Scintillating Suarez wins shootout with Bale - Liverpool 3 Tottenham 2

Report by dedlfc (David Douglas)

The big two talking points pre-kick off were

  • Firstly for regular home supporters to Anfield was the price hike of nearly 10% to season ticket prices for next season 2013-2014.

There are both winners and losers under the plans unveiled by our club to divide Anfield into half a dozen differently priced sections from August based on a seat's location and view.

The most expensive areas are the central sections of the Centenary Stand, Main Stand and Paddock.
A Main Stand adult season ticket holder currently paying £780 will be asked to shell out £850 for the same seat next season.
However, season ticket holders in the corner sections of the Kop will see the cost of their seat drop by £15 to £710, while for those in the central sections of the Kop there is a price freeze at the current level of £725.
In a bid to keep tickets for juniors affordable, we are also introducing a £5 children's ticket for selected Premier League games.
There is also a reduction of around 30% for junior season tickets with under-16s watching every league game from the Anfield Road Stand for just £200.
The price of season tickets for over-65s ranges from £637.50 to £532.50.

  • The second talking point was the massive blow before kick off that we were to play without Reina in goal had dampened many of our spirits but we had to hope that our second choice keeper Brad Jones had finally got over the FA Cup defeat performance against Oldham and was ready for a massive chance at redemption.

With the Tottenham side on a 5 game winning run and Liverpool on a two game winning run, it was a game that would show us where we were as regards our progress as a team.

The early signs were not looking good for the confidence of our reserve keeper Jones as he had to use unconvincing measures to push away a Bale free kick - which to be fair to him had a slight swerve on the ball.

Attempts on goal were being kept to a minimum until a fantastic build up gave us the lead after 20 minutes with the sily skills of Coutinho combining well done the left with Enrique freed up Suarez who toe-poked the ball home for his 22nd league goal of the season - 29th goal overall.

Our captain Stevie Gerrard was cautioned unfairly when he was adjudged to have fouled Bale in a full-blooded aerial challenge, Bale seemingly looking groggy and having to leave the field, he then proceeded to have the last laugh on the stroke of half-time.

The following free kick resulted in a prolonged spell of Spurs possession, and the in-form forward Bale curled in a delightful cross from the right wing that Vertonghen confidently glanced into the bottom right-hand corner at the back post rising above the static Johnson to do so.

From the start of the second half Tottenham seemed to take over control of midfield with particularly Dembele giving our team problems with this dribbling skills and strength on the ball.

The Belgian defender Vertonghen proved his goalscoring form again eight minutes after the restart with an impudent half-volley to give Spurs the lead. Bale once again won and delivered a free kick which Jamie Carragher failed to clear, and Vertonghen struck home instinctively from 10 yards.

The turning point of the whole game came four minutes later when the visitors should have had a third when Gareth Bale outpaced Steven Gerrard and the rest of our back line from the halfway line and found Sigurdsson unmarked at the back post, his shot was deflected off of Glen Johnson onto the woodwork and then wide.

The miss was costly as Walker inexplicably tried to play a high back pass from the right wing which curled away from his keeper Lloris who raced from his goal but coulcn't control the ball which Downing nicked and calmly placed home through the legs of Vertonghen with approximately 25 mins left.

With both sides desperately searching for the winner it was another Tottenham defensive error which was the decisive difference in this game.

Both sides searched for a winner but Spurs' tiredness told as Defoe redirected the ball into Suarez's path in the box, causing Assou-Ekotto to bundle our forward over and allow Gerrard to send Lloris the wrong way for all three points.

Kop-Post man of the match - Luis Suarez - Our sorcerer played another great role in this victory with his constant movement, vital goal and discipline to play out of position on the left at times just to assist the team.

Positives
We have finally beaten a top side of note this season, it has been one of our achilles heels for this season and also recorded three successive league victories for the first time since May 2011.

We have also displayed the required character and mental strength to come back from going behind which will be needed to get up to the very top level.

The potential of our front three Suarez, Coutinho and Sturridge may not have been totally at its best in this game but even in glimpses you can see how they can influence games going forward.

The excellent substitution choice by Rodgers of bringing on Joe Allen in the second half worked as we were no longer totally over-run in midfield when he came on.

Negatives
Throughout the majority of the game Tottenham had more midfield control and possession and looked like the better side overall which again shows there is a lot of further work to be done on improving the depth of the squad to improve on our side.

The other major problem is that no long-term improvement will be possible as long as we are undermined by atrocious defending. It was the 15th time this season we had conceded two or more goals in the league, we have now conceded two or more goals in half of our games. A dominant central defender is now a must in the summer as Skrtel has been ignored for good it seems.

Comments from Brendan Rodgers:-

"It was very important win for us," said the Northern Irishman. "We are on a great run at the moment and we knew this was going to be a severe test of our qualities and character against a team in great form. For us to get three points and show the character was fantastic and I am delighted for the players because they worked ever so hard.
"You can see the mentality in the group. I thought we had to show different characteristics than what we have had to do in recent weeks. We've been comfortable in a lot of the games and been able to control them but against a top side we came through. I had to make some changes to get the control back and when we did that I thought we were good value for the win."

  1. Fantastic win, poor performance but we got the job done through determination and being mentally tough - this will come in very useful in years to come if we are to eventually get back to the top.

We desperately need a dominant centre back and an enforcer who can drive the team on alongside Lucas. West Ham's Mohamed Diame now needs to be targetted big time this summer and we can then push on for top 4 next season.

    1. fantastic result, determination and belief, allot of people did not suspect this result, but proved people wrong. We all spoke about our younger's getting battered and bullied around. but hopefully they will all start to come good. 4th place is possible.

    3. Agree. If Spurs' full backs hadn't lost the plot we'd have lost this one.

BR needs to put Phillipe in the gym quick. He was really good but it was embarrassing to see him being bullied by Walker.

Dembele and Walker were also proper idiots for trying to wind up Saurez.

  2. Resilience. Watching the match it felt like we were bring outclassed in periods, but we hung on in there even though we were the width of a post in going 3-1 down. The attacking line-up meant a lack of bodies in the middle. Thought he could've made the change at half time to try to regain possession.

It felt like they (Spurs) were running on fumes towards the end and we were stronger in the final quarter.

Like the link up play down the left and Coutinho displays some serious vision. Happy for Downing, just wish his delivery would come on as much, whether he has a future....

We've played better in many a game this season and lost so we should take it as a positive aspect going forward, especially as we took advantage of their mistakes.

Another centre-half, midfielder and a striker are a must! Oh, and a goalkeeper...

    2. I'd like one who offers something a little different like a physical presence and some power running. Too many times this season we've seen the midfield unable to combat the rough and tumble in certain games. And Gerrard is still the only Liverpool centre-midfielder capable of dictating a game. The holding midfield role is back in Lucas hands, so I'd be surprised if all of Henderson, Allen and Shelvey are all still at the club at the start of next season.

    3. I think Shelvey will be the only one of that group to leave as despite a good start to the season – he has gone off the boil as of late and the boss no longer seems to trust his game – very similar to his stance with a certain Mr Skrtel !!!

    4. Shelvey would get my vote every time above Jo Allen. He is technically skilful, has a physical presence and energy. He's just unlucky - he had a couple of poor performances but umlike Jo he now seems to be the forgotten man!

  3. Disappointing about the ticket prices - what a scank! I guess they'll also put the ticket prices for match days and increase the booking fee too add £70 for the train ticket and it all adds up!

But back to the match - big credit to the lads for passing the test by coming from behind and beating a top class side. The Suarez goal was just amazing - reminded me of Ian Rush!

    1. If we are not gonna try and get Diame in the summer we should seriously look at bringing Alex Song back to England because he is wasting his career at Barcelona and has the advantage of being able to play dual positions Defensive Midfield and Central Defender! What do u think?

      Delete
    2. Diame is a very good player and I remember mentioning him to you after the game at Upton Park as he tore through our midfield and the game only changed in our favour after his injury. But while I wouldn't mind him in at Anfield, what I want to see is a top class midfield player at Anfield to help take us to the next level. There is the potential of Allen, Henderson and Shelvey, but right now to compete consistently we need a top class footballer. Rodgers obviously sees Gerrard and Lucas as his nail on certs at the moment and unless there is an injury to either that will probably be the same next season. So a top class inclusion in the third position would give us that additional dimension and give Gerarrd that help in the creative department as well as helping to drive the Liverpool midfield and as said it may well be that we sacrifice one or two of those to bring in someone else and knowing that we have Suso et al coming up in the wings.

    3. Song to leave Barcelona (the best team in the world) to come to Liverpool...yeah, I can definitely see that one happening - but in a parallel universe!

Lets see if the predictable Barcelona are so great tonight as when you stop Messi you stop Barcelona.

So as a footballer you want to say you are at a squad like Barcelona but not playing rather than you are playing for a side like Liverpool on a regular basis week in week out. That smacks of laziness and a lack of ambition

    6. Can't see Alonso or Song coming to us and whilst I haven't watched a lot of West Ham (luckily! ) don't think Diame has shown enough. impressive in flashes but careless also.

I think there is a good chance that either Joe Allen or Hendo will come good for that central mid position. Jonjo needs to wise up as he has the talent but is a bit too rash in his decision making. Not sure if you can teach that re: Pennant but I hope he blossoms. More Fat Frank than Stevie tho.

Shame for Skrtel, been a colossus for 3 seasons and a scapegoat now. None of our defenders have covered themselves in glory really. except Glen but obviously only going forward (that Victor is the only acceptable use of the 2 words! ).

We need experience ultimately. Oh quality result, maybe a tad fortunate but v well earned on the whole.

Barca predictable? Eh when? and what will be the score and scorers?

    7. Strongly agree with that Iain, easy to be impressed with Diame from highlights and from games against the bigs sides but I have heard his form has been pretty patchy and fact he looked good in patches but had spells out of the side at wigan suggest he isn't going to be answer to our midfield problems. Having said that if he still has the rumoured £3.5 mill release he might still be a decent addition to squad...

On other midfield issues, totally agree on allen. Think it is ridiculous to write him off this early, in light of his early season form and the examples of lucas and to a lessor extent hendo. I also thought he had a decent game at wigan, against zenit at anfield and did well when he came on on sunday. On shelvey, I think he could benefit from another spell on loan to a prem team...he seems to be doing well having dropped back down to reserves. Def think there is potentially a fat frank types player in there somewhere but don't think he is currently at level to be a consistent first teamer for us...

On alonso - I was pretty excited reading the rumours over the weekend but I not sure he could really be accomodated given gerrards current role in the team. Both of them in the same midfield would for me increase problems of lack of legs....

Tony barrett says we've a genuine interest in Eriksen at ajax and think he could be a realistic signing and would add to midfield surplus without addressing lack of phyiscality/defensive quality in midfield. Think suso should also be in managers consideration as he has regained his form in the reserves and looked unplayable in two goal performance against west hame yesterday...

On srktel, strange situation and there is obviously more going on than meets the eye and it's starting to look personal now

    1. Not going to happen as him coming back will mean that Rodgers will have to face the fact that his Joe Allen experiment failed and he will not admit that one !!! LOL

    3. 'Lets see if the predictable Barcelona are so great tonight as when you stop Messi you stop Barcelona.' - stop throwing stones mate. who has scored the bulk of Liverpool's goals this season??

Plus it's just not in the zone of reality to imagine that Alex Song would swap the bench of Barcelona to come to play for Liverpool. It's more likely that he'd look to go to another top side in Germany or Italy.
