The onset of this summer's transfer window is almost certainly the most important in Liverpool’s recent history. We cannot afford to languish outside the top four for another season with the likes of Man City moving into another dimension and with both Spurs and Arsenal trying to improve this seasons positions after falling away. In addition, the fact that Manchester United were well beaten by Barcelona and the fact that Alex Ferguson having equalled and surpassed our record of title wins is now soley driven by the need to become part of the European elite alongside the multiple Champions League winners such as Barcelona, AC Milan, Real Madrid and ourselves means they will be active in the transfer market, maybe more so than they would have been had they not beaten so soundly thrashed.
The key advantage going forward into next season is we are able to concentrate on each competition because we do not have the distractions of European midweek games. The earlier King Kenny’s team hits its straps the better, as he can find a winning side and will not have to chop and change for European games. It will have it problems, as the games available to bed in youngsters and those on the periphery of the team will be negligible, but this why the culling of the squad is just as important as bringing in top talent – many of those like Insua, El Zhar and Degan will be obvious candidates to be moved on, but it is Kyrgiakos, Poulson and Ngog, now rumoured to be on the transfer list, which will offer up openings within the squad for new recruits and youngsters alike.
The Champions League is now the footballing world’s premier competition and it is for this reason that Dalglish must aim for Champions League qualification in his first full season since his return. Establish players now in their mid-twenties like Young, Downing and Adam all reputedly on our wish list, can see the end of their shelf lives as players and as such will not want wait to long for a chance to pit their talents against the best, thus the package offered by Liverpool in terms of its future prospects has to be enticing at the very least to compete with the instant gratification of Man United and Chelsea.
Liverpool are being linked to every available player and some not available – given King Kenny’s attitude at keeping club business in house most of this is either agent talk or just plain speculation. But, what every fan wants is players who want to play for the club and can take us on to the next level. The second-half of the season showed we have the foundation in place, but we need now is the building blocks to move forward. Thus the next few weeks will tell just how much belief there is in the footballing world about project Liverpool.By Kop Talk

ReplyDeleteVery good points, as a manager KD now needs to lead us to a successful direction.
ReplyDeleteI believe he has done that so for, but it is our player’s commitment for also being in a winning spirit.
Not going into names but its likes of some players just do not fit in our future success, and need to go now…With no set backs of Champions league, full concentration for going for home silverware and aiming in the first season to get back in the Champions league.
It can be done and we have the foundation, just need to work around it, get rid of the dirt, and until we do not get each of the players to buy into the game plan, we will not move ahead in the right direction.
I think Dalglish has put in the right strategy, going back to basics, pass and move, players do become come closer together on the pitch, know each other movements, build closer play, hold possession more, and trust each other.
Theirs no doubt we can beat big name teams, its just a matter of each player in the team is developed through practice and hard work, and then the inner workings of a successful team are in place for consistency.
I can only see teams strengthen, and most teams seem to pick/attract the right players…. we need to be upbeat for this too, and bring in quality rather then quantity…
Adams, Young, Downing would be just amazing....
In KD we TRUST!

As I said in the blog, with our new found method of using the old skool methods of keeping Liverpool business in house, a lot of these reports are being ramped up by agents trying to get their players moves or vastly improved contracts. Where we are concerned it's better just to wait and see rather than to get involved with the hyperbole.
ReplyDeleteIn addition, we all know that Joe Cole is on £100,000 a week, thus if he is not part of Kenny's plans it cuts down on the teams who will take him. And when you see that Jovanovich is on an astonishing £120,000 a week, including his signing on fee, according to the Guardian, you reaslise how difficult it will be to shift players off the wage bill. We still have Konchesky and Jones as well as those mentioned above to get rid off. Over to you Mr Camolli...
ReplyDeleteWe have interestingly now again been strongly linked to Connor Wickham with us supposedly making a bid of £8m - for me that would be a very good piece of business especially with the fact that Andy Carroll is not that reliable as regards avoiding injuries in a 38 game season.
ReplyDeleteWe have also supposedly turned the head of Jordan Henderson by showing firm interest in making a bid so we seem to be following the plan of FSG and trying to purchase young players with excellent marketability and sell-on value.
Alongside these type of players I would like to think that we could add a couple of flair wingers such as Charles Ngzobia and Juan Mata - Ngzobia providing the added element of having the PL experience.
I totally believe that adding Mata to our squad will give us further attacking options as he can prove like David Silva that he can adapt to the PL because of his experience and talent.
I would also like us to follow up on trying to sign Phil Jones because at 19 he has the advantage of playing regular PL football and has the added option of being able to bring the ball out of defence like Agger and would be a very astute signing for King Kenny.

ReplyDeleteYoung seems to be heading to the Champions, so I don think he be coming to us, his talented will be wasted if he goes to them.
ReplyDeleteTimes up for Both Joe Cole and Christian Poulsen even though it has thought both want to stay. Neither of them seemed to work out for us.
Dalglish is looking for some quality attacking midfielder likes of Ryad Boudebouz age 21 it has emerged on our buying list. possibly for a way to get the best out of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll.
The Algeria midfielder currently plays for French club Sochaux and has been linked with a summer move to Lyon, Marseille or Liverpool.
Scouts from Liverpool are watching him in recent weeks.
It also looks like Liverpool has upbeat payments to bring in Jordan Henderson from £13M and now looks final at astonishing £18.5m, could be our first signing.
Any player who we buy will hopefully not be of the one dimensional variety, thus fitting into the dynamics of different formations. The team needs pace, creativity and a strengthening of its spine, as such any buys need to have those positive aspects in mind and the player himself needs to have the right mentally to fit in to the clubs values and wanting top actually come as by all accounts Henderson wants too.
ReplyDeleteI see we've made an £18.5m offer for Sunderland’s Jordan Henderson.
ReplyDeleteRedAlert
If this goes through it means that we have spent a combined 53.5 mil on Carroll and Henderson. That’s a lot of money.
ReplyDeleteBaz
Errrm sorry but was there a mistake with the digit '8' ???
ReplyDeleteWhy would we up an offer by 5 million? That’s mental, If this is true Damien Comolli is a bit of an idiot.
ReplyDeleteBaz
If this goes through it means that we have spent a combined 53.5 mil on Carroll and Henderson. That’s a lot of money.
ReplyDeleteBaz
they both better show there worth!
ReplyDeleteRedAlert
Too much money.
ReplyDeleteWay too much money for both – but that is the gamble we are taking to try and get back into the CL and it has to pay off this coming season or it will just be seen as an expensive failed gamble.
ReplyDeletededlfc
I am yet to over come the splashing out of £35m on Andy Carroll and now this. Acquillani is going to auction, how many of this under graded players are we going to be paying over the odd for?
ReplyDeleteEdet
Jordan Henderson set to sign for Liverpool FC today!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe deal was with David Ngog, but now he will not be moving the other way as part of the deal.
Black Cats boss Steve Bruce wanted the French striker, rated by the Reds at £8m, to take the deal past his £20m valuation of the young midfielder.
But the deal will now be cash only, with Ngog staying at Anfield for the time being.
Its pretty clear KK, is buying home grown players, and I think with Super SG, this guy will learn allot..
All looking positive for now...
A great opportunity this evening to see our new £16m signing Henderson playing in a competitive under 21 tournament vs Spain. Hope he has a very good tournament and shows us glimpses of why we spent the large sum.
ReplyDeleteSpeculation on the internet now states that Ngog will eventually agree to a £5m transfer to Sunderland once back from holiday which would mean £11m will be the net figure paid to Sunderland after the Henderson and Ngog deals.
I would have thought Roy of WBA should have come knocking the door almost to breaking point for David Ngog the player who was the top scorer in his short reign at Anfield?
ReplyDeleteEdet
Media reports are abound that the Adam deal is imminent, but in the other direction there is also the rumour of Meireles leaving, which is difficult to contemplate, given some of his exceptional performances, but we will have a plethora of midfield players and no European games to stretch a large squad, thus players will have to go out on loan or be sold. In addition, if we buy two wingers, there'll be a lot more pressure for places, not just in centre-midfield, but with the likes of Maxi and Kuyt and also spending that much more says that the expectation levels for this season will be set to getting back to the Champions League as there bare minimum. Thus progress is what we must strive for.
ReplyDeleteWe can certainly cash in on Raul, but is that what we need right now? We need to have a very strong back up and bench on each game if top 4 is our proposed target come next season.
ReplyDeleteEdet
Edet, I agree that competition for places and depth of quality on the bench is what we would hope to arrive at after this transfer window closes.
ReplyDeleteI suspect next season we will play 3 in the centre of midfield - a defensive midfielder/tempo setter/attacking midfielder set-up very similar to the Mascherano/Alonso/Gerard set-up
ReplyDeleteMy prediction is for the new season is that Lucas/Adam/Gerard will start the season with Spearing/Meireles/Henderson backing up each player in that order.
Most important thing this summer is to have quality cover in all positions-so the more quality players we bring in the better!
With Adam and potentially Downing to come in by the end of this week King Kenny and Comolli are showing we want to sort out our deals as early as possible to aid preparation for the new season.
dedlfc
stronger squad on and off the bench! That way can have all positions covered so that we can win games by being consistent.
ReplyDeleteWe can get Adam and Downing, that be brilliant.

What about, a left back, orthodox winger, striker, and some PACE is desperately needed.

Article today saying the following 'baker's dozen' will sold:
ReplyDeleteMilan Jovanovic
Joe Cole
Maxi Rodriguez
Alberto Aquilani
Philipp Degen
Nabil El Zhar
Emilano Insua
Paul Konchesky
Brad Jones
Daniel Agger
Fabio Aurelio
David Ngog

Maxi one is some what acceptable, what about the Man City guy, that one is just way out of order.
ReplyDeleteEdet
Sylvain Marveaux completes medical for LFC before signing on a free.
ReplyDeletededlfc
I sincerely hope he is over his injuries, as he missed a big chunk of last season.
ReplyDeleteFollowing on from the my comment above, sadly reports emanating through the media suggests that Sylvain Marveaux has failed his medical, which the player vehemently denies. He states the problem is contractual and not medical. Let's hope it's not medical because after the Aquilani debacle, we'd rather not go through the situation of bringing in someone who cannot contribute fully to what is, afterall, one of the most important seasons in our history with out attempts to get back into the Champions League and just as important posing a legitimate threat for the Premier League.
ReplyDeleteI was listening to the Blackburn manager's quotes on the radio last Friday morning and the more I listen and read I can understand where Liverpool are going. We never stood a chance of signing Jones. Pure and simple, he wanted Champions League football and it's obviously the same with Ashley Young, which I've been saying all along, thus our buying pool is restricted without being able to entice players with Champions League football. It has its knock on effects for us, in that clubs like Sunderland, Wigan and Blackpool and overseas clubs know this and quote ridiculous prices.
ReplyDeleteAlso, it really wouldn't surprise me if Schneider does go to Man City, that Man U go for Adam - to be honest I like Adam as a player, but if we eventually have to pay £10-12 million then I would rather go for Stephen Defour who the world seems to have forgotten and is a quality footballer and a leader to boot, or Mata (and I know David would love just love it… love it!) if the 19 million for Downing which Villa are holding out for is being considered.
Mata & Nzogbia are both better options than Downing – especially if they are quoting £18 or 19m for Downing !!!!
ReplyDeleteMata will be a major statement of intent if we pick him up as he would grace the Premiership with his silky skills and would be very much like David Silva a player that no-one likes to play against !!!
Nzogbia has the ability to go past a player with pace and skill who can provide quality crosses whereas Downing is just a good crosser so it depends on what we really want !!!
They are saying that Nzogbia is our back up to Downing what an insult !!! He is a better player than Downing !!!!
If Downing eventually comes to Liverpool I will back him but he is not the better player !!!!
dedlfc
Apparently, Wigan are holding out for £15m for Nzogbia.
ReplyDeleteWatched him in France's last European qualifying match and he was the standout player - pretty dazzling in on the first goal. I was thinking at the time, that's an extra few mill on the transfer fee!
ReplyDeleteAnd whenever you add Liverpool into the mix nowadays, it’s the same “that’s an extra few mill”!
ReplyDeleteI will have faith in Camolli and Dalglish that they will bring in the best players they can but more importantly, to play in the positions where we lack quality or depth – e.g. full back, wingers with pace, etc.
Livi
I hope the most recent rumours about Wayne Bridge turnout to be nonsense or we may as well go back to Julian Dicks!!!
ReplyDeleteRumour after rumour of Raul Meireles being sold... when you think of some the mediocre players who have played for us in the last few seasons, I just hope if these rumours turn out to be true that someone world class walks through the revolving transfer doors! Meireles is just a good player, he's an intelligent one too and it would be a shame if he leaves for contractual reasons as he has a lot to offer and the Anfield fateful know a good player when they see one as they voted him their Player of the Season.
I would prefer to keep him and utilise his skills rather than sell him and it coming back to hurt us eventually !!!
ReplyDeleteIf it means not having Charlie Adam then so be it!!!
We need 2 wingers and an experienced left-back before the start of the season and that needs to be addressed more importantly than another midfielder !!!
dedlfc
We need a creative midfield player too - when we needed to unlock stubborn defences not just in the last two games, and there were many other instances during the season, we didn't possess the subtlety let alone the key to the door on the pitch or on the bench to open it up. If Suarez and Meireles couldn't do the business we were stuck in the last two games.
ReplyDeleteWe need wingers as well to get around the back of the defences if there are teams trying to defend with 10 men behind the ball!!!!
ReplyDeletededlfc
As much improved as Lucas and Spearing are we need more creativity to provide those killer through balls to our attackers.
ReplyDeleteIs it true that Raul refused to accept contract extension?
ReplyDeleteEdet
I personally think that Raul Meireles is upset that we have brought in Jordan Henderson and are looking to bring in Charlie Adam as he feels that he has more to offer than either player !!!
ReplyDeletededlfc
His contract states that he has the right to re-negotiate after the first year and I think the new boys do not want to pay him more than he currently gets.
ReplyDeleteSo what is the wisdom in bringing in players that may end up flop in comparison to the one tested and find to be worthy of putting on No 4 read shirt? Is this not the same thing we did with Xabi Alonso, Rafa needed Barry so badly and had to sacrifice Alonso and ended with no Barry. We might have unstable Raul from the look of things.
ReplyDeleteEdet
Exactly the same thing!!!!
ReplyDeleteDon’t know how King Kenny can appease him after all this!!!!
dedlfc
I think comparions to alonso are a bit over the top....
ReplyDeleteThink meireles is a decent player who had a decent first season but dont think he'd make my starting 11 when everyone is fit and dont think he's justified a pay rise after one season so i dont think his loss would have an impact on the team in the way Alosno's did!
I would obviously be happier to get rid of the likes of Cole, Aurelio (even though i think he's class when fit), Poulsen, aquilani, insua etc but I think comolli has a job on his hand there....
Luke
Just got back from my hols...
ReplyDeleteI watched Henderson during the euro's and thought what an average looking player he was....am I missing something with him? As for the money paid, I nearly choked on by bacon sandwich!!
In resonse to Luke's last comment Meireles and Suarez were the primary reasons why we ended up sixth, so less not underplay Meireles role in the team, especially in the second half of his first full term in the EPL. You also have to remember that was a team with Gerrard, Torres and Alonso in full flight and it had depth to it.
ReplyDeleteAgreed about the make-weights in the side, it's going to be difficult to get rid of them, especially when you have players like El Zhaar on 30 grand a week.
Aquilani has had a lot to say in recent days. Don’t mind getting him back, hopefully Kenny and Steve can get him pulling up trees.
ReplyDeleteBaz
Agree totally with Baz – on this one – he didn’t want to stay but has been forced to due to a lack of the Italian clubs taking the gamble on him.
ReplyDeletededlfc
I’d rather he stayed than for us to let him go for a few million. At the end of the day, we keep saying how we lack creativity in the squad, technically as Stevie G says, he is very talented.
ReplyDeleteOnce again no one wants our dead wood. It should be said, he did not have much chance to prove himself in Liverpool first time out though. The playing style under KD may very much suit his game I hope.
ReplyDeleteEdet
Wes Brown has been at Man U since birth happily picking up his wages and 8 games a season. If we play a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1, then I think Aquilani comes into play, especially given the 9 mile shift that Henderson is likely to put in. Perhaps its Joe Cole and Milanowhathisface, who should be moving off our wage bill – I know its difficult.
ReplyDeleteOn Charlie, Blackpool needs entire Liverpool squads on loan before Chief Ian Holloway can let him go.
ReplyDeleteEdet
I would also pay £20m for Nasri any day compare to paying £20m for Jordan and that from Sunderland!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteEdet
Ian Holloway is an idiot, for crying out loud let him go....
ReplyDeleteRedAlert
Kenny should get a minibus and drop off a new team a Bloomfield Road
ReplyDeleteBrad Jones
Degen Kyriakos Koncheski Insua
Jovanovic Poulsen Cole El Zhar
Ngog Pachecho
That’s bound to get you at least half of Charlie Adams or his left peg or something. Everyone’s a winner!
Baz
Well spoted Barry, that may get them back to Premier League in the first time of asking!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteEdet
I totally agree on the £20m for Nasri instead of the £20m on Henderson !!!! But we have no European footie to lure these top quality players this summer.
ReplyDeletededlfc
