Sentiment wins the day but it costs us a vital two points - Everton 0 Liverpool 0

Blog by dedlfc

The game was headlined as the final derby farewell in the Premiership for Stevie G.
At the start, Spurs through the inspired hurricane Harry Kane beat their North London rivals and with Southampton's late winner against Queens Park Rangers a Liverpool win was imperative in the Merseyside derby to give the race for fourth a somewhat congested look.

The big surprise selection was Jordon Ibe starting ahead of Lazar Marković on the right, Adam Lallana's injury meant he was out and Steven Gerrard joined Philippe Coutinho behind Raheem Sterling as Daniel Sturridge continued on the bench.  There was again no place for Mario Balotelli.
The game started at a typically fast pace and the opening ten minutes were not entirely comfortable for us as Everton squeezed up whenever we were in possession in deep areas.

Coutinho played a delightful through ball for Sterling to run onto.  Arriving just before Everton keeper Robles hit the opportunity wide.
Coutinho was fouled on the edge of the area by Gareth Barry with the anticipation ramped up ten-fold.  Up stepped our Captain Fantastic for his moment of glory.   His free-kick heading for the top right hand corner of Robles goal, only for the Everton keeper to save well.

Everton showed zeal in the tackle early on with Kevin Mirallas, Steven Naismith, and Gareth Barry making strong challenges and pestering for the ball.
Liverpool then suffered a major setback when Lucas had to come off after 15 minutes for Allen probably aggravated the thigh injury that kept him out of the replay against Bolton.

Debutant Jordan Ibe almost scored a minute later after the ball rolled out to him in the Everton area from Sterling's deflected shot but his delay meant that the ball didn't end up in the net and instead went for a corner to us.
The exciting Ibe's run from the right and powerful rising drive had Robles beaten on the 27 minute mark, but not the post.  It would have been a wonderful first derby goal from the youngster.  That was the most notable effort of the half as we took more control of the game against a side that increasingly played on the counter.

One final chance of the first half fell to Coutinho which was easily saved by Robles.
Half-time thoughts:

It seemed Everton were able to target significant pressure on Sakho, who struggled with no outlet or movement further ahead.  There were also a couple of questionable headers that lacked conviction and accuracy.  Martin Skrtel battled with distinction, Emre Can stood up to Romelu Lukaku, and Jordon Ibe offered the same ball carrying ability as Lazar Marković.  Philippe Coutinho was unsurprisingly Liverpool's best player in the half as he continued his fine form.
Steven Gerrard was the worst.  The captain lacked movement and meaningful involvement except for his free-kick and the midfield wasn't faring too well with Henderson and Allen both providing middling contributions in the absence of Lucas Leiva.

A powerfully struck free-kick early by Mirallas in the second half flashed wide warning us of potential danger.  We pressed in Everton's half to create a good opportunity for a pass and goal on the counter.  Sterling was put through by Coutinho, and Gerrard acrobatically volleyed an effort goal wards from a corner that hit the head of Naismith.
Aaron Lennon introduction on the hour for Mirallas providing fresh legs out wide for the home team.  Daniel Sturridge’s introduction for Philippe Coutinho, was a puzzling decision by Brendan Rodgers considering Coutinho had been our best player.

For the next 15 minutes the game was scrappy with much of our attacks coming down the left. However, an attack on the right from Jordon Ibe brought an excellent chance for Alberto Moreno who couldn't sort his feet out to put us ahead.
Handbags!  It's about the only fiery incident in a quite mild mannered Derby as Naismith and Henderson got into a very furious set of verbals following a clash between Muhamed Besic and Ibe on the floor.

Both were booked after players from both sides waded into the row, with referee Anthony Taylor cooling the situation before dishing out the yellow cards.
Rickie Lambert came on for Raheem Sterling on 82 minutes as Rodgers looked for a late winner with Ross Barkley making a late entrance in place of the troublesome Muhamed Bešić a few minutes later.

Lambert almost made an immediate impact from a Gerrard set up but hit his shot straight at the keeper - he has to do better with those sorts of opportunities.
Barkley made an immediate impact with a pass for the marauding Seamus Coleman forcing a very good save from the commanding Simon Mignolet.

Gerrard curled our last chance just wide from a Sturridge pass with Liverpool lacking enough urgency in the final three minutes of stoppage time.
Positives

Another clean sheet with Can particularly impressing again.  Mignolet showed more aggression though he was rarely tested.  A win at home to Tottenham would make this result look a lot better. Jordon Ibe and Steven Gerrard illustrated the future and the past respectively and our manager would do well to be mindful of that in pursuit of qualification for a Champions League place.
Negatives

Another game in a season where we have not capitalised on other results and with games running out if we cannot win our games we will not achieve our set targets for the season.  Sakho in particular was strangely shakier in possession on the ball than of late.  Playing Stevie G for 90 minutes in games is no longer a viable proposition to our chances of winning games as his energy levels are nowhere near where they used to be.
It seems like our manager went with sentiment by playing Stevie G for the whole game rather than looking to win the game by keeping on our match winners.  Sadly playing him for the last 20 mins of games slows down the tempo of our game and we need our manager to be more ruthless and make decisions that our best for the team.

Man of the match: Jordon Ibe - Very encouraging debut, made great efforts to run at the Everton defence and was very unlucky not to cap his performance with a goal with his shot hitting the post and bouncing wide.
Everton (4-3-3): Robles; Coleman, Stones, Jagielka, Oviedo; McCarthy, Barry, Besic (Alcaraz, 86); Mirallas ((Lennon, 60), Naismith (Barkley, 85), Lukaku.

Liverpool (3-4-3): Mignolet; Can, Srktel, Sakho; Ibe, Henderson, Lucas Leiva (Allen, 16), Moreno; Gerrard, Sterling (Lambert, 82), Coutinho (Sturridge, 56).
Referee: Anthony Taylor

Manager's comments:

"Over the course of the game, I thought we were clearly the better team," "The balance in our game was very good."
"We switched off towards the end, in the last five minutes they had a counter-attack that led to their only shot on target.

"Apart from that, we defended very, very well and pressed the game well at the right moments and I thought we looked exciting in terms of our threat going forward.
"We needed a bit of luck in the final third of the field, we had opportunities both in the first half and the second half but just couldn't quite take them.
"But it's another clean sheet for us, a point away and we keep moving forward."

  1. That was a bad result for us considering Spurs and Southampton got wins. Gerrard should have been hooked but sentimentality got the better of Rodgers. I really hope that Lucas’s Injury is just a niggle. Tomorrow’s game is massive.

    1. if we do not win this one (Spurs) I believe we can kiss goodbye to the top 4 spots.

Jordon Ibe was the one real bright spark from the Derby and I would start him again versus Spurs.

    2. Hear Hear David, when the board went up and I saw Coutinho walking towards the dugout, I knew Brendan was NOT on his game.

All the injury hubris is just to stop us questioning his managerial acumen – SG still on the pitch when he was clearly struggling.

    3. What a difference a couple of months can make.
It sounds harsh, but at the start of this season, the news that Lucas Leiva is facing a spell on the sidelines – a few weeks, the ECHO understands - would have been greeted at Anfield with something approaching a collective shrug.

Now, it threatens to de-rail Liverpool’s season.
The Brazilian has been key in the Reds’ recent change in fortunes. Brought in from the cold in the autumn, he has re-established himself as a regular over the past three months, his smart, uncomplicated style enabling Brendan Rodgers’ side to rediscover their mojo after an awful start to the campaign.

    4. There’s nothing sadder than watching a great footballer skills denigrate before your eyes. Steven Gerrard still has within him in a moment to win a game and it’s what Brendan Rodgers was basing his decision to keep the ex-England captain on. The problem is that physically he obviously not as imposing and his ability to lift games purely on his physical presence over 90 minutes is obviously waning.

If you look at recent FA Cup tie against Bolton, his effect on the game in the second-half when Liverpool were one-down was negligible and it was only the brilliance of Sterling and Coutinho which pulled Liverpool out of the mire. Remembering that he had a break in terms missing a game he played the tie in dispatches.

What Brendan can’t do and I’m sure Stevie G, wouldn’t want either is sentiment to play a part in the manager’s thinking. Liverpool looked excellent without him against West Ham, but that doesn’t mean for his remaining time as a Liverpool player he won’t have a part to play. It just means that Brendan Rodgers needs to manage his time more productively, recognising when his captain is playing on empty because this is not the Liverpool leader who could play on empty and win an FA Cup final.

Lucas will definitely be missed and hopefully we won’t rue the decision to not bring in midfield cover the January. Given Lucas injury record and the work he’s been getting through lately it was also going to be risky.

Not too enamoured with Joe Allen as cover and agree with Baz in moving Can into the midfield zone. Real shame Jordon Rossitor’s injured as more than probable would have been given some responsibility and time in the Lucas role.

  2. Lucas is out for at least 3 weeks apparently, with matches against Spurs and Southampton and the FA Cup game with Palace all on the horizon it couldn’t have happened at a worse time. In his absence I’d give Emre Can a shot in midfield with Hendo. Johnso can come in and fill the space at the right of the back 3.

    1. Rodgers has just said in his press conference that Coutinho and Sterling should be able to play tomorrow. That’s some good news at least, Lucas will “Miss a bit of time”.

  3. So what’s the team for Spurs then? If Lucas, Coutinho and Sterling are all injured then I’d go –

    Ming
    Johnson Skrtel Sakho
    Markovic Hendo Can Moreno
    Ibe Lallana
    Sturridge

Doesn’t leave much on the bench though!

  4. Scans have revealed that Lucas will be out for 6 weeks and Rodgers said to the press yesterday that Can will stay in defence. Step forward Mr Joseph Michael Allen (the Welsh Xavi) time to earn your keep.

    3. Oh well Raheem being out will give an opportunity to Lallana, Marko or Ibe. You won’t be surprised to hear that I wouldn’t let Mario in the stadium tonight, everyone has gone on about how the Spurs match back in August was his best game, I can just remember him missing a couple of sitters and blaming the ball wide when their empty net was gaping, but yeah, it might have been his best game for LFC but there’s a pretty low base line on classic Mario performances in a Liverpool shirt.

  5. I don’t know how true this is about Sterling not signing his new contract?

    1. Yeah I heard he aint signing anything less that 120 grand a week. We’ll have to just give it to him in the end. It’s that or sell him in the Summer.

    2. When BR then go and said we are not going to overpay anyone, this does not help and on top then says praise Ibe (which I am sure he deserved) does not help the situation again.

    3. Totally agree with Mo, there is no tact or smart man-management from our boss.

    4. So is the club just meant to give Sterling anything him and his agent asks for? What happens to team morale if a young player becomes one of the highest paid members of the squad after a couple of seasons in which time we’ve won nothing. Henderson is probably stalling on his contract to see what Sterling is offered before he commits.

I’ve got no issue with Sterling earing £130K a week but it needs to be performance related; based upon CL qualification; league position etc, if the team does well he’ll do well financially.

And why criticise the manager for stating the club’s position? How do you think Brendan’s employer would have taken it if he publically stated that the club should pay Sterling whatever he wants and get him signed up, its ok for Gerrard to spout off who has had no involvement in the contract talks and has one foot out the door!

    5. What the manager should be saying is that negotiations are continuing behind the scenes – he doesn’t have to go into the details of what is causing the hold up.

    6. David,
      Thanks.

Is BR saying to RS you sign the contract and we are not going to give you more but if you do not it does not matter because we have Ibe.

And precisely and don’t upset the player. Like not buying a birthday cake on his birthday.

      Peters,

I think you have answered your own question - pay should be related to performance related and also do we want to keep him, are there possibility that another club will poach him etc…..

      Mo

    7. Its common knowledge that negotiations are on-going but he can only say that for so long before the media start to wonder what’s taking so long also I think the comment was more aimed at Sterling’s agent than the player himself as its well documented that they have a good relationship.

I’m not sure how you’re reading into his comments that it doesn’t matter if he doesn’t sign because we’ve got Ibe; its more a case that Sterling has been given the time and space to development into a talent and maybe in 2 years time the same can be said of Ibe, Brendan isn’t using Ibe as a bargaining chip.

      Delete
    8. Mo, that also goes for any player whether they are under contract or not. I just don’t think it makes good financial sense or for the morale of the squad if we offer Sterling a ridiculous amount of money just to get him to stay.

We can offer him a cake on his birthday though!

      Delete
    9. Peters,

It did sound like he was using Ibe.

      Mo

    10. I think it’s a bit strong to say he was using Ibe more just illustrating a point, don’t forget it wasn’t so long critics were claiming that Sterling was burnt out and were writing him off at 19.

I’m not saying that Brendan is solely responsible for Sterling’s improvement as a player because the majority is down to the player himself but he has nurtured his talent, protected when necessary and provided confidence I think it was a way of reminding him how far he’s come in a short time.

    13. I am not sure SG was implying that he should be paid to the full length of Liverpool operating income and beyond!!

    14. Better still sent him to Jamaica for a week to reinvent himself, and other things that happened at closed door.

    15. So what happens to team morale when he pops off to Chelsea in the Summer? Suarez, Sterling, How long before the likes of Sturridge and Coutinho are looking to get off to a team that keeps their best players? We need to start keeping the quality in the squad, if we want to be a big team then we need to pay the big wages. Mario’s on 80 grand a week doing nothing!

      Delete
    16. Mario is kicking footballs at empty bottles for £80,000 a week !!! What a world class player !!! LOL

    17. David ! David!! Mario works hard …standing still is not an easy task. I would have you know…just ask Mario (that I say with the every bit of sarcasm mustered)

    18. LOL – he is the best player in the world at ………………………………..standing still !!!!! :-)

    19. That must be a very nice piece of work. Cost £16m, pick up £4,2m every for 4 years, will be some loss to Liverpool to the value of £33m. It can be bad can’t?

    20. Look on the bright side … we got to have the lovable game character … Mario in person, but what I would give to have “that one “ in our team, at least we are guaranteed a few jumps, ample running and seven LIVES…(rubbing my palms in delight)
