Sitting at home on a day’s annual leave I glanced at my watch showing seven minutes to 10… “damn, I thought I’d almost missed Jurgen Klopp’s first live press conference as Liverpool Manager.
As he sauntered into the press conference alongside the seemingly diminutive Ian Ayre one was struck by his stature. He sat down, flashed a film star smile and after the assorted media were lectured on the house rules it began.
Watching and listening I was electrified by his tone, passion and fervent belief in himself. What gives this particular Liverpool manager resonance is he’s coming in off the back of a successful last posting.
Yes, he’s funny. Yes, he clever. Yes, he’s charismatic, but none of that wouldn’t carry as much weight if the man from the Black Forest hadn’t won two Bundesliga titles.
When he says , he’ll have “the first and the last word” on transfers, you don’t doubt he’d accept anything less.
And why would he? Remember this this is the manager who bought Mats Hummels for €4 million, Robert Lewandowski for €4.5 million, Marco Reus for €17.1 million and Shinji Kagawa for a paltry €350,000.
He has a reputation for bringing on young players coming through the ranks. He picked Mario Gotze as 17 year old in the 2009-10 season and by the following season the brilliant attacking midfielder had became an important member of the Dortmund side which went on to win the first of two consecutive Bundesliga’s titles under Klopp.
He said all the right things, “It’s the biggest honour to be at one of the biggest clubs in this world and the opportunity to try and help the situation. It’s not the perfect moment but it’s a good moment to come. I feel really proud. I’m looking forward to the intensity of football and how the people live football in Liverpool. It’s a special club. I had two special clubs and this role is the perfect next step for me to try to help.
If that doesn’t endear Liverpool faithful nothing will.
He understands that task at hand and not walking into it lightly saying, ‘Twenty-five years is a long [without winning the league]. All the people have tried to get better and take the title. History is the base for us us. It’s not allowed to take the history in the backpack. You have to come to our race. I want to see the first step next week, but not always compare with other times.’
Alluding to Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley, he said ‘I don’t compare myself with these geniuses within the history of Liverpool. It’s cool that you are looking forward to the work for the next few months and years.
‘None of theses managers said they wanted to be a legend when they arrived. This is a great club because of many good decisions in the past.
It really sounds as if this is a man at ease with the world and comfortable in his own skin in the full glare of the public, so may he just is the normal one.
Ex-Liverpool player said on twitter ‘Big welcome to Jurgen Klopp. I’d run through a shootout in a war for this guy.’ If an ex-player feels the fires burning let’s hope it’s stoked the current squad to new found belief and levels.
Klopp is a realist. He went on to say, “Expectations can be really big problem. It’s like a backpack 20 kilos more! I’m not here to promise that against Tottenham you will see the new LFC, but maybe some of it. Everything in life takes time, the only thing nobody gives time is development.
As yesterday was Klopp day I decided to take a step back and just enjoy our new manager in his new surroundings - he was very calm, handled the media like a conductor playing his orchestra and can now get to what he does best and dealing with his players - very impressed with him on his first days - three words sum him up so far for ne, infectious inspirational leader.

DeleteYes David.
DeleteWould love to be a fly on the wall at the first couple of training sessions when all the players are available.
ReplyDeleteWow David, I woke up with the same thoughts, can you imagine the atmosphere.
DeleteThere is already a Klopp cap on the Liverpool store, so David we are getting a Klopp look.
I just wish that is today we are playing spuds. Really can't wait a week for JK 1st game in charge.
DeleteJust gotta endure a few more days of tedious internationals then the PL is back!
DeleteDavid agreed.
