Mignolet saves penalty as Liverpool up and running

A year ago four of us trudged away from The Hawthorns already fully aware that we in for a long season.  It was almost the end of what had been a traumatic day after nearly being fried in the back of dedlfc’s car on one of the hottest days of the year, when hit by road works, dedlfc summarily announced on the motorway that the car’s air conditioning was on the blink!

Today with the start of the new season finally upon us one sensed the excitement was there as usual, but expectations was under-control given the relative purchases compared to those of the likes of Man City and especially Spurs and with Luis Suarez watching on with family in toe.

At the end of the game relief was the order of the day.  Our possession and chances may not have related to the goals we deserved and that Simon Mignolet fantastically saved us with a last minute penalty save, but there is no point being churlish, we our off the mark and sometimes reality is the best medicine.  Yes, the same problems remain, that of the defensive frailties against set pieces, a lack of a real combative edge in midfield, but on the flipside we created a plethora of chances and Daniel Sturride got off the mark by scoring the winning goal.

As is our way under Brendan Rodgers we set the tone of the match by controlling possession, but there was nothing of note until Stoke broke away and from a resultant Whelan corner Mignolet flapped and we were fortunate to see Huth’s volley crash against the bar.

Liverpool were stung into action with first, Sturridge having a headed goal chalked for straying just offside and then from a Gerrard corner a towering Toure header smashed against the bar with Daniel Sturridge blazing over from close range.

The magical Countinho always prompting and probing, found the marauding Enrique at the top of his run, the left-back played a superb one-two with Aspas, unluckily seeing his shot superbly smothered by Begovic. Another sumptuous move orchestrated by the young Brazilian, after Toure had ran the ball out of defence, saw Henderson on a typical run hit his shot straight at the imperious Stoke City goalkeeper.

It would take a stunning strike to beat the brilliant Bosnian and Daniel Sturridge provided it.  His 20 yard drive from a standing position with very little back lift ripped between Robert Huth’s legs leaving Begovic with no chance as it nestled in the corner of the net.

Sturridge provided another devasting strike

It was no more than Liverpool’s creativity and possession deserved, but Stoke were still dangerous and Mignolet pulled off a fine sprawling save from Walters snap shot.

The start of the second half was no different from the first as we were in full control, with Coutinho controlling the tempo of Liverpool’s attacks as if he and he alone was playing to the Bosa Nova sounds of Gilberto Gil.  He ghosted after the ball from just inside the Stoke half and searing into the area guided his shot just past the post.

He again sauntered in the area, cutting the ball back to Sturridge, whose miskick only managed to divert the ball into the path of the onrushing Henderson who saw his shot tipped around the post.  Enjoying a ten minute purple patch Coutinho found Sturridge with a slide-rule pass to him scoot away and see his shot pushed against the outside of the post by Begovic.  Gerrard’s resultant corner found the unmarked Aspas whose flicked header flashed past the upright.

The effervescent Aspas who showed up well for the ball all afternoon, linked up well with Henderson and found the ex-Sunderland midfielder bursting in the area only to see his goal bound shot pushed against the post by Stoke’s keeper.  Steven Gerrard’s powerful 35-yard free-kick was tipped over by Begovic and charistically he was again in the right place to block Glen Johnson as the right-black looked to score from close range.

Ex-Liverpool old boy Charlie Adam almost brought Stoke back on level-terms when he produced a stunning bit of skill to almost chip Mignolet from half-way, only for the new Liverpool keeper to scuttle back and flip the ball over the bar.

With Liverpool’s dominance not been converted into goals the possibility of a late smash ‘n’ grab was always possible and it came as no surprise when a minute from time Stoke were awarded a penalty as we again succumbed to a set piece.  Mignolet, has Pepe Reina, had done so often in his Liverpool career guessed the right way and brilliantly saved Jones follow-up shot to send the home fans home happy.

Man of The Match:  Philippe Coutinho – sent the tempo and has become the Liverpool conductor elect, taking over from Steven Gerrard.  The best moments stemmed from his mercurial feet, whether he was driving from deep or drifting in from the left he committed defenders or got them off balance before releasing devastating passes often licking up as in the end of last season with Sturridge and Enrique.

Aspas was impressive with a debut full of running and offered support to colleagues, with unselfish running in the channels and holding up the ball.  An excellent piece of link up play with Henderson also brought a goal and he himself almost got on the score sheet with an excellent flicked header across the goal.

Critcal Eye:  Pure and simple we have to finish sides off (26 shots, 1 goal) or else we leave ourselves open, as we almost found to our cost today, to late flourishes from the opposition.
But three points is three points.

Team: 22 Mignolet, 2 Johnson, 3 Enrique, 4 Toure, 5 Agger, 8 Gerrard, 9 Aspas (Sterling, 72 mins), 10 Coutinho, 14 Henderson, 21 Lucas, 15 Sturridge

Substitutes: 1 Jones, 47 Wisdom, 6 Alberto, 31 Sterling, 33 Ibe, 29 Borini

  1. Relief and job well done. I have good vibes about this season, early days I know.

How about that double save, crucial! It was great to be there.

    1. Really important to get a first win underway as quickly as possible, by any means. Encouraging opening performance given the number of chances we created but we should have scored at least 3. Now looking forward to seeing some quality additions to the team. I note that Skrtel and Coates didn't even make the bench!

    2. A good win on Saturday with plenty of chances which should have killed the game and a good save by the keeper but a bit of nerve at the beginning.

  2. I think defiantly an improvement of the team, short, quick, passing and pressing on the ball much more quickly and working harder as a team, then last year.
Aspas impressed me but Continuo was brilliant, hunger for the ball all time, passing, and taking the ball on, this boy can only get better.

Mignolet started nervously but was a HERO at the end of the game, great saves. However we let Stoke come into the game with couple of chances here and there just the same old finishing problem and this must change if we are to get anywhere this season, no point after the game looking at statistics of chances we missed which should have been in back of the net.

May factor we won and now to build on this, for the next game

  3. Fantastic start to the season we should have had the game wrapped up early in the first half with the amount of chances we created but the most important thing is that we won, we got a clean sheet and most importantly we got off to a winning start to our campaign for a change!!!

Major concerns are the set pieces we looked alarmingly nervous at every set piece and we can address that quickly by going for PSG defender Mamadou Sakho, the guy is a quality defender and is exceptionally cheap at approx £8m, Toure has started the season well but we just need that aerial presence that a player such as Sakho would give us.

The three advanced players Aspas, Coutinho and Sturridge all interchanged very well and looked very promising.

    Overall good win.

    2. Mignolet’s amazing double save made him an instant hero but his overall performance left a lot to be desired, he doesn’t look comfortable with the ball at his feet and he flapped at some crosses, hoping he can improve once the nerves settle down a bit. Pleased with us creatively, we could have dished out a hiding had Begovic not been playing a blinder. Villa next week will be a difficult game they looked sharp against Arsenal.

    2. Frustrating if true. We’re facing another poor summer transfer window, don’t get me wrong we’ve brought in some decent players but we haven’t strengthened like we needed to. Spurs squad looks light years ahead of hours at the minute, I reckon they’re nailed on for top 4 along with the Manc teams and Chelsea.

    3. A few weeks ago BR mentioned that he would be tapping into the transfer market to get some first teamers so I really hope this is just a blip!

    5. Remember FSG saying when they first bought the club, that we would compete in the market with the top teams in Europe. We can’t even compete with Tottenham, laughable. Can’t really blame our big players for wanting to leave when they see the lack of any real investment in the team. Net spend so far is a negaitive figure, don’t be surprised if it stays that way. Moan, moan, complain, complain.

      Delete
    6. You have every right to moan - this is making us look really incompetent in the transfer market.

    7. Not often I find myself disagreeing with you Barry but whilst I share your concerns from all I've read it looks like our interest in Willian was definitely genuine and club were prepared to pay £30 million plus for him but it's just a sad fact that spurs are currently a more attractive prospect than us for many players at the minute. They have finished ahead of us for last 3 or 4 seasons, are more likely to get CL football next year, are in Europe and are London based....and in case of willian AVB has wanted to sign him since he was Chelsea manager and also speaks the same language as him so that is bound to be more of a draw than old brenty Rodgers!

Will be gutted if he does go to spurs and lights the prem up but hopefully we will still strengthen before window closes.

I'd be feeling more pissed off if I was an arsenal fan and had missed on top targets by not being willing to pay the fees required and were no scrambling around the prem....

    1. All very true and rational Luke mate but it’s still a kick in the teeth, and an indication of just how far the lure of Liverpool F.C. has fallen when your three main transfer targets all turn you down in one Summer. Also, can’t help feeling that Ian Ayre might not be a great negotiator, he does come across as a proper tube. Just feel like all the pre-season optimism will be well and truly sucked out of the club if we can’t add some real quality this window.

      Delete
  7. yeah I agree with that all to be honest especially about lure of LFC, the years in the CL wilderness are really starting to hurt us. Also, whilst I do think our interest was genuine I also think club wanted it to be known that we were pursuing him, and that's a dangerous game as, one, it raises expectation and then prompts frustration when it doesn't materialise (as you point out below), and two it makes club look small time, which obviously has knock on effects when trying to recruit other high calibre players. Finally, it makes it hard to convince our next target that they're integral to our plans when they were clearly pretty far down our list of targets.....

Only mitigating factors are that aside from City and Spurs (who will in all likelihood still be losing by far their best player) the other big clubs have struggled to get big deals done this summer...but I suppose they haven't been turned down by the players as opposed to not having bids accepted...

  8. I sat there last night reading reports of how we'd agreed to his wages, but wanted to knock them down to £26 million, which gave Spurs an avenue to walk down. Every time we keep doing this and it allows others (namely Spurs to creep in). There's a joke going round that Tottenham have employed an intern whose job it is to watch out for potential Liverpool transfers... must be doing a helluva job!!!

I agree it's embarrassing and looks shoddy in the extreme. While it's great for Daniel Agger to make statements about staying with the club even if we fail to get Champions League football we need real quality to move on to the next stage and if it means you sometimes have to break the wage structure, so be it. Arsenal's vice-president stated she wishes never sold her shares because these guys are in it for the profits and it's beginning to feel like that with us. Twice in the space of weeks we've made to look amateurish in the transfer market, we send Ian Ayre overseas, we hear noices about being confident about negotiations only to come back with the tail between our legs and then end up with a cut price version.

You look across the park at Everton producing another gem in Barkley and you begin too wonder....

    1. Spurs Have Franco Baldini selling their club to players and conducting negotiations, we have Ian Ayre. That’s the difference. As you say Vic, every time we go into a negotiation we get beaten to the punch because we stall the deal, trying to knock a couple of million off the asking price or haggling over wages. FSG need to look at why these deals are falling through and appoint someone capable of sealing deals, I know they got they’re fingers burnt with Camolli but surely there is someone with more tact and subtlety that Ian Ayre, I have visions of him touring round Europe, riding into boardrooms on his Harley!

      Mo

      Delete
    4. It's hard to know where because it feels like clubs are beginning to use us as the stalking horse to get the bigger players into the market. How is that Southampton and Swansea can go out and buy quality, admittedly not right at the top end, but quality without any qualms, but when it comes to us it just doesn't happen. Spurs stepped all over us twice last season.

Felt uneasy when reading that we were putting plan B into operation should the deal fall through. What is the point of putting in a formal bid of £25.6 million when the club stipulated they wanted £30 million minimum. Got to get out of this 'We are Liverpool' mentality and get into the real world.

    5. Darren Lewis who is a Sports football writer and a REDS fan, reckons that the Willian Brazilian should choose White Hart Lane over Anfield cos of pententional title contenders...is that a joke?, we play as a team, they play has a one man team Bale

      Delete
    6. I can see your point Koppost and to an extent I agree but also think the point about club paying over the odds on fees and wages in past and being burnt also has some validity. We all get p*ssed off with our inability to negotiate decent fees when players leave the club so don't want to be seen as total mugs when it comes to signing players. It's all a game of brinksmanship at the end of the day and I suppose you are right that if club wanted him enough to spend such a fee they should of gone no-nonsense especially when it was highly predictable that spurs would come sniffing around!

Lets just hope he turns out to be a fancy dan, mercenary and that we've dodge a bullet like it looks like we may have done with Dempsey and Sigurdsson. Another positive to note is that we are at least targeting ambitious signings and not being efficient at wrapping up deals for average players who we have little competition for....

On your point about Barkley, I think sterling, Ibe, wisdom and suso (who from highlights looked excellent for Almeria last night) would suggest that youth development is one area where club is actually looking quite healthy at the minute (although I realise all of above were signed in their mid teens)....

      Delete
    7. Mate I hear you, but why open the club up to ridicule? If we really want the player either go for him or don't enter the ball park. We can all say prudence is the order of the day, but if we are messaging each other this time next year having come 6th or 7th in the League I don't suppose we all be to happy sitting outside Europe yet again. Like you say, hopefully we've dodged a bullet, but looks abysmal.

As regards the youngsters you mention, all good, but we spent a good deal of money on three out of the four and until I see them doing the business week in week out I wont be counting any chickens particularly as Suso is now out on loan. We tend not to count up the money we've spent on many of those youngsters when we are piecing together are seasonal outlay.

      Delete
    8. Its all good and well going on about our youth players but we now need our established players to come good or we really will not get back to the top of the game.

We are drifting further and further behind the rest every year we do not have Champions League football.

We can not entice the better quality players without top level football anymore - it’s a price we have to pay for the failure to maintain our Champions League status and I quite clearly remember Koppost stating the ominous warning signs 4 years ago - gutted that he has turned out to be right on this one.

I feel we could make the spine of our team so much stronger if we picked up PSG's Mamadou Sakho for our central defence - excellent French international defender and I am baffled why we didn't go for central defensive midfielder Mohammed Diame at the same time that we were negotiating for Downing to be sold to West Ham.

    23. When your in Liverpool’s position, you need to be absolutely switched on every window. We are never going to outspend City, Chelsea or United but you need to bring in at least 2 players per window that will improve your quality and hopefully bridge the gap on the pitch, we did that at Christmas with Coutinho and Sturridge, so far this window we haven’t. 10 days left, fingers crossed we can still do some decent business.

      Delete
    24. In reality if we haven't got in the quality by now - its not going to happen - we are just going to have to hope that Aspas, Alberto are the two shining gems which can elevate us up a couple of levels.

Now that is being very optimistic.

      Mo, Massive difference.

The Utd youngsters were just a group of guys which came around just before the football industry blew up in this country.

    25. Steady now guys. I know it is painful to be beaten by Spurs consistently on potential signings. I believe what will be will. We got 4 players or 5 with the loan deal yet to be tried and tested. Do not write them off just yet. At least one of them who started his debut like jelly made a name for himself to give us straight 3 points in the opening game in 5 seasons. We have cause to be optimistic. If we beat Aston Villa on Saturday evening I am sure, we will be playing a different note!! We know that our owners do not have deep pocket like the Chelsea, the Man City and Manchester United of this world. Keep faith people and it will be well come May 2014.

That type of financial mismanagement takes years to put right, so to offer £30M for player just so we can boast we’ve made a marquee signing seems a bit of a backward step and a huge financial risk.

We need a strong squad of quality players of the like of Sturridge and Coutinho who provide value for money.

    2. Its bringing our club into disrepute. I understand the Analyser’s concerns, however, we have to ensure that we can compete, and to do so we’re going to have pay over the odds for top quality. Hopefully, we won’t make the same mistakes we’ve made with Carroll, Downing, Allen (average British players).

    3. I do agree with the Analyser. Siggusen or what so ever is his name is not all singing dancing for them. Noticeable the seater he missed at Anfield last season. Let they have the guy and good luck to them. We jumped out 2.5 years back and splash out £55m, what did we get in return, next to nothing in terms of value. We then recycled all them to the thrash "bin" West Ham.

    12. Apparently we’re going to spend £10 mil on Will Hughes from Derby and lend him back to them for the season, can we really afford to do this sort of thing? Surely we need to spend on players that can make an impact this season. Also, according to the Mirror (get a pinch of salt ready) we’ve turned down a £10 million bid from Napoli for Skrtl which is also mental if true.

      Delete
    13. That is absolutely mental if true about the bid for Skrtel, cant believe it is though. If we could get ten mill for him and use it and a bit more to bring in Papadopulous of Sakho are defence should be significantly strengthened on last year....

On Hughes - its a tricky one. Clearly not a priority but perhaps it's a case of moving now and will look like a master-stroke in a couple of years. He looks like an exceptional talent. Despite the attempted moves for myhkitaryan and co it looks like we trying to follow dortmund approach of signing players before they're fully established stars....and in long run it might be a more realistic approach than going all out on a couple of established stars in one window.

Just to make things more interesting some reports saying that arsenal are moving for benzema and that real will try to use any money for suarez. If that was the case surely we'd have to try and get a couple of players off them....Can't wait for this bloody window to shut!

      Delete
    14. If Real come in and we block a move Suarez will absolutely blow his stack, expect a transfer request, court of arbitration etc etc. I hope that we are putting in place some pretty robust contingency plans for a final day bid from Real.

      Delete
    15. There is some sense to it I guess. They confirmed yesterday that Coates suffered a torn knee ligament and it's probably out until spring next year and it was just as they were looking to unload him. So Skrtel is now the only experienced centre barring Agger and Toure at the club.

If the transfer merry-go-round swings into gear and Real come in for Suarez he only need say verbatim what Steven Gerrard was quoted as saying on August 1st "For me, surely you want to play Champions League with Liverpool rather than anyone else. But if he was to go abroad to a Madrid or Barcelona I would totally understand it," Gerrard told The Independent.

"He’s a South American. He’s good enough to play in either of those teams. From a family point of view, it’s where they all want to be. Javier Mascherano, Xabi Alonso, some of the top players I’ve played with – their dream was to play for Real or Barcelona.

"If I was him I would wait for one of those two clubs because I think he’s good enough to play for them."

As for Hughes, he could be a prodigious talent but until he puts his signature on the forms I wouldn't count your chickens, although he fits exactly the type of player FSG and Brendan Rodgers are looking to secure. But if we are willing to spend £10 million on an 18 year is it all about sell on value later on and not the here and now when we need to strive for quality to bridge what is after a chasm in terms of the gap between us and the top three - anyway, as I write Derby are now saying there has been no bid from us....

      Delete
    16. Was reading an article today that made a good point, if you look at all FSGs signings so far the only one that we faced any kind of competition for was Coutinho (Southampton also wanted him) All the other signinigs, including Suarez, there were no other clubs in for them. When a another club is interested we consistently lose out.

    17. Our club needs players that will influence things right away - its all well and good buying players for the future but to not focus on what the real target is - getting back to the top table is a travesty !!!!

      Delete
    18. Baz, as you said previously, questions have to be asked of Iain Ayre, who just seems to be bolstering his 'Ayre miles' going after potential buys he gets no where near.

Even after Coates injury Brendan Rodgers now says it would be better if Wisdom goes out on loan, so I guess Skrtel must be either staying or a purchase is imminent...?

      Delete
    19. I question the logic of sending Wisdom out on loan. He’s decent cover for centre back and right back and with Martin Kelly still a bit shaky after his injury I can see Wisdom getting plenty of minutes at LFC especially is the cups.

      Delete
    20. WHAT!!! Rodgers didn't say that about Wisdom did he ??? HE needs to stay or that would be another stupid Rodgers decision - Skrtel wants out so can go as soon as they reach an acceptable transfer fee like £15m.

With the help of Iain Ayre - we had Wilian almost as one of our players but lost him in thin "Ayre" !!! LOL

    21. Pretty sure there was interest in Suarez but we were just first to move, and also carroll. Unfortunately, on carroll we blew everyone out of the water and look where that got us.

I think in some cases it is clear club are dithering/being tight and it is costing us but in other think they are perhaps being prudent. Last summer for example spurs got sigurdsson cause they offered him 70k a week. People were up in arms about it but if we had signed him and he'd had the season he's had for spurs he would be deemed a catastrophe, so in that case I think club were right to stand firm. The other example of dempseyis for me at the other end of the scale in that it was ridiculous and bloody minded and left us horrendously short for sake of a couple of million....even if he did turn out to be a poor signing for them

If we don't add another established attacker before the willian debacle we will probably be more akin to the dempsey situation but if we do then it could turn out to of been prudent. So many different stories doing the round but if stuff about us agreeing fee close to 30 mill and then being told we had to cough up an extra five mill then it may have be right to walk away...provide we manage to strengthen....

Good article on legend that is John Barnes - http://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2013/aug/22/on-second-thoughts-john-barnes

    22. Real Madrid will definitely come in for Suarez with their three or four stages of payment as they are broke - I keep telling everyone this but no one is listening - they are using loan payments to fund their transfer business and still haven't paid much money to Spurs for Modric !!!

Just don’t understand how Spurs have agreed to the £93m sale of Bale when they haven't been paid in full for Modric !!! Crazy !!!

    23. David, seems you might get your wish as reports floating around the Sakho has told PSG he wants to come to Liverpool. Big statement as he wanted by AC Milan

    24. that would be a nice tonic if somebody wanted to come to us instead of a prestigious CL team! jeez, already bracing myself for days of twitter rumours before someone else snaps him up!

  11. You look at Spurs team even without Bale,

    LLoris

    Walker Dawson Vertongen Rose

    Dembele Capoue Paulinio

    Lennon Soldado Willian

Subs from: Friedel, Kaboul, Naughton, BAE, Holtby, Sandro, Townsend, Chadli, Thom Carroll, Sigurdson, Adebayor, Defoe

It’s not beyond belief that they could be aiming higher for forth this year, and apparently they are also currently tying up a deal for Eric Lamella from Roma! Gareth who?

    1. Baz, as you are alluding too below, they now have quality in depth. When Stoke started looking dangerous in the last 20 minutes I couldn't have been alone in thinking there must be someone else to sure up the dam in midfield rather than Sterling. Talent that he undoubtedly is, we needed an experience soldier coming on.

With two weeks left in the transfer market I just hope he has some irons left in the fire.

    2. I agree with this Koppost. Think we could really do with an additional body in midfield, someone who could of come on against stoke when team was tiring/getting pushed back and helped to shore things up and as much as I think allen can prove people wrong this season he was clearly not the man (or boy) for that particular assignment!

Whilst I'm disappointed to have missed out on willian I think £30 million seems like an awful lot and there was a bit risk that spending such an amount on one player could hurt our ability to strengthen other areas further down the line. I just hope we can get a couple of extra bodies in before the window and then hopefully have a bit of cash to strengthen in jan as well.

I think we are definitely still light but are in an infinitely better position than we were this time last year. Our form from January (albeit with little pressure) must of been pretty close to champs league form and I think we are a bit stronger for our summer dealings (despite currently being 5mill in the black!)

On Cissohko, I wasn't particularly fussed about his signing given he apparently had an average season for Valencia last year, and has always looked a bit headless chicken like to me when I've seen him play in past, but read an article earlier pointing out that his defensive stats are excellent, including having great stats for winning aerial battles so he could prove to be not just good competition but also a good option for games where we may have to spend a bit more time under the cosh.

  12. See below from Jamie C online lastnight:

James Carragher writes: 'Afternoon David, So just as I was starting to get excited for my beloved Liverpool after Saturday's performance, BANG....The FSG 'Jenga-set' comes crashing down again! I really thought that a player like Willian could provide the missing piece to the Anfield puzzle and the solution to our (long overdue) return to Champions League football. Suarez, Sturridge, Willian, with (the brilliant) Countinho sitting in the hole. Can you imagine that...every Premiership defender would be in a cold sweat at the thought of stopping them?? There will be a lot of disgruntled LFC fans out there if this 'marquee signing' isn't delivered this time around. Memories of the Dempsey saga all over again? Have we matched his price-tag?? is Willian even going to listen to our pitch, or do we have to accept that we are just not the 'big-name' draw that we used to be? The latter doesn't even bear thinking about...'

Just read in the Guardian that LFC is expecting a bid for LS from RealMadrid.

    3. The potential scenario is not looking good. Was listening to Graham Hunter yesterday saying Benzema was booed off over the weekend and they want to use his transfer money to get Suarez.  Never thought as a Liverpool supporter I'd have to sit there wondering not who were going to get at the end of the transfer window, but who we'd retain!

    4. I would say that it's absolutely nailed on that Real will bid for Suarez and they will get him. Despite our protestations to the contrary if Suarez wants to go to Real (which he really, really does) then he will force the move.Interesting quotes from Rogers press conference about the Willian deal, the manager cut an unusually despondent figure and bemoaned the lack of big signings brought in this Summer. He basically said that the owners wouldn't match the Spurs bid for Willian because they didn't perceive value. I would really like to know how the Americans judge value in a market that they know next to nothing about? I mean Willian ostensibly fits the FSG profile, he's young, has a good record and reputation so what put them off? I reckon they are being advised by an unknown party or parties on transfer matters in much the same way that Hicks and Gillett had the ear of Klinsman for a time. Rodgers clearly thought the player was worth the money, so they weren't listening to him.

    5. My joy will know no bounds if Chelsea beat Spurs to the signing of the guy.

Let's hope we can 3 points on Saturday. I think that Av woild be a good test to where we are before the Utd game.

    8. Aston Villa will be a very tough test.  Chelsea were lucky to bag the entire 3 points at Stamford Bridge.  Benteke and Agbonahor are the two players calling the shot for them.  The took 4 points of us last season with the shock defeat at Anfield.

    9. Where was LS then?

      Delete
    10. Exactly the point.  He did play both games.  As much as we want him to stay, statistic in term of winning % does not speak well of LS playing; because we win more games when he is not in the team than when he is.

    11. I thought that much. The only downside is that he had a good link immediately with DS which is an asset and the team is now building up on this whilst he is not in the team.

    1. Dear All,

Edet, I understand your frustration but this beg the question, whatwould temp a player to move away from spurs and go to Chelsea andespecially after having a medical at Spuds. Is it MONEY, chances to wina medal(s), playing in the CL. Where is the PRIDE/LOYALTY?

    2. Mo, I know it is begging the question, but Spurs is certainly unnecessary distraction in our effort to enter into that exclusive club we have been absent from for a while -CL.

I do apologise, but how did we win our last CL Cup with I believe mostlyaverage players except JC and SG both younger then.

    6. I agree Mo - Willian doesn't come out of this whole sage looking good. No surprises that his agent is that joker Kia Joorabachian. definitely much better for us that he's gone to Chelsea. Whilst he would of been an exciting signing I don't think his track record (about one goal in eight I think) is stellar enough to warrant such a huge fee and massive wages. Would of been such a gamble. I think Rodgers comments are probably just a little tactic to try and ensure board back him in last few weeks and also just to make sure everyone is aware of the parameters he is working in - classic managerial tactic (favoured by redknapp and hodgson) of trying to manage expectations

    1. All,

I just thought of something, if all the decent players now are so richwhen they retire that they won't need to work except being a footballpresenter then who will becomes managers. Will there be a lack ofdecent/good managers in the future?

3 points for LFC this weekend will do a great deal moral wise for theteam and I am hopping to watch the game live. Have a nice long weekend all.Mo

    2. Not necessarily Mo, because, Rafa, Mourinho, Moyes, Martinez and Wenger, Brendan and even Fergie either never played or didn't play top class or weren't high class players.

As I said previously, it's already a pivotal match. We win and the momentum going into the Man United game especially as we'll be playing at home, good set us up for a decent season. We need to be on the front foot by the time Suarez is available (should he still be here), which will give Brendan the option of blooding him back gently as he obviously regains match fitness and as I've said previously Coutinho and Sturridge are vital. Coutinho for his obviously, creativity and already becoming one of the teams leaders given the time he spends on the ball and Sturridge, pure and simple because of his finishing and hoping that he develops into that top class striker we all know he is capable of being.

Not having European football is especially tough this season, but that's got to the minimum at the end of the season and for that we need consistency and I agree that the Villa game will provide a measuring stick to where we are given their strong start. Obviously, Benteke is the danger, alongside the speed of Agbonlahor, but I tend to think this game will be won, if it is to be won, in midfield where Fabian Delph has had a storming start, following on from an outstanding 2012-13 season.
