Bellamy and Gerrard Help Suarez Extinguish The Everton Flame

A controversial decision by referee Martin Atkinson virtually killed the game as a contest, which up to that point had been too close to call. Harsh or not it helped and that's all that matters in a Derby match.

Suarez, undoubtedly the best player on the pitch, could and should have put Liverpool ahead after some glorious work from our very own 'Duracell Bunny' Kuyt controlling a mis-kick from Jagielka to produce a glorious lobbed cross to the ubiquitous Uruguayan, who from close range inexplicably headed straight into the arms Tim Johnson.Liverpool's failure to capitalise was not for the want of trying with Suarez intelligently turning Jagielka on the corner of the area coercing him into an impulsive tackle with Kuyt's resultant penalty saved. Charlie Adam, not having one of his most stellar games, unleashed a spectacular drive against the bar as the half came to a close.

Rodwell's sending off instead of giving Liverpool total dominance, the game became more stretched and brought Everton gaining more of a foothold. Lucas and Adam failed to influence the game from the middle and the question needs to be asked whether this pairing can develop into a formidable pairing in the future. Adam, I believe, is better suited to a role free of the defensive responsibility which so restricts his game at Liverpool compared to Blackpool. Some have suggested Adam needs to build-up his stamina levels, but playing him in a two in the centre highlights his lack of speed of the mark as he not the type of player who will surge past an opponent. Can we afford to give him a free role with two strikers and winger on the pitch? That is the question.

The answer to the question is for another time, as the removal of Adam and the ineffective Downing, led to game changing substitutes. Gerrard added an assemblance of control in the middle with short prompting passing, but it was the inclusion of Bellamy with his pace and incisive driving runs which led to our first goal, when he released the ever impressive Enrique overlapping down the left to cut back for Andy Carroll to dispatch impressively.

Carroll has been hammered unmercilessly, but as we have always stated on this blog he made his name scoring goals from great delivery in the right areas and we should judge him after he starts regularly and he has quality service. Yesterday he has could quite easily have scored a hat-trick and after a decent display Wolves he deserves some encouragement rather than the continuing knocks, after all his Liverpool career up to know has been stop start. The killer goal was all about the tenacity of Suarez and was well deserved for his selfless running and drive off the ball and his imposing play on it.

Going into the Man Utd game on the back of a win against Everton will help confidence. With Gerrard putting another twenty-five or so minutes into his legs there must be more than an even chance of him starting. Everyone knows Craig Bellamy's qualities which I mentioned in the Brighton blog and I believe any team starting with Gerrard, Bellamy, Suarez, Downing and an increasingly confident Andy Carroll will cause consternation in any opposition.

Let's hope that Fabio Capello see's sense and leaves Gerrard out of the next England squad.

Man of Match: Luis Suarez in danger of carrying the Liverpool team.

  1. Referees decision may have been wrong for the sending off but he had a handful of worse tackles to control, but less unpunished.

Again, we created many chances and could have scored few more. Bellamy certainly had an impact with his pace and driving forward runs, a well-taken goal by Carroll but man does he need to work harder then that performance.

At all cost a result we desperately needed!

  2. Am glad Dirk started the match, I think Henderson still need some time to fit in and you
are right about Charlie Adams he was more effective when he had a free
roaming rola at Blackpool, something which he probably cannot do here.
Am surprised though that Henderson is being picked above Spearing who
I think is combative and quite good going forward. While he is more
defensive minded I think he and Lucas do pretty well together. Enrique
is amazing though and I hope Coates can find his feet in these murky
    waters called the EPL.

  3. The boss has to get the team firing on all cylinders. I look forward to the return of gerrard for sure. But we are going to need a bold mgr to get us firing. Bellamy and Gerrards drive is urgently needed and what really pleased me was the subs made. Doesnt matter what ur name is, maybe with the exception of Carra, if u r not performinh, your coming. For me, carrol needs to start the next Few games and develop the potential partnership with Suarez. If looks could kill, Caroll would be dead!

  4. The win is dedicated to Edet now having the upper hand on his son !!!

The referee influenced the game but we have had our fair share of dodgy decisions so it was nice to benefit for a change.

We need to show more creativity throughout a game but even more so- when we are playing against ten men because until Gerrard and Bellamy came on Everton looked comfortable and we looked like all our ideas had ran out – Lucas may be a limited player going forward but he is currently in the side on merit doing the tidying up duties – intercepting etc.,

Charlie Adam’s place is gonna be under threat to me as Stevie G has to come straight back in the team as the centrepiece dictating our play and driving the team forward with his swashbuckling runs.

We also as stated previously need to find a space for the ultra-talented Craig Bellamy – he is just too good to leave on the bench every game.

Suarez again will be the key to destroying Man Utd at Anfield on Oct 15th – he did it last season – I totally believe he will do it again !!!

  5. Thanks David and everyone. Good to see Andy scored. My son went on and on about the sending off as if Liverpool never suffered from referee rough justice. However, for his sanity I told him the sending off was very hashed as if I care. Now, my joy will know no bounds if we are the first to inflict the first defeat of the season Man U.

  6. Kinda of know how you feel Edet, my younger brother is a life long Everton supporter!

It's hard to show creativity if you don't have enough players in the side capable of doing so. Really miss a centre-half capable of playing football. Downing had probably his worse game of the season and as such there was nothing coming from the midfield and the lack pace was there for all to see. I've said, this before, but I don't think Adam can play in a two, his game is not about running and making tackles and interceptions, it's about creating chances and scoring goals, probably a free role. You can probably count the times he has been near the opposing area on two hands in all our league games. Where Lucas is concerned, I don't believe that because you're a defensive midfielder it restricts you to sitting in the middle of the park just winning the ball and playing square passes especially against ten men. No reason why he cant pick the ball up and drive forward with it to link up with his forward line.

Bellamy's pace pushes defences back and made room for Enrique to create the killer overlap - have to say thought Enrique, as he has been previously was solid and good coming forward. Kelly made a couple of clean tackles in and near the area when it would have been easy to miss-time. Also, Carroll had three chances in the areas where you want him to be. He dispatched one and had two close headers. It's all about service and he hasn't been too bad in his last two games - if he gets the service and he's doesn't deliver after a succession of games then we should start being very critical.

The centre-back pairing stood off and watched Saha spank two shots past the post and I agree with Karl that we are missing Agger. He offers something different. Carragher a couple of blinding defence headers, but he now sits on the edge of area weary of any pace coming his way. Also, agree with Karl, was surprised that Kenny brought on Henderson ahead of Spearing in a Merseyside Derby, thought Dalglish missed a great opportunity. Guess there is no room for sentiment in football...
