Does Raheem really deserve an increase in pounds Sterling?

By Emmanuel Phillips

Does Raheem Sterling really deserve parity with Daniel Sturridge?  It seems £100,000 per week is too low for the England International despite a £65,000 per week pay hike.

Since taking over from Hicks and Gillet, John W Henry and his Fenway Sports Group cohorts have placed a firm hand on the tiller implementing financial controls inside Liverpool Football Club to pull it back from brink of collapse.

It’s meant a lot of soul searching in moving on older players and instilling a belief system in young players coming through the ranks, bringing in players like Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge who career wise had failed to fulfil their promise and implement a style of play which means that pace, skill and technique are the key ingredients throughout the club.

Sturridge is a top quality goal scorer and in a sport where goal scorers pay the rent heads the pay scales.

With Suarez having moved on the ex-Chelsea and Man City forward was the automatic selection to be Anfield’s new King.   But, as good as Sturridge undoubtedly is as a striker and very skilful footballer, the one thing missing from his make-up is a robustness to get through a progranme of games without injury.  His Liverpool career has so far been littered with finicky injuries (14 at the last count) and Brendan Rodgers will have to buy-in some top class support and cover.
Sturridge’s problems this season have hastened the progress of Sterling with the youngster exhibiting talents in a multitude of positions and literally carrying Liverpool on his shoulders in the first half of the season.

The difficulty for the club is that they on the verge of breaking through to the top table with Europe’s elite clubs and cannot afford to let Sterling move on.   The football club doesn’t want to be a hostage to fortune, but the player and his advisers know they hold all the aces which is almost certainly the reason why contract negotiations are on the back burner until the end of the season.

It’s a fallacy that a destructive talent like Sterling is often asked to play at wing-back when a position more further up the pitch or centrally seems s better fit, but on the other hand should Raheem not play where he is asked?

In the last decade Liverpool have lost a succession of top players, but to lose a player they have groomed from the age of 15 would be a hammer blow.  We have struggled to buy top class players over the years, thus the loss of Sterling is incalculable to our future and even a transfer fee of £70 -80 million sends out the wrong signals.

The answer is yes, like it or not, Liverpool have to pay the player what he wants because in terms of ability it will cost much more to replace a player who will only improve and the thinking should be to improve the squad with top class players to play alongside him.
The transfer committee’s policy has brought Liverpool close to success without the celebratory cigar and Champions League football is a key ingredient for the club to remain on target and continue to be a cogent force in enticing world-class players to the club.

It is imperative that Champion’s League qualification is achieved.  If not, then the likes of Sterling, Henderson and Coutinho must stay at the club and if that means paying top dollar to achieve it then so be it.   In addition, with a fit Daniel Sturridge this is Liverpool’s future and I believe the board must change the dynamic and increase the parameters of their transfer policy to add world class talent to the core we already have the club.

The loss to Man United was a devastating blow.  It put us firmly on the back foot and as a consequence we are now without Gerrard, Skrtel and Sturridge going forward which once again puts into focus just how much we rely on the talented feet of Sterling who will now probably lead the line until the end of the season which says a lot about the supporting cast of Balotelli, Lambert and Borini.

  1. What is all the stuff in the news about Sterling not wanting to accept £180k-a-week. I do not get it seriously.

    1. He's a goner! Hopefully not a gunner. As the blog suggested earlier, do we pay him whatever he wants? Maybe we do but what's the limit? Generally I'm in favour of paying Sterling the going rate but at £180k I'm not sure. Can't help but think that he will be world class but that he also was disappointed at our campaign. That damn trip to Jamaica may have given him too much time to reflect!

    2. £180 thou a week… is beyond sense. He is talented player who could become a world-class player, but we are talking a player who has never had one great season. He was exceptional in the second-half of last season and was excellent in the first part of this season, although his form has dropped somewhat since January.

But for me, if he gets £180,000 a week after that, then what’s to stop Phillippe Coutinho knocking on the door even though he’s just signed a new contract or Jordan Henderson as captain and England regular to demand a similar amount. If they offered him £50k less or gave him and Henderson uniformity with Sturridge and he knocks that back then so be it unless he signs a five year plus contract, but then I’d have my reservations because if signs that contract and Liverpool were to sign a world-class player then how much to we pay that individual?

I like Raheem, Liverpool are better with him than without him, but basically we’d be giving £180,000 a week for what could be rather than what is.

    4. To be honest, it's disappointing and if he wants to leave he should. They say it's his agent, but his agent represents him so whatever his doing it's with his blessing. We pay £180k a week and what happens next, he has a storming season does his wage go up exponentially? Who else comes knocking on the door. If we managed to buy a world class player what would his starting price be wage wise?

If Jordon Ibe has an outstanding season will his agent coming knocking on Ayre's door looking for parity. For me, give him wage rise, but I it would be may £120k a week and if that's not good enough then it's time to say goodbye, but not to any team in this country.

They can always build performance incentives into his contract.

    5. Going rate for what exactly, Football is about common-sense and tactics. (Shankley’s words)

I would NOT pay £180K to Raheem Sterling, bearing in mind that Suarez left on a £200K contract, comparing the two, I know who is value for money.

    6. Sorry, to Sterling being offered £180k a week, I am sorry that is a no, no no for me. Have we all forgotten, not long ago he could not even gone pass me with the ball. He did nothing in Man U game, 6 goals so far all season. The KPI for football a game is the number of goals score full stop.

    7. Was watching an excellent documentary on John Barnes last night and it kills me to think a player who won major trophies with us never got anywhere near that crazy sum.

Sterling is just not worth that sum as he just has not done it enough to justify that figure – when he helps us win a league title or major trophy like FA cup or CL he can then start taking about an increase to over £100k a week, but to ask for £180k when he hasn’t won a single trophy in the game – is frankly taking the biscuit – and he can take that biscuit somewhere else in my book.

Totally agree with the comment that Coutinho will want to know whats going on after signing his contract just recently.

    8. Let’s be clear as it stands Sterling hasn’t asked for £180K or anything else since he decided to put contract talks on hold to the end of season, his representatives though have obviously decided to test the waters to see if any club would consider paying him £180K by giving this story to the newspapers along with a ludicrous claim about him being unhappy about being asked to play as a wingback.

It’s a move that he may regret come the summer because if anything it would have just hardened the club’s position on what they are prepared to pay.

    10. Whether it's £180k or £100k it's still a shed load and it's pay hike in anyone's language from the £35k his earning now and I agree it may have an adverse of effect on JW & co with it be played in out in the media.

I was listening to a few Liverpool fans calling into the radio station last night and the message was like the guy, but don't like the stand-off position he's taken up and why should the club be held to ransom by someone who hasn't got a track record of long-term excellence.

Who cares about whether its his representatives because as David's mate says the decisions are made and taken in Raheem's name. In the cold light of day if Raheem left where too? Barca... no! Real Mardid... would he play every week, same goes at Bayern? Man City and Arsenal are probably his only real options if he really wants to leave would we sell him to another English club...?

      Delete
    11. They should sell him & get the cash. There's zero commercial basis for paying Sterling that sort of money and his contract saga is becoming a distraction. He's just a player at the end of the day and ultimately replaceable. He needs to wake up and drink the reality juice. He ain't no super star yet!

    12. FBJ, I think I remember you saying something similar at the beggining of this Saga and it seems he may well be leaving. The money-grabber comment could well be a response to not just the fans, but to The Brodge's initial comment that he had been offered a wonderful contract and should sign.

As I was saying to David yesterday, don't like the way he and his advisers are going about this, but it also reflects on the club. The contract negotiations leave a lot to be desired and he's not the only player to comment on this. How can so many players be coming to the end of the contracts at one time?

Just before the most important game of our Premier League season we have one of our key players sitting down not with LFC TV, but in a controlled environment with the BBC saying how flattered he is to be linked with Arsenal. It looks bad allround and pretty unprofessional, especially where Ian Ayre is concerned. He can negotiate contracts with Dunkin Doughnuts and New Balance in his sleep, but it seems when it comes to players he has a particular blind spot. If he leaves, it's yet another top player leaving... how are we going to attract world-class players if can't keep hold of players coming through the ranks!?!

    1. This interview seems to confirm that he's off. Bi've accepted that now. Heard the following coulda, shoulda, woulda comment before too.

If, at that point in time, I was offered a contract, I most definitely would have signed straight away, probably for far less money than being said now," he said. "I just think the timing was a bit off."

    4. The interview was full of contradictions and made little sense, he’s only interested in winning trophies but would be flattered if those underachievers Arsenal came in for him, a club that has won exactly one trophy in seven years.

The interview was a public relations job to get the fans onside, hearing he didn’t have permission from the club to give the interview so chances are he’ll be dropped for Saturday.

    5. I WONDER WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF WE LEAVE IT OUT IN THE COLD UNTIL HIS CONTRACT ENDS.

    6. Raheem's interview was ill advised - we don't do that at this club and I'd like to think that he's disciplined in some way for what he's done. I was shocked that the interview ran for nearly 1/2 an hour. Surely a 2 minute statement would have sufficed.

Looks like we're going to need to take a tough stance on the lad whilst other players, of world class calibre, start to come through the door and some of our existing talents such as Jordan Ibe, emerge then review where we're at in the January window. After all he's not irreplaceable but are inability to attract and retain talent and manage player contracts is bemusing.

    7. Sorry Sterling thinks he has arrived, I am sorry no! no! no! He is still a long way from a finish article. This is the boy that BR model from Academy, the annoying bit is his claimed that Arsenal interest in him flattering him – load of rubbish. I would not mind us losing the game on Saturday, he should be benched and that permanently until he realised he is not as good as he may think he is. Or that he cannot hold the club to ransom.

    6. Like it or lump it you have to start Sterling from now til the end of the season. If champs league football is going to decide his contract situation then our best shout is to start playing Sterling in the front three. The club may well be aghast at the interview but they are just going to have to take it because we don't want a public rift distracting him from his game. I'll be very surprised if Rodgers entertains any questions about the situation in this afternoons presser. My team would be -

      Migs
      Can Toure Sakho
      Markovic. Hendo. Lucas Moreno
      Lallana. Coutinho
      Sterling

    7. At the very least, he must be disciplined for bringing the club into disrepute even though this seems to be a young lad being led up the wrong path by his agents.

    8. No worries with the team cause I'd assumed that Toure would play ahead of Lovren.

Although, I've just seen the pics of Daniel Sturridge doing the business with the ball in training!

    10. Glad to still have your weekly team selections to look forward to. For once think I'd go with your team with no tinkering (if Sturridge is out)...of they're shading things at the break I'd be going gung-ho and going two up top. Is Sturridge def out? Heard rumours earlier in week he might make it...

On sterling - all a big sideshow. Be amazed if he doesn't play. Also, don't really apportioned much blame to either him or the club, just modern football if you ask me. Couple of his quotes are a bit unfortunate but he only 20 years old and being badly advised. Can't blame the club on this occasion for me when he already has two years and they've offered him 100k. Surely he will sign a new deal in summer if club dismiss possiblity of him going in summer as I hear Rodgers just has...he isn't gone sit on 35-50k for two years just to force a move surely. Worst case scenario bit of bad blood and we ship him out next summer at a slightly reduced rate...

    5. None of this looks good all round. For the player, he goes on television for collateral damage and it all looks staged damaged. But, as much as Brendan Rodgers uses the Royal "we" are Liverpool card, the player's contradictions hints at him listening to his advisers or having his own ideas about where he should be playing on the field and for which club.

I agree with Stuart Pearce that the longer the contract remains unsigned the more leverage the player has and at the moment the indications are that he doesn't want to sign. If Raheem Sterling leaves Liverpool it will not be the end of the club by any stretch of the imagination, but it sends out the wrong signals that the club is not a super power as Brendan Rodgers indicated we still are in yesterday's press conference. Losing Suarez was huge, but he was a World Class player who let's make no bones about it in the last two seasons wanted to leave, but losing Sterling a player who graduated through the youth team will do untold damage to the way the club is perceived.

As a fan the fact that a player days before arguably the most important game of the season can sit in an interview and say he feels flattered by the interest of the team we are about to play says a lot about where his head space is. But more important than that, it shows the precarious nature regarding the club's fortunes and poses bigger questions for the future.

First, if we cannot keep our players how can we continue to forge ahead by letting contracts run down and trying to negotiate in the last year or two and how can we compete if we are not willing to pay big money transfers. Second, should we finish outside the CPL positions what happens next for the manager and the club, because as the Sanchez debacle proved we are not the top choice.

Finally, for me it's that thing where I want Raheem Sterling a quality footballer at my club. But, I don't want him at the club if doesn't want to be here.
