That Liverpool missed enough chances to have won a number of games conclusively was disappointing. That Luis Suarez missed enough chances to pull himself well clear as the Premiership's top scorer was disappointing.
Not for the first time this season the Liverpool team that came out in the second-half at Anfield was unrecognisable from that of the first half and not for the first time this season the substitutions called into question the tactical decisions made from the side-line.
The dichotomy within Liverpool's performance was that the first twenty minutes was as good as anything seen at home and away in the last two seasons. The free-flowing football was superb with Gerrard playing within himself controlling the tempo of the game with Able Lieutenant Adam interchanging nicely with Liverpool were exerting pressure at will. But as we've found out time and time again football has a habit of kicking you in the teeth if chances are not taken from a position of dominance.
Bellamy's inclusion added to the number of match winners in Suarez, Gerrard, Adam, Downing and Kuyt which made all the more disappointed that we couldn't find a way to kill off a Norwich who deserved nothing more than a train ticket home. Suarez time and time again showed he is a class above, but these are the games, especially at home that we need win and the sub-standard nature of our finishing was made all the more galling, given how many of the chances were glaring opportunities inside the penalty area.
Having shown encouraging signs in his cameo from centre-midfield last week, it was disappointing to see Henderson come on to play on the right when it was patently apparent that Adam was flagging from the hour. Bellamy's substitution didn't seem to make any sense when he was offering quality in the final third and was tracking back when needed in addition to scoring the goal from his only decent opportunity.
Pepe was patently at fault for the goal, but two or free times Norwich got headers in beating Carragher and Skrtel comfortably in the air and twice early on in the second half Glen Johnson's personal satnav seem to go on the blink as he was palpably out of position.
All that being said, Gerrard and Adam were positives playing together, although Gerrard still looks someway short of match fitness. Pieces of skill from Suarez will live long in the memory, but players like Downing must stamp their own personality on the game and not be overawed by Suarez personality.
Downing on occasions will try to thread impossible balls through to Suarez instead of taking on the shot even when if he is better positioned. Recently, he has been unfairly chastised for not providing no assists this season, but as with yesterday is it his fault if those on the end of his crosses fail to hit the target?
Conclusion: The game should have been dead and buried after twenty minutes, but not for the first time this season we tailed off after a good start whether it's because of lack of concentration or disappointment or both, but it has to be stamped out. We closed positively with chances which on another day would have seen us home and hosed. It brings into question whether we are missing a clinical striker we can bring off the bench.
Instead of sitting quite comfortably among the elite we have thrown away an opportunity knowing that the race for fourth place will be as competitive as it has ever been we need to be winning matches we are expected to.
Man of The Match: Luis Suarez should have had a hat-trick and looked up occasionally to find better place teammates in the area, but that's all part of his make-up. Once again his all-round performance leading the line was at times sensational.
This is slowly becoming a regular theme on our blog - talking about missed opportunities.
ReplyDeleteWe are missing chances which at the end of this season we will look back on and say that cost us dear.
Its all good and well moaning about the game which should have been dead and buried in the first twenty minutes but the reality is again the lack of clinical finishing which is why we are not a lot higher in the table right now.
Suarez has by far been our best player this season and is world class but my one gripe about him is that every game he misses at least one easy chance.
Against Norwich he had 11 shots 6 on target - with those stats I expect at least 2 goals and for the improvement in his game is something he has to work on.
The rest of the team has to show more clinical winning determination as well because we have not got the distraction of European football.
So at the weekends we need to give our all for the cause win our league games and get back into that top 4!!!
Who wants to start lol
ReplyDeleteThink everyone is just pissed off with the same story of missing chances every game.

Pure Frustration!
ReplyDeleteAre we now battling for 4th Place?
RedAlert
We are not in the top 4 teams in that league at the moment, I never expected to get 4th anyway, we'll see. Arsenal are now finding their form and Spurs are stronger. As for Man City yesterday, that was the best team performance I've seen for many years....pure class.
ReplyDeleteThe worrying pattern of being ridiculously wasteful in front of goal is definitely a concern with norwich being added to the list of sunderland, stoke and united of games where we dropped points as a result of failing to take our chances, with the brighton game also featuring the same pattern.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that I'm still confident we'll finish in the top four and although it was a very disappointing result on saturday I think there were a lot of positives from the performance, primarily the creativity we showed. Think suarez is always going to miss some chances but don't think he'll ever have a day like saturday again where he literally could of had six. Was really encouraged by bellamy's performance and though he seems to be the new boo boys target thought downing offered good width on the right and should of had two assists with two crosses that laid it on a plate for Suarez and bellamy, although his shooting was poor and he looks like he needs a goal to give him a bit of confidence.....
All in all it was a really frustrating match to watch as the longer we kept spurning chances the more inevitable a norwich equaliser seemed but I still think we've made massive progress since the new owners came in and are definitely moving in the right direction...

Like the positivity in Luke’s email – Nice one Luke.

I think at half time on Saturday we should have swapped Downing to play on the left (his natural side) and Bellamy should have been allowed to play on the right – I strongly believe that would have been very productive.
ReplyDeletePlaying Downing on the right narrows our game because he drifts inwards – he will very rarely take the ball to the by-line from the right and opposition defenders are now working him out.
Looking forward to seeing how Downing gets on live this Saturday at the Hawthorns when we travel to WBA – revenge is in order for them as Vic, Karl and I went and had to endure the mocking chants of the “Boing Boing Baggies brigade when they beat us 2-1 last season.
Last season we lost because of a lack of width – that has been addressed in the summer so I am looking for a good 3-1 or 3-0 win.

Downing delivered two glorious crosses on the run with his right foot to no avail. From my recollection there was quality ball after quality ball played into the box, but we squandered chances galore.
ReplyDeleteWhen Kenny took off Bellamy I was think 'what the...' and when Henderson came on and was sent to the right hand side I was stunned. But after missing 29 chances we can make as many excuses as we like, but we just didn't take our opportunities and the end of the day if we play with Bellamy and Downing at home then I can't see any reason why, especially at home, Carroll isn't start. After the profligacy of our strike force over the last few games I fully expect him to start the next two games against Stoke and WBA.
The positive is that we are creating chances, but we can't go on like Arsenal playing great football and losing or drawing matches because we can't take our chances - we just need to believe that there will be occasions when we play worse and win. We were always going to create chances with that formation and I like the way Gerrard's short passing kept the game flowing and a couple of his crosses, especially the one whipped one at the end to Carroll was pure class.
Not enamoured with our defensive qualities - I think Enrique is the only real quality defensive player of the four on show Saturday. Don't want to see Carragher living of past glories.
Totally agree with you on the defence. Certain players like Carra are living off past glories he is no longer good enough to play as a certain starter he should be slowly being eased out. Coates has been bought for the future but him and Agger should be slowly taking over as the first choice defence. Enrique has been outstanding for us so far and has for me been our best purchase of the summer- even though he should have cut out the cross for the Norwich goal.
ReplyDeleteI have lost all faith in Johnson as a defender and unless Kelly was injured do not see why Johnson was picked ahead of him.
“after missing 29 chances we can make as many excuses as we like, but we just didn't take our opportunities” this sentence sums it all up – no excuses full stop.

Maybe Suarez will be dropped for the next game... ;)
ReplyDeleteWas reading Stevie's comments yesterday... we should aim for the Champions League at the end 2011/12!
ReplyDeleteRedAlert
The key word is consistency – if we can try and aim for an average of 2 pts per game we should get top 4.

The WBA game is a key point in the season. Win and it steps up our momentum, but draw or loose and a gap already begins to appear between not just the Man City's of this world, but Spurs and Newcastle and ramps up the pressure - which is obviously not want we need this early in the season. Given it's an away game I assume Lucas will be back got Craig Bellamy which will disappointing if it happens, because as with Carroll after the Everton game no striker likes to be substituted after scoring and his confidence is obviously.
ReplyDeleteI understand want the manager is saying regarding Bellamy understanding the situation, hinting that others are ahead of him in the pecking order and managing him is important given his age, 'Craig is a really good professional. He’s not too bad when he has got the ball, either.
‘He is more mature and better educated now.’ Dalglish added: ‘You have to be fair to everyone but Craig’s happy to play his part. ‘He would certainly be much happier if he was playing more but he understands the situation maybe more than when he was younger.
‘He knows everyone respects him here and that is a big thing for him. We give everyone the respect they deserve'.
While he does have to be managed because of his past injury history, the fact is the only Liverpool players that can hold a candle to him for pure class are Gerrard and Suarez and if some of those clear-cut chances had dropped to him, as he showed in dispatching the one which came his way in the first half, in all probability we'd be talking from a position of total confidence rather than looking at the WBA game from the disappointment of not winning our last two games.
As stated in the blog, we are creating chances and if we continue to do so and start taking chances we'll deliver a decisive victory some where along the line, although I would be just as happed with a scruffy 1-0 victory if it means gaining 3 points.
But on the other hand, over the last decade with sat through some pretty turgid performances and it's actually nice to pay money and watch Liverpool playing some of the brightest football in the Premiership. We need to develop a ruthless streak to finish off games while we are in a position of dominance, hopefully starting with Stoke and WBA.
It all starts now. We must pick the pockets of Stoke rugby club tonight and I hope Carroll plays, perhaps along with Bellamy. It might be too much for Coates. Make no mistake, this is not a game for playing the young uns. If we win its the 1/4 finals.
ReplyDeleteSuarez is Liverpool’s attack now. Just every attack worth mentioning goes through him now. This is all good stuff but we need to address Carroll to start producing, KD must have a word by January.
ReplyDeleteMain thing is we are creating massive chances in every game, what would be worse is if we had average players sitting behind the ball, doing sod all. We got massive talent on the pitch, but the thing is teams are noe getting better and stronger, and lower teams are not afraid of the big teams.
We have to realise we have brought players in to rebuild our team, to get it back on the basics of levels to compete against teams. It is not as if we had a class team and it only needed bit of Mr Sheen! It needed a whole Wax over.
We have to cut out the individual errors at the back, seems like our back line are taking it in turns at the minute. Our main reason goals against has been for sloppy sleepy defenders rather then stunning goals past are No 1.
Does the current squad have the quality to be in the top four or does our play and chances lack to secure our Goal for this season.
