Reds Saunter Into Last Eight

Liverpool went into the game knowing that victory would send us through to a quarter-final match Anfield against Stoke City.  Even without Bellamy and Agger, resting injuries for the Carling Cup Final, Dalglish made a statement of intent, with Carroll and Suarez up top and Stewart Downing starting out of the left and Henderson once again hoping to justify the manager’s trust in a free-wheeling midfield position.

In only the third minute Liverpool took the lead from a Gerrard corner when Skrtel did well to beat off the cover at the near post to glance the ball into the near post top corner. Liverpool continued to get forward with Downing crossing on the run from an incisive through ball by Adam, which caused a state of flux in the Brighton area and a quickly taken Henderson free-kick which Gerrard pulled wide from 20 yards.

Against the run of play Brighton equalised, following a needless free-kick given away by the recovering Henderson.  Lua Lua smashed a powerhouse free-kick which was disappointing from the point of view of the wall disappearing as if the shot was taken by Harry Potter.  While we continued to dominate, Brighton showed they could counter threateningly, with Lua Lua giving Glen Johnson as torrid time.  Suarez suddenly clicked into gear with a mazy run, wrong footing the defence before having a shot cleared off the line and Carroll from a stunning Gerard cross, not for the first time this season, heading over the bar when with goal at his mercy.

Just before the break Liverpool went deservedly ahead from Adam’s corner. Brighton’s punch happy goalkeeper looped the ball up in the air, which was deftly collected by the mercurial Uruguayan, taking two defender out on the way, before his shot blocked by the keeper was headed back towards goal by Johnson and inadvertently knocked in by Bridcutt unable get out of the way of the clearance.

Liverpool controlled possession at the start of the second-half much they had in the first, with Brighton seemingly deflated from the second goal coming so close to the break.  With Gerrard and Suarez began to link up nicely and Carroll holding the ball up and bringing team mates into play fans are beginning to see positives, especially bearing in mind this was the first time the three had started a match together this season.

The three played important roles in the third goal, with Suarez and finding Gerrard, who rolled the ball out to Downing, who driving down the left picked up his head cutting the ball back to Carroll who met the cross with a sweeping flourish coming on to the ball to leave Brezovan stranded and to all intents and purpose ending Brighton’s resolve. With Brighton’s resistance broken, the fourth was not long in coming with Gerrard powering through after mishap in the defence, following Henderson looping cross field ball,  to cut the ball back after having the his shot saved, with the unfortunate Bridcutt scoring second own goal.  The comedy of errors continued with Dunk turning the ball in when under very little pressure for the third own goal following Suarez cross.

Dalglish recognising the importance of getting Suarez back among the scoring ranks signalled for him to take the penalty after Kuyt was brought down from his through ball. He stuttered before, his penalty was easily saved by Brezovan.  It would not be Liverpool not to add too our tally of hitting the word work when Kuyt headed against the bar from close in.

Suarez wait was to be short one, with Liverpool exploding out of defence with a rapier thrust and Enrigue standing up a perfect ball to the far post for Carroll to head back for his strike partner to head in from close range to leave us with the premise of visiting Wembley for the second time in a season.

Kop-Post Man of Match:  Andy Carroll: Another strong assured performance by  the ‘Big Man’. Leading the line well, bringing colleagues into the game and seemingly physically more of a handful than at anytime this season.

  1. It's nice to finally say that at Anfield this season - we finally for a change got just reward for our endeavours.

Again Carroll showed he is now performing like a player who thinks he desrves to belong on the big stage that the Anfield theatre provides.

It was encouraging that the team as a whole performed well just need Dalglish's son Henderson to start justifying his faith in him!

Pleasinmg result with a Cup final to now look forward to Wembley on Sunday hopefully slight injuries on last Friday and Saturday will not deprive us of two key players in our season Bellamy and Agger.

  2. I thought Dalglish put a good team out, and we seemed to use all our width and angles for getting the ball around the pitch.

We played with short passing, used our wingers, whipped balls across, dipped balls in the centre, lots of goal threats, and did not waste to many chances upfront, so all in good result.

Great first touch goal from Carroll, I seriously think he needs to brush things off things and carry and lead the front line rather then moaning.

You have to laugh at the own goals, disbelief, but the best one was Dunk who lost control¬ over the ball in front of the goal line.

Hopefully starting with 2 Cups this season and upwards.

  3. Henderson had a very poor game and again he was played out of position. Glad to see you warming to Carroll too. I think he has, as Stevie G remarked, performed really well in the last few weeks. I used to also find that the players I was really critical about actually came good too, like Lucas and Kuyt (last season)! Here's to hoping that Downing and Henderson eventually deliver. Thankfully, Downing's "cross" to Carroll didn't get off the ground again. Really good goal by Carroll.

I think Suarez is the son of Dalglish, not Henderson. Not sure why he was insisting that he took the penalty when he seem to have already made an agreement with Kuyt. Hopefully we won't be in a position to do need to rely on penalties on Sunday.

    1. So does that mean you are calling Suarez a SOD?? LOL

    2. No comment......but why was he asked to take the penalty? Can't stuff like that be agreed before the game?

    3. Yep, KD put up seven fingers.... And held them for a good few seconds, so he made his point clear, even, even though we missed, three of our players could not put the ball back in the back of the net!

    4. SOD = Son of Dalglish!!! LOL

It was very unprofessional by Dalglish and the team - If Gerrard isn't on the pitch Dirk has to always take the penalties regardless of the scores.

But lets not look at a negative and focus on the positives - good win and now a chance to win some silverware for the first time since 2006.

  4. I saw the best own goal in a long time chest, knee, what a goal.

Why do these players think they can run up to the ball and stop then shoot, the keeper has a better chance top save the ball, cat what do you think.

    1. He did not actually stop, more of a shuffle! Best way to put a penalty away is pick your sport, head down, power and drive. He not our penalty taker, and being asked on the spot by KKD, nerves must have kicked in!

    2. Merv - that's a very big question for the cat, I look forward to hearing the response.

And yes, it was a great own goal probably from a life long fan.

    3. The retired Cat's response is this:-

Once a player stops and makes a sudden change of his plan in a run up to a penalty - the keeper always has the upper hand as long as he hasn't totally committed to diving one way or the other.

  5. At least Suarez redeemed himself by scoring the 6th goal after he missed pen. I know you guys are beginning to warm up to Andy, how he got the man of the match I do not know? Yes hge took his goal very well, created the chance for Suarez and missed the header, away from that he had a rugby match with the Brighton defender all day long. I can only say he is improving and not there yet!!!!!

    1. Simple advice from the penalty king Matt Le Tissier - who scored 49 out of 50 pens in his career is to always stay postive.

  6. Edet, you can't argue that the roots to recovery are growing for the player - he should be judged on when he can play alongside Suarez 9 goals in 10 games when they have started together. Also when Gerrard, Suarez and Carroll start for us which happened yesterday and produced two goals for the trio.

His stats are looking better than Torres LOL!!!

    1. I may be wrong, I have not seen a player deep so badly in form for that long as Torres. I think he needs to return to A.Malrid for rejuvenating. I did ask you all to break the curses you heap on his head when he was running his mouth of big a Club Chelsea is.

Did anyone see Barc v.Velentia match last night? That was some game!!!!!! Messi to say was outstanding is an understatement and despite Velentia's goal-keeper pulling strings of saves at points plant that did not stop Barc thrashing them 5:1

    1. I was reading on F365 today that Chelsea are looking at none other than on Rafael Benitez to step in if AVB walks the plank.

    2. Rafa's also been linked with the Wolves job on a short-term basis.

    1. Agree completely with the line up Barry. They all will get the medal at the end of the day. Henderson should not please go near the starting line up. It wouldn't though surprise me if KD picks him seeing he is his blue eye boy.

    2. Agreed Edet,

I can see Kenny going 4-5-1 and dropping Bellers or Downing so that he can stick Hendo in the middle behind Big Andy something like this:

      Reina

      Johnson Skrtl Agger Enrique

      Downing Gerrard Hendo Adam Suarez

      Carroll

Or we could see Hendo working his magic out on the right as a winger. I’m not slagging the lad but I can’t see why Kenny picks him so much.

      Delete
    3. Hendo will come good eventually when he gets a regular run in his best position.

    4. Fine David I take the point, but he should not start on Sunday. He was the weakest link in the last Sunday FA cup.

  9. Baz I like your line up, we should learn to go all out anf finish teams in the first half and keep the tempo in the second.

  10. Seems sensible. Although, never comfortable with Adam in a two, as he's slow as a cart horse back there. Wouldn't surprise me if Kenny chooses Kuyt over Downing.

  11. Wembley is a very sapping pitcgh and you will need runners - so Dirk and Hendo have major roles to play - mark my words.

    1. I would rather have my "Duracell" DK beingh on the faces of Cardiff players for the whole 90 mins, than they Hendo running aimlessly around the field not reading the game.

  12. At the end of the day if the ball deflects of Carroll's ponytail and we win 1-0 that's all I care about!

    1. I don’t think Downing warrants a place in the side above Bellamy, especially as I was there. Bellamy was on fire in the semi final, so I wouldn’t expect him to be content with a place on the bench. If Downing is selected, it should be to try and get crosses in from the left hand side.

Happy with something along the lines of the usual back five, Gerrard and Spearing with Carroll, Bellamy, Suarez.

  14. Have you seen the piece on Craig Bellamy's in which he says he doesn't care about medals and he won't loose any sleep win or loose. Too me it suggests that he just loves football and also we are playing his home town club and Liverpool are the team he supported as a boy.

    1. I don't agree with him - all he has at the end of of his long career is a Scottish winners medal - nope he needs to win a couple more winning medals before he retires.
