Former Liverpool striker Andy Carroll added spice to what we
knew would be a difficult game when he claimed in the week preceding the game
that “I never really got the chance and was told to leave. That’s why I’m here.”
With the ‘Big man’ in that mind-set Liverpool supporters
were all wondering whether we’d be on the end of a backlash and with Stewart
Downing also lining up against his old club, supporters were questioning
whether we should make changes to the team to subdue the physical threat.
Should we start with Coutinho and Sterling or start with
just one? Should Lucas come in for
Gerrard with the threat of a two match ban hanging over him? Should Sakho come
in for Agger to help contain West Ham’s long ball game? Brendan Rodgers never had to make that call
as Agger picked up a “small knock” in his words, although he ought to be in contention
for the home game against Manchester City.
West Ham set out to make it difficult leavving very little
space for us to work in midfield and a defence well marshalled restricting
Liverpool to long-range efforts with Suarez and Sturridge working hard, but
finding it difficult to extricate themselves from the unwarranted attentions of
the West Ham markers.
Early on, Suarez saw his 25 yard free-kick drift just over
and then produce a moment of impudence when cutting in from the left after
collecting Coutinho’s throw-in, his speed of thought was so instinctive and
sharp that his chip left West Ham keeper floundering as it came back off the
bar. Suarez then expertly found his
striker partner Sturridge, who uncharacteristic rushed his shot to fire over.
Just as it seemed we would have to gather ourselves at
half-time and formulate a different plan of action, Steven Gerrard unfurled a spectacular
50 yard ball with such incision, that it crept inside the full-back to Suarez,
who deftly flicked the ball inside James Tomkins who handled to stop Suarez
going in on goal. Gerrard displayed all
the calmness of his 33 plus years expertly Adrián the wrong way.
Liverpool’s celebrations were sawn off in mid-flow with
Anthony Taylor deciding that it was his time to get himself in the spotlight
with a ridiculous decision. Carroll
blatantly knocked the ball out of Mignolet grasp with his hand after connecting
with his face allowing Demel to stab home.
The Assistant referee Stuart Burt having flagged, consulted with referee
Taylor who overruled Burt to award the goal.
Steven Gerrard slots home the winner |
The decision was staggering in its competence and something which we have suffered with in big games the season and in a game which at times felt like a war of attrition could have been very costly to our title ambitions.
Brendan Rodgers made his move at half-time bringing on Lucas
to replace Coutinho who struggled with the lack of space afforded him. The substitution gave us the initiative we
were craving for with the combative Lucas adding a more steely presence and
simplicity with the ball, allowing Sterling to provide more incision into the
Liverpool attacks playing behind the front-two.
Even so, Carroll who resembled a striker from a bygone age
came close to putting West Ham ahead when he rose majestically above Glen
Johnson to head against the bar.
Liverpool fans celebrate in the London's Ruse Pub in London's
With Lucas now attuned Liverpool were controlling the game,
pinning West Ham back for long periods with the home team’s regimented
formation keeping us at bay. Lucas, then
unveiled an exquisite short pass inside the full-back to the raiding Flangan who
was brought down by Adrián in his follow through, which seemed somewhat
harsh.
Steven Gerrard strode up to put the penalty away, his 13th
of a prolific season, playing in his much heralded holding “quarterback”
role.
Suarez almost put the game to bed when with the ball coming
across him, in an unorthodox manner of a genius, contorted his body so as to
curl the ball with the outside of his boot and against the bar.
West Ham had a modicum of pressure during the final throes,
but it was Liverpool who looked the more threatening with Raheem Sterling’s run
and shot which needed to palmed away by Adrián late on.
Man of the Match: Steven Gerrard – Led his team imperiously and
his stunning pass which set up the first goal was a thing of beauty. He stepped up once again for the penalties and
calmed the nerves of those around him displaying an indomitable spirit which he
seems to have taken forward since the retirement of Jamie Carragher and is
leading his team into battles (in conjunction with his manager) showing they
have learnt different ways to the win.
Mamadou Sakho in his first full game back since injury was
imperious. The threat of a fully wound
up Andy Carroll should not be played down and he and Skrtel gave as good as
they got with the ex-Liverpool man often picking himself off the ground. More impressive though was his calmness
bringing the ball out of defensive and his short and incisive passing.
Luis Suarez – Two flashes of genius and a starring role in
gaining the first penalty says it all about a player who deploys a never say
die attitude week in week out. While he
may not have been allowed to have his usual brilliant game, he left his mark on
the game two remarkable pieces of skill.
Critical eye: The
standard of the refereeing was appalling and could have been costly. It wasn’t the fact that Anthony Taylor made a
mistake, it was the fact that he overruled the Refereeing and assistant and in
all probability made the second penalty decision knowing that he’d made a huge
mistake earlier. We’ve hit by bad
refereeing decisions this season, but this was different because as the foul
was so blatant and he changed the mind of colleague with his intransigence.

We wone a very difficult game today. WHU had 11 players behind the ball when we had possesion. Couthino had a decent game but bringing on Lucas was an excellent idea.
ReplyDeleteSG did not pick a yellow card which is another good news.
Next stop City at ANFIELD.
Rodgers tactically perfect bringing on Lucas to gain a substance of control of the midfield, Gerrard passing was excellent throughout, Skrtel especially handled Carroll well, Sakho's distribution was also very impressive.
DeleteDespite a dodgy ref performance all that matters is that we won a tough game, our captain got through another game without a yellow card so can now play in the vital game vs Man City next weekend.
I am convinced that Sterling's pace and intelligent movement will help us beat City next weekend.
We need the SAS's clinical finishing touch to return next week
Still in pole position.
DeleteGood result for us, despite poor refereeing again. Seemed as if he was annoyed that the linesman questioned his judgement. We defended really well, with Carroll having to result to the handbag stuff. Clearly there’s no love lost between him and the club. From what Carra has been saying, he couldn’t handle playing 3 games a week and in training kept demanding that the ball was passed to him from the half way line. He’s at the right club, unless he fancies a run at Aintreee! I didn’t really notice Sakho’s distribution beyond two yard passes but I’ll take your word for it.
DeleteTo be strictly honest, this was the game I feared most. As far as I am concern, Andy is not a technical player, he just bullied defenders with his height nothing more.
DeleteI repeat again we defended well with Skrtel & Sakho doing a sterling (pardon the pun!!) job!!! LOL
DeleteWeekend started well as I went to Barclays in Tottenham Court Rd, the personal banker turn to be a life long Liverpool fan, who was regailing me which his trips to Anfield back in the eighties on the smoked filled carriages.
DeleteExcellent and hard fought victory. We gave no quarter and didn't panic once the early goal didn't arrive. Watching Andy Carroll must have taken those who watched football in the fifties back to watching Nat Lofthouse, except he was 1 in 2 man. He offered very little barring aggression and found myself happy that he left the club, although I don't know if it's selective memory, but he seemed to offer a little more for us!?!
Coversing with Luke during and after the game we were impressed with Sakho's distribution (short passing) and taking the ball out of defence with his little shuttle runs. Stevie was Stevie, when we needed a cool head he was on the scene and the pass for the first goal was of surgeon general calibre (eye of a needle). Lucas pass inside the fullback for second penalty was not too disimilar to Henderson's in the Cardiff game.
As for the referee, he should have sent off the defender for the first penalty as Suarez would've been clean through, let alone bungling the Mignolet mauling! But, then again he gave us the penalty against Stoke when Sterling went over.
Another 2 goals and we still have the highest goals per game ratio in the league since the war (around 2.6).
Do refs have to to spec savers?
DeleteI did not get to see the game, but seemed like a tough game, but we pulled it through.
Deleteall that talk about SG last week, we need him more than anything now in the remaining games, all our games are vital now if we are going for the DREAM!
I see the game on LFCTV.
That was a testing encounter and no mistake. Credit to West Ham, they moved it around very well especially in the first half. The introduction of Lucas gave us more control ahead of their defence and greater defensive stability and a better attacking platform simultaneously.
DeleteThe lads on The Anfield Wrap podcast made a great point that Liverpool came out after half time and said “Alright, we’re going to completely change how this game is going to be played and you’s aren’t going to like it” and that is exactly what we did, it’s encouraging that we can adopt different formations so effectively mid game when required. We were much the better side in the second 45 and we were worthy winners in the end. Initially I didn’t think that the Flanno pen should have been given but if you look at the replay their keeper takes a swipe at Flanno’s leg after getting a slight touch on the ball.
Sakho looked good in defence, but Sturridge had another off day following an out of form display against Tottenham, having said that I’d keep him in against City because it’s his ex-club and his pace will come in handy on the break. This Sunday is going to be absolutely mental, can’t wait. Is anyone going to the game? The place will be bouncing!
Flano's pen. I think it was a case of ball to hand rather than hand to ball and as Barry mentioned there was a follow through to Flano's leg. Any way it's over now.
DeleteWe have Premiership Cup final on Sunday and so shall it be played.
DeleteListened to anfield wrap myself and thought stuff about sterling's best position going forward possibly being centrally at the apex of the midfield quite interesting...can see the argument for that as though he is fast, not sure if he has type of pace that can repeatly burn a full back, rather he seems more effective at getting the ball in tight spaces and choosing when to burst between two unsuspecting players. Think his touch, awareness and decision making has been first rate recently and can see him becoming an iniesta type player for us, always comfortable taking ball in tight spaces and able to wriggle away for players. Two great examples of that against west ham - when he played great ball over the top for sturridge and when he played suarez in near the end....
DeleteBarry, pretty harsh to be even considering dropping sturridge! He's gone two games without a goal so is bound to score at the weekend. Think if he isn't having his best game is vital as his pace stretches teams and preoccupies their defence....
Could see argument for bringing lucas in instead of coutihno to try and deal with silva....
Yeah, I’d defo keep Sturridge in the team, he’s earned a bit of patience and can make things happen at any moment even if he has been having a quiet game. Just saying that he’s been a bit anonymous / wastful in the last two games, hopefully he’s been saving it up for City.
DeleteIf we bring Lucas in, it might make us a little too defensive. Whats really good is that you could see by the way Kompany talked about us on LFC, they seem quite worried. They expect to be in for a hell of a game. If Coutinho doesn’t play, I’d probably bring in Joe if he’s fit. The difficulty with Silva is that he’s roaming all over the place so would be difficult to man mark. We just have to leave it to players in the areas that he occupies, to do the business. Also, its not just him that we would need to keep tabs on, Nasri, Kolo Bears’ brother and others too. We just have to play our game.
DeleteRegarding Sturridge, it would be nuts to drop him. He’s a class act and all players, even Suarez, have their dips but I’m sure he’ll be revved up come Sunday. I think Sterling was originally a striker or forward rather than a natural winger. But he can certainly play in both roles and really improving defensively. Whats good about when he (and Countinho) run with the ball centrally, it makes their players commit themselves leaving gaps for us to occupy.
I agree with you there Livi, If we play three in midfield I’d go Hendo, Gerrard, Allen to start with. I don’t think we’ll go with the diamond this time becasue City are really strong in Central midfield and they have good attacking fullbacks. I think we’ll start 4-3-3 with the SASAS ahead of Hendo, Gerrard and Allen (if fit).
DeleteI am one of those that believe that just his presence will worry City's defence and that will allow other players to move in.
DeleteAye I know, only messing. I just think he's could be guilty of been judged against his own ridiculously high standards. I personally think suarez is bit off the boil at the min by his own stellar standards, despite his two outrageous chips on sunday....Reckon he's due a free-kick flying in so hopefully that will also happen along with sturridge's overdue goal ;-)
DeleteMan City also have to go to Crystal Palace and Everton so I do not see our game as a title decider just yet.
DeleteWhen we win the pressure will be turned up on them.
What impresses me about Sterling is his intelligent use of the ball. I can think of many players (Lennon for one), who would have struggled to pick out Suarez with that little floated ball against Spurs (one of them plays for Spurs). He also holds the ball up extremely well these days - remember Brendan remarking that he'd developed tremendous upper body strength and he also works back to cover the full-backs.
DeleteIf I was going to go for an extra midfielder for Coutinho I'd go for Allen, but the difference for us now is that we have a tad more depth. When we last played City in December we didn't have Gerrard or Sturridge, now we have a few more players to change things up as Lucas did on Sunday. Baz's comments about a different mindset chimes with Gerrard's comment about West Ham asking them to park the team coach a mile down the road and walk in, ensuring the changing room was excessively hot, not watering the grass for a good while to make sure it would hinder our passing game and for good measure throwing 70 yard balls in the box at every opportunity which only strengthened our mentality and resolve.
As for Sturridge he's looked a little listless over the last two games and one wonders whether not having any pre-season training over the last two seasons is beginning to catch up with with him?
I used to hate it when Utd were playing most of their games on Sunday because they know precisely what they need to do. I thought that was unfair and give them an advantage. Would you believe it but we are now playing most of our games on Sunday and we now have the advantage.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you guys(all) think?
Just taking it each game one at a time – the biggest test of our credentials is on Sunday but I am very confident of creating a lot of chances versus City.
DeleteThe big question is will we convert them on the day ???
I am of the view that Sturridge and Suarez should change their boots. The ones they used at WH were not clinical. One Chelsea fan here is ready to put his money on the bet that Chelsea will certainly beat us at Anfield, an idea I find absolutely not well supported with their travelling statistic. If they did not brush aside Crystal Palace, Aston Villa etc, I wonder what inform is confident.
DeleteDid Suarez wear the boots that were made with knitting needles?
DeleteDon’t know why he decided to change his boots halfway through the season !!! The new boots are just unlucky !!!
DeleteForget the sponsorship money for wearing knitted boots we have a title to win here !!!
Great for us. Five solid days to prepare for the next game and Man City in this case would have had 6 days because they played on Saturday and could have started their preparation from yesterday. I am sure we will agree that the second Pen was not a pen. But the ref was possibly trying his level best to atone for his original sin.
DeleteThe Manchester born ref tried his best to help out Man City!!!
DeleteAccording to BR it was a pen. The reason why some feel that the ref got it right is because when the keeper connected with the ball, he also got Flanagan’s trailing leg – although he seemed to on his way down anyway. When the keeper saved it his hand was on top of the ball rather than taking it from the side, which meant that his hand was raised.
DeleteDoesn’t matter at all anymore we won and are one step closer to what we all want.
DeleteOne game at a time.
Did any of you see Kolo Bear’s header back and have your heart in your mouth like I did – all I thought when the ball was looping back towards Migs was not again !!! Please Nooooooo !!!! LOL
ReplyDeleteI am not 100% sure about our keeper.
DeleteHow many games do you need to play to get a league winners medal?
ReplyDelete10 appearances including sub appearances.
DeleteIf we win the League, some players like Aspas, Koo and so on will probably get a medal. I don't really care as long as we win the dam thing.
DeleteLuis Alberto is on 9 appearances, Enrique misses out on 8 appearances – all the other main players in the squad will get a winners medal if and when we get across the line as champions.
DeleteSteady on... let's just concentrate on Man City and not het ahead of ourselves!
DeleteI see with we are being linked with Micah Richards who has finally put his head above the parapit and decided to leave City at the end of the season.
ReplyDeleteWithout getting rid of some of our right backs, I don’t think he’ll be an option for us. I could see him going to Arsenal.
DeleteReal Madrid v Bayern Munich so you can guess the other one!
ReplyDeleteAthleti with a really dodgy 2nd keeper versus the Chavs, It was bound to happen, would love to see an Athletico Vs Real final, that would be bonkers.
DeleteIago Aspas
ReplyDelete"My colleagues are playing great [Suarez and Sturridge] but I think the boss could give more minutes to the substitutes, especially when we are winning 3-0," he is quoted as saying by the IBTimes.
"We are playing three games a week and sometimes I don't understand that the strikers play the three games the entire 90 minutes when there are other players.
"I don't understand why he [Rodgers] made so few changes. For example, when we are winning 5-0 against Tottenham you think 'make a change' because he still has the option to make three changes."
Aspas also revealed he feels he is being played out of position when he is given a chance, and his comments could be interpreted as an attempt to engineer a summer move away from Anfield.
He added: "I started the preseason very well, playing as a number nine, but during the season I began to play as a playmaker, where I don't feel comfortable. I think that is what has stopped me showing my potential."
He’ll be off in the Summer, boo hoo.
Deletemove on than!!
DeleteI have no time for Aspas – he is a waste of space!!!
DeleteHe might not actually be that bad a number 9 (he had a good rep at Celta Vigo) but he’s never going to get past Suarez and Sturridge and Brendan obviously hasn’t seen enough from him in training to justify sticking him on as a late sub so it’ll be best for all concerned when he moves on. Swansea were after him at Christmas so maybe they’ll come back in for him, Spanish teams will be interested too, you never know we might even get our money back for once.
DeleteNo no, he will play as much games as he likes once we beat Man City and Chelsea and our Champion status is confirmed. He can play in Crystal Palace game in order beef up his valuation before he is offloaded in the summer.
DeleteHe can not play in no more games until we are 4 points clear with a game to go.
DeleteWell Newcastle game then. That will be his farewell.
DeleteBiffa Aspas is certainly a “false” number 9! I can understand the questions raised though – 5-0 up and he still can’t get a couple of minutes on the pitch.
DeleteOur lack of midweek European competition meant Rodgers has got away with it to some extent with the need to rotate players and seemed to make up his mind pretty quick that Aspas and Luis Alberto had nothing much to offer. He’ll need to spend more wisely this summer because CL football alongside the premier league will be a sterner test for the squad,
DeleteMore words of wisdom (what else would I expect) – totally agree.
DeleteIn total agreement.
DeleteI think the lack of game time for Aspas and Alberto is definitely in part Rodgers’ way of sending a message to the transfer committee. I think those two were players fancied by the committee rather than by Rodgers himself and he’s making it clear that only his targets will get game. The same goes for Tiago Ilori, 7 mil and not one senior appearance, not even a sub appearance in the cap one cup? Nobody makes that signing then gives the fella no game time unless they are unhappy with the transfer.
DeleteIt will be a different next season as we would be playing in mid week games.
DeleteNah I don’t see it, even when we were in 2 cup competitions and the league, those three never got a sniff, when we were playing 5 games in 14 days over Christmas he didn’t give them a minute on the pitch in fact when Joe Allen went off injured against Chelsea on 29th Dec he brought on Brad Smith and left Alberto on the bench. You can’t tell me there isn’t some sort of agenda behind that.
DeleteI thought that the manager had input into the transfer committee? I didn’t think it was like the Spurs model where players are just handed to the manager to coach?
DeleteWhat I meant was that he will have to use more players next season as we would playing hopefully, a lot more games.
DeleteYeah, sure we’ll need a bigger squad, that’s a given.
DeleteHe has input but he doesn’t always get the players he wants, last year Rodgers wanted Mikhtarian, Costa, Willian but got none of them. He was very public in his disappointment of not signing Willian in particular saying that we’d missed out on a player that he thought would have been “perfect for us”. I’ve heard stories in the press that at Christmas Rodgers was lobbying for more defensive recruits but the transfer committee and Ian Ayre were more interested in pursuing attacking players. There is definitely a certain amount of disharmony around targets and recruitment strategy. Hopefully we can sort it out this Summer.
I think Baz is right in terms of his disquiet after those transfers in addition to some of those that ended up at Spurs, but in my opinion Aspas et al may not have been the players on the first rung of his transfer hit list, but they are Rodgers type players. Illori had a big reputation and Rodgers openly wanted him (watched him play a few times) and also while he may not have helped himself, Rodgers has always rated Victor Moses, but since the turn of the year he hasn’t had a sniff either. He knows his best players and he’s just stuck to those he believes will do the job.
DeleteWe have been fortunate with injuries and the lack of European and even FA and Capital One games, but those teams we are competing against for the Premiership are also built to withstand the rigours of multiple competition. There are very few teams in the League who could afford to have James Milner as a bit part player, not even play Jack Rodwell and Micah Richards when his fit, leave out Ashley Cole altogether and give Oscar a break in mid-season. It’s all swings and roundabouts.
I agree that there seems to be some friction and that it seems like Rodgers is making a point...think Illori still may have part to play and Rodgers said recently that alberto still has a future but it is very strange how little he has played, especially as he has some glimpses of class when he has played....
DeleteThe more I think about it sunday more i reckon he'll go all out with coutinho and sterling and try and blitz them in the opening half...
We might be guilty of reading too much into the situation, Rodgers is probably as surprised as anyone how well the season has gone. No one would have expected Flanagan to claim a full back role as his own, Sterling has found new levels, Gerrard excelling in a new role, while Suarez and Sturridge seem intent on breaking all premier league goal scoring records. The team picks itself with the manager tailoring tactics as required, it’s a brave man who tinkers with a winning team.
DeleteIf Stevie gets booked on Sunday does he still miss two games?
ReplyDeleteOver to you Opta Douglas!
DeleteYes – after the game at the weekend – the ban is lifted until the end of the season.
DeleteOh dear, it could be spicy in that midfield on Sunday, he’ll have a few decent players buzzing around him, he’d better time those tackles.
DeleteThanks Dave
Hopefully he won't get booked, but if he does he's taken us the mountain and he'll just have to join up with us later in our attempt on the summit.
Delete
