Is the top four a pipe dream? .

By Roger Bailey

Twenty-three points from 11 games and second in the Premiership.  More than we could have imagined at the start of the season.  Of the 2 loses we’ve suffered, I was more disappointed with the Arsenal loss because the formation and the personnel chosen in key positions made the midfield battle an uphill struggle from the start, whereas Southampton as they’ve gone on to prove are a thoroughly good side and deserved their victory.

The season so far lacks a dominant force or at least one that has shown it’s head above the parapet.  Man City have at times bared their teeth as with their demolition of Man United, but have since faltered to the make weights in the League away from home.  And frailties were shown up in the recent loss to Man United.

No question, Liverpool have the dominant striker in the Premiership in Suarez, already the League’s leading scorer after missing five games and with Daniel Sturridge in tandem we have a the strong possibility of mounting a decent challenge for a Champions League place and to do this as the manager freely admits the club needs to strengthen in January.

When supporters hear their manager admitting the team needs strengthening, instantaneously we think big money signings.  Unless lightening strikes twice (re Suarez), we are unlikely to make a big money signing in January, because as we all know the window tends not to throw up any real big names and should the remote possibility arise, with so many teams fighting for the top positions, those with spending power will want to make sure that the perceived closing of the gap stays wide open, particularly with the revenue stream likely to increase in the future with BT having made their play to take over the Champions League coverage and the markets in the US, Canada and the Caribbean about to renegotiate their deals with could quadruple club revenues.

I really believe that this has to be the season because failure to qualify will see us loose Suarez.  But, even more than that UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations are already looking like a misnomer with Paris St-Germain announcing an astonishing £200 million a year in a four year sponsorship deal with Qatar Tourism Authority, which the Telegraph reports is unbelievably backdated to 2012 which will be incrementally increased year on year to reach the said figure by 2016.  How do we compete after this season when both Manchester United and City have multi-million pound deals over the next ten years and will have to dig deep to keep PSG at bay let alone in overtake mode?

If we get to January still in contention, and there is no reason why we can’t, Brendan Rodgers deserves the trust and support of the Anfield faithful having brought in the resounding successes of Coutinho and Sturridge to what was I remember as many a raised eyebrow, to buy in enough quality to fight shoulder to shoulder with our competitors in the second half of the season.

Brendan Rodgers deserves time and our trust in the next transfer window
It would be lovely to think that we could buy a top class player, but we are not living in the rarefied atmosphere of the Manchester clubs and Chelsea, but what we do have at the moment is a truly world class player at the peak of his powers and that’s why if we can be in with a shout in January we’ll have something to bait the fish with.

Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique’s return couldn’t have come soon enough, but we still need a quality wide man and a ball playing midfield enforcer.  Hopefully, our scouts already have this in hand and the board strikes early in the window with the likes of Spurs hovering around to pilfer from our hard work.

The Liverpool back four is as good any in the League with Daniel Agger back in the fold, but this team cries out for at top class midfield to knit the team together. If Arsenal had the Liverpool forward line, we'd already be talking about the next Premiership champions.  If Liverpool had the Arsenal midfield, we'd be Champions, but if's doesn't get us there.

Will he provide Liverpool with the quality it needs for success
Additional components will create competition in the central  areas and enable Rodgers to use his captain as more of a strategic weapon. The last few weeks have shown a couple of injuries can put us on the back foot as a one dimentonal machine because of the lack of depth.

We maybe punching above our weight, but Sugar Ray Leonard moved up from Welterweight to Light Heavyweight, and if we do get in that quality we can still dream because this may well be the only season, for some time, where a club breaking into the ‘big four’ will be able to shout “I shook up the world” as Muhammed Ali once said.

  1. Nice one.

We have some tough games around Xmas time (Chelsea and City) but they are winnable games, with the right personnel in the right place.

    1. Listen if we are up there come the new year, top players won't think twice about joining up with us. I believe we should believe in our team this season and focus on winning the whole shebang. This is our best chance in years and years. Decades !

    2. An accurate and measured assessment of Liverpool's ambitions.

I want to think that Messrs Henry and Friends would help Liverpool up for the next push to conservatively, a fourth place or in dream land the title...

Oh well what do I know eh.

    3. A excellent summery from all angles

4th place or wining the title race is a dream for all. Putting this dream to reality is probably far from reaching the dream yet, but for now, If we don't loose Suarez, than I do believe 4th place is possible, consistency is the key and hunger, desire on the pitch.

BR has done well turning some players around, Daniel Sturidge for one, and purchase of Coutinho. But like the blogs says, its strengthening, instantaneously which I think need to be done season in and out. The only way to do this is buying quality players and not players to fill the gaps. Owners need to fund the money and BR needs to bring in the right, quality of players. On the day we can shoulder to shoulder competitively against each other terams, but we need a few who can strike lighting at the centre of the pitch.

    4. A thought provoking blog and I agree with much of it. We have an excellent strike force and I'm happy with the defence when deploying a flat back four. I think we have adequate cover there too.

Where I tend to agree is in that we need something in midfield, including the flanks, to link everyone together and we need the strength in depth to be able to rest players. Hopefully Sturridge can rest tomorrow night. I don't think we can just blindly trust Brendan. He's signings of Coutinho and Sturridge in last winters' window must again be matched. I think there will be a better pool of players available because there'll be those desperate to go to the World Cup. A top four finish would be fab beyond belief but we always seem just one injury away from being able to maintain our standards.

    5. Top four is now no longer a pipe dream, it is a distinct possibility especially if Suarez and Sturridge stay fit.

The back four will now have to be the standard way of playing rather than the three at the back as I believe it would be more flexible.

We desperately need to look out for a back up striker for the SAS as Aspas is not of the required standard.

Thanks again to Mr Bailey for his thought provoking blog

  2. All,

Read in the Metro a couple of days ago that we will buy W Hughes of Derby?

    1. We need to buy him but then send him back to Derby on loan for the rest of the season.

He will not play any games for us this season so it would be more beneficial to us if he plays regular football with Derby for the rest of this season rather than sitting watching football from the stands or the bench.

    2. Vic may see the potential more than me but I don’t see the big commotion about this guy.

    3. well is he going to rattle the cadge, if you know what I mean, in November 2012, he was linked to moves to Arsenal, us and Man city, so why is he so good for us, and know one else going for him.

    4. Will Hughes is a very gifted player. As I mate of mine, a lifelong Derby fan said to me, he's not the Steven Gerrard type player we are eventually looking for, he's a more of cultured footballer, your Liam Brady than the explosive midfield player. If he turns out to be anything like Brady he'd be well worth a punt.

  3. And the news today that Brendan Rodgers says defender Jose Enrique will require surgery on a long-term knee injury.

    Not good news I'm afraid.

    1. Yap heard that, also LS played the full 90 minutes last night, despite his side being 5-0, hope he's legs are ready for Saturday!

    2. Yeah, that’s really bad news and quite critical to the way we play.

      Delete
    3. Especially with a cumbersome centre-back playing as a left back as replacement - Cissokho

Totally ridiculous for Suarez to play 90 mins !!!

  4. Should've added that Brendan stated that we are not going for Hughes.

    1. Worst is that in yesterday's Metro mentioned that Real Madrid might make a bid for him in Jan.

    2. Whatever will be with Suarez – enjoy him while he is here – a fantastic player that deserves to play at the highest level.

If its with us that’s brilliant if not we can’t continue to complain forever.

    3. Well said David! About time we know people valued so much the pride of playing for their beloved country. No one said a word about Sakho who is yet to score for us but put 2 pass Ukraine to ensure the France passage to Brasil next year.

    4. He did very well to get those two goals he had predicted before the game that he would get a goal his team-mates laughed at him so he went and got a second one just to shut them up !!! LOL

New nickname for him Sakhominator !!!!

    5. well, despite what LS says, and seems happy for playing for us, coming Jan, a few doors be knocking for him for sure!

if he goes - we move on....

    6. Exactly Billy – we will survive a long time after the new SAS have terrorised defences up and down the country !!! LOL

    7. totally agree! no anger if he leaves..

  5. I can't see him leaving in Jan - he is happy on the pitch when playing and also showing his children at the ground. Of course, I could be wrong and also not knowing if anything have been said behind closed doors.

    1. And we get the right money for him, and use that money to strengthen the 1st team. I accept that if Real Madrid or Barca come in and are prepared to pay the asking price, if we are not offering champions league football, then I guess you can let them go. But not to any premiership club. One thing that BR did get right is when he said that if Gareth Bale is worth £xm, then Suarez would be worth more.

      Delete
    2. I am sure Gareth Bale will agree with that!!

      Delete
    3. Livi agree, on that, and defiantly NOT a premiership team, I think I will right a letter to Santa lol

  6. LFC could value Suarez at a £100M but he’s only worth that figure if someone is prepared to pay that amount for him. Madrid knew when making the deal for Bale Spurs had overinflated his value but were happy to continue as the players marketability for the Madrid brand was worth the initial investment. Nowadays is not just what you can do on the pitch but how you can be marketed off it that often sets the players value. If Suarez goes next summer I’m not sure everyone will be so pragmatic about his sale when we only get somewhere between £40-£50M.

    3. He is definitely worth more but will not go for anymore than £50m because as Livingstone says his market value must be poor unless he is the lead for the next Hannibal Lechter film !!! LOL

      Billy – Whose Mark ??

Is it a ghost?? A new member of the LFC email club that we don’t know about ?? Or just an imaginary friend of yours !!! LOL

    5. Was reading Steve Nicol believes a £100m offer could see Luis Suarez leave Liverpool next summer.

    6. If we get a 100m offer – we will gladly accept it – we would then be able to get the replacements to push us on further as a team.

  8. guys, do you remember the LFC documentary/film and BR mentioned 3 names in the envelope who will the team down?

any ideas, have the name come out of the hat, or is it after this season, or was it a load of Expecto Patronum!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Rodgers has now revealed he didn’t have any names in the envelope – it was all a ploy to get into the players heads that they need to try and stay on top of their games.

      Delete
  9. I would probably think the same as think Johnson usually offers a lot from the left and we may need to look at playing him their in enqique's absence so we don't lose too much in attacking terms as you would think Kelly/Flanagan or even Kolo at right back would offer more balance and thrust going forward than Flanagan at left back......Having said that you'd have to think that Flanagan has been better in training for Rodgers to speak so highly of him. Think it's sign of impressive character to of been out in the cold for so long and to of fought way back into the reckoning. Most comparable players would be playing for Tranmere or bury by now....not to say that won't ultimately be where Flanagan ends up but commendable that he's stuck at it and forced a second opportunity...

with this is mind it seems about time for a Friday team selection - be tempted to bring kolo or sakho back in to deal with physical threat of Lukaku. I could also even see potential value of bringing extra midfielder in perhaps Allen who was MOTM for wales other night and going back to 4-2-3-1 and leaving some real firepower in form of sturridge or coutinho on the bench

    Ming

    Kelly agger Kolo Johnson

    Lucas Gerrard
    Henderson Coutihno

    Sturridge Suarez

Bench - allen, sakho, toure, moses, sterling, jones

    1. Decent team selection – I feel that Coutinho does not influence us in the big games so may be tempted to play Joe Allen instead of him and hope for some magic from the SAS or our capt to win the game.

Would love to see Sakho vs Lukaku – proper battle of strongmen would feel that Sakho could hold his own vs him but Rodgers will go with Skrtel and you will see Skrtel either step up his game or for a third time in a row vs Lukaku cost us the game through not being able to handle him.

      Delete
    2. Good point about our difficulties in dealing with Lukaku in the previous two games. You would imagine that hasn't been lost of coaching team and hope they have come up with some special measures!

    3. I am fuming with Roy Hodgson you play Sturridge (who has not trained a whole training session) for England for 90 minutes and now he has a dead leg and is struggling to be fit for the Merseyside Derby !!!

      Thanks for nothing u plum!!!

Also blame Rodgers for not standing him ground and pulling the player out as it is only a friendly not a major competitive game.
