We Are Liverpool

It would be all to easy as a Liverpool fan to write about how sweet it is to rub Fernando Torres’ nose in it, but that would take away from a wonderful well drilled performance, which wasn’t all about defence, but was a lesson in teamwork and support all over the pitch. From front to back we worked like Trojans to nullify  Chelsea's attacking threat and probably end any pretensions they had of winning the title.

Surprisingly, Chelsea chose to break up a team which had scored four in the last game away to Everton and bring in Torres, probably hoping to score psychological points with the former Liverpool striker coming back to haunt his former employees.  Dalglish chose to refrain from the obvious temptation to play Suarez following his debut goal, recognising the Uruguayan would not be at optimum levels following his recent seven match ban.

The early skirmishes was a case of cat and mouse, with Liverpool working hard to contain the Chelsea three-pronged attack of Drogba, Torres and Anelka in behind.  Torres had an early chance, when Maxi’s misplaced pass went straight to him, who bearing down on the Liverpool drove his shot over the bar. Moments later, Liverpool breaking out, as has been the trademark of King Kenny’s second coming, with midfielders in support of strikers, Kuyt latched on to Kelly’s down the right-wing with Meireles streaking clear down the middle.  Kuyt’s low cross failed to get past the first defender,  but it was a sign of things to come.

On the half-hour, Torres as had been his wont in red shirt, dove-tailed beautifully with Droba, gliding in between the centre-half’s, his shot was blocked by a last ditched tackle from Carragher, no change there for the General in defence.  Two minutes later Liverpool made inroads down the Chelsea left which they continued to do all-game, with Gerrard and Johnson.  Johnson’s blocked cross found its way to the irrepressible Gerrard whose measured left foot stealth-like cross found Maxi at the back post. He some how managed to hit the bar when it seemed easier to score.

Liverpool’s control over the game was such that Drogba and Torres cut forlorn figures upfront and Lampard was unable to shake free of the Liverpool midfield with Liverpool’s wing-backs helping Gerrard, Meireles and Lucas to press and reduce time and space in crucial areas.

The much maligned Lucas Leiva produced his best performance in a Liverpool shirt (which is not the first time this has been said this season) stealing in to make umpteen vitals inceptions and either playing some delightful short passes to set up attacks or driving runs up to halfway.  Martin Kelly reduced Ashley Cole, commonly considered  to be the best attacking left-back in the game, to a defensive role as he handled him with the control of a veteran. He continues to grow with every game.  Dirk Kuyt has his detractors, but he is a players player.  Playing upfront on his own, he battled royally with the Chelsea centre-half’s and refused to let Obi-Mikel settle, diligently applying pressure from the first minute to the last.

The three centre-half’s at the back were assured.  Agger giving the Liverpool backline a footballing defender comfortable on the ball and Carragher providing the missing leadership we’ve been craving and with having three centre-half’s and the wing-backs covering, his lack of pace is of less importance.  Gerrard was everywhere and it was he who provided the killer pass from the inside-right channel which caused havoc in the Chelsea defence, with Cech failing to cut the ball out and the marauding Meireles making a difficult chance seem ridiculously easy when he volleyed a high bouncing ball into the net.  He has become an intrinsic part of the Liverpool team, taking it turns with Gerrard to support the striker and getting back to provide defensive cover.  He shoots with either and Liverpool fans can look forward to an even better player next season.

This victory was one which was totally deserved.  Chelsea had the majority of possession, but were restricted to long range punts from Anelka and Essien and it was Liverpool who almost made it two when Aurelio twenty minutes from time cut into from the left after Kuyt had sent him free, his powerful shot was parried away by Cech. Liverpool quite comfortably held on for the win, with Reina having to make only one important save in the match.

The team is playing with the confidence that only winning can give a side and long may that continue.  As for Fernando, taken off after 65 minutes, as is the Liverpool way we wish him well, and for us we’ll concentrate on the future and not get ahead of ourselves as  King Kenny said after the match, “ we only take one game as it comes”.  Quite simply King Kenny stating what was and is the Liverpool way.

  1. I love the full commitment the Liverpool players are showing to haul us out of the dismal position we found ourselves under Roy. The same players seem to have found a second gear, the defence has kept its fourth straight clean sheet which helps build confidence from the days when we used to give up late goals. We are more assured of our game with everyone playing to support the other.
I agree with KK, we should take one game at a time and not get ahead of ourselves, Chelsea is the first of the big teams we have played and there are still many more battles ahead.
Having said that we must enjoy this win coming so soon after all the disappointment of losing Torres, but like KK said, we will play whoever they put in front of us with the aim of winning the game.

  2. A highly professional team performance today by us completely showed the character and determination which has been so far missing in all away games under previous manager Hodgson from the same group of players. I would like to give special personal mention to two players who are unsung heroes for LFC they are players that are greatly maligned but they have to do the dirty work for the more talented players to shine - Dirk Kuyt - who battled up front as a lone striker holding up the ball until supported by midfielders and closing down when required and Lucas Leiva - whose constant interceptions and breaking up of plays helped to start many of our counter attacks. Well done to both players !!! Just one month ago at the start of Jan 2011 the questions aimed at the then LFC manager Roy Hodgson were relating to relegation today one month later at the start of Feb 2011 the relegation talk has now turned to potential Champions League spots. King Kenny has shown yet again what a massively impressive job he has done working with a bunch of lads going no-where but to mid-table obscurity to a team with very solid aspirations for CL or Euro League football. Mr John W Henry where is Kenny's contract please ?? He has now earned the right not to wait until the end of the season !!! The depression of the previous manager's regime has now been lifted and King Kenny has made us all proud of our team again !!!

  3. An excellent performance from our boys, Kelly, Johnson, Kuyt, Meireles, Gerrard etc. all played there part. We showed character, fighting pedigree, quick short passing, Chelsea could not handle us.

Best thing of all was that we played the whole game without our new strikers, to me that just showed we have now more wining options and beating top clubs, without playing our full force.

Our Character and win clearly showed we don’t need Torres and I think we had to send a message out to him!

Apart from Maxi miss, (open goal), a superb performance

Kenny has transformed the team into something special.

  4. What a glorious weekend of futbol! Love the way our players went about their business and didn't coddle or play nice with that striker who shall remain nameless (Agger is a legend!) It seems these LFC v CFC matches always come down to 'whoever wins the midfield' and boy did we win that battle! Lucas was immense and every time chelski seemed to have a break or string a couple of passes together, he was there to either breakup play or intercept the ball..my MOTM hands down.

If I have to thank Woy for anything itll be the signing of the Porto punisher. The boy just cant stop scoring! If Kelly maintains his form I could see him making his national team debut before yrs end. Now if we can just stay fit and Carroll can make it back before March then I believe anything is possible (apart from the league title of course)

Finally, back to the Liverpool way.

  5. great report vic, agree with everything especially the noticeable difference of midfielders being alowed the freedom to support the attacks. Think that is the biggest difference from the turgid hodgson regime...

Thought lucas was absolutely immense and is finally showing the talent he obviously has on a regular basis. He doesnt make the spectacular sliding tackles mascherano did but he always seems to be in the right place, ala did hamman, never stops running and uses the ball much more progressively than mascherano, 89 percent completion yesterday and made almost half of teams successful tackles!.

Agree that kuyt was also fantastic and think he should defo be carrolls deputy leading the line. Also, agree that kelly continues to be a revelation while think johnson also deserves much credit for the way he has slotted in at left back. Also, great to see gerrard so motivated, as pic at final whistle shows, and I-m pretty excited about carroll feeding of his deliverys when you consider the amount of assist joey barton got from bog standard floated free kicks!

Finally, I have to admit I was sceptical about kenny for more than a short term appointment but after about his second press conference I was starting to think he was the right fit and he just keeps getting better! So good to be able to be united behind a true legend.....
Exciting times ahead with carroll and suarez to be added to the mix. I also think that this new system could see us get more out of joe cole....

p.s so sweet to see torres toil relatively unproductively before being subbed. really think we-re a better team without him as hed been injured and uninterested for 18 months...

  6. Essentially players seemed to be enjoying it again and as such are putting in the hard graft which going goes in tandem with going back to the traditions of pass and move. A part from Glen Johnson, players are playing in either their correct positions or like Johnson at the moment, being asked to get forward and fulfil a role which accentuates his attacking prowess. Although we can't go overboard with individual displays, it's interesting to see Lucas producing a stunning display as he did at Chelsea (I for one have been a stern critic and believe the jury is still out) and one wonders if it's he being given the responsibility to anchor the midfield, with Gerrard and Meireles bombing on, with the freedom to move forward, hence the increased confidence. He stood tall up against Essien and Lampard.

It's also infectious as Martin Kelly is showing a decisive lack of fear. This can only be good for the club as many of our youngsters will believe that they are not faraway from a first team squad place having only recently played alongside him in the reserves. We may not have the depth of squad as many other clubs, but the right attitude goes along way.
