power of Carroll shone through.
Downing showed signs of being the creative force with a couple of stellar crosses, but needs to become a more consistent element and add to his goals tally.
Martin Skrtel goes from strength to strength, and has now taken up the mantle from Carragher.
Special mention to Brad Jones who showed, after a nervy start, a lot of strength of character in commanding the area with some strong punches and catches under pressure.
Best quote - Jamie Carragher on Andy Carroll "He'll be remembered for ever. A goal against Everton in the semi-final, that goal is worth £35 million on its own."
Absolutely delighted for Andy Carroll getting the winner in the last two games that will do heaps for his confidence.
ReplyDeleteThe turning point was when he missed the easy headed sitter in the second half it made him even more determined to be the hero of the day.
Special mention to Brad Jones who never let us down on the day.
Suarez was again outstanding with his perpetual movement especially in the second half.
We made it hard for ourselves but we got their, in some style.
ReplyDeleteAndy's goal was coming, just a matter of time, and def deserved goal.
Suarez class goal. Hopefully this win will give the team confidence that they can go on and win now the final. YWWA
Saturday was AMAZING!!!
ReplyDeleteJust ANAZING
Suarez deserved Man of Match
Valerie G
Valerie - you got that right! I was looking for you on Saturday and at one point thought you might be the FA Cup mascot walking around the ground. Please confirm that it wasn't you?
DeleteNo, I was on a segregation line, wearing a bright orange coat 12 rows from the pitch. Preventing the Liverpool fans battering the Everton fans, but everyone was well behaved.
DeleteI managed to get my hands on a ticket at 5 o'clock on Friday evening, couldn't believe there was hardly any real segregation after the game with reds and blues all walking down wembley way after the game to the tube and didn't see one bit of bother. be surpirsed if things are as cordial on 5th of may against chelsea, especailly after their fans scumbag antics yesterday....
DeleteMassive win - poor first half performance but I always thought as long as we didn't go in two down we'd come back to win as knew everton would bottle it and sit back. Thankfully distin gave us helping hand as we were starting to look a bit frustrated after carroll's miss and jay spearing's over hit pass saw two golden chances go begging....
Hopefully carroll will be given run in team till end of season and can get a few more goals in the bank and go into next season with confidence high
Maybe we shouldn't play Carragher in the final, just a thought!!!
DeleteI just think Chelsea will be over confidence that they thrashed Spurs and Liverpool to them will be a walk over. That will help us. Surely we will be the underdog come May the 5th. Everton in my mind were slightly over confidence judging from our poor run of results in recent past and the feel good factor among Everton players was there for everyone one to see when they went out for the warm up at Wembley. I am sure Mr Merson the pundit on Sky Sport can shut up, last week he confidently predicted that Everton will beat Liverpool at the Semi-Final and as well finish above us in the League. One down, one to go.
DeleteRight now all being well I can't see them achieving any!!
Luke - good for you. Seems like you get to see quite a lot of the games, somehow.
DeleteI was reading the papers on Saturday morning and Carra was quoted as saying that he accepts that he is no longer an automatic choice but that he is right behind the team and will never leave. He seemed quite content with that – he went on to say that he knew the day would come when he was no longer an automatic choice but hoped that he would get a few games. He must have been equally surprised as me to see his name on the team sheet. I’m pleased for him now – I know how much this means to him but its now time to put sentiments to one side - he could of cost us the game.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I got a bit irritated at the game. Downing had put in a couple of excellent crosses in the first half from the left hand side. Then all of a sudden, Henderson turns up on the left like a fish out of water. I didn’t think after putting in quality crosses from the left that Downing should swap sides. I shouted at him, as we were only 3 rows from the pitch, to get over onto the other wing – I think he heard me as he had looked round. Two minutes later, he put in a delightful cross for Carroll’s headed chance that he missed. Needless to say, I had to give him his due. I thought he was really unlucky to be substituted.
Had only been to one game in last about six seasons since leaving uni in liverpool but been really lucky this year as mate's couldn't make it to soem of the games.
DeleteThink I'll struggle for final though as didn't come through for carling cup final when he couldn't make it himself....
Anyway, always wanted to go to a massive game at wembley and they don't come much bigger than semi-final derby....
I agree on Carra and would def opt for reinstating the agger/srktel partnership and enrique at left back...but have to say aside from the goal (for which agger was also culpable) thought he had a good game on saturday and dealt well with jelavic who looks like a great signing - (have to confess that when we were linked with him in december i wasn't overly pleased thinking he'd struggle to make step up but he looks a great finisher)....
DeleteI can only really remember downing putting one good ball in from left in first half and was actually getting frustrated with him seemingly being reluctant to take on phil neville. Think he did better on the right and I personally much prefer him there as think he's less predictable and he's able to stand a good ball up with right but defenders always seem to think he'll want to come inside on his left....
After a couple of slightly ropey performances srktel was back to his best and though he didn't have his best game in liverpool think johnson improves us significantly as a team....
Very well done to the boys who as I predicted turned the form book upside down and won vs our local rivals in a massive semi-final!
DeleteI need to also say I was appalled by Chelski fans lack of respect by not observing a minutes silence yesterday and pleased to hear that their club has said today they were embarrassed by their fans behaviour.
Desperately want to beat them now on May 5th!
Edet again reminded his son who supports our sad neighbours that form is temporary, class is permanent!

It was just great to be there. We so close to the pitch and we had this idiot (not Karl), giving Downing dogs abuse until after half-time I said to him what's wrong with the you, he's just put in a pin point cross which Carroll headed wide. He meekly said that he was in the bar...!
DeleteSuarez covered some serious ground, was running down everything in the second-half and moving into the channels and was providing room for Carroll - great finish for the goal. Downing delivered two crosses in each half, two high and two low, three out the four caused problems. Took him sometime to realise it was Phil Neville in front of him in the first-half and he soon made short work Baines in the second-half. Carragher, while you want all home grown players show his convictions, it's hard to watch him dropping so deep as soon the ball is kicked, because he lacks pace. He is often yards behind the rest of defenders trying to hold a line.
For once Kenny substitutions came when we were on top and won the game - Stealth Bomber Maxi was unlucky and not to put a more healthy piece of relish on the score line and Carroll after some choice misses showed courage to keep on keeping as we say in North London - superb delivery from Bellamy. After that piece of nastiness before the 2nd semi-final, Kenny's team talk before the final should be already formulated in his head.
David, it could not have been put any better. You see when you have the sons that support Everton and the second support Newcastle, you can understand the sort of double hassles I have to deal when we were going through that embarrassing loosing phase. John Barnes before the kickoff said in a game like this form flew out of the window and the league position with it. The team that turn up and want it most win the day. We did not turn up in the first half and the managed to score off side goal. The boys turn up in the second half and were without mincing words unplayable.
