After the disappointing loss away at West Ham, Brendan
Rodgers made seven changes welcoming back Kolo Toure and giving life-long Red
Rickie Lambert the honour of captaining the side. In the absence of Steven Gerrard (rested)
and Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson (injured), the seventeen year old Jordan
Rossiter called the “new Steven Gerrard” by none other than Robbie Fowler was
handed his debut.
Middlesbrough started well with former Liverpool player Daniel
Ayala rising well from a corner to head straight at Simon Mignolet. Almost immediately, from a long through ball
Middlesboro goalkeeper Blackman made a hash of a straight forward slide and
pick-up after a misunderstanding with his defender. The goalkeeper in a bid to make a mends
blocked Lambert’s shot only to see the youngest player on the pitch Rossiter
with remarkable composure and technique side foot the ball from 20 yards into
the corner of the net. Blackman will be
disappointed by his initial decision in rushing out and embarrassed by his
decision to try and kick away the shot.
What a fantastic start to Rossiter’s Anfield career,
hopefully the first of many. Like Gerrard,
Rossiter fires of his short passes and like Gerrard shows for the ball in tight
areas. But unlike Gerrard is not backward in coming forward in barking out his
orders.
Very noticeable in the first twenty minutes was Liverpool’s attempt
to press high up the pitch and move the ball with a quicker tempo on a pitch made
slicker by the persistent rain. It made
a change from the lethargy which had so marked the last two losses. Even with the difference in personnel we lacked
stability and leadership throughout the spine of the team looking lightweight
in midfield, less assured in the centre of defence and in failing to cater for
Lambert’s attributes only highlighted his lack of pace in leading the line.
Liverpool’s weakness from corners reared its ugly head again
with Kike left unmarked shooting over and then Tomlin controlling Rossiter’s defensive
header to volley superbly only for Mignolet to palm away a late swerving ball. Middlesborough were impressing in their
forays in the final third with the pace of Adomah, the hold-up play of Garcia
Martinez and the quality in behind of Tomlin causing consternation in between
the lines.
Tomkins fired off an early warning shot in the second-half
cutting in front the left, before evading the tackle and firing his shot wide
of the target.
Liverpool had claims for a penalty with Toure balked by Omeruo
as the defender lined up a header from a corner.
The simple facts are we just cannot defend and after 62
minutes from a free-kick given for a handball against the hapless Sakho. Adam Reach breezed into the area almost unnoticed
heading home from close range. It was
nothing more than Boro deserved.
After 70 minutes Liverpool hadn’t created one clear cut
chance of any note which is already becoming a trait and looked horribly one
dimensional in struggling to get in behind and resorted to straight balls
through the middle with the full-backs unable to provide the width so important
to Brendan Rodgers style of play.
Clayton produced a powerful drive after being found by the
impressive Tomlin which Mignolet could only palm away a few yards with Martinez
bearing down on goal, fortunately Toure produced a last ditched tackle to clear
his lines. Boro with their intensity,
pace and confidence looked more Liverpool than Liverpool.
Tomlin the night’s most effective player by some distance
produced an imperious piece of skill late on with a fantastic reverse pass
finding Clayton who hit the outside of the post which an angled shot. It was the last real chance before
extra-time.
After a non-eventful first half of extra-time Jose Enrique
fired in a shot which Blackman pushed for Sterling to curl in a shot which the
goalkeeper parried behind for a corner.
Liverpool were at last showing some quality following Suso’s
introduction and finally got their heads in front when the mercurial Spaniard
drilled home after some fine link up play by Lallana and Enrique.
With the final whistle beckoning Sterling inexplicably gave
the ball away, Kolo Toure showing unbelievable naivety for such an experienced
defender upended Bamford instead of shepherded out the Boro substitute.
Bamford was coolness personified from the spot which we
should have guessed was a sign of things to come.

Some of you may be happy just to scrape through but I think it shows that we are struggling all over the pitch.
ReplyDeleteOur keeper was celebrating like we had won the FA Cup but he should be extremely embarrassed this morning because he has conceded a goal in the game and 13 (yes I said it 13!!!) in the penalty shootout. He is not doing the job expected of a keeper at such a high profile club. The quicker we bring in reinforcements the better.
Any news on who might be fit for the weekend yet?
ReplyDeleteJust had a look at some pictures from todays training session on the Echo website, Hendo and Coutinho both involved but no sign of Sturridge or Allen.
DeleteFrom the Echo –
DeleteLiverpool FC striker Daniel Sturridge is running out of time to prove his fitness ahead of Saturday’s Merseyside derby at Anfield.
The prolific Reds striker, who has been sidelined for the past three weeks with a thigh strain he suffered on international duty, had hoped to make his comeback against Everton.
However, the 25-year-old has yet to return to full training at Melwood and appears increasingly unlikely to feature in the 223rd derby.
Even if Sturridge makes considerable progress over the next 48 hours the best he can hope for is a place on the bench.
Liverpool remain hopeful that Jordan Henderson (hip) and Philippe Coutinho (groin) will be fit for duty against Roberto Martinez’s side. But Glen Johnson, Joe Allen, Emre Can and Jon Flanagan remain sidelined.
We’ve drawn Swansea at home in the next round of the Capital one Cup
ReplyDeleteWe certainly look like underdog for that one as well - Liverpool vs Swansea. Borini a player valued at £14m, surely should have some reputation behind him. Do not be afraid, Borini will turn up with his country man Balotelli on Saturday. Wishful thinking ehh.
DeleteThe day we are the underdogs at home to Swansea is the day I start fire bombing. We are Liverpool tra la la and all that. This weekend for the Derby I reckon we will be going back to the old 3-5-2 which helped when we went 2-0 down at West Ham and served us well last year when we had a few Injuries. I expect something like –
DeleteMigs
Skrtel Lovren Sakho
Sterling Hendo Gerrard Lallana Moreno
Balotelli Borini
Loads of big lads at the back to deal with Lukaku, Sturridge and Markovic to come off the bench if we are getting hammered.
Who is there please to give Gerrard a break. I feel he needs it like seriously. Let him come from the bench and influence the game.
DeleteI thought Lucas did alright in that holding role on his own on Tuesday night, he looks better in there on his own than part of a two anyway so I’d be happy to see him rotated with Stevie as and when required. There is no way that we are dropping Stevie for the Derby though, not a chance.
DeleteBrendan seems to be determined to persevere with a back 4, so Sakho to the bench with the two Spanish lads at fullback. Don’t think Hendo will past a fitness test which leaves us with the old legs of Gerrard/Lucas in midfield alongside Lallana. Up top Mario, Sterling and Borini.
DeleteI reckon we’ll scrape a win only because Everton seem to be struggling even more than us! Would like to see Suso given the nod ahead of Borini but its highly unlikely BR will deal one from the bottom of the pack in a derby game
Love to see Suso given a chance. Seems a lot stronger than the last time he played in a Merseyside Derby and is a goal threat.
DeleteWill Brendan produce a shock and pick local boy Rossiter in the match day squad?
It appears Enrique may have a run out. He did pretty well on Tuesday.
DeleteYep, I think it's going to be Lucas and Gerrard holding up the midfield. Lucas didn't do as badly against championship opposition the other night but he seems to go missing when Gerrard is in the holding role. Perhaps he will have recovered from cramp. Wonder whether it will be Lukaku or Naysmith charged with man marking Gerrard. All of a sudden the squad seems paper thin.
DeleteLucas and Gerrard together are a disaster, really hope we don’t see them both start tomorrow.
DeleteI also hope Hendo is fit as he is so vital to our team’s engine room.
DeleteCan't help wonder what might have been if we'd kept hold of Jonjo Shelvey. I think he'd have offered much more than Lucas in our engine room. Hope either of the young lads at least make the bench, along with Suso.
DeleteKarl agree on Shelvey, playing very well for Swansea City, attacking and likes to go forward allot, more than what Lucas gives us, I think.
DeleteIt's interesting re his lack of patience with Shelvey against the patience he showed with Henderson.
DeleteHe was eulogising about Suso yesterday, let's hope that wasn't just the usual in getting him to sign a contract before selling him. Fatted calf so to speak! It terms of the squad looking thin I guess that's the risk you take with having so many attacking players with similar attributes with not much in the central areas.
All,
ReplyDeleteI was just wondering if I should go to the Dr for a check-up before the game tomorrow?
Mo
Blood pressure check is advisable with our defensive mishaps recently.
DeleteI just hope we get on the right track soon (starting tomorrow) or questions will start being asked.
ReplyDeleteFirst, when I look at us without Suarez we've lost, the drive and hunger and the direction. In the 1920s the New York Yankees used to have a battling line-up from hell which would devour anything in its path (including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig) and I was beginning to see Coutinho, Sterling, Suarez and Sturridge like that. They used to call that batting line-up Murderers' Row, someone said " Those fellows not only beat you but they tear your heart out. I wish the season was over."
I just thought last season all we needed was a powerhouse next to Henderson and we'd up there running things.
Second, without Suarez if we don't get it together and fail to qualify for the CPL questions will be asked as to whether it was a world class player which made all the difference and not Brendan's management...
u are totally right we are going to be struggling to stay with the leaders if we do not win 2morrow. I really believe Suso has a great chance of making a difference 2morrow.
DeleteI think so, when the team is playing well especially when we had LS doing the business it made BR life easier. But now he's gone BR got to do what he is paid to do, manga this football team and true colours will start to show just how important LS made an impact on us.
