Palace deliver knock-out Puncheon to Gerrard’s send-off

It was the day the club and its fans said goodbye for now to its favourite son.  Gerrard with his family in attendance inside the cauldron of an Anfield stadium filled to the brim with emotion was given a guard of honour by both teams.
While it was a day we knew would come it was still painful to watch Stevie G's final game on the hallowed turf knowing that those boots which so often scorched the Anfield turf are for pastures new.  The match may have been secondary, but make no mistake Palace were well worth their win and were unlucky not to have won more decisively.
We wished and waited for just one more magical Gerrard intervention, but even with Lallana breaking the deadlock early on it was not to be.

Gerrard and kids before the start
Alan Pardew like so many managers before him this season, denied Steven Gerrard the time and space to operate from his deep lying position.  Puncheon was mighty, controlling Palace’s tempo and driving the team forward doing a passable imitation of a younger Gerrard at play.
Bolasie gave Raheem Sterling a lesson on how a winger should play the striking role.  He mesmerised Moreno and ruined Lovren’s afternoon.  The centre-back is beginning to look as if the weight of his £20 million fee and the expectation is too much for him.  His performance vied with any of the dire performances the ex-Southampton player has delivered this season.  He was mauled and often left for dead by the Palace speedster and Moreno and for that matter Can did not escape the roasting handed out by the brilliant Congolese International.

Gerrard's celebrates Lallana's goal
The defensive display and the lack of protection from the midfield was ineptitude gone bad.  Daniel Sturridge or no Daniel Sturridge the need for a top class striker is for the here and now.  Try as he might Sterling is not going to quench the thirst of Brendan Rodgers strikers goal drought.
Sterling was poor and has been ever since his ill-advised use of the media to engineer either a bigger contract or a move.  Jordan Ibe was unlucky to be removed as it could have been any number of Liverpool players including Sterling.
The victory we so craved to send Steven Gerrard on his way to LA Galaxy was not forthcoming, but it failed to stop the celebrations from all including the wonderful Palace fans as Gerrard returned to the ground after the final whistle to say goodbye with his daughters Lourdes, Lexie and Lily-Ella and the Liverpool squad (with Gerrard shirts on)  for an emotional speech.
There were banners a plenty; “Thank you Liverpool’s Gr8est Y.N.W.A., “Steven Gerrard One of a Kind”, but a simple banner said it all, “It’s been a pleasure lad”.  The mosaic at the Kop End where he had once stood as fan read “S 8 G”, but moreover it was his words which made us realise the gap he is leaving because he makes us proud as our captain in all aspects.
Gerrard said, 'It felt very strange. I've been dreading this moment and I'm absolutely devastated I won't be playing in front of these supporters again.
'I have to save my last thank you to these supporters who stand out more than any of them'.
'The very first time I ran out in front of The Kop, I'll never forget that. The first time I played for Liverpool was a dream come true. Everything after that was a bonus.
I'd like to thank everyone at the club who's helped me over the last 17 years, from top to bottom. I'd like to thank all the staff who have helped me, and all the ex-players I've played alongside.
But most of all, I'd like to thank the fans. These supporters here stand out more than any. I've played in front of most supporters around the world, but you are the best.'
The hole Steven Gerrard leaves is significant both on and off the field and for me the sadness knows no bounds because he is my favourite player, but it is for Brendan Rodgers and co to step up to the plate and bridge the gap in the next transfer market and next season or else it won’t be only Steven Gerrard leaving.
Gerrard said some kind words in support of Brendan Rodgers remarking that Liverpool were in good hands, but over the past few months he has looked one dimensional and tactically suspect.  The jury is out and the honeymoon period is well and truly over even if he had fan flying a plane over Anfield with a banner saying in “Brendan we trust” in support.
Man of the match:  The Anfield faithful – sent their captain off in style.
Steven Gerrard arrived a boy, left a legend.

    2. What I will say is this. There’ll be a lot of nonsense talked about the occasion and trying to set up Stevie etcetera … but, that would be deriding Palace’s performance. They dominated the game from around the 20th minute onwards. We could not live with Puncheon, who looked different gravy and Bolasie who had Lovren and Moreno on toast and their aversion to tackling Bolasie was so bad I was wondering if his boots were covered in Marmite!

He brought off Ibe, but Sterling was woeful as he has been since his nonsense in the media. Puncheon took the mickey out of our midfield and Bolasie was simply sensational upfront.

At times we were chasing shadows and quite honestly if we’d been beaten 4 or 5 we couldn’t have complained. We were dreadful. In the FA Semi-final Brendan couldn’t stop changing the formation and today he waited until we were two-one down before doing anything.

Why not play Manquillo as a right-back releasing Can into midfield… but, hey, Brendan knows best. He better start getting his act together in the transfer market or else he’ll be joining Jamie’s C and R as a summariser.

THIS TEAM NEEDS A SPINE and fast!

    3. A lovely write up. I left my poem for him in a book at Liverpool One. Saw barely nothing of the lap of honour. Crowded out by Sky photographers, how very frustrating? It hit home to me as I went by the fan zone and saw the giant screen showing him in action. Managed to stave off the tears yesterday ( my friend Karen couldn’t, bless her) shed some today though.

  2. There was an excellent article in yesterday's FT about the lessons that business can learn from elite football managers. A choice quote - "a big talent is usually self motivated. He wants to succeed for himself and his career. However if he senses that the management is second rate, he may decide to go and succeed in another organisation".

Rodgers is a second rate manager. His tactics are second rate. His buys in the transfer market (bar 2 players) have been second rate. And it is evident from the growing list of world class players who refuse to come to Anfield that he isn't perceived to be a top draw manager. He's had nearly 1000 days (3 seasons) to deliver the goods and is still clutching at sweet FA.

Ancelotti and Klopp could potentially be looking for employment this summer. Nothing against Rodgers but results are EVERYTHING in football and he ain't delivering. Absolutely no trophy in 3 years?!?!?!! After spending over £200m!!?!!!???! Getting beat by TIM FF'ING SHERWOOD's ASTON VILLA IN A SEMI FINAL??????? In any other industry he'd be sacked in a flash - £200m is a lot of cash to piss away with ZERO return.

I can't see no way forward for this mediocre manager and the sooner Rodgers is out of the club the better.

He's making us into a laughing stock. Enough is enough.

    5. Ehm!! Unfortunately there are very few outstanding Managers in the same league as Jose of this world. I heard some pundits muting that RM may go back for Jose. If you ask me, I do not think he will ever return there. I am sure your next question is what do we do with BR, I suggest we give him the rope to hang him self by allowing him one more season. It is the Liverpool culture not to rush off the Manager. If by the middle of next season, things do not change drastically, then he will not wait to be told, he’ll certainly take a walk on his own.

In as much as I feel that BR has taken us as far as he can, I do not think Ancelotti, Italian job is my man.

    6. Edet, while I'd like to agree with you I just hope the owners are not in the same mind to play fast and lose with Liverpool's future. If we are languishing someway off the top four by the end of October we have to get shot as it's obvious he'll be there at the start of next season.

If he is to stay there are no longer any excuses because Gerrard's gone. We need extensive transfer activity to clear the malaise and Brendan to find some new found panache from the sidelines.

Btw, Ancelotti brings with him a credible CV and so does Klopp.

      Delete
    7. Not sure we are going to get either of these two guys.

    8. Edet,

I would prefer Klopp for the job, his charisma and man management style fits well with the Liverpool way, but saying that Ancellotti would be a draw magnet for the x factor players, we are missing at the moment.

Imagine if Ancellotti were the Boss, do you think Suarez would leave and Depay would opt for that team.

      Just saying

      Delete
    9. Give him end of October and either he will throw in the white hanky, which is unlikely or show him the rope, I like fellow nice bloke and all that, but RESULTS matter in football. For me I don't see him turning anything apart from the door handle exit!

  3. Well the time has finally come for Sterling to finally reveal his true colours. He has decided to leave the club mainly because he hasn't got a backbone to me. He should have been able to tell his agent to get him an improved contract and then if after that contract we have not made the required improvements he could try and negotiate a move.

But to now confirm he would like to leave us shows he is a petulant kid that hasn't grown up and is taking his ball away as soon as he has not got his own way.

He has stated that he has felt bullied into signing a new contract when in fact he has been allowed to continue playing week in week out (remembering he is still two years left of his contract)as one of our main sources of attack when in fact his heart has been swayed and he is no longer fighting for our cause.

He has stated he wants to play Champions League football next season but look at his performances in the Champions league for us during our poor campaign where he played in all six games including as a sub in the notorious game away to Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, but the stats that matter to me is that within those six games for us he did not score one goal which is simply a sign that he is not yet ready for that level of football yet.

If he wanted to prove himself he had the stage during the season in the Champions League but he flopped.

He had a chance in the league to show he could step up with the void of losing Suarez and Sturridge through injury he started the season ok but once the Champions League started his form dipped and he ultimately has not been the player that performs in the big games to get us wins to win the big games. he scored in the first leg of the Capital One semi final vs Chelsea but was not a feature in the second leg or in the FA cup semi final vs Aston Villa.

We will miss his blistering pace on the counter attack and as Karl has stated he may go on to be world class but his attitude stinks and we as a club do not want players who do not fight for the LFC cause 100%.

Hopefully we can sell him abroad but something tells me he will end up at Arsenal or Chelsea as he is supposedly looking for a property in London, with him also being a former QPR apprentice I would not be surprised if he ended up in a blue shirt.

I would now make a concerted effort to replace Sterling's pace with the pace and finishing potential of Theo Walcott, he looks ready to be trusted as a player that can get 20-25 goals with the right service and support.

Some fans are concerned about his injury record but I believe Theo will be a great asset given a chance.

So lets say adios to Sterling and welcome Walcott.

Our manager's hard work in helping Sterling by even giving him a mid season break in the Caribbean has backfired - Sterling has shown himself to be an ungrateful spoilt kid who our manager tried to help develop and must feel like he has had a kick in the teeth.

Your thoughts would be very much appreciated on this topic.

    2. Sterling moving on... a shame but Ibe is a better talent in my view. Walcott would be a good player to get but he won't come to Anfield - at the mo Arsenal are in the ascendancy & they have more world class players (Sanchez, Ozil...) and the club are happy to spend big to attract top draw talent. More evidence in my view to chuck this pointless manager.

    3. I hear he feels he was bullied into signing a new contract… a few seasons ago when Raheem was going through off field stuff the club supported him. Half –way through this season when he reportedly said he was tired the club packed him off to Jamaica to recuperate.

For me Liverpool have two choices. We tell him he’s going nowhere and we put a firm hand on the tiller to set an example to all our players and his agent or we sell him and make sure he is sold abroad – and from what I understand the message inside Anfield is that he will not be sold to any English team (Bayern Munich fits the bill with a couple of brilliant but ageing wingers).

He and his agent are riding rough shod over us. We were flying then he comes out with nonsense and helps derail the season and he hasn’t played well since. I agree with Jamie Carragher and Graham Beecroft, he says he also wants to win things, but when we needed him to show up at Wembley, the result was pitiful.

I was listening to Talksport last night and suddenly a journalist calls into with an exclusive to say Sterling’s off and then within half an hour every top media outlet was running this and they weren’t quoting the journalist they had the story. It’s plainly obvious that he’s agent and he are briefing against the club to destabilise the situation for their own benefit the club and it says plenty about the Liverpool hierarchy and it makes Brendan Rodgers look a mug. He was on TalkSport last week saying what a lovely boy the player was and at the end of the season we’d get round to negotiating his contract and then after the Chelsea game the player tells him he’s off.

It’s time someone got a grip of the situation. And if he’s telling the manager he’s off doesn’t that say he has no confidence in him as well as the club?

    4. Ok, if Rheem wants to go, then go, if he things his better then, what is potential been put on the table.
Is the club in safe hands, not unless money starts to pour in this summer and we end up mid table and Boston bosses may think it’s acceptable for a club like LFC
Glory days or hay days are fading fighting for CL no more, fighting for Crown Jewels no more, but fighting for 5, 6 seems our more desirable, the mood is changing fast around the fans, just look at the blow in 3-1 defeat against Crystal Palace, and now with the Rheem saga.
SG gave us 17 Yeats of more ups, and then downs than any team can give us. But there is still a gap in the cabinet, coming close to fill our ambition last season, which has now moved on to win the la liga.
Our no 8 has now left, and our winning side is probably better without him, but I don’t see the point in keeping hold of a player who come out and said he wants to leave.
I think we do have significant talent in the ranks and on the pitch, and we need to work around our back bone. VIc's dead wood MUST go. What killed us were some heavy defeats later on the season which we just seemed to crumble.
Working around our Skelton sterling, Sturridge, coutinho, Henderson, Lucas, skrtel, Moreno, sakho, we need to dig deep and must spend a quality and prompt striker, a quality centre half, centre mid field and they all must hit the ground running hard.
I'm not the one for one more season etc. etc. it's now we act, cos are neighbours will spend a build high while we still putting the scaffolding up.

    7. And that's why I said we have two choices - first tell him isn't going anywhere and the second sell him abroad (and that's going to be pretty difficult given he's in a position of strength re his contract).

In the cold light of day they should make him stay - needs John W to step in as he did personally with Suarez and send a clear and unequivocal message. We cannot keep selling top players, especially when we are struggling to buy-in world class players. Have to get our heads out the clouds with this "We are Liverpool crap and start living in the real world." Once they've done that then we need to change the transfer dynamic and start spending top dollar on tried and tested rather than on what might be. I don't care if we can't get Gareth Bale or Paul Pogba (actually that's a lie), but at the very least we have to trying to buy top players instead of settling for the next rung on the ladder or just buy bloody good players like Dortmund or Atletico Madrid seem too. I have never understood why we didn't at the least make Arsenal pay top dollar for Sanchez a player we desperately wanted?

Unfortnately, we are in a position of weakness because we are not in contention and as such will always be susceptible to players wanting to walk away so we have to reinforce our methods or be left standing. We are on the edge of a precipice with this manager and it's decision time. Back him one last time or sack him.

In one of the articles which David sent round, it's interesting that it says Milner and Ings would be The Brodge's transfer choices...

      Delete
    8. Vic, our scattershot approach to scouting and recruiting has been haphazard for several years it might have something to do with changing the manager every few years but I feel its an endemic problem the club has created for itself by failing to move with the changing landscape of football.

Occasionally we stumble across a quality young player like Coutinho but the scouting network and transfer committee at the club seem inept at best. £20M for Lovren?!!! In relative terms it almost as ridiculous as the £35M for Carroll. Its beginning to look like a desperate ploy by a club who can no longer attract the top players so overpay for lesser talents to give the fans the impression these are stellar signings.

At present there’s no coherent policy at Liverpool best summed up by Lambert and Mario’s acquisitions last summer, a Plan B we never used and a clown who wanted to be a ringmaster. I don’t hold out much hope that the FSG review will change anything, we’ll still be scrabbling around trying to make signings and offload Mario on the last day of the transfer window.

  6. Good points, Im too nope puttings hope up for the boy to stay, but he has now crossed the line, with fans trust, and Media. etc. That meeting is simply for way out to Exit.... its procedure that he confronts his desire to leave the club to the owners! but I could be wrong!!

David about the article on our transfer policy players tend to move on if they have dome allot for the club and desire to go to another club for new things, new targets etc, but the boy has not achieved anything, you only master your trade by playing more games, and he will only get that with with LFC.

    1. If the board handle the Sterling situation correctly we could make this a win-win. No matter what Sterling and his agent say the fact remains he’s under contract until 2017 therefore we are under no pressure to sell.

The board should make it clear he either signs a 4 year contract for £100K a week or stays on £35K until 2017 without a squad number and unable to train with the first team squad. It should also be pointed out to the money grabbing imp that not only would he be missing out on an additional £65K a week if he doesn’t sign the contract but no club is going to pay a player who hasn’t played in a year £200K a week even if they don’t have to pay a transfer fee.

If the money grabbing imp comes to his senses and signs the £100K a week contract and we get an offer for him in excess of £50M, I would ship him out quicker than you can say “money grabbing imp” mainly because as good as he is I don’t think he’s irreplaceable and I do have doubts about his ability to sustain his form over a whole season even with a winter break in Jamaica.

Alternatively we could go Godfather on him, place the contract in front of him and a gun on the table and say, “Raheem, either your brains or signature is going to end up on that contract”.

      Delete
    2. Totally agree. If his contract was up at end of next season it might be a different situation but we will still get decent money for him next summer. Think prospect of losing that much could lead to a new contract and probably still attempts to force a move but at least then we will be in a better bargaining position....

    5. Edet - you're on fire!

I agree with so much of what has been said and speaking to The Analyser the morning the story broke, I tend to agree. This is getting really tedious and by the way he has brought the club into disrepute. Sterling should be told that he stinks and be kept away from the squad, "we'll talk at the end of the season" slapped with a 2 week wages fine, banished to the reserves until the Autumn or winter and sent to bed without supper.

I don't want to spend too much time focussing the boy - he has to also take responsibility for his agents as he has acted upon that advice

      Delete
  7. Btw... if we sell Sterling for £40mill QPR are entitled to £8mill and if its £50mill £12.5 as he has a 20 per cent sell on clause! Even worse if he is sold abroad the clause goes up to 25 per cent.

      http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-fc-weekly-salary-revealed-9297323#rlabs=2

I totally agree with the advice given by legend Thierry Henry on Sky Sports last night.

Speaking on the night it was revealed Liverpool have rejected an enquiry from Manchester United about Sterling's availability this summer, Henry told Sky Sports: "There is one thing I'd say about Raheem Sterling. We all know he's a Londoner. The way Arsene (Wenger) was talking yesterday indicates he wants him. But there's something I want to say about the lad.

“I think we all know that he's receiving some bad advice.

“You can't go out there and talk about your contract in the press. I think that you have to respect your fans, respect the club that you play for.

“And if you want to leave Liverpool or not, then when you have to make the announcement of leaving or staying, then do it – don't discuss your stuff in the paper.

“And I went through the same thing. When I was young I had a problem with Real Madrid and Monaco. Some guys who were around me were putting stuff in my head. I lost my football, mentally I wasn't there any more, I wasn't concentrating on anything.

“And therefore it looked like I was going to have a good career and then people were questioning me when I hadn't even started my career. Same thing with Raheem Sterling.

“You can blame the agent, the advisor, but you need to be a man about it also and say 'Enough, you're destroying my life, you're destroying my career'. He's a great product for Liverpool and he's going to be a great product for England.

“I will be more than happy to see him play for Arsenal but he is still a Liverpool player.”

    10. Don’t everybody wants his agents to represent them. £1m per month or something like that.

    11. That's the thing... Hamilton doesn't have an agent, he put that deal together himself. He even has a seperate deal/contract with the Mercedes road car side of business and merchandising rights.

    13. The team needs experience and there are questions like who should be the vice-captain? Sakho or Skrtel.

Do we have want it takes to land a big transfer?

Read an article last night in which it was suggested that Brendan should have to answer the following questions at his end of season chat with JW and co:

      1) We set out to finish in the top four, yet you later described our fifth-placed finish as ‘par’. What went wrong?
      2) Of the nine summer signings, only Emre Can has been a clear success – albeit in a different position to what we bought him for. Why has the success rate been so low?
      3) Mario Balotelli: £16m and four goals. What went wrong? And is anyone likely to pay anywhere near £16m to take him off our hands?
      4) Our Champions League campaign was a disaster. Why?
      5) The team often fell short in crunch matches this season, such as against Manchester United, Arsenal and Aston Villa in the FA Cup semi-final. Do they have a psychological weakness?
      6) We started the season with a back four, had more joy with a back three and wing backs, before finishing unconvincingly switching between both. Do you know what your best team and formation is?
      7) Have we done the right thing letting Steven Gerrard leave?
      8) Should we sell Raheem Sterling if a large bid comes in?
      9) Is Daniel Sturridge ever going to be fit enough to regain his form at Liverpool?
      10) What investment do you think this team needs to finish in the top four?

    14. I am sure BR can answer all the questions listed below but the only that I would believe would be the last one. He can mentioned 6 best players in the world and even if the money was available would they come to LFC. Not a chance.

    2. Ya looks like it, got pictures them signing, strange new training kit out and Raheem modelling in them....

    3. I have nothing but high respect for the stance our club has taken today. Sterling has two years left of his contract and we do not have to talk to him especially with his agent making outrageous comments to the press.

Sterling now has to decide whether he wants the agent to dictate his footballing career or to take control himself.

    1. Our manager feels he would have enough central midfield options in Milner, Allen, Jordan Henderson and Emre Can if Lucas went.

Totally delusional we need a proper replacement for Gerrard to assist Can and Henderson to provide the drive for our midfield as just bringing in Milner alone is just nowhere near good enough for a side trying to get back in the top 4.
The only reason to sell Lucas is to buy a top quality defensive midfielder in his place.

Our manager is very lucky if he gets a chance to manage LFC moving forward so he needs to do his best to get the fans back onside by bringing in the quality players that will make a real difference or we will regret our owners giving him a final chance by mid October.

    2. I can't take that article seriously. Jo Allen to hold the midfield? Very rarely have I seen Milner turn up in central midfield for England. Maybe BR can explain in his end of year appraisal with the owners.

    3. Brendan has blind faith in Allen. He chose him over Shelvey and now he seems to be ready to release Lucas. Allen’s performances have been underwhelming to say the least and his shown nothing to say it’s going to be any different. With everything we’re hearing feels like business as usual. Milner on a free, Ings for a regulation fee, hopefully that’s only the start of our transfer activity rather than the peak.

As for Raheem and his agent its reaching toxic levels and as I’ve said previously we should still aim to keep him, but if we can’t sell him abroad (hear Bayern Munich are showing interest). If he’s prepared to stand by and watch his agent lambast the club, then he has no respect for the club and the manager who he is always claiming to have a great rapport with.

Interestingly, Sebastian Coates has been producing superb performances under Dick Advocaat getting rave reviews. Pantilimon was saying the player just needed belief and a chance (a run) in the first team.

    4. Your last point Coates may be a better option than you know who.

  10. Brendan Rodgers has just said in his press conference that Sterling has two years left on his contract and he expects him to see it through.
