After ‘SterlingGate’ Liverpool arrived at Loftus Road with the England manager on hand to watch Sterling who after traumatic week played out in the media must have been hoping to put in all behind him. Glen
Johnson and Adam Lallana made a start as did Emre Can returning from long-term
injury for his first Premier League start which Rodgers used as the conduit to
give his captain a more attacking role behind Balotelli.
Liverpool
were dreadful from start to finish with Martin Skrtel and Dejan Lovren made to
second rate by 33 year-old Bobby Zamora who terrorised the international pair
for most of the afternoon. The standard
of Liverpool’s defending is in such a state that opponents must be licking
their lips in anticipation with our inability to defend from dead ball or long
ball situations.
QPR should
have two up in the first half hour.
First, Glen Johnson’s half-hearted tackle allowed Charlie Austin to
waltz through and Skrtel the second line of defence could do little better
missing the ball completely before Mignolet saved well from the striker. Zamora leading the line expertly then found
Leroy Fer who inexplicably clipped the bar from close range.
Liverpool
were rocking and Zamora again found his partner who climbed well to head
against the bar with Mignolet left floundering.
Balotelli
struggling to be the focal point Liverpool require upfront found Gerrard with a
delightful flick. Gerrard manoeuvred himself
past Caulker before curling his shot just beyond the post.
Rodgers
moved his captain back into his deep lying role after half-time. QPR were still
on the ascendancy as Sandro crashed in a shot which Mignolet did brilliantly to
save having seen it late.
As QPR tired,
Liverpool led by our most incisive player Raheem Sterling, grabbed the lead in
fortunate circumstances.
After being
brought down, Sterling sized up the situation quickly taking a quick free-kick
to play Johnson in on the overlap. The right-back
crossed in front of the goal only for Richard Dunne to slice the ball in.
With Liverpool’s
very own ‘Chuckle Brothers’ at the centre of defence there was no chance of
resting on our laurels, particular with the inability to control and dictate the
midfield.
Every
Liverpool fan now knows the scenario having seen it played out over the last
ten minutes in matches where we defend deeper trying to hold on to a lead. Not for the first time a Liverpool defender
was beaten to a header as Austin knocked the ball down for substitute Vargas to
equalise with Enrique who was at fault on three occasions during the move, left
for dead.
Steven Caulker throws his hands up in despair |
The last few
minutes of the match were a comedy of errors.
Sterling, who worked hard all day in both halves of the pitch, picked
the ball up in the middle of the pitch, before spinning away from Henry to find
Gerrard who in turn found Coutinho. The
Brazilian cut in before firing in a slightly deflected shot to leave the diving
McCarthy with little chance.
Within two
minutes QPR were back level with Liverpool’s achilles heel raring it’s ugly
head from a kick-off resulting in corner.
Unable to deal with Leroy Fer’s cross following the corner, Vargas equalised
for the second time heading home.
Unbelievably,
Liverpool won the game in the fourth minute of injury time. Maybe for the first time Liverpool headed out
from a free-kick with Coutinho picking up the loose ball before threading
through a superb pass to Sterling running in behind the defence. His square pass found the retreating Caulker
who could only inadvertantly knock the ball in give Liverpool an underserved
victory.
Man of
Match: Raheem Sterling - showed courage
and strength of character in abundance following a stressful week. He showed for the ball throughout and put in
a shift helping in defensive areas and was the prime instigator having a hand
in all three goals, showing his value in a side misfiring in defence, midfield
and upfront.
Critical
eye: Brendan Rodgers has to start taking
the blame and curing his teams ills for the lack of defensive cohesiveness as
he is now in his third season in charge and we have struggled again. In the last two seasons the club has spent
almost £50 million on Illori, Lovren and Sakho with no improvements.
The midfield
looks bare barring Henderson with its inability to control the centre. Time again we watch the opposition drive 50
yards up field without so much as a tackle. Gerrard struggled in a more
attacking role as the midfield were unable to buy him the time and space to
operate in.
Mario
Balotelli is struggling to lead the line on his own and readily admits to being
more comfortable in a two. His lack of
movement in and out of the box is hurting us offensively and Brendan must, in the
absence of Sturridge, get the Italian to play on the last man, using his
strength and pace (which he may have been attempting to do playing Gerrard
further upfront).

What really impressed me about Sterling's performance yesterday was that he puts in a shift and a half on top of his attack minded play, filling in at right back where needed. He's a special talent that needs to be managed carefully. I hope we've got players, coaches and former professionals to look after this talent.
ReplyDeleteExtremely poor performance all round with the notable exceptions of Sterling and an exciting cameo by Coutinho.
DeleteCoutinho !! What a player and Raheem Sterling’s run for the third goal wow!!!
DeleteAlberto Moreno was left out of the Spanish under 21 squad during the international break for ‘technical reasons’ and didn’t make the bench against QPR, now we’re recalling left back Brad Smith from loan, rumours abound that there is a situation with Moreno.
DeleteSunday was the worst performance I’ve seen from Liverpool under Rodgers, we were absolutely rotten. Balotelli is killing us, he gives us nothing, he doesn’t make runs he doesn’t pass he just spaffs shots wide from 20+ yards and mopes about. I would play Markovic, Sterling or Borini in the strikers role ahead of him at the moment, at least they would look interested. In the interest of balance and credit where it’s due Mignolet had a thoroughly decent game, the issues are still there when he comes for the ball but his shot stopping got us out of jail on a few occasions.
Big match tomorrow night and it’s frightning what Madrid might do to us, B-Rod had better pull something out of the hat, dropping Super Mario would be a start. All being well with Moreno I’d go –
Migs
Manquillo Skrtel Lovren Moreno
Stevie Allen
Sterling Hendo Lallana
Markovic
Not quite sure about your attack on this occasion. If Balo doesn't play then Lambert should get the nod.
DeleteRicky should be put out to pasture, Southampton got the better end of that deal I’m afraid.
DeleteHis movement is lacking and maybe with Stevie playing further upfront BR was trying to get Mario to play on the last man. The midfield couldn’t buy Stevie the time and space on the ball.
DeleteThe defence was horrendous right across the line particularly Lovren, Skrtel and Enrique on the first goal was pathetic. On one occasion Glen Johnson seemed to ‘bottle out’ of a tackle says a lot about him these days. Without Sterling we’d have probably lost the game.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see him pack the midfield in an attempt to add some steel and stability with Mario upfront.
Can’t believe I’m saying this but I like to see Borini start tomorrow as unlike Mario/Lambo he will make runs behind the Madrid defence which will unsettle them more than the other two standing still and waiting for the ball to come to them. Gerrard needs to drop back into his holding role but apart from that I agree with Barry’s selection just hope BR sees it the same way.
DeleteInteresting to hear Jamie Carragher calling for Raheem Sterling to start upfront tomorrow.
DeleteIt’s basically anybody but Mario isn’t it? At times on Sunday it was like we were playing with 10 men. Sterling could definitely do a better job up front but I think that he’d cause more damage coming from Number 10 or in off the wing. Markovic has played as an auxiliary striker before, I think with his pace he could cause some problems as a front man / false nine kind of thing. Alternatively Borini is definitely an option, I didn’t think I’d be saying that 3 months ago.
DeleteThere a possibility today that BR may through light on Moreno situation, any one with updated information on him. Like Livingston pointed out, we have nothing to loose playing Borini after all Mario missing open goal at his mercy, plus the countless minutes he got on the field with nothing show, we may as well try Borini. Mario just fail to try and get into that box. The two chances he would possibly have taken “that is with a big if” were intercepted by QPR players who believed they rather score against themselves than Mario doing so.
DeleteThe problem we have is there is no one of Gerrard’s ilk in front to supply Mario/Lambert/Borini, the way our great number 8 used to.
DeleteAnd since the departure of Alonso, we have struggled with replacing that presence especially the passing side of things, Emre is meant to fill that void but injuries have curtailed that promise for now.
I would love to see Markovic and LLalana support RS in driving the Madrid’s backline towards their own goalline and with Casillas in goal who knows, it could be a tale of two goalies, Mingnolet or Casillas…the die is cast
On Moreno, this just popped up on the Echo. Looks like everything is fine and he expects to play. False alarm!
DeleteAlberto Moreno insists he is relishing the chance to test himself against Real Madrid – and says games like this are why he joined Liverpool FC.
The Spaniard is expected to start when the European champions visit Anfield on Wednesday, having sat out Sunday’s 3-2 win at Queens Park Rangers.
Liverpool need a result, having slid to defeat at Basel in their last Champions League group game, and Moreno says he is keen to test himself against the competition favourites.
He told the ECHO: “Of course I’m looking forward to the game. Liverpool against Real Madrid, it’s one of the biggest matches you could ever play in.
“Liverpool is a great club, and one that should be always challenging for honours. And one of the reasons I wanted to come here was to play in big competitions, and big games, just like this.
“I know that Liverpool hadn’t played in the Champions League for five years before this season, so definitely one of my motivations was to come and play in this competition.
“I didn’t expect to be facing Real Madrid so soon in my Liverpool career, but when you play in the Champions League you have to face the big teams sooner or later. And all I can say is that I’m very motivated for the challenge.”
Moreno experienced both sides of the coin in two encounters with Real last season. His Sevilla side were beaten 7-3 at the Bernabeu last October, but won the reverse fixture 2-1 in Seville back in March.
“I saw the ups and the downs in those games,” Moreno said. “I had the joy of having beaten Real Madrid at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, but also the sadness of conceding seven at the Bernabeu!
“So I know it will be a tough game. I know how dangerous it is to play against Real’s attack.
“I think we will have to be more careful defensively against Real Madrid, very careful. We will have to be at our very best to take something out of the game.”
He added: “I know how the supporters are feeling. They will all be looking forward to it as much as we are.
“To get the opportunity to play will be great, and hopefully we will get the three points as well.”
Moreno has settled well at Anfield following his £12m switch from Sevilla in the summer. The 21-year-old’s move to Merseyside was a protracted affair, but he says he never had any doubts that it would go through.
He said: “Last season, when the rumours started, my agent and my father told me to forget about them, and made sure I kept focused on Sevilla.
“Then when the season was over, that was when negotiations really moved forward. That was when I started to think about Liverpool. I was always thinking the move was going to happen, and I was happy with that.”He added: “My first week here was the toughest. It was all different for me; different place, different weather, different language.
“But since then, I have settled in very well. It is helpful having all the Spanish players here, the likes of Manquillo, Suso and Jose Enrique.
“I have no words to describe the Liverpool supporters. They’ve been very supportive with me, and their passion is amazing.
“I actually felt very emotional when I heard for the first time “You’ll Never Walk Alone” at Anfield. That was a very special moment for me. It will be the same on Wednesday I’m sure.”
So the hullabaloo was just white smoke with no new Pope.
DeleteCome on you Redmen, lets stuff the galaticos
I was thinking about the goal keeper situation after the QPR game. Madrid, rather than just concentrating on bundling the ball over the line from corners and set pieces are more likely to be a bit more precise and try to get shots in from various distances, this might play into our hands a bit in that Mignotel is undoubtedly a very good shot stopper. He’ll have a busy night, that’s for sure.
ReplyDeleteChelsea fans are even more confident than us the red fans. One told me that Liverpool had never been beaten by RM in the 3 times they met. Well one side of me is saying if it is the Liverpool of last season that is playing tomorrow, I will comfortably take the front seat in my living for this game. But right now, one of my finger will be on the turn off button should the score line get silly.
DeleteHow I wish we managed a draw at Basel, this will not be such a pressurised game because we would have had 4 points on the board, I know Basel is bound to fall on the sword in Bulgaria. Basel are already celebrating in the believe that RM will get the 6 points and they will go ahead and get the 6 points against the Bulgaria side, therefore claim the second spot. Good luck to them.
DeletePlease do not start Phillipe. He is an impact player he should be use as such.
It’s going to be a hard game.
DeleteMo
I also would like to see if the Borini/Sterling axis would work for us.
DeleteThe truth is no one in the entire football world will predict a Liverpool draw let alone a win. We are super underdog in this and that is the fact we need to face up to squarely.
DeleteSomewhere, somehow we have to get back the intensity and drive we had previously, because without it we are easily picked off all over the pitch.
DeleteA tad surprised at the suggestion about Borini but yeah he could probably do a job. Need intensity - is possible to break them sown.
DeleteWe are at home so we need to be confident that if our defence can have a good game for a change we can get a positive result.
DeleteKoppost.
DeleteThe answer is someone call “L SUAREZ”. Could we have him back just for this game?
Mo
Brendan needs to light a fire under Mario if he plays tonight and for the future. It’s not like we bought him on loan.
DeleteOur struggles are not all about Mario and Brendan has got to get a grip, hopefully starting tomorrow and do remember they haven’t got the best defence and midfield (defensively) either.
Fabio Borini - the first player in the history of the game to go from 4th choice Striker to 2nd choice Striker in the space of 2 months whilst barely kicking a ball!
DeleteRather started out as a striker after all. But I do think its asking a lot if we're expecting the kid to lead the line. Barry - the problem with Lambert is that I thought he was bought as a 4th striker and the expectation that Borini would not be around. I also thought we'd have been aiming for marquee striker too. Balo's confidence is probably at a low ebb - I think he needs a couple of image consultants on the pitch to fix up his body language.
DeleteIn total agreement with your last sentence.
DeleteMo
Sorry Mo. Your wishes are not granted! The last time I felt this way about Liverpool playing a team was when we had to face Spurs last year season.
DeleteEdet, I would get back to you on the scoreline after the game lol!!! And as for Suarez, Ha Ha Ha I am sure he would love to take a chunk out of the Madrid back four.
DeleteDave, hear hear, saying that when was the last time that happen hmmmmmmm not in a while.
Livi, we should get Balo a barber for that ridiculous haircut …
Our struggles this season can in a very large part be contributed to our complete and utter failure to plan for and mitigate the effects of Suarez’s exit. Regardless of how good or bad your defence is, If you can’t score goals the opposition is going to be pretty confident of taking points off you.
DeleteAs has been discussed ad nauseum we were never going to get a like for like replacement but we should have been planning for Luis’ exit since Sept 2013 and all we came up with was a 33 year old target man and the busted flush that is crazy Mario. Hindsight is great but we really should have seen this coming.
True to a point. Agreed he should’ve been on the ball re Suarez given that he knew the player as some point would get his wish and leave.
DeleteBut, you cannot go season after season letting in goal after goal. Okay, if Suarez had stayed or Sturridge hadn’t been injured (which is probably the key problem right now), we’d have been banging in more goals, but at the end of the day from the day Jose came to town and laid down that template to stifle Gerrard we’ve struggled and as yet he (BR) doesn’t seemed have found a way to combat it.
If doesn’t even matter if Stevie is playing in his deeper role or A N Other teams are still going after us. You build your team from the back not the other way around (as Man U are finding out) and season after season we are letting in more and more goals. I’m not saying Andre Wisdom is the second coming, but something struck me the other day, Brendan rids himself of defenders.
Chelsea are probably the only team in the Premiership with four out and out defenders back there and with Matic in front of them it makes them formidable. They’ve added the striker they were lacking last season, hence full steam ahead.
While we all have conceded defeat before the ball is kicked, I hope the score line will not be embossing.
DeleteWe will win !!! – we are at home and need to with the crowd’s full and vocal support show Madrid that we mean business !!!! COME ON LIVERPOOL !!!!
DeleteI share David’s optimism and believe we might spring a surprise
DeleteI am highly optimistic that we will beat them – we will turn up tonight up for this game and finally show the potential that our side obviously has !!!
DeleteLets deal with the so-called Champions of Europe !!!!
It will not be a surprise to beat them – their defence is also very poor so it could be a goals fest !!!! It might be a case of which keeper performs better on the night.
Agreed, time for Balo to step up. High intensity and we should be ok.
DeleteYes and they’ll have two key players missing in Bale and Ramos missing. Start off on the front foot and keep the high energy going.
ReplyDeleteListening to Talksport this morning we may as well not turn up!
Yap, all the players need to step up, we press on them from the start, and keep at them, i dont see why we cant get a result from them. Our defence need to be at best ever, and not make silly errors.
DeleteEasier said than done.
DeleteMo
Correct Billy. If we sit back, we get mullered, so have to press and look to create.
DeleteBrendan should send them out with the rallying cry of “Ronaldo’s never scored at Anfield in five visits, let’s make sure that continues tonight!”
Roma 1: B.Munich 7. I pray not for this sort of scoreline tonight.
DeleteMo – I want positive talk from the whole group today !!! Come On !!!!!!
DeleteWhy can’t we win 7-1 ??
DeleteWe’re going to get beat.
DeleteDavid,
DeleteI really do want to be positive and have confident in my team. After the way they played against QPR, I am not too sure unless they can pull something out of the bag. But will I feel better tomorrow if I expect us to loose and then we win or draw tonight?
Mo
Ps Deep down inside, I think a win or a draw simply because we have the crowd and who will scare them to death.
David it is no good sweet talking or talking tough outside of the field at Anfield and the players stepping over that white line refusing to put on the fight for the shirts the put on. Even Alonso do not give us a chance. So we do not need positive talking, but positive delivery on the pitch that is what count. Then tomorrow, I will be the one to lead the praises of the boys if the outcome is anything but defeat.
DeleteWhen we win I will not say nothing on here – mark my words !!!
DeleteNo problem David we can handle that. Right now this is where we are at in the minute. I can’t afford to raise my hope beyond the performance level our team.
DeleteSeen reports that BR is going to start with Mario!! Based on the fact we’ll be playing Madrid with 10 men I’ll take a draw right now.
DeleteThat is making the draw a very uphill task!!!
DeleteEdet,
DeleteAll the negativity.. it’s because you think they’re brilliant, we’re crap or somewhere in between?
Spot on! I think we are where we are right now because we only turn up at the game against Spurs. RM since they were beaten by At.Madrid, they’ve put together strings of wins in La Li Ga including the two in Champion League.
DeleteProbably most of us are worried about the same thing. £120 million of spending and we look relatively lightweight without Sturridge and Suarez, centre-halfs and Stevie hasn’t performed this season… as yet.
DeleteGuess we have to hope “It’s Super Mario Time” tonight and the team puts it together with a couple of standout performers coming to the fore. Don’t see why we can’t get a result personally, as long we start well, keep focused and play to our strengths (move the ball quickly and keep up the intensity with some incision in the last third).
Also, we have to test Casillas as his confidence looks shot.
Ps And keep Enrique on the bench!
Sorry need to also have Johnson watching from the stands because he is a serious liability !!!
DeleteIf he plays Johnson and Mario, I suspect we should be carrying two passengers – two men light.
DeleteWe were so poor due to early KO ruined my weekend.
DeleteHurry on back Sturridge, Balotelli is such a disappointment
