In what was always going to be a difficult game away to Swansea , Brendan Rodgers returning home with his charges, came into the match unbeaten in 7 Premiership games looking to put themselves into a position to compete for a European place. Jordan Henderson came in for a midfield berth after impressing recently and Downing re-entered the fray for the injured Wisdom.
On another day Jose Enrique’s disallowed goal to which he ghosted in on the end of a delightful Suarez chipped cross could have been given with the advantage normally going to the attacker. The decision, albeit the correct one, was marginal in the extreme. Routledge kept Pepe Reina on his mettle with a sharp shot which he turned away at the near post which was Swansea ’s only meaningful effort of the half.
If the first-half was open at full of vitality and vigour without any real cutting edge on both sides of the fence, the second was a more sedate affair with both sides seemingly aware that losing was not an option. Williams connected well with a header from De Guzman’s corner which Allen cleared off the line defending the far post. Although Hernandez stinging free-kick from outside the area saw Reina save well after Joe Allen’s mistimed tackle, it was the away team that found the impetus to raise ahead of steam in the last quarter of the match.
Jonjo Shelvey, coming on to replace Henderson late on, unleashed a tremendous angled drive which Tremmel diving to his right palmed away. It was the last meaningful action of a match where possession was divided evenly.
Kop-Post Man of the Match: Raheem Sterling – The England winger was unlucky not to score with a powerful which struck the upright. But, the most impressive part of his play was his tracking back. Time and time again, he went back to support Glen Johnson making tackles and interceptions, picking the ball up on occasions running the ball out or passing to colleagues to set up attacks. He is showing maturity beyond his years and augurs well in his progression to the upper echelons of the game if he keeps this level of demeanour.
Team: 25 Reina, 2 Johnson, 3 Enrique, 5 Agger, 37 Skrtel, 8 Gerrard, 14 Henderson (Shelvey – 77’), 19 Henderson (Cole -77’), 19 Downing (Cole – 77’), 24 Allen, 31 Sterling , 7 Suarez
Subs: 1 Jones, 16 Coates, 23 Carragher, 4 Sahin, 10 Cole, 33 Shelvey, 30 Suso
I really don't understand why BR keep using Allen as 80% of his pass is either back or square and he nearly cost us the game with fouls just outside our box.
ReplyDeleteAs you stated, RS was back defending but with need to make our possession count with goals.
Looking forward to the game on Wednesday against Spuds.

Fair play. Didn't think Allen on his return was overly impressive and he has struggled recently - although he does possess ability as I've said recently, but needs a more attacking mindset an you intimate above. Some of Johnson's forays upfront was on occasions difficult to defend against and he should of scored with the one on one. Comes to something when Downing is now just a squad player filling in for one of the youngsters!
DeleteYeah, Allen had a poor game, continuously caught in possession, gave away free kicks in dangerous areas and I know his job is to recycle the ball but a few passes forwards wouldn’t go amiss.
DeleteTotally agree that Raheem Sterling again impressed with his maturity in having the awareness to provide very good defensive back up to Glen Johnson at right back when needed.
ReplyDeleteI felt this was an opportunity lost to get a significant win before the tough away game at Spurs on Weds.
Yet again Downing disappointed in the rare chance he had to start a league game and I am also beginning to feel the frustration of LFC fans with Joe Allen keeping things too simple by going for the side way pass instead of taking a chance with a progressive forward pass.
Now 8 games without a loss but my concern is not enough wins and too many draws.
I would to have seen Shelvey start in place of either Allen or Henderson. Although I thought the latter did ok coming in for his first premiership start. Sterling has really got footballing intelligence in both directions.
DeleteGlen has being playing really well - long may it continue.

ReplyDeleteWhat are people's thought on team selection....I'm not feeling too confident to be honest so I think I'd go quite defensive and try to rely on moment of suarez genius to nick something!
ReplyDeletewith that in mind think i'd go with the below with Gerrard on the right to try and help combat bale. Id even be tempted to rest sterling and start with enrique and then have option of bringing suso, sterling and/or shelvey off bench to try and win game late on....
Pepe
Wisdom Srktel Agger Johnson
Allen Sahin
Gerrard Henderson Sterling
Suarez
Luke B
I'm with you on Sahin, can't sit back and invite them on in this and think we'll have to play with a lot of intensity to get a result there. Raheem would be electric coming on against tired legs also and yes, he's played a lot of games for a young 'un. Our passing has been very good of late and we're begining to create lots of chances again, just hope we 1. take them and 2. don't give it away cheaply. I'd go:
ReplyDeletePepe
Wisdom Skrtel Agger Enrique
Johnson Allen Stevie Jonjo
Suso Suarez
But Brendan isn't likely to play a 4-4-2 is he! Maybe Jonjo behind the front 2 and Stevie on the left.
I would like to see Joe Cole come on and cause problems though, if we can get him fit it would give us a player who in theory fits in well with Brendan's passing approach. You can dream can't you?!
cheers,
Iain
I know what you mean about not sitting back but I just worry that spurs have the sort of side that are best equipped to expose our current weaknesses if we try to push high up the field. hadn't thought of pushing johsnon further forward but could be an option to nullify Bale....
DeleteLuke
Not sure if Jonjo’s game will be of benefit to us from the left.
ReplyDeleteI reckon tonight we’ll see the return of the 3-5-1
DeleteSomething like this –
Pepe
Skrtl Coates Agger
Johnson Gerrard Allen Hendo Enrique
Suarez
Barry
Barry and one other... Sterling? As I'm sure you don't want us to out there one man down... ;-)
DeleteIain, also worried about Sterling playing too many games. Always thinking a snapped hamstring and Michael Owen...
Any thoughts on links to Daren Bent, Daniel Sturridge etc...
Jeez my maths are rubbish – Yeah an 11th player would help wouldn’t it!
DeleteRe my previous mail, lets stick Sterling up front with Suarez so that we have 11 players on the pitch (Doh!)
Pepe
Skrtl Coates Agger
Johnson Gerrard Allen Hendo Enrique
Sterling Suarez
In fairness I was going to commend you on your team's nice balance!
DeleteLuke
Bale is on fire at the moment and seems to be playing in a free role – he is probably more likely to come up against Joe Allen than Glen Johnson. For me, Shelvey must play in all our games. He is good going forward and defensively and seems to work alternate well with Gerrard going forward.
ReplyDeleteI second that idea on Shelvey, he is potentially our most attacking midfielder to drive the team forward as Gerrard seems to have lost that driving edge this season.
DeleteAt the moment I would prefer anyone to Allen - Shelley would be better and he needs to be firm and hard but keep his cool.
DeleteMo
it will be a tough game, spurs will go out attack today, so we just need to be very compact and tight at the back, keep the ball short, and move for each other!
DeleteUse Johnson and Enrique down the wings and cut in.....and eye up our front man!
We have a problem with "move for each other"
DeleteMo
I agree, which might be why Allen chooses to pass the ball backwards all the time, moves into space to play the ball backwards again!
DeleteIt's good to hear Old Rafa still talking about 'high tempo' and 'ball retention'.....they're as clueless as us in front of goal and they have better players!!
ReplyDeletehe talking about winning the league LOL
