Pre-match,
text messages were flying left right and centre with friends incredulous at
Brendan Rodgers decision and feeling seemed to be that he had set the club up
for a fall, expecting the worse.
That it didn’t
happen was mainly down to much maligned Kolo Toure, who led from the front and
Lucas Leiva with Joe Allen and Emre Can dropping back to restrict space for
Ronaldo.
As in the
first game we were impressive in the first twenty minutes enjoying good
possession without much threat in the final third. Mignolet, impressive behind a more stable
defence, saved well early on from Rodriguez after Skrtel’s heavy touch.
Ten minutes
later, almost a mirror image only this time it was Lucas casually caught out by
Rodriguez nipping in to supply Cristiano Ronaldo whose shot was well saved by
the alert Mignolet.
Increasingly
confident, Liverpool were beginning to press Real looking to build their own
pressure, but were constantly let down with Markovic and moreover the hardworking
Borini’s inability to hold on to the ball in the last third. A long ball up the field to relieve Madrid
pressure was quickly moved to the left finding the game’s most impressive
player, Marcelo, who delivered a sensational whipped ball across Toure for Benzama
to turn in on the half-volley.
In hindsight
Liverpool may see the game as a missed opportunity with Madrid certainly not at
their best. The second-half saw
Liverpool with more intent and looking to create with Moreno down the
left. The ex-Seville left-back produced
a sumptuous swinging cross in the first –half which begged to be headed in to
no avail.
In the
second period he was looked to launch forward at every opportunity linking up
with Lallana down the left. He had Liverpool’s
first shot of note with a long range drive which Casillas comfortably fielded
and then driving in the left found Lallana who characteristically span away from
his defender before shooting just wide of the far post.
The
substitutions of Gerrard, Sterling and Coutinho for Lucas, Can and Markovic
imparted more control in possession with Gerrard’s range of passing threatening
to finally set Borini free.
Marcelo
linking up for a one-two with Ronaldo, put in another delicious ball which Gareth
Bale coming on for James Rodriguez swept against the crossbar.
Man of the Match: Kolo Toure – The much maligned defender
particularly by this writer, enjoyed almost certainly his best performance in a
red shirt. Intercepting and blocking
time and again, even running the ball out of the defence he certainly made a
claim to hang on to the shirt with a committed performance.
Critical eye: Alberto Moreno was certainly one of
the games standout performers, matching Marcelo in his ability to get forward,
unfortunately suffered as did his team with the lack of potency upfront. He bounced back manfully from his mistake
over the weekend.
Emre Can’s
strength in possession was there for all to see and for a big man he certainly
possesses a good touch and hopefully a run of games will see him build-up his
sharpness and stamina. Lucas Leiva was
very effective and while the team certainly lost out in the creative stakes,
alongside Can and Allen the spine of team was a lot more combative.
Borini a willing work horse without ever
threatening in the final third and escape the clutches of Varane, did
enough to warrant being a member of Brendan’s squad going forward until
January. But what of Rickie Lambert who
failed to make the bench?
The
positives are that Brendan Rodgers knows he has players outside of those
considered to be first team performers who he can rely on and some of those
first teamers may just be wondering whether their stay on the bench will be
longer than they had envisaged.
The end game
is that we lost and although there were many positives the lack of a cutting-edge
upfront without Sturridge continues to be worry.

As Kop post rightfully stated no cutting edge has now meant we have lost out on a rare opportunity to get something from the Bernabeu - Toure was outstanding which has shocked all Liverpool fans watching the majority of his other performances
ReplyDeleteNot what we expected but great outcome.
DeleteAll,
DeleteIs this what LIVERPOOL FC IS all about, losing 1-0 is a great result. What would Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley think?
Mo
We played as if we were fearful of what would happen if we scored and forced Real to step up the gears but for me it was a great opportunity missed to get something from the game.
DeleteCredit to the much maligned Toure who deserved credit for a much better defensive performance.
Definitely a missed opportunity as their defensive unit were in cruise control with no significant threat. The Real Madrid choir who sang and chanted throughout (almost out voicing the loyal scouters) seemed much more likely to score than we did.but I got the feeling the guys stuck to the game plan BR set.
DeleteSelecting a weaker side in Europe is just asking for trouble, and against Real Madrid, did we not want to win? You don’t test Team B, against RM, and hope for a win, wrong resting some of the senior players.
DeleteSurprised likes of Gerrard, Henderson, sterling on the bench. However saying that I thought we played very well, passing was quick, sharp, I would have liked to see us break quicker on the encounter attack, and move forward more quickly. Apart from the goal from Benzem, we did not let Real Madrid play or get allot of possession, kept Rolando quite most of the part. We were better organised and defended much better, considering number of attacks by RM, and for me Toure was he’s best.
I hope now most of the senior players have rested, and I our priority is to beat Chelsea. I believe we can beat them.
Have faith in Brendan PLEASE! I think he got it right, spot on. Was brave to not start with Gerrard and Sterling. Bring on Chelsea they are due a defeat. I am pleased at the way we held off Madrid. No disgrace!
ReplyDeleteShowed great fight, but no real potency in the final third – stunning cross by Moreno in the first half begging for someone to get on the end of it (Markovic coming in from the right…?) to no avail. Kolo had a very good game as did Lucas and Moreno. Can has to get a run in the side. Rickie not even on the bench… must wish he stayed he’d stayed at Southampton.
DeleteKarl, must have felt proud in the stadium as before the game probably felt we were set up for thrashing.
For me, not seen any of the media but I think BR dishonoured the club and UEFA by playing a milk cup team in this fixture. I reckon he may field a stronger side when we play Bournemouth. Unimpressed with BR for sure.
DeleteWhile I can see where you are coming from Karl, of what use will it be if we filled the strongest team and we then ended the game with bags of goals against us? I could not really see how we were going to win the game. Even when our 3 members of our strong team entered the flame we kind of lost the momentum of going forward that was apparent before they were introduce.
DeleteHave you forgotten we were beating 3:0 at Anfield with our strongest team? Sorry I may be alone on this, I was impressed with work rate of those guys. Kolo to me was outstanding. They were good going forward even though with hesitation. I did see the sort of threat Marwick and Can carry. Give BR the credit for being brave man!!!!!!!!!
They were good going forward even though with hesitation – this is exactly what I was saying to David last night. Sound like BR told them to defend and when they went forward they did not know what to do.
DeleteThen maybe we don't deserve to be in the competition. We were fortunate not to lose by 3 or 4 goals. Real Madrid didn't really come out of 2nd gear. BR will not get credit from me if he was simply resting players for the Chelsea game. One fan said in the hotel, last night that it cost him a grand for that nonsense. Even if we plan to play for a draw, we should select the best players available to a achieve that.
DeleteKolo was hesitant at times as per usual but overall did play well against a hell of a strike force that receive regular, good quality supply.
It's pretty a emotive issue especially if you've paid your cash to go out there. But there's is the other view as Jan who is a season ticket holder said "Have faith in Brendan".
DeleteObviously, should we beat Chelsea he'll feel vindicated as feels the performance last backed his decision.
It's a difficult one, but every player who was dropped last night has hardly been pulling up trees this season. They played in the 1st leg (Madrid in cruise control) and were awful against Newcastle, so they no right to believe that would be in the team. Maybe, he could've started with Gerrard, but the amount of work the midfield did to shut down the space around Ronaldo who knows and he could've started with Sterling, but doesn't Markovic deserve a shot after some pretty inept performances from others or did Brendan spend £20 million for a sub? Only so many below par performances you can have before squad players start questioning why they are not playing.
Borini ran around a lot offering himself as an outlet, but for me he's a second striker. Saw the best of him along side Conor Wickham and just doesn't have that surge to take away from defenders when he playing up there by himself.
Even with Gerrard, Coutinho and Sterling on in the final 20 minutes we failed to create a chance. Will be interesting to see who makes it off the bench come weekend.
The issue is also beyond cash. I understand loyalty and all that but I'm not really prepared to have blind faith in BR. I can't accept, whether I splashed cash or not, that we should field a weakened side in the top table of European competition - one we have craved for a number of years. We are not running head to head with Chelsea and could be some 15 points behind by the weekend. My point is that there's no chance of winning the league. Why are we craving a top four finish....? Is it by any chance so that we qualify for a competition that we don't really respect?
DeleteDon't get me wrong, if he felt that Sterling, Gerrard, Coutinho and Henderson are not our big game players and are out of form then fine and they should not be selected for the Chelsea game. Can't accept if this is simply BR being disrespectful to the champions league as opposed to the premiership when we're so far off the top. If it was later in the season when we're still challenging in the premiership then I'd understand a bit better but if not I think BR still has a lot to learn. Must say it must have really hurt those players who were dropped 'cause the atmosphere and ambience is just amazing.
May just galvanise them to start playing!
DeleteHe could just have come out and said those players were dropped as he initmated after the game when he said they hadn't been doing the business. As a manager having watched our last few performances if he did nothing and we got hammered again last night, he'd have received some serious flack. How long should he wait for those players to turn around the season?
Most of the said players have played in all the League games so far and three Champions Leagues games and we are still harking back to the Spurs game as the last time we played well. At no stage did BR say he he was thinking about Chelsea, could it be he just got fed up of his players under performing!?! Kolo had one great game doesn't mean to say he's the future, but it's been a season when you can count top performances from Liverpool centre-halfs on two fingers and as you say Lovren and for that matter Johnson and Coutinho after missing out last night will have to re-focus.
I wasn’t happy when I first heard the team selected but on reflection there is some logic to what BR done.
DeleteWe played our so-called strongest team at Anfield and got completely outclassed, doing the exact same thing doesn’t seem sensible. Putting trust in players who have had bit parts this season should actually help team spirit.
For the most part we contained the best attack in world football at a time when our defending has rightly been called into question.
We’ve been out of the top European competition for 5 years, no surprise its taken us time to find our feet; Man City whose squad is a lot stronger are still stumbling.
I don’t think there’s anything disrespectful about setting up for a draw away at Madrid.
The only way to improve in the CL is to be in the competition every year, aiming for a 4th place league finish in our first season of juggling league and European competition makes sense.
