Liverpool come from behind to beat Newcastle as Premiership dream finally slips away

We were up against it ever since the loss against Chelsea and the crushing blow of throwing away a three goal lead against Crystal Palace gave us very little room for manoeuvre in terms of putting Man City under any pressure.  Jordan Henderson returned for Lucas and Agger for Sakho.
Arriving at our last home game against Newcastle side who had lost their last 6 away games, the only way of exerting any anxiety on Man City was by coming out of the traps quickly and firing in an early goal.   That we started flat as if punch drunk and hung over from the Selhurst Park disintegration, caused a Newcastle side buoyed by the lack of intensity and holding us of easily behind a Chelsea like formation with Ameobi impressing leading the line was causing consternation all round Anfield.

In fact Ameobi should have done better heading straight at Mignolet on 8 minutes.  With apprehension and our inability to breakdown Newcastle’s defensive lines, the frustration began to build and even more so when Suarez stunning free-kick from out on the right was disallowed as the referee articulated he had not given the signal to take a quick free-kick.
Liverpool were made to pay for the lack of intensity when Gouffran sluiced past Gerrard to cross, Skrtel for fourth time this season put into the back of the net with a slice that Rory McIlroy would have been embarrassed by.  It was no more than Newcastle deserved having looking comfortable in possession and offered the goal threat up to that point.

Daniel Sturridge celeberates his winner
Newcastle had chances to put the game to bed with Liverpool putting up little more than token resistance and at times being out classed with Newcastle looking comfortable in possession.  That being said, Sturridge had a glorious opportunity to regain parity, heading wide from close range and one sensed that maybe this was not to be our day especially when the world’s fastest footballing sms messenger dedlfc sent through a text to say City had taken the lead.

Jon Flanagan was substituted on half-time with Cissokho coming on.  The second-half followed the same pattern as the first until Coutinho entered the fray on the hour for Allen with City now two-up, and Liverpool needing more urgency to their play.
It was one of the games where set pieces were the only way we were going to get back in this game and so it proved.  Steve Gerrard has he has so often this season whipped in a free-kick with pace which looked to be drifting out of play until Agger showing fantastic agility hooked the ball in from an impossible angle to bring the match back all-square.

Moments later from almost the same position Gerrard from his book of patented delivery again whipped in another free-kick to the far post which Sturridge poked home from close range.
With Newcastle seemingly irate from the decision to give the free-kick, Ameobi was sent-off for dissent.  Another superb Gerrard delivery found Agger unmarked in the area, but the Danish captain fluffed his lines heading wide.

Any hope Newcastle had in getting back in the game disappeared when substitute Dummett was unluckily sent off for a tackle which warranted a yellow rather than a red he was shown.
Poignantly, Liverpool ran the game out showing, even if was against nine men, that they had learned something from the lesson at Selhurst Park, but it had me thinking if only…

Man of the Match: Steven Gerrard, two devastating pieces of delivery.
Critical eye:  Liverpool showed great character in coming back after being outplayed and winning.  It would’ve been a complete let down had we finished third.

In reflection it’s a season of what could’ve and should’ve been and it’s bittersweet.  But coming from 7th to still fighting for the Premiership title, however tenuous, on the last day of the season is something to be extremely proud of.
Going forward, the next transfer window is critical to bolster the squad with quality additions to compete on an even footing with Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City and Man United at home and in Europe on our return to the Champions League.

Teams:
Liverpool: Mignolet, Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Flanagan (Cissokho – 45), Gerrard, Allen (Coutinho – 59), Henderson, Sterling, Sturridge (Lucas – 80), Suarez

Substitutes: Jones, Kolo Touré, Iago Aspas, Coutinho, Sakho, Cissokho, Lucas
Newcastle United: Krul, Debuchy, Haidara, Coloccini, Williamson, Taylor (de Jong – 73), Sissoko, Anita, Shola Ameobi, Tioté (Dummett – 82 sent off), Gouffran (Sammy Ameobi – 78)

Substitutes: Santon, Yanga-Mbiwa, de Jong, Elliot, Sammy Ameobi, Dummett, Satka
Referee: Philip Dowd

Attendance: 44,724

  1. WHU had 3 shots and none of them were on target. That says it all.

I think we learnt a valuable lesson against CP because event when Newcastle went down to 9 men we did not go out all gun blazing.

    NEXT SEASON.

    1. We were running our A - Team pretty much all season, at some point tiredness, energy was going to take over. Our target has been achieved reaching the champions league.

You can go back and reflect on what cost us the season, being up 2-1 against Everton, ending 3-3. Man City game giving away a soft goal away from Alvaro.

Toure, pass across our own goal, while we were leading through Danial Sturidge goal. Gerrard slip against Chelsea leading Ba to run a score.

To be three goal up and 11 minuets to play, and Crystal Palace bringing it back to 3-3 (Shocking)

Winning the Premiership is not just about scoring goals, its a flair of balance, and one of them is simple Defending, and having a leader at the back. The fact is our defensive fragile cost us the season. I think we have achieved much positives, and we need to build on this now and stay to compete every season until we win the Dam thing! I do not want to see another season with out Champions league or sitting below third position.

    2. I don't see any point reflecting on Everton or WBA etc. We needed a draw against Chelsea at home and that for me is where we lost it, because until that point it was in our own hands.

What Brendan and his management team need to do now as he readily admits is concentrate on buying players who are starters not covering for the first XI. It's not just about our central defenders we need a more rubust midfield. Said this way back in the season, we can't have people running through our midfield without a tackle. Sometimes one crunching tackle can change the mood particularly when your struggling.

We lost by two points not thirty, admittedly which makes it harder to take, but there is something there to work with and given we have the Champions League games and the home cups we're probably looking at a minimum of ten extra games next season he needs to bring at least 5 new players. Players like Lucas have served the club admirably, but either he leaves or becomes a squad player because quite frankly he's not dynamic enough and his injuries look as if they've taken their toll. The fact that we couldn't muster a centre-midfielder to put on the bench against Palace says a lot.

Like to see Andre Wisdom brought back next season as a back up centre-half, but as Karl said yesterday it's highly unlikely. Hopefully Martin Kelly finally gets into together, but I have noticed that he hasn't been available for the reserves and he is almost 24. If we do get Lallana I can't see where Suso fits in unless he plays on the right where he's played for most of this season and it would be nice to see him back.

    3. Our defence is an area where we need investment. MS has done a great job but he needs to up his game (4 OGs to him) also, I am not a great fan of GJ but I think it time for him to move and JF to take over from him and MK as back up and hopefully JE would be back at left back.

    4. I was hearing on the radio, a fan rang in to make some after game comments and what needs to improve. Again its boiled down to our defenders.

Our new style of playing attacking football, we need 2 or three defenders who can take the ball out of the defence area, skilful, quality, keep the ball, which allows the midfield to push up, with confidence knowing the ball is under control from the back, not just running up and down the flanks and doing nothing at the end, its not out style anymore.

    5. I think we need two new fullbacks because although Flanno has been great this season if we are serious about pushing on we need more of an attacking threat delivered from full back and Glen Johnsons time is clearly up.

We need a right sided defender because Skrtel’s errors are of a frequency that suggests carelessness and a lack of concentration, he should be back up, not a regular starter next season.

We need another Henderson, his three game suspensions showed that the dynamism goes out of our midfield when he’s not available.

We need another defensive midfielder, Stevie is 33 and although it pains me to say it I think Lucas is spent.

We need a left sided attacker

We need another decent goal keeper to provide real competition for Mignolet, I’d like us to stick a bid in for David Marshall of Cardiff, he had a great season and might not be too expensive.

If we can tick thise boxes I think we’ll be in with a really good shout again next season.

    6. I think BR has noted the naivety of the Chelsea game and the lack of Grit in the Crystal Palace game.

We need comfortable and Assured defenders - Sahko is too robotic for me, and Skrtel is too accident prone.

Johnson brilliant going forward, culpable for Crystal Palace second goal, as he should have taken out Bollaise at the half way line. (Agger is the only defender we have for the moment but contractual disputes has meant the bench)

Caulker and Ashley Williams are muted as recruits... I would welcome them.

Vorm as back up or possible replacement for our present goalie is also welcome.

LLalana, Suso, Diame Gerrard, Henderson and Allen now that that is a midfield for a go at the title.

As Gerrard said - 2014 - 2015 We go again.

    1. I’ve read 60 million plus sales in the papers but I don’t think anyone really has a clue. You would expect FSG to make the necessary funds available.

    2. There should be money in the coffers because we earnt more than any other club when the Premiership and TV revenue is factored in (£99 million) for 2013-14. City earned £98 million.

You get extra money for the X-Factor of TV lure.

      Delete
    3. Ah, you get more money for letting more goals in? LoL....

    4. We had a great season and way beyond my wildest dreams, so congrats to BR and the lads - although we threw it away. I wouldn't expect our spending to exceed £60m as we're likely to remain cautious. If we've already committed £20m for Lulana, it doesn't leave much to spend on more than a couple of players although someone pointed out that we do have a few players that could perhaps fetch up to £30m.

  3. So we are moving in for Lallana... here we go!

    1. I like the fact we have started early, if sources suggest Man U have made a bid for £27 Million, it be interesting to see what we have offered, otherwise it be just a wait of time.

    2. 27 mill for Shaw. Personally, I think Shaw will end up further up the field like Gareth Bale.

Was reading over the weekend that Liverpool want to offer Southampton Alberto and Enrique.

    3. Would be surprised if they agreed to take a player that has been injured most of the season – i.e Enrique, also heard that despite not playing him as much as we had initially hoped Rodgers rates Alberto and may send him on loan next season rather than sell him.

    4. While they'll give him money he'll need to balance the books as JW & co are not suddenly going to change their philosophy in interms of finance.

    1. and Steven Caulker too.

    2. Steven Caulker is not a top quality defender – I was speaking to my best mate (Spurs fan) at the weekend about Caulker and he said whilst Caulker was at Spurs he was “distinctively average”.

    3. Liverpool Echo reporting that Southampton would want 25 mil for Lallana, he’s good but is he worth that kind of money?

      Delete
    4. We would want at 25 goals from him per season.

      Delete
    5. Go out into the wider world or European markets and 25 million pounds gets you a hell of a lot of footballer, it’s that English premium that adds about 5 million on to the reasonable value of most good English players.

      Delete
    6. As I said a while back Bournemouth are entitled to 25 per cent of any sell on fee and the fact that Southampton are £27 million in debt (the Shaw fee) means they'll push hard for extra dosh.

    7. Baz, They are becoming a very rare breed.

    8. obviously he's price tag goes up a bit being an English player, for an attacking midfield, 25 may not be a realistic target!, but would like to think so, I don't think we should pay more than £25M.

      Delete
    9. That’s a lot to ask from an attacking midfielder !!!

He is not exactly a Yaya Toure – he is a very exciting talent but 25 goals may be a step too far.

  6. Five players in the World Cup squad in Gerrard, Johnson, Henderson, Sterling and Sturridge and Flanagan highlights first, just what a season we've had and second that we are the only team in the top seven who has so many English players in its starting line-up and proves that they can adapt to a style of play which is normally seen as "foreign" to the usual kick and rush.

    1. Hopefully Coates will do something stunning and shake up LFC into giving him a game or two. Not a bench warmer.

    2. There is a lot of surprise that he's been chosen in the Uruguayan provisional World Cup squad because he's played so few games since he arrived back at Nacional.

He was saying that although he'd been in touch with Liverpool he has no idea what the future holds as the situation is complicated.
